On the Week 7 edition of the Subway Friday Fresh Take, we’ll recap some of the state’s top games featuring ranked opponents and highlight a few other notes from Friday’s action.

No. 3 Topeka Hayden dominates up front, beats No. 4 Andover Central
Topeka Hayden went on the road and picked up a key 38-29 district victory over Andover Central.
The Wildcats rushed for 419 yards in the game and converted a pair of Andover Central fumbles into touchdowns to pull away.
Hayden led 20-7 at halftime and began the third quarter with a long drive resulting in a Daniel Gaito touchdown run for a 26-7 lead.
The Jaguars fumbled on their next possession, and Hayden turned it into points on a Connor Schumacher touchdown run to lead 32-7.
Central responded with a touchdown pass from Peyton Huslig to running back Jordan Birch to pull within 32-14, but Schumacher would add another score for a 38-14 Wildcat lead.
Schumacher led the Wildcats with 170 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while Gaito added 111 yards and three more scores.
Connor Hobert also topped the 100-yard mark for Hayden.
Huslig passed for 211 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair of touchdown passes to Darraja Parnell in the fourth quarter after Hayden had built their 24-point lead.
Top-ranked Mill Valley uses big second half, pulls away from No. 5 St. James
Mill Valley scored in the final minute of the first half to regain the lead and then outscored St. James Academy 28-0 in the second half for a 45-14 win.
Mill Valley led 10-0 early in the second quarter before the Thunder scored a pair of touchdowns to lead 14-10.
Logan Koch scored on a short touchdown run with 30 seconds before halftime to take a 17-14 lead at the break.
Koch tossed touchdown passes to Christian Jegen and Luke Krull in the third quarter to expand their lead to 31-14.
Jegen, who moved into the backfield after an injury to Tristan Milne, added a pair of touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Koch completed 17 of 20 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 74 yards and a score.
Jegen caught eight passes for 99 yards and a score, and added 55 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Krull caught four balls for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
St. James suffered its first loss of the season, and will now have to battle the next two weeks against KC Turner and unbeaten Bonner Springs in order to qualify for the playoffs.
Garden City shuts down Hutchinson
Garden City rode its defense to a 14-2 victory over Hutchinson in the loaded 6A District 8.
The Buffaloes forced three Salthawk turnovers and stopped Hutchinson on downs twice inside the Garden City 5-yard line.
The Garden City offense produced 296 rushing yards and touchdown drives covering 95 and 76 yards.
Peyton Hill led the Buffs with 167 yards on 10 carries, while Jesse Nunez added 116 yards on 21 attempts. Hill and Nunez each scored touchdowns.
Hutch held Garden City’s Jared Koster to 15 yards on eight attempts. Koster broke the Garden City career rushing record last week.
Ruben Benitez led the Salthawks with 85 yards rushing on 13 attempts.
Wichita Northwest outscores Dodge City
Wichita Northwest tailed 21-14 at Dodge City in the second quarter when quarterback Kevin Folsom entered the game. The senior quarterback went on to pass for 267 yards and threw four touchdown passes to lead the Grizzlies to a 52-33 win.
Northwest separated from the Red Demons with a 17-3 third quarter in which Folsom hit Alex Bott on two long touchdown passes.
Jahlyl Rounds added a fourth-quarter touchdown for Northwest to seal the win. Rounds rushed for 138 yards and two scores, while Antonio Joyner added 127 rushing yards and two score.
Bott caught seven passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns.
Folsom was sidelined last Saturday for Day 2 of the Grizzlies weather-delayed win over Wichita South. He injured the knee last Friday in the first half of the win over the Titans. He didn’t start this week, but after Dodge City intercepted a Northwest screen pass and returned it 80 yards for a score, Folsom went in.
Topeka blasts Manhattan, 41-14
Topeka High dominated Manhattan 41-14 to clinch a share of the Centennial League title with Junction City.
The Trojans rushed for 370 yards in the game led by Mike McCoy’s 158 yards. McCoy scored two touchdowns and Saylor Caraway added two more scores to go with his 107 rush yards.
Quarterback Corey Thomas passed for 114 yards and a touchdown and added 101 yards rushing and another score.
Ian Trapp led Manhattan with 97 rush yards and a touchdown. He also passed for another score.
No. 5 Royal Valley tops Perry-Lecompton in 4A-II
Royal Valley fell behind early, but rallied with three big special teams plays to top Perry-Lecompton, 35-21
After the Kaws took a 13-0 lead on Mitchell Bond’s second touchdown run, Royal Valley’s Nick Ehrhart returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to pull the Panthers to within 13-6.
A high Perry-Lecompton punt snap resulted in a safety for Royal Valley, and later Jacob Box recovered a Kaw fumbled punt attempt in the end zone for a 16-13 lead.
The Panther offense finally got in on the scoring as quarterback Zack Lux broke a long touchdown run for a 23-16 lead. Bond added a touchdown run before half to pull the Kaws to within 23-21.
Lux scored in the third quarter for a 29-21 Royal Valley lead, and Derrick Barger added a score in the fourth quarter as the Panthers expanded their lead to 35-21.
Lux rushed for 140 yards in the game, while Barger added 125 yards.
Feature games in Class 2-1A
Meade tops Marion
Meade stepped outside of district play to make the 215-mile trip to Marion to take on the Warriors. Lawson Luetters scored two early touchdowns as Meade built a 19-0 lead and held off Marion, 33-18.
Leutters rushed for 195 yards and those two scores on the night. Kash Larrabee added a pair of touchdown runs for the Buffs, who rushed for 338 yards in the game.
Marion quarterback Jack Schneider rushed for a score and threw two touchdown passes to Mason Pederson.
Defending Champion Olpe wins fifth straight
Defending champion Olpe won its fifth straight game by beating Lyndon 28-6.
The Eagles led 7-0 at halftime and expanded that lead to 13-0 by the end of the third quarter. Lyndon pulled to within 21-6 early in the third quarter, but the Eagles tacked on another score for the 22-point win.
Dylan Redeker led Olpe with 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Ryker Schmidt rushed for a score and passed for 160 yards and a touchdown to Brady Scheidegger.
The victory propels Olpe to the top of the District 4 standings at 2-0 along with surprising Yates Center.
Washington County rallies in second half
Washington County entered district play unbeaten at 6-0, but the Tigers trailed at halftime on Friday 18-0 against Riley County.
Washington County rallied for 22 points in the second half to beat the Falcons 22-18. Kolton Penning threw a touchdown pass and returned a fumble for another score.
Axtell wins 8M-II, District 1 showdown
Axtell shut out No. 5 Pike Valley 22-0 on Friday to remain unbeaten in the District 1 standings.
The Eagles led 6-0 at halftime and added touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter. Kaleb Buessing rushed for a pair of scores for the Eagles, while Colton Buessing returned from injury and scored on a 25-yard run.
The Eagles blanked a Panther team averaging 48 points per game entering Week 7.
Ulysses rallies to win at Mulvane
Down 31-13 in the third quarter, Ulysses rallied to pick up a key district win at Mulvane, 34-31.
Ian Rudzik rushed for 278 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries to bring the Tigers back. Rudzik scored on a short run to pull the Tigers within 31-21 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Branden Scott hit Diego Maravilla on a 36-yard touchdown pass to pull Ulysses within 31-27 with 6:21 remaining.
Less than two minutes later, Mario Rodriguez scored from three yards out to give the Tigers the lead.
