Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Olathe Northwest made the long trip out west and picked up a 34-7 victory at Garden City. The Ravens were led by senior Bryce Randall who rushed 26 times for 181 yards and a touchdown. Three other Ravens added rushing touchdowns including Brody Comfort, Noah Harrell, and Daniel Skoczek.
Maize moved to 2-0 with a 27-0 win over Andover. The Eagles scored in each quarter with Brayden Myovela passing and rushing for a touchdown. Myovela passed for 135 yards and added 96 yards on the ground. Demarye Smith and Shannon Jones also rushed for touchdowns.
Two-time defending 6A champion Gardner-Edgerton rebounded from a close loss in Week 1 by beating St. Pius X (Mo.), 34-28. Syre Padilla rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries to lead the Blazers. Briggs Cunningham added 79 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Trailblazers led 34-14 entering the fourth quarter before Pius added a pair of touchdowns.
Topeka High moved to 2-0 with a 28-20 win over Wichita Heights. Senior Zane Smith passed for 93 yards and a touchdown and added 85 yards rushing. Heights was led by Zane Masterson who passed for 258 yards and three touchdowns.
Olathe West flipped the result of a 42-12 loss to Blue Valley West last season by defeating the Jaguars, 21-17, on Friday. The Owls were led by quarterback Brody Hale who passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Cabe Roberson also threw a touchdown pass. Sam Krzykowski, Weston Voight, and Luke Zimmerman each had touchdown receptions for Olathe West. Brett LaDuke passed for 374 yards and a touchdown for Blue Valley West, but was intercepted three times. Jett Nagy caught six passes for 131 yards for the Jaguars, while Lawson McGraw added 74 yards receiving and two scores.
Class 5A:
Liberal scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to overtake Wichita South, 28-21. Sophomore Tevin Cotter passed for 150 yards and threw two touchdown passes to James Fieser in the win. Fieser caught five passes for 105 yards and those two scores. Wichita South was led by Rashawn Johnson’s 149 rushing yards, while Jay’den Kirk-McGowan added 100 yards on 18 carries.
Head Coach Chris Jaax picked up his first win at his alma-mater as Bishop Carroll defeated Wichita Southeast, 33-6. The Eagles controlled the game with their defense in limiting Wichita Southeast to 56 rush yards on 35 attempts. Carroll also intercepted four Southeast passes and recovered a fumble.
Goddard won the “Roar on 54” with a 36-28 win over crosstown rival Goddard-Eisenhower. Erik Olivas led the Lions with 139 yards on the ground, while Bryer Rojas added a pair of rushing touchdowns. Brock Sullivan also rushed for 64 yards and a score. Sullivan and Olivas each threw touchdown passes for Goddard.
Topeka Highland Park improved to 2-0 with a 44-16 win over KC Sumner Academy. The Scots scored in each quarter and rushed for 330 yards on the night. Junior JoJo Kingcannon led Highland Park with 144 yards and a touchdown on only five attempts. Ghoni Montgomery and Dontrail Fox each rushed for touchdowns, while Fox threw a long touchdown pass to Kingcannon.
KC Washington exploded for 28 points in the second quarter in outscoring Bishop Ward, 62-42. Savion Stone passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns and added 141 yards rushing with two more scores. Camron Fields led the Wildcats with 168 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Fields also had five receptions for 112 yards and a score.
Basehor-Linwood scored 13 points in the final quarter to overtake KC Piper, 27-21. The Bobcats were led by Carson Dixon who passed for 94 yards and a touchdown and added 76 yards on the ground with two scores. Gavin Mitchell added 75 yards rushing and a touchdown for Basehor-Linwood.
Class 4A:
Defending champion Andover Central got back in the win column with a 27-18 decision over Newton. The Jaguars built a 20-6 lead at halftime and held off the Railers. Junior Jaxson Green led Central with 183 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns. Cooper Mason also returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown.
Labette County improved to 2-0 with a 27-20 win over Winfield. Deontae Fields rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Aaron Wyrick and Mikel Reed each rushed for scores. Wyrick also threw a touchdown pass to Nolan Nash who caught six passes for 140 yards.
McPherson doubled-up Towanda-Circle, 34-17. The Bullpups outscored the Thunderbirds 20-0 in the second half to take the victory. McPherson held Circle to 11 total rush yards on 28 attempts. Circle’s Mason Stobart passed for 219 yards and two scores. McPherson also doubled-up the Thunderbirds last season, 28-14.
Class 3A:
Pratt scored three touchdowns in the first quarter in blanking Halstead, 41-0. Four different Greenbacks rushed for touchdowns on the night. Cade Liggett rushed for 125 yards and a score, while Cresten Pore, Kyler Barker, and Arley Morrell each rushed for touchdowns. Morrell and Landon Demuth each returned fumbles for touchdowns as well.
Neodesha moved to 2-0 with Friday’s 35-8 win over Leon-Bluestem. The Bluestreaks scored in each quarter and rushed for 324 yards on the night. Cole Ramey carried five times for 100 yards and three touchdowns, while Camryn White and Tayte Leck each added rushing scores.
Parsons held off a fourth-quarter rally from Fort Scott to defeat the Tigers, 25-22. Andrew Houk passed for 137 yards and three touchdowns for the Vikings. Houk threw two touchdown passes to Wyatt Shultz and one to Chandler Hentzen. Hentzen also led the ground attack with 155 yards and a score on 28 carries. The victory was the first for Parsons over Fort Scott since 1994.
Clearwater rolled to a 47-0 shutout of El Dorado. Senior Garrison Wells carried 17 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns for the Indians. Clearwater rushed for 509 yards on 65 attempts in the game. Freshman quarterback Talen Tjaden passed for 81 yards including a touchdown to Lane Blevins. Blevins, sophomore Noah Manheim, and freshman Bear Bailey each added rushing touchdowns.
Hiawatha scored in each quarter in beating Marysville, 35-16. The Redhawks rushed for more than 350 yards on the night, led by senior Ethan Morton’s 171 yards and a score. Gus Smith added 135 yards and a touchdown on just six carries. Karson Henry completed both of his pass attempts for touchdowns to Michael Jensen covering 34 yards.
In one of the state’s best rivalries, Abilene held off Chapman 16-12. The Cowboys built a 13-0 lead in the first half and held off the Irish. Chapman scored on a Brecken Francis touchdown run and a fumble return for a touchdown by Ian Sayers.
Class 2A:
Russell moved to 2-0 with a 33-0 win against Oakley. Trey Zorn tossed two touchdown passes, while Walker Middleton was involved in three TDs, per KRSL Radio. Russell had its first road shutout since 2022. Russell limited Oakley to under 100 yards of offense.
Ellsworth beat Republic County, 40-16. The Bearcats scored in each quarter and rushed for 362 yards on the night. Senior Tucker Goss carried 29 times for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson Minear added 77 yards rushing and two scores, while Carson Jacobs added 41 yards and a score. Levi White led Republic County with 65 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Eureka rushed for 342 yards in beating Fredonia, 44-14. Senior quarterback Peyton Hare carried 15 times for 200 yards and four touchdowns and added 119 passing yards and a score. T.J. Mills caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Hare, while Justin Andrews added a rushing score for the Tornadoes. Kayson Farr rushed for 176 yards and a score to lead Fredonia, while Brayden O’Leary added 111 yards on 14 attempts.
Council Grove scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters in blanking Mission Valley, 41-0. Junior quarterback Reid Buttrey passed for 189 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers. Logan Stockwell, Blaise French, and Mason Samuels each caught touchdown passes. French added 94 yards and two scores, while Bradley Doornbos added 97 yards and a score.
Class 1A:
Uniontown picked up the first win for Coach Ben Aude by defeating Maranatha Academy, 14-6. The Eagles scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Colter Powell to Hunter Johnson and a touchdown run from Gaige Lape. Powell led the Uniontown offense with 93 rush yards on 15 attempts, while Lape added 67 yards on 13 carries.
Ellinwood improved to 2-0 with a 43-6 win over Herington. The Eagles gashed the Railers for 352 yards on the ground led by senior Drake Hosman’s 177 yards on 14 carries. Austin Brack added 133 yards and two rushing touchdowns for Ellinwood. Cade Coleman and Hosman each rushed for a touchdown. Coleman completed four passes – two of which went for touchdowns to Cohen Gunn.
Jefferson Co. North won the battle of the Chargers in shutting out Horton, 48-0. Quarterback Will Elias rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more scores for Jefferson Co. North. Elias threw touchdown passes to Rex Fuhrman and Christopher Noll, while Nick Cahill, Brody VanDyke, Knox Heston, and Grant Blattner each rushed for touchdowns.
Plainville rebounded from a Week 1 loss to Phillipsburg with a 51-7 win over Sacred Heart. Cardinal running back Draden Puckett rushed for 157 yards and five touchdowns in the win. Sacred Heart’s touchdown came on a pass from Maddox Wells to Noah Hines.
Thomas More Prep-Marian rolled over Norton, 55-6, in a road Mid-Continent League contest. TMP had lost 10 straight to the Bluejays dating back to 2011. It marked the second time ever the Monarchs had beaten Norton since at least 1970. Jacob Seib and Grant Nehels each had pick-sixes. Jackson Gillespie opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown, while Seib also had a receiving TD.
Class 8-man I
WaKeeney-Trego moved to 2-0 with a 54-6 victory against defending state champion Hoxie. The Golden Eagles are 2-0 for the first time since 2021. Trego held Hoxie to 47 plays for 185 yards. Senior quarterback Ashton Wynn completed eight of nine passes for 80 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed six times for 34 yards and two scores. Junior Jack Conness rushed 15 times for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Standout freshman Vladon Crawford caught his first career TD pass. The highly experienced senior trio of Aaron Samson, Ashton Wynn and Cass Smith delivered 10, 16 and 17 tackles, respectively.
Oswego defeated rival St. Paul, 65-18. Oswego led 20-0 after the first quarter and 40-12 at halftime. Sophomore Demitri Williamson rushed 15 times for 211 yards and four scores. Senior Owen Jackson recorded eight carries for 39 yards and four touchdowns. Oswego delivered 466 yards of total offense.
Central Burden beat Argonia-Attica, 22-20, in double overtime. No one scored in the first three quarters. Burden sophomore Treighton Hafenstein enjoyed a big game with 11 of 18 passing for 95 yards. He also rushed 18 times for 117 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Hunter Henderson paced Burden with 16 tackles.
Oberlin-Decatur Community defeated Dighton, 56-16. Oberlin led 16-8 after the first quarter and 22-8 at halftime. The Red Devils held Dighton to 32 carries for 71 yards.
Hill City bounced back from its loss to WaKeeney-Trego and defeated Ellis, 62-26, in a Mid-Continent League contest. The Ringnecks rushed 45 times for 356 yards and eight scores. Ellis sophomore Trent Schartz completed 15 of 40 passes for 192 yards with three scores against three interceptions.
Atwood-Rawlins County has yet to allow a point through two weeks with a total margin of 98-0. That included a 52-0 win versus Tribune-Greeley County. Sophomore Dominique Paz rushed 11 times for 78 yards and three scores.
Congratulations to Coach Zach Vance for picking up his first career win as his Northeast-Arma Vikings defeated Colony-Crest, 42-14. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for the Vikings. Northeast led 22-8 at halftime after three touchdown passes from quarterback Jackson Payne. Payne threw five touchdown passes on the night.
Class 8-man II
Thunder Ridge defeated Mankato-Rock Hills, 38-0. Sophomore Tate Foreman completed nine of 11 passes for 140 yards with three scores.
Hutchinson Central Christian defeated Canton-Galva, 56-8. Senior Konnor Sullivan rushed 15 times for 201 yards and six scores. Senior Piercen Huff had 10 carries for 120 yards and two scores.
Marmaton Valley defeated Yates Center, 46-0, at halftime. Marmaton Valley led 30-0 after the first quarter. Senior Tyler Lord completed eight of 14 passes for 121 yards with two touchdowns. Junior Cooper Schraff finished with seven carries for 133 yards and four scores.
6-Man
Northern Valley beat Chase, 74-12, in a game called at halftime. The Huskies led 46-0 after the first quarter. The Huskies averaged 20 yards per carry. Sophomore Zane Brown led with 80 rushing yards and two scores. Brown tacked on two non-offensive touchdowns with a pick-six and a fumble returned for a score.
Cheylin lost to Idalia (Co.) in a 75-30 game that ended at halftime. Idalia led 36-6 after the first quarter. Idalia rushed 18 times for 356 yards and seven scores.
Non-KSHSAA
Reno County Homeschool defeated Norwich, 60-14. The Sabres led 29-8 after the first quarter and 42-14 at halftime. The game ended in the middle of the third quarter. Junior quarterback Bo Smith completed six of nine passes for 103 yards with a score. He also rushed seven times for 138 yards and three TDs. Freshman Rock Smith posted 10 carries for 195 yards and three scores.
