Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Shawnee Mission South scored a touchdown in each quarter to defeat rival Shawnee Mission West, 27-21. Grant Jennings passed for 191 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders. He also added 76 yards rushing and a score. Ben Johnson led South’s ground game with 156 yards on 22 attempts. A’Quan Dunbar caught four passes for 113 yards and two scores for the Raiders. Shawnee Mission West was led by Noah Gunion’s 198 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Dodge City scored 35 points in the first half en route to a 42-12 win over Wichita South. Kaden Garvelena passed for 178 yards and two touchdown passes for the Red Demons. Isaiah Taylor, Chance Kerr, and Chris Gomez each rushed for touchdowns for Dodge City. Taylor and Vincent Ortiz had receiving scores.

Wichita Heights scored in each of the first three quarters to top Wichita North, 20-0. D.J. Dingle rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns and added 80 yards passing on the night. Cale Milleson led the Falcons with a game-high 135 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Blue Valley West’s ground game produced five rushing touchdowns in a 42-7 win over Blue Valley Southwest. The Jaguars won for the second consecutive week thanks to 281 yards on the ground led by junior Sage Huffman’s 172 yards and two scores. Nick Taylor added 88 yards and a touchdown, while Brayden Nagy and Zach Darche each added rushing scores. The Jaguar defense held Blue Valley Southwest to 29 rush yards on 27 attempts.


Class 5A:

Shawnee Heights improved to 2-1 with a 14-7 victory over Topeka Seaman. Allen Baughman rushed for 183 yards and a pair of scores to lead the T-Bird offense. Baughman has now rushed for 497 yards and seven touchdowns in Heights’ first three games.

Pittsburg picked up its first win of the Josh Lattimer era with a 28-20 decision over Labette County. The Purple Dragons were led by junior Wyatt Rink’s 143 yards rushing on the night. Rink added one of four rushing touchdowns for the Dragons. Webb Fern, Conner Proffitt, and Stone Peery also scored for Pittsburg High. Quarterback Kendall Holtzman passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns to lead Labette County.

Junior quarterback Gunnar Gross passed for 288 yards and two touchdowns as Salina Central rolled to a 56-24 win over Emporia. Six different Mustang receivers caught passes led by Dez Gibson’s five receptions for 94 yards and a score. Tanner Ryan and Hunter Mowrey each caught touchdown passes. Sophomore Jack Gordan also threw a touchdown pass. Kenyon McMillan led the Central ground game with 107 yards and a score, while Gross added four rushing touchdowns.

Valley Center’s Dai-Mont Mucker rushed for a touchdown and sophomore Carlos Gonzalez added the PAT as the Hornets edged Goddard-Eisenhower, 7-6. Both teams struggled to run the football as Mucker’s game-high 80 yards came on 34 carries, and Eisenhower netted 13 total rush yards on 29 attempts.


Class 4A:

Andover Central scored all 10 points in the second quarter of a 10-0 shutout of Arkansas City. The Jaguars produced 242 yards of total offense with Jace Rees’ scoring run resulting in the game’s only touchdown. Isaac Saye also connected on a 29-yard field goal for the Jaguars.

Towanda-Circle remained unbeaten with a 22-12 win over Winfield. Senior quarterback Cooper Chadwell passed for 140 yards – 109 of which went to Ty Smith including a touchdown. Westin Rose added a touchdown on the ground for the T-Birds.

Clayton Younger’s 1-yard touchdown run late in the game and Hayden Worden’s PAT propelled Paola to a 21-20 win over Ottawa. The Panthers trailed for much of the game thanks to two turnovers returned by the Cyclones for touchdowns. Ottawa returned a Paola fumble and an interception back for scores to take a 14-0 lead. Landon Taylor led Paola with 131 yards rushing, while Charlie Zeller added 119 yards on the ground.

Coffeyville-Field Kindley scored in each quarter in defeating former SEK League rival Columbus, 34-19. The Golden Tornado rushed for 430 yards on the night led by Jeremy Colbert, Jr. who rushed for 240 yards and three scores on 27 attempts. Keshawn Hayes added a touchdown run and Axel Erne tossed a touchdown pass to Amir Luten. Brett Hamilton passed for 203 yards and two scores for Columbus.


Class 3A:

Clearwater scored twice in each of the first two quarters to take control and then held off Rose Hill, 34-10. Senior quarterback Tyler Fugarino passed for 128 yards and threw two touchdown passes to sophomore Cooper Williams on the night. Williams caught four balls for 86 yards. Weston Burford led the Indian ground game with 61 yards and a touchdown.

Wellsville fell behind Burlington after one quarter before outscoring the Wildcats 25-0 the rest of the way for a 25-7 victory. Senior back Nash Money led the Eagles with 211 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 28 carries. William Dorsey added 106 yards through the air including a touchdown pass to Devin Haas.  Burlington’s points came on an interception return for a touchdown by Trey Faimon.

Clay Center stopped Abilene’s two-game momentum by defeating the Cowboys, 58-14. The Tigers rushed for 465 yards on the night led by three backs that topped the 100-yard mark. Sophomore Owen Craig led Clay Center with 122 yards rushing, while junior Carter Long added 121 yards and junior Brody Hayes added 104 yards and two scores. Mark Hoffman and Colten Tadtman each added rushing scores for the Tigers, while Hoffman also threw a touchdown pass to Hayes.

Holcomb blanked Ulysses thanks to another big night from junior all-purpose player Demon Mesa. Mesa rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown, passed for 63 yards and two scores, and caught a 23-yard pass on the night. Tristin Ortner and Manny Reyes each caught touchdown passes from Mesa. 

Tra Mack passed for 263 yards and five touchdowns as Parsons remained unbeaten with a 40-14 win over Iola. Mack connected with senior Jessie Jones four times for 179 yards and three scores on the night. Mack also hooked up with J.J. Kendrick on a pair of receptions spanning 85 yards and a touchdown, and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Riley Baker. Jahmarion Washington added 107 yards and a score on the ground for the Vikings.


Class 2A:

Eureka returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown but after that Caney Valley dominated the Tri-Valley League game 44-8. Caleb Cornett’s 80-yard sprint on the opening kickoff gave Eureka an 8-0 advantage after Wylee Boulanger’s conversion run. Caney Valley then scored 36 points before halftime to take control. The Bullpup defense held Eureka to 89 total yards and forced five turnovers. Ashton King rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns and Jackson Griffin added 121 yards and two scores for Caney Valley.

Thomas More Prep-Marian defeated Plainville, 27-13, and moved to 3-0. The Monarchs led 7-0 after the first quarter and 21-0 at halftime and 27-0 after three quarters. Plainville allowed 13 points in the fourth quarter. The Monarchs continued to be run heavy with 41 of its 48 snaps on the ground. Senior Kade Harris had 16 carries for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Overall, Harris delivered 182 all-purpose yards. Senior Landon Rozean and sophomore Austin Gilbert tied for the team lead with eight tackles. Plainville is 0-3.

Beloit opened 0-2 and delivered a 52-8 win against Republic County. The Trojans scored 44 straight points to open the contest. Logan Arasmith had 27 carries for 297 yards and five touchdowns in replacing all-state running back Benson Berndt. Grady Seyfert, the reigning 2A defensive player of the year, had six tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.

Humboldt delivered a 44-0 win against Neodesha. The Cubs are 3-0 and will face much-improved 3-0 Council Grove in a critical District 2 opener this Friday. Humboldt has allowed just 18 points this season. Humboldt senior Trey Sommer had 16 carries for 128 yards and two scores. Sophomore Blake Ellis delivered seven of eight passing for 133 yards with two scores against zero interceptions. Humboldt led 16-0 after the first quarter and 38-0 at halftime.

Ellsworth improved to a surprising 3-0 with a 52-0 win against Sacred Heart. Junior Will Cravens completed 8 of 16 passes for 258 yards with four scores against one interception. Sophomore Landin Johnson had 12 carries for 127 and a TD. Junior Loden West had nine carries for 53 yards and two scores. Cole Webber had four catches for 195 yards and three scores.

Hoisington defeated Lyons, 56-6, and moved to 2-1. Senior Leyton Haxton and junior Tony Moore each passed for a touchdown. Moore rushed four times for 101 yards and a score. Overall, Hoisington rushed 31 rushes for 367 yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore Teron Kraft and senior Chase Steinert each rushed two rushing TDs.

Lakin defeated 3A Goodland, 45-20. The Broncs rolled up 587 yards of offense. Sophomore Colter Oldham had 13 carries for 278 yards and three scores. Junior Maddux Beltran delivered 11 rushes for 79 yards and three TDs. Lakin improved to 3-0. Goodland is 0-3. Junior Manuel Gonzalez rushed for 109 yards, while senior Mason Hernandez has 126 rushing yards and two scores.


Class 1A:

Jackson Heights improved to 3-0 and defeated Pleasant Ridge, 49-28. Pleasant Ridge outgained Jackson Heights, 408-365. Alex Browning delivered 17 carries for 78 yards and a score. Drake Mellies had eight carries for 72 yards and two scores. Kade Holliday completed 5 of 6 passes for 92 yards and a score. Mellies also rushed for a touchdown. Pleasant Ridge opened with a 6-0 lead and the game was tied at 14 at halftime. In the third quarter, Mellies had a pair of scoring runs of six and 33 yards to break ahead. JH was plus-2 in turnover margin.

Wabaunsee delivered a solid 24-8 win against Jefferson County North and set up a big district opener against No. 2 Smith Center. The game was tied at zero after the first quarter and at eight at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, Wabaunsee outscored JCN, 16-0, in the fourth quarter. Junior Zach Frank delivered 21 carries for 85 yards and two scores. Junior Wyatt Wurtz completed eight of 17 passes for 68 yards with zero touchdowns against two INTs, along with 11 carries for 43 yards and a score. Senior Maverick Havenstein had four pancake blocks.

Hutchinson Trinity, which dropped to 1A, improved to 3-0 with a 48-16 win against Remington. Junior Eric Armour continued his big season with 12 of 14 passes for 296 yards with four scores against no interceptions. Senior Caleb Sanger had a pair of rushing scores. Senior Blake Hammeke recorded five catches for 132 yards and a score. Senior Aidan Armour delivered three catches for 84 yards and two TDs. Junior Ezekiel Suter had three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Junior Gavin Wilson recorded 17 tackles.

St. Mary’s Colgan won its home-opener at Hutchinson Field with a 54-14 decision over Riverton on Thursday night. Junior back Cooper Simmons rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown to lead the Panthers. Quarterback Tucker Harrell and senior Keagan Fleming each rushed for two touchdowns on the night, while freshman Klayton Adamson added a long touchdown run. Harrell also tossed a pair of touchdown passes, throwing one each to Colin Hite and Connor VanBecelaere.


Class 8-man I

In the longtime rivalry of teams in neighboring counties, Hodgeman County defeated Spearville, 18-16, with a late fumble recovery for a touchdown. Hodgeman County standout quarterback Owen Reece was hurt in Week 2. Sawyer Bowman recorded 13 carries for 85 yards. The Longhorns had 244 total yards, including 217 rushing.

West Elk delivered a quality 28-6 win against Central Burden. Sophomore Creyo Koop delivered another massive game with 36 carries for 245 yards and three scores. WE improved to 3-0 and limited Central Burden’s passing attack to 9 of 20 for 56 yards with a score against an interception. Senior Tate Stewart finished with 12 tackles, while Koop finished with eight tackles.

Burlingame cruised to a 56-6 win against Hartford and improved to 3-0. The Bearcats will face Division I No. 2-ranked Chase County in a huge District 2 opener this week. Sophomore JD Tyson and senior Colby Middleton both tossed a touchdown pass. Tyson rushed for two scores, Middleton one. Senior Matthew Heckman, sophomore Dane Winters and senior Jace Dewitt all rushed for a touchdown. Heckman caught two passes for 89 yards, both for TDs.

Cair Paravel lost a competitive game to Eight-Man, Division II No. 1 Axtell in the season opener. Since then, Cair Paravel has captured two straight wins, including a 60-8 victory versus Marais des Cygnes Valley. Junior Evan Will accounted for a TD in all three phases: one passing, one rushing and one receiving score. Sophomore Jase Pavlik completed 3 of 4 passes for 79 yards with two scores.

Meade bumped its winning streak to 18 games with a 51-6 victory against Satanta. Meade led 43-0 after the first quarter. The defending champion Buffs had 36 plays for 315 yards and limited the Indians to 39 yards. Meade opened the game with a 50-yard kickoff return for a score. The Buffs’ first second quarter score came on a pick-six. Grayden Stapleton had a passing score, two rushing TDs and a receiving score.


Class 8-man II

Beloit St. John’s-Tipton defeated Lincoln, 68-24, and moved to 3-0. BSJT led 28-8 after the first quarter. Sophomore Tyson Gates completed 12 of 16 passes for 183 yards for two scores against zero interceptions. Junior Chance Jermark had 18 carries for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Gates delivered 17 carries for 130 yards and four scores. BSJT ran 60 plays for 445 yards. Junior Chance Jermark hauled in a 65-yard receiving TD.

Lakeside-Downs rolled to a 48-0 road win against Logan-Palco. The Knights are 3-0 and has an intriguing home game with 2-1 Osborne this week. Sophomore Kaden McCoy is 2 of 2 with 71 yards and an interception. The Knights delivered 14 carries for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Ian Kresin had six carries for 173 yards and two scores. Sophomore Kaden McCoy had six carries for 128 yards and two scores. Kresin had a 34-yard receiving score.

South Barber rolled to a 68-0 win against Fairfield and improved to 3-0. SB had 24 points in the first quarter and 44 in the second. South Barber held Fairfield to two total yards. Junior Briggs Jewell delivered 6 of 7 passing for 145 yards for four touchdowns. He finished with five carries for 49 yards and a TD. Senior Cash Tomberlin finished with three catches for 115 yards, all for scores.

Bucklin defeated Sublette, 66-28, and has a key road game versus Minneola. Coach Trever Powell has the Red Aces at 3-0 with a total margin of 152-48. Sophomore Lucas Kirk completed 11 of 18 passes for 163 yards for five touchdowns. Bucklin had 36 carries for 142 yards and two scores.

Minneola has opened 3-0 after a 75-32 win against South Gray. Junior Eli Lang enjoyed a huge performance with 14 of 26 for 305 yards with five touchdowns against no interceptions. He also rushed 11 times for 221 yards and three TDs. Lang delivered 10 tackles, had a 42-yard punt and a pair of two-point conversions.


6-Man

Wetmore beat Peabody-Burns, 46-6. The Cardinals’ players of the game were middle linebacker/running back Dierk Hanzlick and quarterback/defensive end Kyler Wommack. Hanzlick finished 3 of 3 passing for 72 yards with a touchdown. Rushing-wise, Hanzlick finished with 15 carries for 147 yards and three scores. Senior Jacob Carls finished with five catches for 117 yards and a TD.

Deerfield defeated Golden Plains, 32-24. The Spartans led 13-2 after the first inning and 19-2 at halftime. Deerfield named Irvin Rodriguez, Maverick Najera, Cesar Ramirez and Ryan Musil as the team’s players of the game. Najera, a sophomore, completed 9 of 19 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. Ramirez delivered 18 carries for 79 yards. Najera finished with 10 carries for 63 yards and two scores. Musil had six catches for 104 yards.
