Some stories just need to be told. In some cases, they even need to be further examined and retold.

This is where the Kansas Sports Chronicles come in. It’s the place that goes beyond the box score and shares Kansas sports’ most interesting tales.

Think of it as a written version of ESPN’s 30 for 30 that is dedicated to the Sunflower State. We will share the stories of the state’s best athletes and coaches, as well as take a closer look at some of the all-time great rivalries, teams and games. We also will deliver the under-the-radar stories you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

If you’re a sports fan who wants more than a game story, the Kansas Sports Chronicles is the place for you.

Fittingly, the series starts with arguably the greatest athlete in state history – Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders.

However, “From Kansas to Canton” doesn’t focus on Sanders’ 10 Pro Bowl seasons with the Detroit Lions nor even his Heisman Trophy year at Oklahoma State. Instead, readers get to relive Sanders’ senior football season at Wichita North High School through the eyes of his former coach, a teammate, an opponent and a Wichita sportswriter.

We dug into the archives to tell the story of how an undersized wingback took over the starting running back position in the fourth game of the season and then went to become one of the all-time greats.

But Sanders’ story is just the start. There are many more great Kansas sports stories that need to be told.

As a lifetime sports fan and Kansas resident, I can’t wait to tell them.
