Highly recruited defensive lineman Peyton Newell announced Friday that he will attend the University of Nebraska.

Newell (6-3, 280) reportedly held 34 Division I offers but decided on the Cornhuskers over Kansas, Kansas State, and South Carolina.  He narrowed his college choices to those four schools on June 29 via his Twitter (@p_newell) feed.

Peyton enters his senior season as one of the top five recruits in the state of Kansas.  He is listed among the top 25 prospects in the nation at defensive end and defensive tackle by various recruiting sites.  The Hiawatha senior has been highly touted for his strength and athleticism.  He has a verified bench press of 380 pounds and squat of 605 pounds, while sporting a 4.8 second 40-yard dash and a 33-inch vertical jump.  A three-year starter on both sides of the ball, Newell has registered 179 tackles, 73 tackles for loss, 11 forced fumbles, and 21 sacks  in his high school career.

The Redhawks return nine starters on each side of the ball and look to build on an 8-3 season in 2012 in which they reached the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
