Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Shawnee Mission Northwest picked up its fourth consecutive win by holding off Lawrence Free State, 27-24. The Cougars built a 21-10 lead at halftime with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Joshua Mackiewicz caught a touchdown pass from Logan Morley and Traimyre Woodrush rushed for a score in the quarter. Woodrush rushed for two touchdowns and Mackiewicz added a touchdown run. John Whitener rushed for 118 yards for the Cougars. Parker Moore rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns for Free State.

Olathe East snapped a two-game losing streak with a 35-28, four-overtime win over Shawnee Mission East. The Hawks had dropped consecutive games to Shawnee Mission Northwest (31-21) and Lawrence (42-28) before Friday’s four-OT marathon. The Hawks are 5-2 an in contention for a top four seed on the eastern half of Class 6A. Shawnee Mission East was led by Jack Reeves’ 145 rushing yards. Reeves rushed for two scores and threw two touchdown passes.

Olathe South scored in each quarter and held off Lawrence, 40-28. The Falcons led 10-0 after the first quarter and 19-14 at halftime. South held a 33-21 lead after three quarters. Lawrence was led by Banks Bowen’s 310 passing yards with a touchdown. Bowen also added 96 yards on the ground. Jackson Becker caught seven passes for 107 yards, while Tahj Edwards rushed for two touchdowns.

Wichita Heights scored in each quarter in blasting Wichita North, 61-7. The Falcons rushed for 364 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Darius Rogers rushed for 127 yards and three scores, while Lucas Meyer added 170 yards and a score. Zane Masterson passed for 161 yards and two touchdowns – both to Rogers who had 142 receiving yards.

Maize won for a third consecutive week by besting Valley Center, 37-7. Quarterback Brayden Myovela passed for 166 yards and three touchdowns – two to Bryson Hayes who had 78 receiving yards. Shannon Jones added 83 yards rushing and two scores.

 

Class 5A:

Pittsburg forced a turnover on Chanute’s overtime possession to outlast the Blue Comets, 41-35. The game was close throughout with the Purple Dragons leading 21-20 at halftime. Four Dragons rushed for touchdowns including Conner Proffitt, Carsen Nickelson, Stone Peery, and Nate Mitchell. Mitchell rushed for 109 yards while Proffitt added 80 yards and caught a touchdown pass.

Andover held off Salina Central, 21-14, to improve to 4-3. Noah Noyes carried 28 times for 169 yards and a touchdown. Benjamin Reynolds and Quincy Jones each added rushing scores for the Trojans. Andover will host Andover Central this week.

Hutchinson scored 42 points in the first quarter in rolling past Newton, 56-0. The Salthawk rushed for more than 400 yards on the night and did not complete a pass. Kade Smith rushed four times for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Terrell King added 112 yards and three touchdowns on six carries. The Salthawks held Newton to 88 yards of total offense.  

Topeka Highland Park rolled to a 70-0 win over KC East (Mo.). Jamon Wilson rushed for 120 yards and three touchdowns on only four carries. Dontrall Fox rushed for a score and passed for two touchdowns – one each to Ricky Crawford and G’honi Montgomery. The Scots are 5-2 entering the final week of the regular season.

Spring Hill scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and three more in the third quarter to pull away from Emporia for a 49-7 win. Jordan Miller passed for 134 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos. Patrick Stumpff led Spring Hill with 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 16 attempts.  


Class 4A:

Lansing defeated Shawnee Heights, 31-21, to improve to 4-3. The Lions were led by Jaxon Pollard’s 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries. Reid Oakley passed for 317 yards with touchdowns to Braden Jackson and Tanner Kell. Aiden Scott passed for 414 yards and three scores for Shawnee Heights. Tyren Parker caught eight passes for 172 yards and a score for the T-Birds, while A.J. Gallegos added eight catches for 156 yards and a touchdown.

Fort Scott scored 36 points in the first half en route to a 58-22 rout of Towanda-Circle. The Tigers improved to 4-3 with the victory – their first season since 2020 with at least four wins. Westin Rose led Circle with a pair of rushing touchdowns and he caught a touchdown pass from Mason Stobart.

Labette County shut out Independence, 28-0, to improve to 4-3 on the season. Jamaal Jackson rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries. Aaron Wyrick passed for 113 yards and a score that went to Kegan Bates. 

Mulvane bested Coffeyville, 44-28, to improve to 6-1 on the season. The Wildcats are now tied with Wamego and Andover Central for the best record on the western half of Class 4A. Coffeyville fell to 2-5 with the loss despite 401 rushing yards on the night. Aaron Tunstall led the Golden Tornado with 22 carries for 219 yards and two scores, while Trenton Akins added 137 yards and two scores on eight attempts.

Tonganoxie picked up a key Frontier League win by handling Eudora, 35-14. The Chieftains led 28-0 after three quarters thanks to a balanced offense that rushed for nearly 250 yards and passed for nearly 150 yards. Talon Langford passed for 149 yards and added 48 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Tonganoxie was led by Tanner Hand’s 129 rushing yards on 17 carries. Hand rushed for three touchdowns.


Class 3A:

Pratt kept pace in the competitive Class 3A, District 7 with a 36-7 win over Clearwater. Senior Taye Wilson rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Caleb Strong added a rushing score and Cresten Pore threw a touchdown pass to Owen Schmidt for the Greenbacks. Clearwater’s touchdown came on a scoring run from Cooper Williams.

Prairie View scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to pull away in beating Girard, 49-14. Parker Schwarz rushed 17 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns to push his season total to 1,544 yards and 20 touchdowns. Josh Goodwin added a pair of rushing touchdowns and 51 yards rushing. Wyatt Attebery added 78 yards on the ground.

Hesston remained unbeaten and set up their showdown with No. 1 Andale by beating Riley County, 28-0. Karter Gonzalez rushed 22 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns for the Swathers. Jerick Humphreys passed for 137 yards and threw touchdown passes to Asher Deutschendorf and Daxon Deering.

Holcomb rushed for 260 yards in topping Hugoton, 32-6. The Longhorns were led by Korbin Johnson’s 174 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Keegan Johnson added two touchdowns on the ground for Holcomb.

Holton scored 21 points in the second quarter and topped Hiawatha, 35-14. The Wildcats got on the board on an 85-yard touchdown run by Bodie Dillon. The Wildcat defense forced a turnover and Cael Frazier’s short touchdown run gave them the lead. Frazier scored once more before halftime and Korban Wilson added a third-quarter score to extend the lead to 28-7. Wilson would add one more score to extend the Holton lead to 35-14.

Emmett Hazen kicked a 29-yard field goal to propel Burlington to a 38-35 win over Iola. Burlington led 14-7 at halftime and 20-19 after three quarters before outscoring the Mustangs 18-16 in the fourth quarter. Chance Hegg passed for 164 yards and two scores – one each to Eli Ervin and Brody Anderson. Anderson caught 12 passes for 138 yards. Hunter Cole rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Hegg added 97 yards rushing and two scores.


Class 2A:

Beloit turned in a strong defensive performance in defeating Ellsworth, 20-7. The Trojans limited Ellsworth to 66 total yards and held Bearcat senior Landin Johnson to seven rush yards on 20 attempts. Johnson entered the contest averaging 206 rushing yards per game.  

Haven scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters in rolling past Chaparral, 42-7. Nash Wray passed for 136 yards and three scores – one each to Aiden Hoopes, Grant Patry and C.R. Ingold. Vance Loop added 102 yards on the ground with two touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Cimarron rolled to a 51-6 victory over Southwestern Heights to improve to 2-5 on the season. Senior quarterback Trace Kopper passed for 161 yards and three touchdowns for the Blue Jays. McCoy Nash added 171 yards on the ground with four touchdowns, while Kopper rushed for 156 yards and a score. Coulter Dohrmann caught three passes for 112 yards and two scores for Cimarron. Luis Martinez led Southwestern Heights with 94 yards rushing on 13 attempts, while Julius Trejo added 75 yards and a touchdown.

The St. Marys Bears picked up a win in the touch Class 2A, District 3 by holding off Council Grove, 22-6. The Bears forced four Council Grove turnovers including three interceptions. The Braves lone touchdown came on a pass from Luke Stewart to Hayden Buttrey. For St. Marys to make the playoffs, the Bears must hope Silver Lake can beat Council Grove this week.

Central Heights kept hopes of a district title alive with a 20-14 win over Eureka. The Vikings remain unbeaten in district play and will take on powerful Humboldt this week to decide the District 2 championship. Brody Roullett rushed for two touchdowns and threw a scoring pass to Colt King to account for the Vikings points. Eureka got touchdown runs from Peyton Hare and T.J. Mills.


Class 1A:

Sterling clinched a playoff spot with a 55-18 win over South Sumner County. The Black Bears led 35-18 at halftime before blanking the Outlaws in the second half. Junior standout Zane Farney rushed 17 times for 300 yards and six touchdowns to lead Sterling. The Black Bears raced for 552 rushing yards on the night.

St. Mary’s Colgan scored all 41 points in the first half and cruised to a 41-8 win over Erie. The game was shortened with a running clock in the second half. Carston Simmons passed for 153 yards and two scores for Colgan. Noah Duncan rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on four carries, while Lane Stultz added four carries for 44 yards and a score.

Mission Valley scored in the fourth quarter to top Wabaunsee, 20-15. Porter Deters rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Vikings. Colin Clay added the other Mission Valley score. Wabaunsee got touchdowns from Wyatt Gehrt and Isaac Meyer.

Pleasanton picked up a 27-14 district win over Uniontown. The Blu-Jays also sewed up a playoff spot with the victory. Eli McGinnis rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns for Pleasanton, while Kam Staton passed for 120 yards and two scores. Mario Davis caught both of Staton’s touchdown passes and had 111 receiving yards. Gaige Lape led Uniontown with 112 yards rushing and a score.  

Medicine Lodge kept pace in the competitive District 7 race with a 13-0 shutout of Hutchinson Trinity. The Indians scored solo touchdowns in the first and second quarter of the game. Braxx Farr rushed for 152 yards and both scores for Medicine Lodge.

Sacred Heart clinched a playoff spot with a 22-16 road win over Herington. Sophomore Maddox Wells passed for 194 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights. Dom Matteucci led the Sacred Heart ground game with 120 yards on 20 attempts.


Thomas More Prep-Marian cruised to a 56-16 home win against Syracuse. The Monarchs improved to 5-2 and clinched a winning season for the first time three years. Adler Brown opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown, Grant Nehls caught a 22-yard touchdown pass and Austin Gilbert scored on a three-yard run. TMP led 50-0 at halftime, per Hays Post. Carson Liles completed 12 of 19 passes for 220 yards and three scores.



Class 8-man I

Oswego coach Matt Fowler earned career win No. 100. Fowler has significant stints at Spearville and Oswego and won a state title with the Lancers. Oswego stands a 5-2, 3-1 in District 1. The Indians posted a 55-6 win against Cedar Vale-Dexter. Oswego posted 16 rushes for 398 yards and eight scores. Senior Josh Hutchinson and freshman Demitri Williamson each rushed for three scores and tallied 105 and 146 rushing yards, respectively.

Ellis (5-2, 3-1 in District 7) clinched its first winning season since 2015. The Railroaders defeated Ness City, 66-20. Freshman Trenton Schartz continued his fine season with seven of 17 passes for 98 yards and two scores. Schartz also carried 12 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Caleb Noble finished with four catches for 60 yards and a score, while junior Ben Byers added five receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.

WaKeeney-Trego (3-4, 3-1 in District 7) rolled over La Crosse, 66-20. Junior Ashton Wynn posted eight of 14 passing for 118 yards and three scores. Wynn had 11 carries for 132 yards and four scores. Sophomore Jack Conness posted 14 carries for 105 yards and two TDs. WaKeeney has won three straight games.


Class 8-man II

Marmaton Valley defeated Colony-Crest, 60-14. Senior Brayden Lawson completed nine of 14 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed eight times for 146 yards and five TDs. The Wildcats intercepted two passes and recovered two fumbles.

Minneola moved to 7-0 with a 48-0 win against Deerfield. Junior Levi Lang posted five of five passing for 168 yards and four scores. Minneola posted seven rushes for 84 yards and three TDs. Junior Tyson Klotz rushed four times for 39 yards and two scores. Jesse Smith caught three passes for 124 yards, all for touchdowns, including a 50-yard score.

Bucklin dominated Satanta, 88-0. Minneola and Bucklin are both undefeated and will play for the district title this week. The Red Aces (7-0) had 19 carries for 373 yards and seven touchdowns. Sophomore Miles Haskell and senior Kolson Cook each had four rushes, two for scores. Haskell finished with 94 rushing yards, while Cook had 123. Cook finished with 16 tackles.

Osborne beat Linn, 54-0. The Bulldogs threw just one pass, a completion for minus-four yards. Osborne rushed 30 times for 199 yards and six touchdowns. Senior Dalton Garman delivered 10 carries for 95 yards and three scores. Junior Kaiden Schultze rushed eight times for 23 yards and three scores.

Blue Valley Randolph defeated Beloit St. John’s-Tipton, 48-0. The Rams held the Blujays to 36 plays for 88 yards.


6-Man

Marais des Cygnes Valley defeated Southern Coffey County, 54-0. MdCV scored 40 points in the first quarter. Sophomore Landon Reed completed nine of 11 passes for 97 yards with two touchdowns against no interceptions. Freshman Ricky Traver had six rushes for 68 yards, including a 51-yard run, and a score. Sophomore Landon Traver and senior Trey Decavale posted nine carries for 99 yards and four scores.

Tescott improved to 5-2 with a 62-6 district win against Chase. The Trojans will finish as the runner-up in District 2.
