District Playoff Scenarios: 4A-I & 4A-II

We’ve analyzed the records, completed all the calculations, and researched all of the district tie-breakers. The result is this complete narrative of the district playoff scenarios for every district in the state – all classifications.

Class 4A-I:

District 1 – Basehor-Linwood has clinched a playoff spot with a 2-0 start to district play.  The Bobcats are +35 in district points and can finish no worse than the top two.  Piper, Atchison, and Tonganoxie still have the ability to gain the other playoff spot.  Atchison must beat Piper by at least 15 points and hope for a Tonganoxie loss to qualify as the runner-up.  Both Tonganoxie and Atchison have been dealt some significant injuries to key players in the past two weeks.

District 2 – Top-ranked Bishop Miege has clinched at least a playoff spot as even with a big loss this week, the Stags can finish no worse than in the top two in district margin points.  De Soto can clinch the runner-up spot with a win at Eudora. Spring Hill can still get into the playoffs with a loss, but has to hope for a Eudora win over De Soto.

District 3 – Ottawa has clinched the district championship with wins over Louisburg and Paola. The winner of the Louisburg game at Paola will advance to the playoffs as the district runner-up.

District 4 – Independence has clinched a playoff spot as even with a 21-point loss to Chanute and a Coffeyville win, the Bulldogs would finish in the top two in terms of district points. Chanute qualifies for the playoffs with a win by 14 or more points over Indy.  Coffeyville advances with a win and a Chanute loss to Indy.  Meanwhile, Labette County can get the runner-up spot with a win by beating Coffeyville by at least 14 points, coupled with a Chanute loss to Indy.

District 5 – Mulvane has clinched a playoff spot as even with a 21-point loss to Winfield and a Ulysses win, the Wildcats would finish in the top two in terms of district points. Ulysses qualifies for the playoffs with a win over Wellington. Winfield needs to upset Mulvne and hope for a Ulysses loss to Wellington to advance.  Even Wellington has a chance as the Crusaders would qualify with at least a 15-point win over Ulysses coupled with a Winfield loss to Mulvane.

District 6 – Maize South has clinched a playoff spot.  Even if the Mavericks lose to Andover Central by 21 or more points, they would finish in the top two in district points margin.  Augusta qualifies with a win at Rose Hill.  Last season’s state runner-up Andover Central needs to upset Maize South handily and hope for a big Rose Hill win over Augusta. Rose Hill can qualify by beating Augusta by at least 18 points and hope for an Andover Central loss.

District 7 – Buhler is the district champion having already beaten Andale and El Dorado.  Andale visits El Dorado on Friday night with the winner advancing as the runner-up.

District 8 – McPherson has clinched a playoff spot as even with a 21-point loss to Abilene and a Hays win, the Bullpups would finish in the top two in terms of district points. Abilene can win the district title with a 16-point or more win over McPherson.  Hays gets into the playoffs by beating Wamego coupled with an Abilene loss to McPherson.

Class 4A-II:

District 1 – Topeka Hayden had already clinched the championship with wins over Santa Fe Trial and Holton.  Holton clinched the runner-up spot on Thursday night with a 36-24 win over Santa Fe Trail.

District 2 – Baldwin is in the driver’s seat in District 2 and can claim the district title with a win over Prairie View.  Osawatomie can advance by beating winless Ward at home coupled with a Baldwin victory.

District 3 – District 3 was decided on Thursday night as both Girard advanced to the playoffs as the district champion and Iola as the runner-up.  Girard beat Iola 38-25 on Thursday, while Burlington beat Anderson County, 52-13.

District 4 – All teams still have an opportunity at a playoff spot in District 4, but top-ranked Frontenac and No. 5 Columbus are favorites to win this week and secure the two playoff spots.

                Columbus (7-1; 1-1) at Parsons (1-7; 0-2)

District 5 – District 5 was decided on Thursday night as Wichita Collegiate advanced to the playoffs as the district champion and Nickerson as the runner-up.  Collegiate beat Wichita Trinity 49-20, while Nickerson beat Clearwater, 46-21.

District 6 – Clay Center and Smoky Valley will square off in Lindsborg to decide the District 6 championship. The winner advances to the playoffs and gets a first-round home game, while the loser of this game goes on the road in the first round.

                Chapman (1-7; 0-2) at Rock Creek (1-7; 0-2)

District 7 – Scott City has clinched the District 7 title by virtue of wins over Colby and Goodland the past two weeks.  Colby, meanwhile, will travel to Goodland with the winner advancing to the playoffs as the district runner-up. Concordia has been eliminated.

District 8 – Pratt has already clinched the District 8 championship with dramatic victories over Hugoton and defending-champion Holcomb the past two weeks.  The Greenbacks got a Noah Myers field goal as time expired to top Hugoton 31-28 in Week 7, then ended Holcomb’s 16-game winning streak with a 35-28 victory last week.  Hugoton will travel to Holcomb this week with the winner advancing as the district runner-up.
