New to Kpreps this fall is our most important performance of the week powered by Athletic Strength Institute (ASI).  Each Sunday our experts will hand out helmet stickers to a team or individual that delivered the most important performance of the week in their opinion.

Check out Athletic Strength Institute (ASI) – building better athletes in Lawrence (Kan.) and the surrounding area.  If you mention Kpreps, you will receive a free initial screening and 15% off your initial training package. Check them out online at AthleticSI.com and follow ASI on Twitter @AthleticSI or Facebook

By the way, ASI-trained athlete Trey Moore of Lawrence rushed for 168 yards, three touchdowns, and scored on another short pass out of the backfield on Friday night…so you may want to check ASI out!

Helmet sticker: Atchison's win over perennial power Holton (John Baetz – Kansas Pregame)

After closing the 2015 season with a heartbreaking loss to finish 8-1 and miss a trip to the playoffs, and graduating explosive do-it-all quarterback Wykeen Gill, no one would blame the Redmen for starting 2016 with questions. But it appears those questions were answered when Atchison dispatched state power Holton in Friday's season opener, 24-14. The Redmen scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to break open a 14-14 tie. Adam Smith tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Bryce Enzbrenner, including a 53-yarder to put Atchison on top with 6:20 remaining.

Helmet sticker: Luke Lampe of St Francis (Conor Nicholl – Kpreps)

On a highlight-filled first night, St. Francis held off Wallace County, 22-20. The ability for ranked teams to stay healthy and get key contributions across the roster from injured players, backups and new starters in paramount. For Indians, junior Luke Lampe had battled a shoulder problem throughout the fall. Lampe saw the chiropractor this week and was cleared to play. On Friday night, he recovered a fumble, caught a Hail Mary touchdown pass to end the first half, and scored on a 1-yard run in the second half. St. Francis has plenty of well-known stars, but Lampe came through with a standout performance in Week 1.

Helmet sticker:  Holcomb QB Trey Gilbert (Chet Kuplen -- Sports in Kansas)

Holcomb opened their Class 4A-II state title defense with a new quarterback behind center. Junior Trey Gilbert (6-2, 165) faces the difficult task of following an all-state performer in Trey Teeter.  Teeter passed for more than 2,500 yards and 35 touchdowns during the Longhorns 2015 state title run.  On Friday, Gilbert’s debut was impressive as he completed 10 of 18 passes for 250 yards and seven touchdowns in the Longhorns’ 55-13 thrashing of Cimarron.

Helmet sticker:  Mill Valley Jaguars (Matt Gilmore -- Kpreps)

Mill Valley is the defending Class 5A state champions and ranked No. 3 to begin the 2015 season. But after graduating eight 5A all-state performers from last year’s team, have the Jaguars really cleared the hurdle to become a consistent 5A contender year-in and year-out? If Friday night’s performance is any indication, the answer is an emphatic “YES”! Mill Valley handed fellow Eastern Kansas League newcomer St. James Academy a 35-13 defeat behind a great performance from new quarterback Brody Flaming.  Flaming , replacing three-year starter Logan Koch, passed for 310 yards and five touchdowns in leading the Jaguars to the victory. St. James Academy entered the game ranked No. 4 in Class 5A and is a team many believe has the talent to be a legitimate 5A contender for the first time. Despite returning only three offensive starters and two defensive starters from last year’s team, this win should push the Jags back to the forefront of Class 5A favorites statewide.  The road in the EKL will be tough, but the Jaguars have reloaded!

Athletic Strength Institute (ASI) – DID YOU KNOW?

"The body relies on water to deliver nutrients to working muscles and remove the by-products. Even mild dehydration kills performance.

Throughout the week:

1.    Eat plenty of nutrient dense foods, such as lean proteins, vegetables, and fruits; not just on game day

2.    Avoid prepackaged processed foods and beverages; they have no nutritive value

3.    Drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day

4.    For every pound lost during practice/games, rehydrate with 2 cups of fluid

If your urine is dark and strong smelling you’re already dehydrated. Those with a history of cramping should consider regularly adding salt to foods/beverages after practice/games."
