Class 6A:
Manhattan cruised to a 49-12 win over Topeka Seaman on Friday night. Quarterback Ian Trappran ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 112 yards and a score in the first half as the Indians coasted to a 42-0 halftime lead.
KC Harmon ended a 31-game losing streak with a 30-26 win over Topeka Highland Park on Friday night. The Hawks exploded for a 22-point third quarter to erase a 12-0 halftime deficit. Quarterback Chris Young connected on touchdown passes to Phillip Cowans and Jacarius Williams, while Darelle Alexander rushed for a 27-yard score to round out the Hawks’ third-quarter scoring.
Wichita South improved to 2-0 on the season with a surprising 16-6 win over Wichita Heights. It was South’s first win over Heights since 2009. Quarterback Allen Bishop rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown to lead the Titans.
Wichita Northwest proved their week one win over Bishop Carroll was no fluke after running over Kapaun Mt. Carmel 49-33 on Friday. Quarterback Kevin Folsom threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 123 yards and two more scores. Jahlyl Rounds rushed for 122 yards and two scores, while Antonio Joyner contributed 91 rush yards and a touchdown each rushing and receiving.
Class 5A:
Salina South earned their first win of the season with a 35-14 win over Haysville Campus. The Cougars starting quarterback Jacob Yarochowicz led the offense by completing 15 of 24 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns.
Blue Valley Southwest took advantage of Shawnee Heights turnovers on way to a 41-14 win. The Timberwolves blocked a punt and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown to highlight their defensive play.
Valley Center blocked a potential game-winning Ark City field goal with 38 seconds to preserve a 7-6 win. Â Wyatt Lange scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Hornets in the fourth quarter
Goddard improved to 1-1 on the season with a 28-0 shutout of Clearwater. Blake Sullivan completed 9 of 17 passes for 186 yards for the Lions. Goddard beat the Indians 30-10 in Week 2 last season.
Class 4A-I:
Wellington earned its first win of the season with a 36-26 win over Goddard-Eisenhower. Conner Phelps rushed for 195 yards and scored four Crusader touchdowns, including a 60-yard scamper in the third quarter.
Winfield scored the first 34 points and cruised to a 34-7 win over Rose Hill for the Vikings first victory of the season. Adam Keller and Brett Roark scored two touchdowns each in the win.
The Baldwin Bulldogs improved to 2-0 after a 27-26 win over KC-Piper. Baldwin scored 20 unanswered points to take a 20-6 lead and held on after a Piper touchdown put the Pirates within a point but the 2-point conversion failed to give the Bulldogs the slim margin of victory. Baldwin’s two wins this season have come by a combined three points.
Fort Scott scored 28 points in the first quarter in rolling past Spring Hill, 50-14. Kaleb DeLaTorre rushed for 66 yards and two early touchdowns, and passed for 132 yards and another score for the Tigers. Marcus Stepps caught six passes for 127 yards and a score. Wyatt Tourtillot rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Carter Young added 74 yards and two scores. The play of the night occurred late in the third quarter as Fort Scott’s all-state kicker Brody Southwell connected on a 52-yard field goal.
Class 4A-II:
Running back Sam Schroeder scored three touchdowns as Wichita Trinity overcame two scoring deficits to edge Wichita Independent, 31-27. Independent had the ball in Trinity territory late in the fourth quarter but fumbled; one of four Panther turnovers on the night.
Frontenac and Riverton were deadlocked at 14-14 before Raider quarterback Brandon Mlekus connected with Riley Swigart on a wide-receiver screen for a 75-yard touchdown. Frontenac would tack on two more late scores to win 33-14.
Jefferson West overcame a 14-6 halftime deficit and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:55 to play to beat Wamego 22-14. The Tigers drove 98-yards down the field for their game-winning touchdown.
The Parsons Vikings losing streak stopped at 29 games after a 40-0 blowout victory over Coffeyville on Friday night. Keenan Dodd, the Vikings 260-pound quarterback, racked up 221 total yards, while Isaac McPherson added 137 yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Vikings’ defense held the Golden Tornado scoreless while forcing five total turnovers.
The Haven Wildcats recovered a late fumble and ran out the clock on a 22-14 victory over Hillsboro. The Wildcats and Trojans were tied 8-8 at halftime after Haven’s Thane Unruh’s 6-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter. Unruh added a third-quarter touchdown to give Haven the lead for good.
Class 3A:
The St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers earned their first win of the season with a 46-6 win over Baxter Springs. Colgan’s lead was 7-6 late in the second quarter before quarterback Ryan Cedeno connected on touchdown passes to Sawyer Esch and Garrett Normand to build a 21-6 halftime cushion.
Galena went on the road to Girard and grabbed their second win of the season with a 24-14 road win. The Bulldog defense never let the Trojan offense get on track and forced five consecutive three-and-outs to begin the game.
Cheney came out on top 48-20 over Douglass on Friday night in the Central Plains League. The Cardinals scored four first-half touchdowns to put the game out of reach early.
Garden Plain used three defensive touchdowns to earn a 54-8 road win over Belle Plaine. Peter Bergkamp had an interception return, Zach May had a blocked punt return and Cody Hendryx recovered a fumble.
Pleasant Ridge scored 34 unanswered points and earned their first win of the season, 42-8 over Valley Falls. Senior quarterback Nick Holmes rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 204 yards and a two more touchdowns in the win for the Rams. Brandon Broddle had two catches for 116 yards; both of which went for touchdowns. Broddle rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown, while Jagar Haack added 77 and a score on nine carries.
Class 2-1A:
Mission Valley snapped Lyndon’s long Flint Hills League winning streak with a 26-20 victory on Friday night. Clay Phillips broke a 20-all tie and scored the game wining 60-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
Sacred Heart did not let a Week 1 loss slow them down against Minneapolis. The Knights ran over the Lions in shutout fashion, 30-0. Sacred Heart finished with 401 yards of total offense, 197 of them coming on the ground from Jake Faerber.
Ell-Saline improved to 2-0 on the season with a 28-12 win over Moundridge. Noah Bradley passed for two touchdown and Dakota Came rushed for 119 yards and two more scores for the Cardinals.
Sticking with the Heart of America League, Bennington improved to 2-0 with a 19-8 win over Inman. The Bulldogs held a slim 7-0 lead until the fourth quarter when the pushed across two more scores. Jacob Stanley passed for 117 yards and a scores, while T. J. Ragnoni rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown.
Class 8-Man I
St. Francis overpowered Tribune-Greeley County 64-0 to earn a Northwest Kansas League victory. Taylor Rogers rushed for four touchdowns to lead the Indians, while Justin Pacheco added two scores. St. Francis has not allowed a point in the first two games this season.
Peabody-Burns put up 28 points in the second quarter and 14 points in each of the last two quarters for a 56-18 win over Canton-Galva. Sophomore receiver Dylan Wood had 104 yards receiving and one touchdown for the Eagles in the loss.
Mankato-Rock Hills and Pike Valley matched each other score for score for most of Friday night. Despite being down 28-26 in the fourth, Rock Hills scored the only points in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-0 with a 34-28 win. Spencer Callaway threw for 259 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies.
The Uniontown Eagles shutout Madison in the first half and cruised to a 44-14. The Eagles owned a 30-0 lead at halftime before the teams each scored 14 in the second half.
Class 8-Man II
Danen Kistner filled an impressive stat line as Hartford rolled to a 56-6 win over Waverly. Kistner passed for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 17 of 23 attempts. He also rushed for 160 yards and two more scores. The Jaguars led 12-0 at halftime, but exploded for 44 points in the second half.
Triplains-Brewster rushed for 278 yards and seven touchdowns as in a 74-28 win over Deerfield. The Titans led 14-0 after one quarter and 52-20 at halftime. Ryan Gfeller, Fred Schertz, and Jaden Schmidt each rushed for two touchdowns for Triplains-Brewster.
It was a tale of two halves for the Caldwell Blue Jays on Friday night. Udall owned a 12-6 lead at halftime, but the Blue Jays outscored the Eagles 46-12 in the second half for a 52-24 win. Udall, ranked No. 4 coming in to this game, turned the ball over six times on three interceptions and three fumbles. Â
Otis-Bison cruised to a 54-12 win over St. John on Friday night. Cougar running back Brad Lightfoot rushed for 208 of the teams 288 yards in the win. Quarterback Kade Urba passed for 70 yards and rushed for 60 more for Otis-Bison.
