Class 6A
Lawrence Free State gave Manhattan its second loss in as many weeks with a 35-14 road win. Free State took a 21-7 lead into the half but Manhattan scored first in the third to cut the lead in half at 21-14. The Firebirds defense did not allow another point from that point forward and tacked on another two touchdowns for their 21-point win.
Wichita Northwest earned a spot in the class 6A state playoffs with a 35-14 triumph over Garden City. KeShaun McGaugh rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown to lead the Grizzlies rushing attack while Jahlyl Rounds gained 98 yards with a touchdown of his own.
Olathe Northwest cruised to a 34-7 victory over Olathe East on Friday night. The Ravens held a 20-0 lead at halftime and didn’t allow East to get into the end zone until the fourth quarter. Northwest will face No. 2 ranked Olathe North next Friday in the final week of district play.
Class 5A
Mill Valley earned its first shutout of the season with a 42-0 stomping of Bonner Springs. The Jaguars now have won three-in-a-row behind the legs of Christian Jegen. Jegen scored two touchdowns of the night. Despite starting the season 0-3, Mill Valley is starting to receive votes in the class 5A poll.
Kansas State commit Alex Barnes kept the Pittsburg Purple Dragons playoff hopes alive with a 41-34 win over Blue Valley Southwest. Barnes rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns in the seven-point win. It was a back-and-forth game; the Purple Dragons used its rushing attack while Southwest used its passing attack to keep things close.
Valley Center went on the road and shocked Maize with a 28-14 win. The Hornets and Eagles were locked up at 14-14 before Valley Center’s Isziah Hurtt’s 1-yard run gave the Hornets a 21-14 lead. They sealed the win when Dylan Sheer found Andrew Skaff for a 15-yard touchdown.
Class 4A-I
Things did not start well for Hays High as Abilene’s Hartley Hazlett took the first play of the game 68 yards for a touchdown. But Hays responded with a nine-play, 77- yard drive capped by a three-yard Isaiah Blackmon run. Abilene took a 33-27 lead on another Hazlett touchdown pass. Hays’ next possession proved to be the difference after converting on 4th-and-nine to keep the drive alive, Alex Delton scored from 17 yards out for a 34-33 lead. The Indians’ defense stood stout the last eight minutes of the game to keep their playoff hopes alive heading into the final week of district play.
Fort Scott rolled to a 49-12 win over Labette County on Friday. The Tigers utilized the legs of Brendyn Quinney as the running back scored three touchdowns in the first four possessions of the game. Quinney scored a fourth time in the third quarter as well for a total of four touchdowns on the night.
Ulysses scored the first 21 points of the game but only lead 21-14 at halftime before defeating Rose Hill 42-21 in district play. The Tigers rushed for 421 yards and six touchdowns, 269 of those yards came from Ian Rudzik. Rudzik also scored all six rushing touchdowns in the win.
Class 4A-II
Concordia routed Goodland 45-7 behind 476 yards rushing from the Panther offense. Shea Crum led the attack with 137 yards on the ground and one score, while Drake Hake rushed for 117 yards and four more scores.
The Wamego Red Raiders earned a playoff spot with its 35-14 win over Smoky Valley on Friday night. The Red Raiders came alive in the second quarter when Kyler Alderson connected with Anthony Gamino for the first touchdown of the game. Wyatt Totten then took a Smoky Valley punt 60 yards to the house for another Wamego touchdown.
Wichita Trinity blew by Haven 50-14. The Knights put up 35 points in the second quarter and racked up 354 yards rushing. Tyler Burns rushed 17 times for 219 yards and four touchdowns to lead Trinity to its lopsided win.
Class 3A
Centralia shutout St. Marys in week two of district play. The Panthers earned its third shutout of the season and improved to 7-1 on the season with its only loss coming to No. 2 Rossville. Centralia will meet Rock Creek next week, while St. Mary’s play Nemaha Central.
Hesston scored the first 59 points of the game to go on and win 59-2 over Council Grove. The Swathers remained undefeated behind 208 team rushing yards and five touchdowns. Senior quarterback Grant Raleigh added three touchdown passes, two to Scott Duerksen.
Norton remained undefeated with a 34-16 win over Beloit on Friday night. The Bluejays’ Jordan Dole rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns to lead the rushing attack for Norton. Dole also threw for another 105 yards and two more scores in the win.
Class 2-1A
Meade held a 26-20 lead after its fourth rushing touchdown of the game but Elkhart answered after Tyler Sklenar connected with Izzy Barco for a 20-yard touchdown pass to eventually decide the 27-26 outcome. Elkhart’s Tanner Burnett rushed for 218 yards and a score in the upset win.
Marion rolled Herington 56-8 to improve to 5-3 overall for the season. The Warriors scored six consecutive times after their first two possessions resulted in zero points. Marion will travel to Mission Valley for a Thursday night game that has playoff implications. Both teams are 2-0 and are looking to host a first-round playoff game with a win.
Sedgwick scored 56 first half points to route Medicine Lodge 63-21. The Cardinals scored the first 49 points of the game before Medicine Lodge got on the board. Montana Kane rushed for four touchdowns in the Sedgwick district win.
Class 8-Man I
Ness City cruised by WaKeeney-Trego 52-8. The Eagles scored 36 first half points and shutout Trego in the second half in their blowout victory. Ness City improved to 6-2 on the year and will host Hodgeman County next week.
Peabody-Burns escaped and avoided Burlingame’s comeback attempt by defeating the Bearcats 42-34. Peabody scored the first 28 points of the game before Burlingame cut the deficit to 28-20 before halftime. The Warriors then scored the next 14 points to go up 42-20 after a 50-yard touchdown pass from Braxton Kyle to Kevin Baatrup. Kyle ended with 134 yards and four touchdowns, while teammate Clayton Philpott rushed for 166 yards and one score.
Pratt-Skyline shutout Kinsley 46-0 to earn its seventh win of the season and fourth in a row. Skyline scored all 46 points in the first half behind Daniel Hacker’s 173 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Class 8-Man II
Axtell stomped Blue Valley Randolph 46-0. Colton Buessing scored twice and threw two more touchdowns to lead the Eagles to their sixth win of the season.
Chase remained undefeated with a 46-0 shutout over Tescott. The Kats had a 30-0 lead at halftime and scored 16 more points in the third for the final margin of victory. Chase will host Burrton next week.
Stafford also remained undefeated with its own shutout win of 50-0 over Bucklin. Senior running back Ethan Johnson rushed for 161 of the 272 total rushing yards for the Trojans. Johnson found pay dirt five times in the blowout win as well.
