Class 6A
Greyson Tempel passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Garden City defeated Hutchinson 35-24. It was Garden City’s first win over the Salthawks since 1999. The Buffaloes trailed 10-7 at halftime but rallied to score 28 points in the second half. Garden City’s Jared Koster had 100 yards receiving and Dusty Tempel had 100 yards receiving. Hutchinson quarter Turner Wintz ran for 179 yards.
Topeka High bounced back from its first loss of the season a week earlier against Manhattan to defeat Junction City 21-14. The Trojans rushed for 351 yards with 213 coming from Alec Beatty and 130 coming from Austin Tillman.
Lawrence beat KC Wyandotte 81-42. No, that’s not a type. The Lions scored 81 points. Lawrence quarterback Alan Clothier and running backs Drew Green and J.D. Woods each rushed for more than 100 yards. As a team, Lions ran for 553 yards on 51 carries. Wyandotte quarterback Dimonic McKinzy passed for 436 yards and five touchdowns. He has thrown for 2,182 yards and 24 TDs on the season.
Manhattan improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in its district with a 13-10 win against Washburn Rural on Friday Night Live, the Kansas Cox 22 statewide telecast. Manhattan’s Chris Martin led the Indians with more than 100 yards rushing. Michael Singer led the Junior Blues with 109 yards and a touchdown.
Class 5A
Andover scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and defeated Emporia 28-21. Miles Starks scored on a 93-yard kick return in the third quarter. Quarterback Coen Rasmussen scored a touchdown on the ground and through the air.
KC Schlagle out-gunned Lansing 42-35. Lansing quarterback Krystian Abbott passed for 335 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
Salina Central running back Malik Veal ran for 282 yards, and the Mustangs defeated Great Bend 41-14. Salina Central rushed for more than 400 yards as a team.
Shawnee Heights totaled almost 700 yards of offense in a 70-47 win over Topeka West. Heights’ Tony Barksdale Jr. ran for 233 yards and five touchdowns. Quarterback Taymon Grabauskas passed for 261 yards and five touchdowns. West quarterback Joshua Reynolds passed for about 200 yards with three touchdowns.
Class 4A
Maize South held off the previously unbeaten Hesston Swathers for a 14-6 victory in the Kpreps.com statewide game of the week. Maize South’s Chase Bell ran for about 150 yards. The South defense limited Hesston running back Ryan Schadler to about 100 yards rushing.
Coffeyville jumped out to a 49-13 halftime lead and held on to beat Columbus 68-20. The Golden Tornado handed the Titans their first loss of the season. Coffeyville running back LaDarrius Johnson ran for 170 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries. A.J. Randle caught six balls for 144 yards and a touchdown for Columbus.
Independence, which had only one with through six games, is now 2-0 in districts after defeating Frontenac 21-17. Independence running back Courtlan Hayes led the way with more than 200 yards combined rushing and receiving.
McPherson quarterback Kyler Kinnamon passed for about 100 yards and ran for about 180 as the Bullpups out-lasted Abilene 58-46. Abilene’s Tanner Hoeckman ran for 185 yards.
Class 3A
Galena ran for 451 yards and six touchdowns in a 57-26 win over Southeast-Cherokee. Gabe Helton, Logan Johnson and Drake Mittag each had more than 100 yards rushing for the Bulldogs. Southeast’s Ryan Rakestraw also ran for more than 100 yards.
Sedgwick senior Dalton Brandt ran for 314 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries in a 61-6 win over Leon-Bluestem. Sedgwick quarterback Brylie Ware passed for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns.
After suffering consecutive losses to Columbus and Galena, St. Mary’s-Colgan bounced back with a 50-7 win over Riverton. Drew Dawson led the Panthers’ rushing attack with 128 yards and four touchdowns.
Heath Tucker ran for 219 yards and four touchdowns and Holcomb defeated Lakin 41-26. Lakin quarterback Caleb Seeger passed for 161 yards and a touchdown but also threw two interceptions.
Class 2-1A
After being shut out in four of its first five games, Wabaunsee has won three consecutive games and scored 102 points in that stretch. The Chargers defeated Onaga 39-29. Wabaunsee senior Ethan Miller ran for 318 yards and six touchdowns on 36 carries. Michael Bliss led Onaga with 89 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Olpe jumped out to a 42-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 49-6 win against Chase County. Bo Krueger scored four touchdowns for the Eagles.
Troy quarterback Tristan Speer passed for 167 yards and three touchdowns as the Trojans defeated Leavenworth-Immaculata 43-8. Sophomore Drew Sachen ran for 144 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Northern Heights running back Donovan Read ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-7 win against Herington. Chris McWilliams also caught five passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns for Northern Heights. Herington’s Kyler Ammann caught six balls for 162 yards and a TD.
8-Man Division I
Mankato-Rock Hills edged Wakefield 54-52 in overtime. Devon Freeman ran for 236 yards and three touchdowns for Rock Hills. Quarterback Chanse Copple passed for two TDs and ran for two more.
Spearville outscored South Gray 30-8 in the second half to pull out a 56-22 victory. Spearville quarterback Nathan Stein passed for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns.
Sophomore Armando Gomez ran for 160 yards and four touchdowns and West Elk cruised to a 54-8 win over Hartford. Gomez also had a 30-yard touchdown reception.
Udall cruised to a 52-6 win against Central Burden. Udall quarterback Alex Perez passed for 109 yards and two touchdowns and added more than 70 yards rushing and a touchdown.
8-Man Division II
South Barber scored 40 points in the first quarter and defeated Norwich 62-14. South Barber’s Peyton Yandel passed for 106 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 99 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Taylin Bird directed Fowler to a 52-22 win against Moscow. Bird completed 7 of 18 passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns.
Rolla scored 34 points in the first quarter en route to a 53-8 win against Bucklin. Kyler Telford and Obie Telford rushed for two touchdowns each in the victory.
Argonia-Attica crushed Caldwell 42-14. Quarterback Alec McDaniel completed 9 of 14 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 63 yards. Garrett Wells, Dylan Prescott and Devon Newberry ran for one touchdown each.
