Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Jet Dineen rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns as Lawrence Free State held on for a 21-13 win over Gardner-Edgerton. Dineen also completed six of 12 pass attempts for 94 yards on the night and Dash Cleveland added 83 rush yards and a score for the Firebirds. Dineen has now rushed for 463 yards and seven touchdowns and added 452 yards passing and six more scores for the Firebirds (3-1). Carter Dewey led Gardner-Edgerton with 94 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Jake McClure kicked two field goals and produced nearly 150 yards of total offense.
Olathe West shut out Olathe North until the final minute of the game during their 20-6 upset of the then second-ranked Eagles. The Owl defense limited Olathe North to 180 yards of total offense on the night and forced a pair of turnovers. Lewie McMullen converted on the first of his two field goals in early and Mason McGavran hit Anthony Favrow on a 25-yard touchdown pass to put the Owls up 10-0 after the first quarter. That score remained until the third quarter when Olathe West used a quarterback throwback pass from Jake Scott to McGavran from 15 yards and a 17-0 lead. Olathe North was led by Noah Palmer’s 76 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Palmer also accounted for the Eagles only score when he connected with Michael Canseco in the final minute.
Blue Valley West scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to break open a 13-13 tie and defeat Raytown (Mo.), 27-19. Jaguar quarterback Gage Roach broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run to put West on top, then a couple of minutes later hit Jack Schneider for a short touchdown pass for a 27-13 lead. Raytown later added a score with under three minutes remaining. Roach passed for 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Sage Huffman led the ground game with 103 yards and a score.
Garden City used a pair of 15-play scoring drives to beat Hays, 27-21. The Buffaloes broke a 14-14 lead with a 96-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Wiese to Jerry Arteaga. The Indians would later tie the game on a Roy Moroni TD run. Garden City responded with a 15-play drive that culminated in Colin Kleysteuber’s game-winning 1-yard run. Kleysteuber rushed for 103 yards and two scores to lead Garden City.
Class 5A:
Blue Valley Southwest quarterback Dylan Dunn connected with Hank Phillips on a 12-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter, and the Timberwolves defeated Leavenworth 28-21. Dunn, a sophomore, completed 21 of 26 passes for 287 yards and two TDs. On the season, Dunn has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,066 yards with 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Against Leavenworth, senior Zach Atkins led the receivers with nine catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Emporia earned its first win of the season by beating Topeka Highland Park 42-32. Senior quarterback Cameron Geitz led the Spartans with 205 passing yards and two touchdowns. Junior Derrick Keys had three TDs, rushing for two and catching another. Highland Park quarterback Kellan Spruce passed for 148 yards and a touchdown but three two interceptions. Emporia snapped an eight-game losing streak. Highland Park’s losing streak extended to 60 games.
Senior quarterback Fletcher Pankey rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another as Spring Hill improved to 4-0 with a 54-6 win over Bonner Springs. Pankey passed for 110 yards and rushed for 43. Junior Draven Pipkin led the Broncos on the ground with 103 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Senior Carter Meade added two rushing TDs. Bronner Springs was led by junior Peyton Parks with 108 yards and a TD on 24 carries.
Jarin Sanders ran for five touchdowns as Shawnee Heights blasted KC Schlagle 54-6. Sanders ran for 178 yards on 15 carries. The T-Birds’ others TDs came on a run from Callan Carver and a 61-yard punt return from Jayden Moore. Shawnee Heights snapped a 10-game losing streak. Schlagle has lost its last four dating back to 2019.
Class 4A:
KC Piper built a 23-0 lead after three quarters and then held off Louisburg to a final score of 23-15. Pirate sophomore JJ Jarrett rushed for 102 yards on only 13 carries. Senior Blake Porter completed 3 of 6 passes for 36 yards and a touchdown. Piper is now 3-1 and rebounded from its 25-23 loss to Leavenworth.
Tonganoxie used 14 fourth quarter points to beat Eudora 28-21. Colton Bruvsen led the Chieftains offense with 137 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Bruvsen also caught two passes for 42 yards. Senior Sam Kleidosty added 67 yards and two touchdowns on 12 attempts. Junior linebacker Wyatt Harris led the Tonganoxie defense with 11 tackles.
After dropping its first game of the season to Missouri’s St. Joseph-Lafayette, Atchison is on a three-game winning streak. The Phoenix cruised to a 70-0 win over KC Harmon. Atchison won the game on the ground with 332 yards and seven touchdowns on 20 carries. Junior Jesse Greenly led the way with 125 yards and three TDs on 10 attempts. Trey Carter, Dameon Owens, Chris Bennett, and Sean Noll had one touchdown each. Xazavier Duncan scored on an interception return, and freshman Lance Norris returned a punt for a TD.
Mulvane used an air attack to beat Towanda-Circle 28-14. Wildcat quarterback Mason Ellis, who has committed to North Dakota State, passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns. Hunter Seier was his main target with nine catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Ellis also ran for a score. The Mulvane defense picked off four Circle passes.
Class 3A:
Holcomb scored in each quarter in routing Nickerson 55-0 to begin district play. Longhorn quarterback Kaden Johnson completed 12 of 16 passes for 257 yards and five touchdowns on the night, including three to Levi Knoll. Knoll caught six balls for 171 yards and those three scores. Cooper Henson and Damon Mesa also were on the receiving end of Johnson touchdown passes. The Longhorn defense was equally impressive in holding Nickerson to negative rush yards on 31 attempts.
Concordia senior Keyan Miller rushed for 401 yards and five touchdowns on 16 carries as the Panthers routed Council Grove, 83-8, on Friday. Miller averaged more than 25 yards per carry on a night when the Concordia line paved the way for 625 yards rushing and ten rushing touchdowns. Concordia put up 743 yards of total offense on the night in improving to 4-0. Miller now has rushed for 777 yards and 14 touchdowns in four games this season.
Pratt scored 50 points in the first half in rolling past Larned, 62-27. Greenback sophomore Max Younie rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Enoch Walton added two rushing scores and Carson Hoeme and Johnny Martinez chipped in one each. Hoeme also tossed a 70-yard touchdown pass to J’air Johnson. Pratt has a huge district showdown this week against unbeaten Cheney.
Perry-Lecompton outscored Bishop Ward 14-7 in the second half en route to a 42-35 district win on Friday. Bishop Ward led 21-7 after the first quarter before the Kaws rallied for three touchdowns to tie the game at 28 by halftime. Gunnar Ball passed for 196 yards and five touchdowns to lead Perry-Lecompton. Ball also rushed 32 times for 208 yards and another score. Kael Gorski and Ty Williams each caught two touchdown passes. James Jarrett, III rushed for 103 yards and three scores for Bishop Ward.
Scott City scored three times in the first half and made those scores stand up in a 21-6 victory at Goodland. Lawson Bailey rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Jace Thomas also scored as the Beavers improved to 3-1 on the season. Goodland was led by sophomore quarterback Cole Linton who rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown and passed for 97 more yards. The Cowboys couldn’t overcome four turnovers in the game.
Class 2A:
Cimarron captured its third straight win with a 40-13 victory against Southwestern Heights. Senior quarterback Braxton Harrison completed seven of 16 passes for 197 yards with three touchdowns against zero interceptions. Senior Mason Eskam had 17 carries for 129 yards and two scores. Senior Jordan Smith had four catches for 134 yards and three scores. Cimarron had six players with double-digit tackles, all between 10 and 18: Asher Kahlan Navarro, Alex Seifried, Tanner Bailey, Harrison, Michael Feltman, and Blake Schilling. SW Heights senior Memo Flores continued his nice season with 16 stops along with 27 carries for 148 yards.
Chaparral continues to be one of Kansas’ biggest surprises with coach JC Zahradnik, a former assistant. The Roadrunners beat Bluestem, 53-8. Chaparral is 4-0 this year. Senior Wyatt Drouhard completed 10 of 14 passes for 181 yards with five touchdowns. Junior Austin Clark rushed four times for 93 yards with a TD. Junior Jack Francis caught three passes for 63 yards for a pair of scores.
Hoisington picked up its third straight victory with a 28-13 win versus Phillipsburg. The Cardinals led 14-0 after the first quarter and 20-0 at halftime. Senior Wyatt Wikum completed four of nine passes for 54 yards with zero touchdowns and an interception. He rushed 23 times for 137 yards. Senior Legend Robinson continued his impressive year with 21 carries for 195 yards and three TDs. In the first month, Robinson has 73 carries for 716 yards and nine TDs. He has cleared 100 yards with at least two rushing scores in each contest. Sophomore Tony Moore picked up a pair of tackles for loss.
Class 1A:
Conway Springs beat Ellinwood, 45-13. Conway Springs led 22-0 after the first quarter and 45-0 at halftime. The Cardinals won their third in a row and outgained the Eagles, 356-105. Izic Billups completed six of eight passes for 116 yards with two scores. He rushed eight times for 85 yards and two TDs. Billups also returned a kickoff 31 yards for a score. Lance Pauly caught three passes for 75 yards and two TDs. Defensively, Nathan Berntsen recorded five tackles, two sacks and two TFLs.
Plainville, just outside the top-5 in 1A, moved to 3-1 with a 36-0 win against Ell-Saline. The Cardinals play host to No. 3 Inman this week. Inman is 4-0 and has not allowed a point. Senior Ethan Hamilton completed three of seven passes for 67 yards with two scores. Junior Kyle Werner delivered 13 carries for 89 yards. Overall, the Cardinals rushed 37 times for 248 yards with three rushing scores – from three different players. Senior Anders Dewey lone catch went for a 52-yard score. Senior Brandon Brin delivered 10 tackles, two for loss. Senior Dakota Yost also finished with four tackles, two for loss.
Whitewater-Remington scored in each quarter in pulling away from Sublette for a 34-6 district win. The Broncos improved to 3-1 to start the season for the first times since 2011. Sublette was led by junior Miquel Hernandez who rushed for 123 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Ace Martinez. The Larks fell to 0-3 with the loss and have won just 4 of their past 50 games.
Class 8-man I
In a slight upset, Goessel beat undefeated Argonia-Attica, 44-36. A&A led 6-0 and 36-32. A&A committed five turnovers, including four interceptions. Titan quarterback Xander Newberry completed 11 of 21 passes for 103 yards. He rushed 22 times for 90 yards and three scores. A&A is 3-1, 0-1 in District 5. Goessel moved to 2-2, 1-0.
Medicine Lodge moved to a surprising 4-0 with a 34-30 win versus Moundridge on Thursday night. Player of the game team awards went to all-purpose threat Cauy Scripsick for offense, lineman Harlem Miller on defense and lineman Dylan Holloway for special teams. Medicine Lodge trailed after every quarter: 6-0 after the first, 18-14 at halftime and 24-20 after three quarters. Senior Chance Winter has completed 10 of 15 passes for 172 yards with a touchdown against an interception. Winter has delivered 22 carries for 89 yards and two TDs. Scripsick finished with six catches for 127 yards with a score. Overall, Scripsick delivered 208 total yards along with 18 tackles and a TFL. Miller finished with 11 stops, two for loss. ML is 4-0, 1-0 in District 5.
Flinthills defeated Oxford, 70-68, in triple overtime. The game was tied at 50 entering overtime. Flinthills earned the win on a 10-yard rush from Hunter Lowemaster and a successful two-point conversion. Oxford quarterback Kyan Morris accounted for nine touchdowns, six rushing and three passing, per the Sumner Newscow. Flinthills is 2-2, 1-0 in District 2. Oxford is 0-4, 0-1.
Kinsley beat Kiowa County, 58-8, and moved to 3-1. Peyton Schmidt passed for six touchdowns, two apiece to Levi Taylor, Conner Chamberlain and Xavier Holguin. Alex Garcia paced with five tackles, and Taylor finished with 1.5 TFLs.
Class 8-man II
Caldwell rolled over Hutchinson Central Christian, 58-12, behind another big game from Keiondre Smith. Caldwell led 24-0 after the first quarter. Caldwell is 4-0. Smith completed five of 10 passes for 55 yards with two TDs. He rushed 19 times for 256 yards and three scores, including a 52-yard run. Brody Perkins delivered 14 carries for 110 yards and four TDs. Dawson Bristor and Jackson Risley each tallied receiving scores. Caldwell is 4-0, 3-0 in District 6.
Dighton quietly improved to 3-1 with its second straight win and has a good chance for a winning record this year. The Hornets won at Satanta, 56-6. Dighton struggled with numbers last season and went 1-7 with two forfeit losses and a game cancelled. The Hornets entered this year with seven straight losses. In ’19, Dighton was 1-8 with zero on-field wins and a pair of forfeit losses. Veteran coach Ken Simon, who has twice won Coach of the Year honors, posted a 12-1 mark in ’16 and 9-3 with just nine players in ’18. Against Satanta, Max Neeley completed nine of 15 passes for 118 yards with two touchdowns. He rushed 15 times for 142 yards and three scores. Jaden Coleman delivered 14 carries for 110 yards and a pair of TDs. Last year, Neeley, as a freshman, delivered more than 1,300 yards of total offense and 21 offensive TDs in just seven games. Dighton gets winless Ingalls this week, a team that is moving to six-man next year.
Osborne beat Rock Hills, 50-0, and set up its big matchup with No. 2 Hanover this week. Senior Mason Schurr led a balanced effort with nine rushes for 77 yards and two TDs. He also returned a punt for a score.
6-Man
Top-ranked Ashland registered a 61-12 win over Moscow to remain unbeaten. The Blue Jays were led by sophomore Britt Grigsby who passed for 92 yards and three touchdowns. Kale Harris, Jose Amaya, and Nathan Lynn each rushed for touchdowns for Ashland, while Trae Vera caught two touchdown passes with Andrew Endicott and Amaya catching one each.
Kayden Martinez rushed for 291 yards and six touchdowns as Natoma rolled to a 67-19 victory over Golden Plains. Martinez also completed both of his pass attempts for 47 yards and a score.
Junior Leo Hageman and freshman Lucas Hageman each rushed for a pair of touchdowns as Cunningham routed Burrton, 64-13. Luke McGuire and Rick King also added touchdowns on the ground for the Wildcats and McGuire also hit Lane Halderson on a touchdown pass.
