Tonight, it is really difficult to talk about football.
The Kansas high school football community has been shaken by the passing of Shawnee Mission West wide receiver Andre Maloney on Friday.
Maloney suffered a stroke on the sidelines of the Vikings’ game against Leavenworth on Thursday night moments after catching a 63-yard touchdown pass. He passed away on Friday.
Maloney was an all-state receiver for the Vikings and helped Shawnee Mission West to the Class 6A state championship a year ago. He was considered one of the top ten players in the state and had verbally committed to play at Kansas.
We at Kpreps offer our thoughts and prayers for the Maloney family, Andre’s coaches and teammates, and the entire Shawnee Mission West community.
We hope that all of those players he competed with or against or simply inspired continue to #PlayForDre.

Weather again had a major impact on Friday night’s action. Several games were moved up to try and beat the anticipated storms. At the bottom of this feature, we have compiled a list of games postponed until Saturday and Monday.

Just one week after beating the top-ranked team in the state and taking over as the No.1 ranked team in Class 6A, Lawrence Free State stumbled on the road against Olathe North on Thursday night.
North running back Venus Triplett rushed for 221 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Eagles built their lead to as much as 26-7 after halftime.
Free State quarterback Joe Dineen rushed for a touchdown and tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Khadre Lane with just over a minute to go to pull within 26-19. The Firebirds then recovered the onside kick, but Dineen was intercepted on the following play and Olathe North ran out the clock.

The fans choice for the Kpreps Game of the Week turned into a shootout. Madison, the top-ranked team in 8-Man, Division I, built a 46-14 lead in the second quarter before Chetopa came back. The Green Hornets scored 22 points in the final five minutes of the second quarter to pull within 46-36 at halftime.
The game tightened to 52-44 in the third quarter before Madison scored 32 unanswered points to lead 84-44 before winning 92-56.

Trey Robinson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:03 remaining to lift Columbus to a 32-26 road win at Galena.
The Titans lead Galena nearly the entire game before a Gabe Helton touchdown run put the Bulldogs ahead 26-24 with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
Columbus responded with winning touchdown to remain unbeaten. The Titans will host fellow unbeaten St. Mary’s Colgan next week. Galena dropped to 4-1 on the season.

Blue Valley Northwest earned a second-consecutive upset in the Eastern Kansas League by beating Blue Valley 31-28. The Huskies built leads of 14-0 and 17-7 in the first half before the two teams began to trade touchdowns.
The Tigers took a 28-24 lead with just over six minutes remaining only to see Northwest score on a 65-yard touchdown run for the eventual winning score.

For the second consecutive season, Salina South dominated Hutchinson in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League.
Justin Stonebraker threw three touchdown passes to Zach Nachbar as the Cougars pulled away for a 48-10 victory. Last season, Salina South won 35-10.
Stonebraker accounted for nearly 300 yards of total offense. Mike Jones added 140 yards and two scores on the ground for the Cougars.
Nachbar had well over 100 receiving yards to go with his three scores.

Kiowa County scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to overtake South Central 32-18 in a battle of unbeaten 8-man teams.
The Mavericks picked up the big district win on the strength of their all-state player Trever Powell. Powell rushed for 307 yards and three touchdowns on 45 carries including both touchdowns and two-point conversions in the decisive fourth quarter.

Bishop Carroll survived a scare for the second consecutive week. This time, the Golden Eagles used a big fourth down stop to hold on and beat Wichita Northwest, 12-7.
After two field goals, Carroll carried a 6-0 lead into the fourth quarter before Northwest’s Dylan Brazell recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to put the Grizzlies ahead 7-6.
Carroll responded behind junior quarterback Colton Howell who hit Scott Linnebur on a 30-yard touchdown pass mid-way through the fourth quarter to give the Eagles the 12-7 lead.
Northwest drove to the Carroll 25-yard line late in the game, but was stopped on fourth-and-1.

In what’s becoming our weekly Ryan Schadler update, the Hesston senior back rushed for 289 yards and six touchdowns as the Swathers rallied to beat Kingman 41-27.
Schadler may have been only outdone by Ulysses sophomore Ian Rudzik. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound sophomore carried 26 times for 467 yards and seven touchdowns as the Tigers outscored Goodland, 75-34.
