In our Picks to Click, we feature several players or units from across the state that we feel will have breakout performances on Friday night.
This season, we’ve assembled a team of media members across the state to each select one player (or unit) each week. We will track the cumulative statistics of our selections throughout the season similar to fantasy scoring.
Picks to Click contributors for the 2020 season include: Sean Boston (Southwind Broadcasting); Dion Clisso (PrepsKC.com); Matt Gilmore (Kpreps.com); Alex Hammeke (Kpreps.com), Chet Kuplen (Sports in Kansas); Brent Maycock (Topeka Capital Journal); Conor Nicholl (Kpreps.com); and Mark Schremmer (Kansas Chronicles & Kpreps.com).
Check back next week as we calculate the final standings for the 2020 season and see how the players performed that we picked this week. See the bottom of this article for details.
Landon Boss, QB, Osage City (Kuplen)
Osage City (6-1) has been a nice surprise story to lead Class 2A, District 2 behind the play of Boss who has accounted for 1,181 passing (18 TD) and 752 rushing (7 TD). Boss has been one of the best small- school sophomores in Kansas this season. The Indians take on Humboldt at home on Friday.
Henry Burns, WR, Sedgwick (Gilmore)
Burns (5-10, 160) has been one of the top small-school receivers in the state this season. He’s put together a string of five consecutive 100-yard receiving games for the unbeaten Cardinals. Burns has 39 receptions for 826 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also paces the Cardinal defense with 75 tackles. Burns and the Cardinals will need a big night as they take on fourth-ranked Conway Springs in a game that will decide the District 4 championship.
Adam Callahan, LB, Baldwin (Maycock)
A transfer from Gardner-Edgerton after leading the Trailblazers in tackles last year, Callahan has been a force for the Baldwin defense all season long. In five games, Callahan has racked up 60 solo tackles and 6 assists while also recording 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He had a huge game in last Friday's 23-20 win over Santa Fe Trail that ended Baldwin's 18-game losing streak with 14 solo tackles, 6 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Callahan, who also has run for 544 yards, will look to lead the Bulldogs to their second straight win this week against winless Osawatomie.
Kylan Cunningham, QB, Lakeside-Downs (Boston)
Junior quarterback Kylan Cunningham has led an explosive Lakeside offense that has averaged more than 47 points per game. Cunningham has completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,339 yards and 20 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He’s also rushed for 405 yards and 13 scores. Cunningham and the Knights should be in for a big night in a non-district contest against winless Blue Valley Randolph.
Kade Harris, QB, Thomas More Prep (Nicholl)
Harris has excelled in all three phases for the Monarchs. Coached by his dad Jay Harris, Kade was the primary starting quarterback as a freshman. This year, he has again started under center. TMP has won six in a row and eight of nine dating back to last year. The Monarchs have enjoyed their best season in 18 years. Harris has rushed for 656 yards and passed for 871 with 18 offensive scores accounted for. Last week, Harris threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jace Wentling. He also rushed 26 times for 79 yards.
This week, TMP is at Lakin as the Monarchs look to win their first district title since ’02. Harris will likely have the ball in his hands often Friday.
Josh Sanders, RB, Maize (Hammeke)
After transferring from Wichita Heights, Josh Sanders has played a huge role in the success of the Maize Eagle offense this season. Sanders went over the 1,000-yard mark last week in the Eagles’ 36-35 victory over Derby. He now has 1,070 yards and 17 touchdowns in 136 attempts. Sanders also is a threat on kickoff returns, with three touchdowns and a 23-yard average on 13 returns. Maize travels to Hutchinson in a game that will determine the AVCTL-I crown. The game was also voted on by Kpreps Fans as the statewide Game of the Week.
Isaac Stanton, QB, Basehor-Linwood (Schremmer)
Fresh off a 33-26 win over Lansing in which he passed for 224 yards and four touchdowns, Stanton is enjoying a strong senior season. Stanton has completed 145 of 221 passes for 1,737 yards and 23 touchdowns with five interceptions. During a 61-42 win over Leavenworth earlier this season, he passed for 372 yards and six touchdowns. This week, the Bobcats will be at home against Pittsburg.
Garrett Williams, QB, Paola (Clisso)
Garrett Williams is the leader of the top-ranked Paola Panther offense. The senior quarterback has completed 62 percent of his passes for 645 yards and eight touchdowns. But the Panthers are known for keeping the ball on the ground and Williams has been efficient in rushing for 459 yards and 15 scores. He doesn’t have to carry a heavy load with the likes of Jovanni Blackie and Fletcher Aude joining him in the backfield. Blackie has rushed for a team-high 1,082 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Aude has added 505 yards and four scores. The Panthers will look to keep their unbeaten season alive when they host rival Louisburg.
