Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Garden City used a 31-point first half to cruise past Ulysses, 38-8. Jerry Artega and Josh Janas would score for the Buffaloes on the ground, while quarterback Caleb Wiese would connect with Artega and Colin Kleybuster for touchdown scores. The Garden City defense held the Tiger offense scoreless while only allowing 84 total yards. Ulysses scored off a blocked punt in the endzone.
Shawnee Mission West snapped a three-game losing streak with a 33-14 win over Shawnee Mission North. Mehki Knight passed for 187 yards and three touchdowns – two of which went to Peyton Moore ho had 120 receiving yards. Cris Peterson had 148 yards and a score in the loss. The Viking defense forced North to 0 of 5 on fourth down and 5 of 15 on third down.
Manhattan earned their second straight victory by blanking Topeka West, 49-0. Lorenzo Wilhoite had 166 yards and two touchdowns on twelve carries. Zach Hirschey forced an interception, while Talique Houston recovered a fumble. Manhattan finishes off the regular season versus Emporia. Manhattan currently holds the No. 7 seed in the 6A West bracket.
Olathe West defeated Shawnee Mission South, 35-8. The Owls rushed for 321 yards on the night led by junior Anthony Favrow’s 151 yards and a touchdown. McGavran added 97 yards and two scores on the ground, while Reggie Dennis added 73 yards and a score. Mason McGarvan went 13 of 20 passing for 115 yards.
Class 5A:
Topeka Seaman kept their hold onto the top spot of the 5A East bracket with a decisive 28-0 victory over Topeka High on Thursday. Ried Cowan, Peyton Murray, and Nathan Zeferjahn scored touchdowns, as the Vikings put up 377 yards of total offense. Reid Cowan passed for 252 yards and a score for the Vikings. Camden Barta recovered two fumbles and had an interception, as the Vikings forced four turnovers in the contest.
Goddard-Eisenhower defeated Dodge City 37-30 in a game added early in the week. Eisenhower led 17-14 at halftime, but Dodge City rallied for a 30-24 lead early in the fourth quarter. Nick Hogan delivered the Tigers the lead late in the fourth quarter with a pass to Owen Rush to tie the game, and would then add the game-winning score from 13 yards out. Hogan rushed for 150 yards and pass for 173, scoring two touchdowns in both dimensions.
Pittsburg snapped a two-game losing streak with a 22-9 victory over Atchison. Atchison led 9-7 at half, but Grant Roelfs and Caiden Barber would score to give the Purple Dragons the victory. Xavier Cushinberry ran for 152 yards and the lone Atchison touchdown on 26 carries.
Wichita Heights broke a two-game losing streak with a 51-0 blowout over Wichita South. The Falcons had a strong 372-yard rushing performance in the contest. John Randle matched his season high with three touchdowns and 165 yards on 16 carries. The Falcons led 28-0 going into the locker room, and exploded for 21 points in the third quarter.
Class 4A:
Senior Ryan Andrews rushed for about 120 yards and three touchdowns as Augusta cruised past Abilene 47-0. The Orioles improved to 3-4 and posted their first shutout of the season. The Cowboys, who were playing their first game in nearly a month, dropped to 0-4 on the season and lost their 14 straight game dating back to 2018. The Cowboys have not scored this season.
Senior Ethan Camp scored on a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard-line with 3:07 left to propel Coffeyville to a 27-24 win over Chanute. Camp finished with 209 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Golden Tornado.
The Fort Scott defense stopped Wamego at the 1-yard-line with six seconds left to hold on for a 22-18 victory. Before the goal-line stand, the Tigers took the lead with 6:08 left when quarterback Malachi Vann finished off a 99-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run. Fort Scott improved to 5-0, winning their fourth game by six points or fewer.
Louisburg scored the game’s first 35 points in a 35-7 win over Ottawa. Ben Wiedenmann scored on touchdown runs of 59 and 8 yards. The Wildcats bounced back from a 35-7 loss to Smithville (Mo.) a week earlier. Ottawa lost its fifth straight.
St. James Academy quarterback Dakota Burritt passed for 266 yards and three touchdowns during a 48-0 win over Shawnee Heights. Burritt also ran for 64 yards and a touchdown. Junior Tyler Clairborne was Burritt’s top target with 10 catches for 112 yards and a TD.
Class 3A:
Holcomb moved to 6-1 with a 35-22 win at Pratt. The Longhorns scored all 35 points in the first half in wrapping up the No. 2 seed out of District 8. Quarterback Kaden Johnson passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns – both to Levi Knoll. Knoll caught eight balls for 174 yards. Kolby Johnson added 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Devon Weber led Pratt with 126 yards and two scores, he also threw a touchdown pass to Enoch Walton.
Sutter Conrad scored on a 7-yard run with :51 seconds remaining to lift Osawatomie to a 38-35 win over Bishop Ward. The Trojans rushed for 504 yards in picking up their first victory of the season. Conrad rushed for 151 yards and two scores, while sophomore Seth Carrow rushed for a team-high 180 yards and two scores on 13 attempts. Toby Wilson also broke the 100-yard mark with 135 yards and a touchdown.
Riley County built a 28-3 lead and held off Concordia, 44-23. Nic Allen led the Falcons with 247 rush yards and two scores, while Trey Harmison added 116 yards and three rushing scores. Conner Holle also passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Wyatt Trost rushed for 129 yards and two scores to lead Concordia. Trost also passed for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Marysville won its third consecutive game and moved to 3-0 in district play with a 20-0 shutout of Clay Center. Caden Brinegar rushed for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass from Ayden Price, and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Rader. The Bulldogs will travel to Riley County this week to decide the District 5 title.
Columbus outscored Parsons 19-6 in the second half to defeat the Vikings, 38-20. Junior running back Gabe Martin carried 24 times for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Jaxson Haraughty added 108 yards and a score on the ground and passed for 38 yards. Sophomore Brett Hamilton completed both of his passes for touchdowns covering 53 yards – both went to Haraughty.
Sabetha went on the road to Doniphan-Trumbull (Neb.) and ran past the Cardinals, 41-18. The Blue Jays rushed for 369 yards in the game led by Drew Schmelzle’s 162 yards and 108 yards from sophomore Josh Herrmann.
A week after Halstead running back Lakin Farmer rushed for the second-most single game yards in Kansas history, Wichita Collegiate beat the Dragons, 33-0. Collegiate outscored Halstead, 13-0, in the first quarter, 20-0 at halftime and 26-0 after three quarters. Farmer finished with 22 rushes for 112 yards and had a long TD run called back because of penalty. Wesley Fair completed six of 10 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. Fair had 16 carries for 109 yards and two scores. Jacob Chugg finished with 10 carries for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Collegiate collected four tackles for loss, and Chugg helped on 10 tackles.
Class 2A:
In District 2, Osage City improved to 6-1 with a 42-7 victory against Eureka. The Indians are 4-0 in district play. Osage City led 12-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime. All the points were scored in the first three quarters. Sophomore Landon Boss completed nine of 21 passes for 193 yards with two touchdowns against two interceptions. Junior Brody Littrell finished with 13 carries for 126 yards and a score. Boss also rushed 12 times for 97 yards and a pair of TDs. Senior Gunnar Fort had five catches for 111 yards and a score. Standout lineman Dane Whalen collected seven tackles, four for loss. Osage City is second in 2A with 317 points, while No. 1-ranked Rossville has 405 points. The Indians finished 5-4 in 2019 and scored 147 points.
In District 8, Minneapolis defeated rival Beloit for the first time since 2014. The Lions came back from 19 points and scored 27 straight for a 34-26 victory. Minneapolis was down 26-7 but closed to 26-21 at halftime. Trent Moeckel tossed four touchdowns to Spencer Davidson. Moeckel finished 13 of 19 passing for 254 yards and four passing touchdowns, a rushing score, an interception and 375 all-purpose yards, according to Salina area radio. Davidson recorded eight catches for 172 yards. Davidson continues to lead 2A in receiving yards.
Mission Valley defeated McLouth, 38-0, and feasibly remains alive in District 3 at 5-2, 3-1. No. 1-ranked Rossville is 7-0, 4-0, while No. 3 Silver Lake stands at 4-1, 3-1. Mission Valley junior quarterback Carter Phillips completed three of five passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Seven players combined for 32 carries for 281 yards. Three players caught a pass, and senior John Denman’s reception went for a 56-yard score. Junior Keaton Marcotte had a 26-yard scoring pass. The Vikings have already delivered a two win improvement from ’19.
At Fort Hays’ Lewis Field Stadium, Thomas More Prep-Marian defeated Cimarron, 16-12, and won its sixth straight contest. TMP was down 12-3 and scored on a pair of receiving touchdowns from Jace Wentling. He also kicked a field goal and an extra point and accounted for all of the Monarch points. TMP has enjoyed its best season since ’02. The Monarchs are 6-1 for the first time since ’89, according to the Kansas Football History database. TMP is 4-0 in District 7.
Class 1A:
In District 3, Oakley improved to 5-2 and clinched a winning season with a 40-6 victory versus Sacred Heart. Ethan Abell played in the first three quarters and delivered 22 carries for 275 yards and five touchdowns. He is over 1,100 rushing yards this season.
Elsewhere in District 3, Plainville defeated winless Ellinwood, 35-7. The Cardinals led 22-0 after the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime. Junior Ethan Hamilton completed all three of his passes for 51 yards. Sophomore Kyle Werner delivered seven carries for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Cardinals finished with 13 tackles for loss, including 2.5 for junior Draxtin Hovis. Plainville improved to 3-4.
Wabaunsee defeated Horton, 59-8. The Chargers led 14-0 after the first quarter and 47-0 at halftime. Junior Cade Oliver completed 10 of 15 passes for 224 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. The Chargers also rushed 16 times for 174 yards. Three players: senior Jace Reves, freshman Zach Frank and junior Aiden Boeckman, all rushed for touchdowns. Oliver has completed 85 of 133 passes for 1,441 yards with 14 scores against four interception. In his career, Oliver is now up to 2,855 passing yards with 29 touchdowns.
Class 8-man I
In District 1, Sedan remained perfect at 7-0 and just outside the rankings with a key 60-12 district win versus Cedar Vale-Dexter. Sedan held standout Spartan running back Brogan Myers to three carries for 16 yards. Sedan collectively rushed 32 times for 236 yards and five touchdowns. In the first quarter, Garrett Everett and Blake Stone each delivered 1-yard runs for a 16-0 lead after the first quarter. Everett added a two-yard run in the second quarter. Then, Koda Blankinship returned a fumble 12 yards for a score. In the third, Eli Campbell had a 14-yard run, and Dameion Hatten caught a nine-yard pass from Campbell. In the fourth, Campbell delivered a 69-yard scoop-and-score, and Jeremiah Prince had a 52-yard run.
Also in District 1, Oswego defeated West Elk, 68-22, and improved to 6-1, 3-1 in district play. Senior Lance Teal completed six of nine passes for 127 yards with four touchdowns. Sophomore Jake Hutchinson had nine carries for 159 yards and two scores. As well, senior Isac Elkins finished with three catches for 62 yards and two TDs.
Kinsley shutout St. John, 46-0, in a game that was over at halftime. Isaac Bowman completed a pass for a 17-yard touchdown to Cole Gleason. Conner Chamberlain rushed six times for 91 yards and three scores. Kinsley led 30-0 after the first quarter. Overall, Kinsley ran 17 plays for 197 yards. The Coyotes are 4-3, 2-2 in District 7. Kiowa County, Macksville and Kinsley are all 2-2 in district play. Kinsley is at Macksville this week; a win gives the Coyotes its first winning season since a 5-4 mark in 2010. Kinsley had won just four total games in the previous four years.
In District 7, Ness City beat Meade, 46-0, in a game that ended in the third quarter. Ness City outscored Meade, 20-0, in the first and led 33-0 at half. In a matchup that was likely for a playoff berth, Ness City limited Meade to 52 carries for 129 yards. In the first quarter, Jose Guzman had scoring runs of six, two and 45 yards. In the second, Edwin Rodriguez had a one-yard TD run, and Gavin Schreiber also delivered a one-yard run. In the third, Edwin Rodriguez finished with TD runs of three and six yards. Guzman enjoyed a massive game with 20 carries for 236 yards and three scores. Taylor Cable recorded a big defensive game with 12 tackles, three for loss. Jackson Seib picked off two passes. Both Guzman and Rodriguez, very key players, had missed games earlier this fall. Ness City is 3-3, 2-2 in district play.
Class 8-man II
Colony-Crest beat Southern Coffey County, 50-0, improved to 7-0 and won District 1. Senior Jacquez Coleman finished with five carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Holden Barker delivered seven carries for 37 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Senior Caleb Nolan, Barker and senior Andrew McAdam all tied with seven tackles.
All season, District 4 has presented plenty of wild games and scenarios. However, Osborne (4-3, 4-1) controls its own destiny entering Week 8 against Pike Valley. The Bulldogs suffered huge graduation losses for coach Steve Tiernan after it won the state title last fall but won by forfeit over Southern Cloud last week. Beloit-St. John’s-Tipton (5-2, 4-1) lost to Osborne, 56-42, back in Week 2.
Beloit St. John’s-Tipton changed up the district with a 59-34 win versus Lakeside-Downs – the only district team to defeat Osborne. Lakeside led 14-7 after the first quarter before BSJT scored 28 unanswered in the second quarter. BSJT quarterback Jaret Eitzmann completed six of 11 passes for 112 yards with a score against two interceptions. He rushed 12 times for 63 yards with a touchdown. Senior Brayden Perez finished with 15 carries for 153 yards and four TDs, and senior Blake Perez had eight rushes for 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Perezes combined for six catches for 112 yards with a TD. Brayden led the defense with 16 tackles. He is up to 104 carries for 801 yards and 17 scores. This marks the ninth straight winning season for the Blujays.
Triplains-Brewster defeated Logan-Palco, 50-48, and has clinched a winning season at 5-2. The Titans led 8-0 after the first quarter, 28-22 at halftime, and 44-34 after three quarters. The Titans rushed 35 times for 323 yards. Junior Daxton Latham delivered 15 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown. Junior Cayde Welsh had eight rushes for 99 yards and a pair of TDs. Senior Ryan Hause finished with 12 carries for 118 yards and three scores. This marks the second straight winning season for the Titans. Triplains-Brewster is 14-11 in the last three years after an 0-9 season.
Caldwell beat South Barber, 42-14, behind a big day from Trey Strnad and a strong defensive effort. Caldwell, without key players, had lost two in a row after a 4-0 start. Caldwell limited the Chieftains’ junior quarterback Gatlin Jewell to 6 of 13 passing for 54 yards with two touchdowns against one interception. The Bluejay defense held South Barber to 32 carries for 102 yards. Strnad finished with 16 carries for 132 and a touchdown.
