6-Man Football Playoffs
North-No. 3 Golden Plains (6-3) at North-No. 1 Cheylin (8-0) – Cheylin (Gilmore)
Three of the four remaining teams in the 6-Man semifinals are from North Division including top-seed Cheylin and third-place finisher Golden Plains. Golden Plains, Weskan, and Natoma all finished with identical 2-2 division records, but Weskan got the No. 2 playoff spot and Golden Plains the No. 3 spot based on divisional points margin. Golden Plains lost at home to Cheylin 71-61, back in Week 4. In that game, Golden Plains rushed for 485 yards as a team and lost to an outstanding all-around performance from Cheylin’s Colton McCarty. McCarty rushed 41 times for 442 yards and six touchdowns, and passed for 269 yards and three mores scores. Harley Weese was also impressive for Golden Plains – rushing for 378 yards and six touchdowns of his own.
Last week, Golden Plains advanced to the semifinals with a 60-8 win over Pawnee Heights. Roberto Loya rushed for 139 yards and two scores for the Bulldogs. Harley Weese scored a rushing touchdown, had two touchdown catches, and returned one of his three interceptions for a score. Weese has rushed for 1,338 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. For unbeaten Cheylin, McCarty has rushed for 1,752 yards and 33 touchdowns, while also passing for 872 more yards and 16 scores. Andrew Schields and Tyler Sabatka have each tallied more than 400 receiving yards with 16 combined touchdowns. For his career, McCarty has already rushed for 4,143 yards and 72 touchdowns with 2,546 passing yards and 51 more scores.
North-No. 2 Weskan (6-3) at South-No. 1 Moscow (8-0) – Moscow (Gilmore)
The second semifinal features a rematch of one of the better 6-man games during the regular season. Back in Week 3, Moscow traveled to Weskan and ended the Coyotes 8-game win streak with a 30-27 victory. The Wildcats did so by holding Weskan scoreless in the second half until the game’s final play. Moscow’s Adan Granillo scored four touchdowns for the Wildcats, while Austin Snyder was big on both sides of the ball, including hauling in an interception on a tipped pass at the 3-yard line with a little more than minute to go.
In just its second season of 6-Man football, Moscow cruised to the South Division title with an unbeaten regular season. The Wildcats (8-0) average 48.9 points per game while allowing only 19.9 per contest. Snyder is one of 6-Man’s most physical player. He’s averaged around the 1,000-yard rushing mark in each of his last three seasons and enters the playoffs with 928 yards and 20 total touchdowns. Snyder is also a standout defensive player with six interceptions and seven fumble recoveries. Moscow compliments Snyder’s physical play in the backfield with the speed of Adan Granillo. Granillo has more than 650 rushing yards on the season with 12 total touchdowns. Last week, Weskan slipped by Ashland, 58-54, to advance to the 6-Man semifinals. The Coyotes have won the 6-Man state title in two of the three seasons of the association and taken third place the other year. Weskan is now 7-1 in the 6-Man playoffs in the last three season.
Kansas Christian Athletic Association (KCAA)
No. 4 Manhattan Eagles (4-4) at No. 1 Wichita Homeschool (7-0) – Wichita Homeschool (Gilmore)
The Manhattan Eagles will travel to take on the Wichita Homeschool Warriors for the second time this season, but this one is for a chance to play in the Kansas Christian Athletic Association title game. Manhattan defeated Veritas Christian, 34-18, last week to advance to the semifinal round against the top-seeded Warriors.
The Eagles improved to 5-4 on the season, but have a steep hill to climb if they want to unseat the Warriors who defeated Manhattan-Flint Hills Christian 64-6 during the regular season. In that game, the Warriors scored 40 points in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Will Day passed for 301 yards and seven touchdowns in the game and added 76 yards rushing and two more scores.
Day has passed for 1,674 yards and 37 touchdowns against only one interception. He also leads the ground attack with 335 yards and six scores. Carson Emmot is Day’s leading receiver with 26 catches for 674 yards and 16 touchdowns, while Kip Ammons has 449 yards (10 TD) and Luke Johnson has 424 yards (7 TD). The Warriors completed another unbeaten regular season in dominating fashion. Wichita Homeschool has scored more than 61 points per game this season while giving up only eight points per contest.
No. 3 Cair Paravel (3-4) at No. 2 St. Mary’s Academy (5-1) – St. Mary’s (Gilmore)
Cair Paravel and St. Mary’s Academy each had a bye to the semifinal round as due to some league realignment. Sunrise Christian Academy left the KCAA last season and recently approved members, Wichita Life Prep Academy and KC East Christian, will not be postseason eligible until next year.
St. Mary’s Academy finished the regular a season with only a 54-6 loss to Wichita Homeschool. The Crusaders have won four straight games since that loss back in mid-September. The Crusaders have averaged 41 points per game while surrendering 26 per game. St. Mary’s will face Cair Paravel in the state semifinals next week. The Crusaders beat Cair Paravel 50-21 back on October 4th.
Cair Paravel has won two consecutive games since a 1-4 start to the season. The Lions have wins over Veritas Christian and the Manhattan Eagles in consecutive weeks. The Lions have averaged 38 points per game this season while giving up 43 points per contest. Cair Paravel will face St. Mary’s Academy in the state semifinals next week. The Lions lost to St. Mary’s 50-21 back on October 4th.
