Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Dodge City handed Liberal its first loss of the season with a 33-14 decision on Friday. The Red Demons were led by senior quarterback Alan Flores’ 316 passing yards, including touchdowns to Cooper Speer and Jayden Amaro. Amaro had six receptions for 129 yards, while Speer had three catches for 109 yards. Dylan Sonday and Bryson Unzueta each added rushing scores for Dodge City. Liberal’s Xavier Porras rushed for a game-high 111 yards on 23 carries.

After falling behind early, Shawnee Mission Northwest scored 56 consecutive points in rolling past Shawnee Mission West, 56-6. The Cougars scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and two more in the third. The Shawnee Mission Northwest defense held the Vikings to 94 yards of total offense a limited them to a single touchdown pass from Steven King to Markus Bollinger.

Shawnee Mission East held off Olathe North to secure a 39-34 victory. The Lancers rushed for 423 yards in the victory. Junior Jack Reeves rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, while Nate Phillips added 134 yards and two scores on just eight attempts. Reeves also completed 3 of 4 passes for 52 yards including a touchdown to Chris Beikmann.

Blue Valley West improved to 3-1 with a 34-28 win over Blue Valley North. The Jaguars led 21-0 in the first half before Blue Valley North came storming back. The Mustangs tied the game at 28 with a little less than four minutes remaining. Bleu Valley West then scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:17 remaining in the game. West quarterback Tate Nagy passed for 174 yards and two touchdowns and added 86 yards on the ground and another score. Wayne Carter led the Jaguars with 137 rushing yards and a touchdown.


Class 5A:

Basehor-Linwood won the battle of unbeatens in the United Kansas Conference in besting De Soto, 21-7. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime after the Bobcats answered a De Soto touchdown with a scoring pass from Carson Dixon to Nash Morrison. Basehor-Linwood took the lead on a third-quarter interception return for a touchdown by Jacob Sharp. In the final 1:20, Dixon hit Austin Adair on a long touchdown pass to give the Bobcats a two-score lead. Dixon passed for 151 yards on the night. Jayden Lang scored the only De Soto touchdown.

Hutchinson blanked Salina South, 47-0, for the Salthawks’ third consecutive shutout. Senior Kade Smith rushed for 319 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries for the Salthawks. Hutch rushed for 469 yards in the win. Jeremyah Gaitho-Karanu added a pair of rushing scores for the Salthawks.

Leavenworth outscored Shawnee Heights, 34-27, to even its record at 2-2. The difference in the game was the Pioneers ability to convert scoring opportunities into touchdowns, while the Thunderbirds had to settle for a pair of Camden Granado field goals. Leavenworth led 14-10 at the half and 27-24 after three quarters. Aiden Scott passed for 241 yards and a score for Shawnee Heights, while David Wakes added 140 yards on the ground.

Pittsburg picked up a quality road-win over rival Fort Scott, 23-14. Senior Stone Peery led the Purple Dragons with 151 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Carsen Nickelson added 71 yards and a score on the ground while passing for 43 more yards. Fort Scott fell to 3-1 on the season.

Topeka Seaman rolled to a 49-0 win over KC Turner. Quarterback Max Huston passed for 276 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding a rushing score. Bryer Finley caught five passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns for the Vikings.

KC Washington scored in each quarter in blanking KC Central (Mo.), 60-0. Savion Stone completed 14 of 15 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats. Stone also rushed for 102 yards and two scores. Darreon Baskin caught five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, while Cam’ron Fields added 81 receiving yards and a score on six catches.   

Hays High rushed for nearly 300 yards in beating Garden City, 41-8. The Indians scored twice in the second quarter on touchdowns by Ian McGuire and Holden Lind. Hays would add four touchdowns in the third quarter as McGuire rushed for a touchdown and caught one of two Carter Graham touchdown passes in the quarter. McGuire led the Indians with 166 yards on the ground, while Lind added 92 yards.


Class 4A:

Atchison scored 35 points in the second quarter in beating KC Schlagle, 49-8. Jaden Carter and Ayden Rebant each rushed for two touchdowns for the Phoenix. Rebant rushed for a team-high 88 yards on 14 attempts. added a pair of rushing scores. Kolton Bonnel also threw a touchdown pass to Eric Smith, III. Schlagle’s lone score came on an Aaron Johnson touchdown run.

Lansing cruised past Topeka West, 63-0. Reid Oakley passed for 215 yards and four touchdowns for the Lions. A.J. Allen caught five passes for 120 yards and three scores. Tanner Kell and Kieron Broadway each caught touchdown passes for Lansing. Jaxon Pollard added 121 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Lions.

Dusty Bannister passed for 253 yards and four touchdowns as Wellington raced past Labette County, 43-6. Bannister connected with Carter Burnett five times for 122 yards and three touchdowns. He also tosses a touchdown pass to Grady Norris who caught two passes for 75 yards. Jamaal Jackson led the Grizzlies with 94 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

Tonganoxie scored 28 points in the first half and held off Paola, 42-28. The Chieftains rushed for 300 yards as a team with five rushing scores. Tanner Hand led Tonganoxie with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Talon Langford added 102 yards and three score on the ground. Langford also added 102 yards through the air with a touchdown pass to Jacob Morenz.


Class 3A:

Scott City scored 43 points in the first half in beating Ulysses, 57-8. The Beavers took advantage of four Ulysses turnovers in the game. Scott City held Ulysses to 22 attempts for negative 11 net rushing yards. Scott City improved to 3-1 and will host Hugoton this week.

Iola scored in each quarter in holding off Anderson County, 25-18. The Mustangs got a huge performance from junior Tre Wilson. Wilson rushed 17 times for 257 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Iola has won three of four games to start the season for the first time since 2013.

After leading 35-34 at halftime, Prairie View shut out Burlington 15-0 in the second half to preserve a 50-34 victory. The Buffaloes kept things on the ground with 494 rushing yards and seven rushing scores. Parker Schwarz rushed for 324 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries. Josh Goodwin added 126 yards and two scores on 23 attempts. Burlington was led by quarterback Chance Hegg who passed for 259 yards and three scores. Brody Anderson caught seven for 140 yards and two scores, while Eli Ervin added six catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Columbus opened district play with a 49-16 win over Neodesha. The Titans led 28-10 at halftime and broke the game open with a 21-point third quarter. Jack Vilela passed for 195 yards and three touchdowns – one each to Jett Tanner, Jace Midgett, and Brandon Stice. Tanner, Vilela, and Syler Schuburger each rushed for touchdowns for Columbus.

Hesston stayed unbeaten with a 53-6 victory over Nickerson. Sophomore quarterback Jerick Humphreys passed for 173 yards and three touchdowns – one each to Asher Deutschendorf, Daxon Deering, and Blake Hansen. Karter Gonzalez added 136 yards on the ground with four touchdowns.  


Class 2A:

Lakin outscored Cimarron, 38-20, thanks to 400 yards on the ground. The Broncs were led by seniors Ross Rider and Colter Oldham. Rider rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Oldham added 154 yards and two scores. Armando Salcido also added 62 yards and a score for the Broncs. Trace Kooper led Cimarron with 142 rushing yards and a score.     

Ellsworth got another big performance from senior Landin Johnson in beating Lyons, 48-7.  Johnson rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries to push his season total to 935 yards with 13 touchdowns. Tucker Goss added a pair of rushing scores to go along with 72 yards on the ground.

Haven shut out Douglass, 37-0, to improve to 4-0. Quarterback Nash Wray passed for 168 yards and a touchdown and added 87 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Vance Loop rushed for 111 yards for the Wildcats with a score, while freshman Cole Brawner also reached the end zone.

Humboldt beat Eureka, 56-12, in a match-up of a pair of 3-0 teams. The Cubs scored 40 points in the first half and racked up more than 300 yards on the ground. Blake Ellis led Humboldt with 108 yards and a touchdown, while Mason Sterling added 100 yards on nine carries. Logan Page led the way with a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Cubs. Laken Valentine scored both Eureka touchdowns on rushing scores.

Central Heights edged Leon-Bluestem, 14-6, to even its record at 2-2. Sophomore Armoni Velez rushed for 103 yards and both Viking touchdowns on 12 carries. Central Heights rushed for 213 yards in the game. Bluestem was led by Colten Neal’s 93 rush yards with a touchdown.   

Hillsboro shut out Halstead 27-0 to improve to 2-2 on the season. The Trojans took advantage of five Dragon turnovers in the win. The Trojan defense limited Halstead to 3 of 18 passing. The game was scoreless until the third quarter when Hillsboro scored 21 points.


Class 1A:

Mission Valley defeated Cair Paravel, 46-22. Senior Colin Clay rushed nine times for 153 yards, including a 69-yard scoring run, with a score. Sophomore Darrell Garza (four carries, 31 yards) and senior Porter Deters (nine rushes, 80 yards) each rushed for two touchdowns.

Onaga stopped a two-game losing streak and evened its record at 2-2 with a 38-6 win over Valley Falls. The Buffs scored 24 points in the second quarter to pull away. Jackson Kolterman rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns, while Joshua Daniels added 143 yards and two scores on the ground. Valley Falls scored on a touchdown run by Trenten VanHoutan.

Sterling handed Ellinwood its first loss of the season in high-scoring, 41-35, decision. Junior Zane Farney rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Wyatt Newberry added another rushing score for the Black Bears. Logan Isaac hit Boston Ekart on a touchdown pass for Sterling. Landon Simpson rushed for 133 yards and two scores and Drake Hosman added 121 yards and two scores for Ellinwood. The Eagles scored on the game’s final play.

Republic County got its first win of the season by beating Bennington, 18-14. Junior Kash Henke rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore Nickolas Kendall added a touchdown on the ground.


Class 8-man I

Oberlin-Decatur Co. defeated St. Francis, 32-14, in a matchup of two improved Northwest Kansas League teams. Sophomore quarterback Josiah Pattangall paced Oberlin with 24 carries for 210 yards and three scores. He also completed three of four passes for 64 yards with a touchdown. Oberlin outgained St. Francis, 368-316. Junior Lucas Raile had 15 of 37 passing for 224 yards with a score against an interception. Both teams are 3-1. Pattangall ranks third with 797 rushing yards.

Atwood-Rawlins County senior running back Ryan Sramek led Eight-Man, Division I in rushing yards last year. He again paces the classification with 917 rushing yards. Atwood defeated Hill City, 48-28, last Friday behind another massive game from Sramek. He delivered 30 carries for 316 yards and five scores. Sramek completed three of three passes for 47 yards with a touchdown. Hill City senior Dayton Stephen finished with 24 touches for 138 yards and three scores.

Central Plains defeated Solomon, 52-6. Brody Crites passed for 150-plus yards and two scores for the Oilers. Eli Hurley also had a 17-yard touchdown run and tallied another seven-yard rushing score, per Russell radio. Central Plains held Solomon to one yard.

Kinsley defeated Elkhart, 42-6, behind a big game from its breakout freshman quarterback Joshua Stuckey, a heralded player in the younger ranks. He completed six of eight passes for 67 yards and two scores. He rushed 21 times for 118 yards and three scores. Sophomore Woodrow Lancaster delivered 20 carries for 80 yards.

Ellis defeated La Crosse, 53-8. Freshman Trenton Schartz completed seven of 16 passing for 77 yards with two touchdowns against one interception. He finished with 11 carries for 43 yards and two TDs. Junior Carson Schartz had 13 carries for 108 yards and two scores.


Class 8-man II

Sylvan-Lucas Unified defeated Mankato-Rock Hills, 60-12. Sylvan-Lucas held Rock Hills standout senior running back Isaiah Ridgeway to 11 carries for 25 yards.

Osborne rolled over winless Beloit St. John’s-Tipton, 54-0. Osborne had 27 rushes for 209 yards as seven different had a rushing attempt. Senior Dalton Garman passed for a touchdown. The Bulldogs recovered four fumbles, including two from senior Gage Seifried.

Macksville won its third straight game and improved to 3-1 after a 26-14 road win against Stafford. The Mustangs finished with 179 yards, while Stafford posted 208. Macksville senior Orion Guevera rushed for three touchdowns.

Bucklin improved to 4-0 with a 60-14 win against Deerfield and improved to 4-0. The Red Aces continued their big turnaround from last season. Senior Lucas Kirk posted 10 of 17 passing for 174 yards with three scores against one interception. He had nine rushes for 39 yards and a score. Senior Aiden Haskell posted eight rushes for 64 yards and three scores. Bucklin held Deerfield to 54 plays for 194 yards.


6-Man

In a contest of teams just outside the top-five, Peabody-Burns beat Pawnee Heights, 58-20. Pawnee Heights’ key player, Jimmy Gardner, transferred to nearby Larned late in the offseason. Peabody-Burns, which returned all of its key skill players, had another big game for sophomore Aiden Hurst. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 220 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Seven players had at least two carries and finished with 190 rushing yards and 5.4 yards per carry. Sophomore Jameson Miles finished with six catches for 140 yards and three scores, along with a rushing TD. The Warriors recovered four fumbles and an interception.

Cheylin beat Northern Valley, 32-14. Cheylin outgained Northern Valley, 341-274. The Cougars completed nine of 19 passes for 162 yards. Northern Valley had 15 of 30 passes for 109 yards. The game was scoreless after the first quarter, while Cheylin took a 7-6 halftime lead. Cheylin outgained the Huskies, 13-8, in the third quarter and 12-0 in the fourth. Gavin Thalheim led Northern Valley with 112 rushing yards. Cheylin broke some long runs as the game progressed.

Golden Plains defeated Triplains-Brewster, 68-6. Junior Dylan Wark posted four rushes for 127 yards, all for touchdowns. Golden Plains finished with 19 plays, six for touchdowns.

Non-KSHSAA

Reno County Homeschool outscored Marmaton Valley, 84-76, in a wild high-scoring game. Marmaton Valley built a 38-8 lead in the second quarter and led 58-40 at halftime. Reno County took its first lead, 68-66, midway through the fourth quarter. The Sabres scored the game-winning touchdowns on a Bo Smith pass to Brecken Guthrie with :33 seconds left. Marmaton Valley drove to the Sabres’ 10-yard line as time expired.

Smith passed for 530 yards and eight touchdowns, while adding 138 rush yards. Guthrie had 13 catches for 242 yards and four touchdowns, and added 101 yards and three scores on the ground. Bruce Kingsley and Jett Smith each had more than 100 receiving yards with 166 and 107 yards, respectively. Marmaton Valley was led by Brayden Lawson’s five rushing touchdowns to go along with 143 rushing yards. Lawson also passed for 214 yards and three scores. Cooper Scharff added 145 yards on the ground and three scores, while Jaedon Granere had a pair of touchdown catches.
