Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Maize picked up its second win of the season by routing previously unbeaten Maize South, 55-30, in Friday’s rivalry matchup. Eagle quarterback Brayden Myovela passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns and added 98 yards on the ground and two more scores. Shannon Jones and Elijah Cross each broke the 100-yard mark with 115 and 101 yards, respectively. Cross scored twice, while Jones added a rushing score. Bryson Hayes caught seven passes for 119 yards, while Conner Fuhrman and Pearce George caught touchdown passes.  

Lawrence scored in each quarter in defeating Olathe East, 42-28. Junior back Tahj Edwards carried 32 times for 188 yards and three scores, while Banks Bowen added 58 yards and two touchdowns. Bowen also passed for 103 yards. The Lion defense contributed a score as Jah’ir Johnson returned an interception for a score.  

Olathe Northwest narrowly defeated Olathe North, 27-26. The Ravens improved to 4-2 on the season and dropped the Eagles to 1-5. Junior Jaelen Douglas rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries for Northwest. Quarterback Brody Comfort passed for 219 yards, including a touchdown to Mason Schlittenhard who tallied 152 receiving yards.

Wichita South improved to 4-2 with a 55-42 win over Wichita Heights. The Titans and Falcons were tied 7-7 at halftime before combining for 83 points in the second half. South outscored Heights 28-20 in the third quarter and 20-5 in the fourth quarter. Lucas Meyer led Heights with 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns. South will take on Wichita Northwest in a key Wichita City League game this week.

Shawnee Mission East improved to 4-2 with a 40-7 win over Shawnee Mission West. The Lancers scored in each quarter in claiming the win. Nine Lancers combined for 361 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Henry Nelson led the way with 110 yards and two scores, while Jack Reeves added two scores. Reeves and Vince Kopp also threw touchdown passes. West scored on a Mason VonFeldt 58-yard touchdown run.


Class 5A:

Basehor-Linwood scored three touchdowns in the first quarter in cruising past Tonganoxie, 44-6. Bobcat junior quarterback Carson Dixon completed 21 of 30 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Dixon connected with Nash Morrison seven times for 138 yards and two scores. He also threw a touchdown pass to Austin Adair. Roman Miller caught five passes for 103 yards. Dixon, Nick Doering, and Jeremiah Buie each scored rushing touchdowns.

Andover evened its record at 3-3 with a 40-13 win over Newton. The Trojans took control with 20 points in the first quarter. Andover did not complete a pass, instead rushing for 467 yards and six touchdowns. Noah Noyes rushed for 155 yards and a score and Quincy Jonas rushed for 111 yards and a score. Barrett Hill added 75 yards on the ground with two scores on three carries.

Hutchinson scored 35 points in the first quarter in blanking Haysville Campus, 50-0. Jeremyah Gaitho-Karanu scored two touchdowns on the ground, while Max Harris led the Salthawks with 64 yards rushing and a score. Levi Kepler completed both of his passes for 78 yards – both going for touchdowns to Taishaun Govain and Mitchell Rice.

Savion Stone passed for 309 yards and four touchdowns as KC Washington rolled to a 46-0 shutout of KC Wyandotte. Stone threw two touchdown passes to Cam’ron Fields and one each to Nick Carter and Shon Williams. Stone also added a touchdown run. Roman Couch carried seven times for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Spring Hill scored in each quarter in defeating Paola, 42-7. Landon Alexander rushed for four touchdowns on the night, while Hank Kotchavar added a pair of rushing scores. Spring Hill is now 5-1 on the season and will be favored this week against Emporia before closing out the regular season with a Frontier League showdown at Louisburg.

Topeka Seaman outscored Shawnee Heights, 59-34, behind a huge rushing night. The Vikings rushed for 406 yards as a team – led by Kaden McKinney’s 217-yard, two-touchdown performance. Quarterback Max Huston added 168 yards and three scores on the ground along with passing for 210 yards and two scores. Bryer Finley caught 10 passes for 199 yards and two scores. Shawnee Heights quarterback Aiden Scott passed for 357 yards and five touchdowns, including two each to Tyren Parker and A.J. Gallegos.


Class 4A:

Towanda-Circle outscored Rose Hill 29-20 in the second half to win a shootout, 50-48. Thunderbird senior Westin Rose rushed 25 times for 245 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Mason Stobart added 148 yards passing and two scores – one each to Dominic Sawyer and Bodie Janzen.

Atchison shut out Topeka Highland Park in the second to pull away for a 62-21 win in a game pairing the two top teams in the Meadowlark Conference. Atchison led 40-21 at halftime and outscored the Scots 22-0 in the second half. The Phoenix travel to Parsons this week and can then wrap up an undefeated conference title with a win over KC Wyandotte.

Labette County slipped by Coffeyville, 13-7, to improve to 3-3 on the season. Jamaal Jackson continued his strong season with 175 yards rushing and a touchdown. Aaron Wyrick added 100 yards passing with a touchdown that went to Kegan Bates.  


Class 3A:

Pratt picked up a quality non-district win at Phillipsburg, 49-20. The Greenbacks led 26-8 at halftime and put up 23 more points in the third quarter. Junior Cresten Pore passed for 262 yards and two scores for the Greenbacks. Pore connected with Arley Morell five times for 117 yards and a touchdown. Taye Wilson rushed for 102 yards and three scores.

Columbus moved to 5-1 with a 36-0 shutout of Riverton in a non-district game. Titan quarterback Jack Vilela passed for 133 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Vilela threw two touchdown passes to Jayden Rodriguez and one each to Syler Schuburger and Rece Ponce. Jett Tanner added 164 yards rushing for Columbus.

Hesston rolled past Wichita Trinity, 55-14, to remain unbeaten on the season. The Swathers rushed for more than 370 yards on the night led by senior Karter Gonzalez’s 232-yard, five-touchdown performance. Jerick Humphreys passed for 134 yards including two connections for 91 yards to Asher Deutschendorf.  Trinity’s Zac Zimmerman passed for 366 yards and two scores. Zimmerman hit Braden Roberts seven times for 178 yards and both touchdowns.

Wellsville scored in each quarter in cruising past Bishop Ward, 47-6. Junior Armond Graves rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns for the Eagles. Sophomore Pete Dorsey passed for 151 yards and a score and added a rushing touchdown.  

Clay Center used a strong defensive effort in shutting out Concordia, 28-0. The Tiger held the Panthers to 120 yards of total offense on 50 offensive plays. For Clay Center, Eisaac Girton rushed for 151 yards and two scores, while Weston Hammond added a rushing score. Hammond also returned an interception for a touchdown.

Goodland improved to 4-2 with a 40-7 win over Colby. Cowboy quarterback Zach Thorson passed for 304 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Linkon Cure caught five passes for 76 yards and three touchdowns. Kacen Sederstrom and Jaxson Miller each had 88 receiving yards for Goodland. Chayton Goodwin rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown for the Cowboys.

Perry-Lecompton scored in each quarter in defeating Jefferson West, 43-14. Quarterback Garrett Metcalfe threw two touchdown passes and added a rushing score for the Kaws. Bronzen Rush caught a touchdown pass and added a rushing score.


Class 2A:

Halstead knocked Ellsworth from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 31-13 decision. The Dragons led 21-13 at halftime and shut out Ellsworth in the second half. Braxton Creed passed for 137 yards and two scores and added a rushing touchdown. Joey Millspaugh caught a touchdown pass and rushed for a score. Landin Johnson led Ellsworth with 190 yards on the ground on 32 attempts.

Hoisington won its second game of the season and moved to 2-0 in district play by outscoring Lakin, 48-31. The Cardinals led 20-17 at halftime, but used a 22-8 third quarter to get some separation from the Broncs. Hoisington intercepted three Lakin passes. Lakin quarterback Dru Patterson threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns – all three to Timothy Johnson.  

Council Grove scored 50 first-half points in routing Central Heights, 58-0. Ace Monihen rushed ten times for 200 yards and four touchdowns for the Braves. Luke Stewart passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns – one each to Cade Goodell and Mason Samuels. Goodell also added a rushing score. The Brave defense held Central Heights to negative three yards of total offense.

Haven scored six first-half touchdowns in rolling past Belle Plaine, 49-7. Quarterback Nash Wray passed for 197 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing score to go along with 62 yards on the ground. Wray threw two touchdown passes to Aiden Hoopes who caught five passes for 135 yards. Brogan Wray also caught a touchdown pass and Vance Loop caught had a receiving and rushing score to go along with 101 yards rushing.

Humboldt got another huge night from senior Blake Ellis in rolling past Leon-Bluestem, 50-0. Ellis passed for 198 yards and two touchdowns and added 84 yards on the ground with four scores. Mason Sterling and Cole Mathes each added rushing and receiving touchdowns for the Cubs.

Larned rushed for nearly 300 yards in defeating Southwestern Heights, 14-7. David Colglazier rushed for 151 yards and Jimmy Gardner added 128 yards with each scoring touchdowns for the Indians. Manny Mendoza threw a touchdown pass to Isaac Amerin for the Mustangs.

Caney Valley improved to 4-2 and clinched a playoff spot with a 53-7 win over Fredonia. Logan Burnett and Traxcyn Garton each rushed for two touchdowns for Caney Valley. The Bullpups have won two straight district games and have the CNC League teams remaining on their schedule. The Bullpups will travel to Galena this week before closing out the regular season at home with Riverton.


Class 1A:

Hutchinson Trinity held off Ellinwood, 26-15, to pick up a key district win. The Celtics limited the Ellinwood offense to just two rushing scores by Landon Simpson and Drake Hosman. Ellinwood entered this contest averaging 45.6 points per game. Hutchinson Trinity has now won three of its past four games and have improved to 2-1 in district play.

St. Mary’s Colgan went on the road and defeated Jayhawk-Linn, 42-14. The Panthers led 35-6 at halftime thanks to touchdowns in all phases of the game. Anthony Schremmer returned a punt for a touchdown and Brady Badart returned an interception for a score. Noah Duncan led Colgan with 93 yards rushing and two scores. Schremmer also scored on a touchdown reception from Carston Simmons.  

Thomas More Prep rallied for 22 points in the fourth quarter to top Oakley, 28-20. Junior Carson Liles rushed for two scores and threw a touchdown pass for the Monarchs. Liles passed for 182 yards and connected with Jacob Seib on the touchdown. Caden Dinkel also returned an interception for a touchdown for TMP. Carson Beal rushed for 132 yards and two scores and Jorgan Schiltz added 123 yards and a touchdown for Oakley.

Riverside held off Troy, 14-12, to pick up a key District 4 victory. The Cyclones scored on a touchdown pass from Beckam Griffin to Ty’Zell Harrington and a short Elijah Moore touchdown run. Troy scored mid-way through the fourth quarter on a Gannon Bowe touchdown pass to Jackson Hartman, but the two-point conversion failed.


Class 8-man I

Ellis defeated Quinter, 57-12. Ellis led 13-12 after the first quarter and scored 44 points in the second quarter. Freshman Trenton Schartz posted nine of 14 passing for 210 yards with four scores. Junior Carson Schartz rushed nine times for 72 yards and a score. Ellis ran 31 plays for 376 yards. Ellis is 4-2 and is a win away from its first winning season since 2015.

WaKeeney-Trego dominated Ness City, 60-0. Trego ran 19 offensive plays and scored six touchdowns. Junior Cass Smith rushed for three scores. He tacked on 10 tackles, two behind junior Aaron Samson’s team-best 12. The Golden Eagles posted two non-offensive scores. Samson had a receiving TD and returned a fumble for a score. Junior Ashton Wynn returned a punt for a score.

Oxford outscored Kiowa County, 84-58, to win a wild contest in District 5. The Wildcats rushed for 325 yards on the night led by Johnathan Schroeder’s 188-yard, five-touchdown performance. Cordell Jordan added 133 yards rushing and a touchdown for Oxford. Schroeder also passed for 155 yards and three scores – one to Jordan and two to Hunter Plummer.

Atwood-Rawlins County won the Yoke Bowl by defeating rival St. Francis, 50-12. Senior Ryan Sramek rushed 33 times for 315 yards and five touchdown on the night. The Buffs also got 131 yards and two scores on the ground from Dorian Culwell. Lucas Raile accounted for both Sainty scores on a rushing touchdown and a touchdown pass to Ethan Graham.

Oswego exploded for 40 points in the second quarter in rolling past Northeast-Arma, 62-6. Freshman Demitri Williamson scored touchdowns on both of his rushing attempts covering 50 yards and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Alex Long. Williamson also returned a punt and a touchdown for touchdowns. Senior Josh Hutchinson rushed three times for 95 yards and a score for Oswego.

Kinsley built a 22-8 halftime lead and held off Meade, 30-14. Freshman quarterback Joshua Stuckey passed for 74 yards and a touchdown and added 172 yards rushing with a score. Emilio Rodriguez and Woodrow Lancaster each added rushing scores.


Class 8-man II

Dighton remained unbeaten and a strong Division II contender with a 54-6 win over Wheatland-Grinnell. George VonLeonrod rushed for 120 yards and two scores for the Hornets. Daniel Cramer passed for two scores and rushed for 96 yards and two more touchdowns.

Hutchinson Central Christian scored in each quarter in beating Argonia-Attica, 28-12. Nathan Reed passed for 176 yards and two scores and added a rushing score for Central Christian. Carson Vineyard returned a kickoff for a touchdown and tossed a touchdown pass to Mac Harnden for A&A.

Rural Vista outscored Lebo 32-8 in the second half to defeat the Wolves, 40-24. The Heat rushed for more than 300 yards in the game and did not complete a pass. Logan Tate rushed for 161 yards and four touchdowns and Kole Riedy added 89 yards and a score.

Bucklin remained unbeaten with a 56-6 win over Ashland. Lucas Kirk threw three touchdown passes and added two rushing scores for the Red Aces. Kirk accounted for 189 yards of total offense on the night. Aiden Haskell also rushed for two scores, while Nick Feikert caught two touchdown passes.

Marmaton Valley rolled to a 46-0 win over Waverly. Brayden Lawson passed for 164 yards and three touchdowns – two to Jaedon Granere and one to Tyler Lord. Lawson and Granere each added rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Thunder Ridge picked up its first win of the season by doubling-up Beloit St. John’s-Tipton, 44-22. Freshman Tate Foreman passed for 178 yards and two touchdowns and added 173 yards rushing with three touchdowns. Jimmy Escobar added 127 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Ryder Allen scored two touchdowns for St. John’s-Tipton with Tyson Gates contributing the other score.

Hodgeman County improved to 6-0, 3-0 in District 6 with a 46-0 win against Macksville. Sophomore Ian Reece posted 14 of 20 passing for 197 yards with three scores. Reece has 20 carries for 72 yards and three scores. Hodgeman County held Macksville to 11 rushes for 37 yards.


6-Man

Pawnee Heights defeated Moscow, 66-20, for a second consecutive win. Clayton Hammeke rushed for 287 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 65 yards and two more scores. Freshman Cody Holste scored two rushing touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass.

Altoona-Midway improved to 3-2 with a 62-46 district win over Chetopa. The Jets were led by William Stackhouse who passed for three touchdowns and added three touchdowns on the ground. Stackhouse passed for 156 yards and rushed for 134 more yards. Joey Lamendola added two rushing scores for Altoona-Midway. Kage Beck caught five passes for 151 yards and three scores. Chetopa defeated Altoona-Midway, 50-25, to open the season.
