Top-ranked Free State survives turnovers to rally past Olathe East
Lawrence Free State rallied from 18 points down in the second half to top Olathe East 38-31 and remain unbeaten on the season. Free State’s Jax Dineen rushed 18 times for 293 yards and four touchdowns as the Firebirds rushed for more than 450 yards in the game.
The Firebirds overcame four, first-half turnovers in addition to two more drives that stalled on downs. Olathe East scored three consecutive touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 21-7 lead. The Hawks lead increased to 28-10 in the third quarter on a Hunter Thomas touchdown pass to TyJuan Lewis.
That’s when Dineen began to carry the Firebirds to victory. His 13-yard touchdown pulled Free State within 28-17 after three quarters.
Olathe East added field goal to begin the fourth quarter, but a minute later Dineen’s 72-yard run closed the gap to 31-24. Free State finally pulled even on a Gage Foster touchdown run with 5:34 remaining.
After an Olathe East turnover, Dineen scored from 8 yards out with 4:28 left to provide Free State the winning score.
Andale shuts down No. 3 Buhler, 17-6
Andale remained unbeaten on the season with a 17-6 win over No. 3 Buhler. The Indians held a 14-6 lead at halftime and added a 33-yard Seth Bugner field goal in the second half to take a two-score lead.
The Indian defense slowed Buhler back Dalton Brown to 90 rush yards on 24 attempts. Buhler went to the air with Ben Epp, but he was intercepted three times by the Andale secondary.
After Buhler took a 6-0 in the second quarter, Sawyer Simon broke a 59-yard run to put Andale on top 7-6. Late in the half, Andrew Mohr added to the Indian lead with a 10-yard run. Andale led 14-6 for all of the third quarter until Bugner’s field goal to start the fourth.
Simon led Andale with 107 yards on 17 attempts.
Nemaha Central wins battle of unbeatens, 21-7 over Sabetha
Nemaha Central won the battle of unbeatens in Class 3A, District 1 by defeating Sabetha 21-7 to improve to 7-0. It was the ninth consecutive regular season victory for Nemaha Central/Nemaha Valley over Sabetha, although the Bluejays won a 2014 playoff meeting.
Mitchell Henry scored all three touchdowns – one each in the first, second, and third quarters to propel the Thunder to the win. The victory also gives Nemaha Central sole possession of first place in the Big 7 Conference title race with games against Hiawatha (2-5) and Riverside (2-5) remaining.
Conway Springs controls Garden Plain 26-6
Conway Springs scored single touchdowns in all four quarters to methodically move past rival Garden Plain, 26-6.
The Cardinals led 20-0 after three quarters until Garden Plain would get on the board on the first play of the fourth quarter on a Matt Pauly touchdown pass to Drew Wilson.
Conway would answer with an 80-yard touchdown burst from Trenton Jones less than a minutes later to cool any aspirations of a Garden Plain comeback.
Jones carried 22 times for 263 yards and three scores as Conway Springs churned out 375 of its 420 total yards on the ground. The Cardinal defense limited Garden Plain to 191 yards of total offense including 111 rushing yards on 52 attempts.
Jackson Heights holds off Valley Heights in Game of the Week
Jackson Heights improved to 7-0 by holding off Valley Heights, 44-40, in a wild game that featured more than 780 combined rush yards. The game was voted on by Kpreps fans as their choice for statewide Game of the Week.
The Cobras led 28-20 at halftime after Valley Heights ran out of time while driving inside the Jackson Heights 20-yard line late in the first half. That open trip and a pair of lost fumbles proved to be the difference as Jackson Heights opened up a two-score lead after halftime only to see the Mustangs try and catch up.
Cooper Williams’ touchdown run in the third quarter pushed the Cobras lead to 36-20, but Valley Heights would respond with touchdowns from Jordan Yungeberg and Cole Coggins to pull within 36-34 heading to the fourth quarter.
Jackson Heights then answered with a Brady Holliday touchdown in the fourth quarter to regain a 44-34 lead. Valley Heights would score with under two minutes remaining, but the Mustangs were unable to recover the onside kick.
Bishop Carroll uses short field to pull away from Wichita Heights
Bishop Carroll clinched at least as share of the Wichita City League title with a 35-14 victory over Wichita Heights. The third-ranked Eagles and fourth-ranked Falcons were tied 7-7 at halftime before Carroll pulled away thanks to a 28-point third quarter.
The Carroll defense intercepted Heights quarterback K’Vonte Baker setting up the Eagle offense inside the Falcon 10-yard line. Zachary Roth added his second touchdown one play later to put the Eagles up 14-7.
A short punt by Heights set up Carroll touchdown and a 21-7 lead. A Heights fumble on the next possession gave the Eagles the ball back inside the Heights 5-yard line and Carroll scored on the next play
Wichita Heights played without Baker for most of the second half due to an injury.
Campus shuts down Hutchinson, 35-7
Haysville Campus put a damper on senior night at Hutchinson as the Colts rolled the Salthawks 35-7. The victory was the first for the Colts over Hutch in 18 years.
Campus quarterback Federico Harvey was unstoppable on Friday night. Harvey completed 15 of 21 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns.
The Colts led 21-7 at halftime and immediately turned a Hutch fumble into another score early in the third quarter. The Salthawks lost four fumbles in the game.
Campus improves to 4-3 with the victory. The four wins in a season is the Colt’s most in a season since finishing 5-4 in 2006.
Garden City retains the Hatchet, 40-9
The Hatchet will remain in Garden City for another year as the Buffaloes topped rival Dodge City 40-9.
Garden City held a slim 6-3 lead at halftime, but Quinton LaPointe scored three of his four touchdowns in the second half as the Buffs pulled away with 33 consecutive points.
LaPointe led the Buffs with 179 rushing yards to go along with those four scores.
Spearville controls 8-Man unbeaten battle with Satanta
Spearville scored the game’s first 38 points in taking control of a key 8M-I, District 7 contest with Satanta. Both teams entered Friday night unbeaten at 6-0 on the season.
Alex Fisher scored four touchdowns to lead Spearville to the big victory. Fisher rushed for three scores and returned an interception for a fourth touchdown. Bailey Sites and Kolby Stein each contributed two scores for the Royal Lancers.
Spearville led 22-0 after one quarter and 38-0 before Satanta got on the board on a Houston Friend touchdown pass to Wyatt Wade late in the second quarter. Friend threw two touchdown passes with the other going to Gab Salas.
Osborne holds off Victoria, 36-30
Defending champion Osborne held off Victoria 36-30 thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown and defensive stop.
Sophomore Darrian Holloway scored all five touchdowns to lead Osborne to victory. Holloway caught a long touchdown pass from his brother Darnell and rushed for two scores to give Osborne a 22-6 lead in the first half.
Victoria scored late in the second quarter on a Cooper Pfanenstiel touchdown run to pull within 22-14 at the break. The Knights would tie the game at 22 mid-way through the third quarter only to see Holloway answer right back with a touchdown run to go up 30-22.
Again, Victoria would answer as Cooper Windholz would hit Cole Schmidtberger on a touchdown to tie the game at 30-30.
But again, Osborne and the younger Holloway would answer. Darrien mishandled a pitch, but picked up and reversed field to score the go-ahead points with four minutes left. Victoria’s final drive would stall on downs in Osborne territory and the Bulldogs would successfully run out the clock.
Holloway rushed for 138 yards and four touchdowns in the game to go along with 59 receiving yards and a score.
Mill Valley snaps three-game skid with win over Blue Valley North
Mill Valley held on to top Blue Valley North 35-30 on Thursday night to end the Jaguars three-game losing streak.
The Jaguars built a 21-10 halftime lead after a pair of Brody Flaming touchdown runs in the second quarter. The lead expanded to 28-10 after halftime, but the Mustangs quickly answered to pull within 28-17.
Blue Valley North would score again to pull within 28-23 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mill Valley’s Logan Talley scored to push the lead back to 35-23 and North added another touchdown with 3:30 remaining to pull within 35-30.
The victory helps the Jaguars get back to 3-4 on the season and likely will result in the two-time defending 5A champs drawing a seed in the middle of the pack on the east side of Class 5A.
Junction City wins exhibition game against Olathe West
Junction City has some difficulty filling in a Week 7 opponent on the schedule after beating Missouri’s Gateway STEM last season.
On Friday, the Blue Jays defeated Olathe West, 56-22, in what was the Owls inaugural varsity football game.
Olathe West isn’t set to begin varsity action until the 2018 season and thus Kpreps is told that the game’s result will not impact Junction City’s overall record.
Kapaun rallies to win at St. James Academy in OT
Kapaun Mount Carmel overcame a 13-0 halftime deficit to claim a 28-27, overtime road victory over Class 5A’s No. 5 St. James Academy Thunder.
St. James won at Kapaun 28-17 last season. The Crusaders and Thunder are scheduled to continue this match-up the next two seasons.
