Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Blue Valley Northwest rallied from a 14-point deficit to earn a 35-28 victory and keep Gardner-Edgerton winless. The Huskies were led by quarterback, who completed 25 of 39 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Gardner-Edgerton led 28-14, but Blue Valley Northwest scored the game’s final 21 points.
Blue Valley junior quarterback Walker Kinney completed 6 of 13 passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns during a 38-10 win over Blue Valley Southwest. Senior Blake Brown caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tigers’ receiving corps.
Dodge City held off Hays 12-7 in a game that was delayed more than two hours because of lightning. Hays led 7-6 in the fourth quarter, but the Red Demons returned an Indians’ fumble for the game-winning touchdown. Quarterback Beau Foster connected with John Johnson on a 20-yard pass for the Red Demons’ other touchdown.
Hutchinson rushed for nearly 300 yards during a 49-14 win over Salina South. Joesiah Galindo paces the Salthawks with 90 yards, while Brody Smith added 74. Tayezhan Crough added a pair of touchdown runs.
Class 5A:
Shawnee Heights claimed a share of the Centennial League title with a 27-14 win over Topeka Hayden. The T-Birds scored in each quarter and shut down the Hayden run game. Shawnee Heights held the Wildcats to 88 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Meanwhile, Heights rushed for nearly 240 yards in the game led by Mitchell Lady (107 yards) and Trey Jenkins (100 yards).
Maize improved to 5-1 with a 36-26 victory over Haysville Campus. Dalyn Johnson rushed for 133 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Eagles in the win. Maize rushed for more than 250 yards in beating the Colts. A 10-0 first quarter proved to be the difference as the Colts and Eagles each scored 26 points over the final three quarters.
KC Schlagle remained unbeaten with a 54-7 victory over KC Sumner Academy. The Stallions led 26-0 at halftime and scored 21 points in the third quarter. Ivan Webb rushed for 283 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 25 attempts. Webb pushed his season total to 1,928 yards and 21 touchdowns in just six games. Webb, the state’s leading rusher, is averaging 321 yards per game on the ground.
Topeka West picked up its first win of the season by defeating Topeka Highland Park, 43-26. The Chargers used a balanced offense in rushing for 232 yards and passing for more than 200 more yards. Quarterback Hunter McDaniel passed for 208 yards and rushed for 93 more yards with a hand in four Charger touchdowns. Clifton Holloman led West on the ground with 150 yards and a touchdown while adding a TD reception with 74 receiving yards. Highland Park rushed for 342 yards led by Will White’s 298 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Class 4A-I:
Andale maintained its undefeated record with a 35-7 victory over Wichita Collegiate. The Indians jumped out to a 21-0 lead. On the season, Andale has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 238-48. The Indians will face their toughest opponent this week when they meet third-ranked Buhler.
KC Piper improved to 3-3 with a 58-0 win over Bishop Ward. It was the Pirates’ third consecutive victory after starting the season with an 0-3 record. Piper junior quarterback Dalton White passed for 114 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown. Bishop Ward’s losing streak increased to 35 games. The skid started in 2013 when Piper beat the Cyclones 49-14.
Labette County improved to 5-1 with a 31-17 win over Frontenac. Senior running back T.J. Mayhue led Labette County with 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Quarterback Easton Dean rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Dean also passed for 104 yards. The Grizzlies’ only loss this season came to undefeated Andale in Week 2.
Tonganoxie maintained its undefeated record with an easy 41-8 victory over KC Turner. Senior running back Dalton Bock led the way, rushing for 244 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Korbin Riedel added 107 rushing yards as the Chieftains rushed for 369 yards as a team. Quarterback Mason Beach passed for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Class 4A-II:
Wichita Trinity Academy got a huge performance from quarterback Sam Hardin as part of the Knight’s 63-32 win over Belle Plaine. Hardin completed 13 of 26 passes for 195 yards and threw six touchdowns passes. Hardin connected with Caden Williams and Hillard Cozine for three touchdowns each. Hardin also rushed for 122 yards and another score, while Andrew Nordberg added 131 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Baxter Springs picked up its fourth win of the season as the Lions cruised past Northeast-Arma, 71-12. The Lions scored 55 points in the second quarter to take control. Narciso Ortiz led Baxter Springs with 121 yards on the ground and accounted for two touchdowns. The Lions now enter a challenging district that includes Columbus (5-1), Frontenac (3-3) and a winless Parsons team that averages 24 points per game.
Peyton Lane rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns as Clay Center beat Abilene, 48-6. The Tigers rushed for 272 yards in the game and did not complete a pass. Senior Caleb Mendum added 92 yards rushing and two more scores for Clay Center. The victory was the first for the Tigers over Abilene since 2012.
Hugoton evened its record at 3-3 with a 34-0 shutout of Southwestern Heights in a game shortened to the first half due to weather. The Eagles held Southwestern Heights to minus 12 yards of total offense. Quarterback Manuel Mendoza completed 2 of 3 passes for 70 yards with both going for touchdowns. Dawson Kerbow and Bradan Slemp each caught touchdowns, while Kerbow also rushed for two scores and 72 yards.
Class 3A:
In a game that briefly started Friday and then ended Saturday, Russell held off winless Republic County, 28-26, in a NCAA contest. The game was scoreless when play halted at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter. Once resumed, Republic County scored on an 80-yard run from McKenzie Cromwell. Then, Russell, known for defensive touchdowns all season, had a 42-yard pick-six from Cole Schroeder. Russell led 21-18 at halftime after a 50-yard TD run from Austin Price and an 18-yard trick play scoring pass. In the first half, Russell was 3 on 3 on extra points, while Republic County was 0 of 3. In the fourth quarter, Russell pushed its lead to 10 points on a 98-yard drive. Price had 23 carries for 185 yards.
Cimarron held off Elkhart, 30-6, in a game that ended early because of the weather. Bluejay freshman Tate Seabolt had two rushing touchdowns and Josh Seabolt added another score. Senior Jaylen Pickle tacked on a score. The 4-2 Bluejays will play host to Lakin to open Class 3A district play. The game will also be for the Hi-Plains League title.
Norton moved to 5-1 with a 35-6 home win against Colby. The Eagles dropped its second straight game after a 4-2 start. Colby scored first, and then Ryan Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score. Jace Ruder rushed for touchdowns from nine and 72 yards.
The weather caused Thomas More Prep to lose a home game date. TMP and Hays High both share a field with Fort Hays, which had its Homecoming for Saturday. The game was moved to Saturday because of the weather and had to be played at Oakley. TMP won 46-0. Gavin Schumacher opened the scoring with a one-yard run midway through the first quarter. Luke Ruder added a 27-yard scoring run and David McFarland had a passing score for a 19-0 lead. TMP led 26-0 at halftime and tallied 20 third-quarter points.
Syracuse beat Sublette, 35-0, in a weather-shortened contest that was called at halftime because of lightning. Payson Hawkins had 14 carries for 108 yards and two scores. Junior Edgar Gonzalez tallied four carries for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Class 2-1A:
Plainville defeated Sacred Heart, 50-0, in a game that started Friday and finished Saturday because of the weather. The game was played Friday in Salina and then finished Saturday at Russell. The Cardinals won their third straight game after a 0-3 start. Plainville led 21-0 before the delay.
Olpe rolled over Yates Center, 61-0, and improved to 4-2. Camden Hoelting recorded a pick-six on the game’s first drive. Then, Blaine Hinrichs had a 55-yard touchdown run. Seven Eagles scored.
Centralia defeated Washington County, 50-0. The Panthers (4-2) have a total margin of 192-55 and rank third in the classification with just 9.2 points permitted. The Panthers led 15-0 after the first quarter. Trenton Flentie opened the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass. He added a 79-yard run for the second touchdown. In the second quarter, he bumped the lead to 21-0 on a 3-yard run. Later, he passed for a 10-yard touchdown and ran a kickoff back 79 yards for a score.
Moundridge rolled to a district win over rival Inman, 44-8. The Wildcats were led by Jerod Kaufman who rushed for 288 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Inman led 8-6 after the first quarter, but the Wildcats broke the game open with 24 points in the second quarter. Daniel Kaufman also rushed for a pair of scores for Moundridge.
Class 8-man I
Macksville improved to 4-2 with a 46-0 shutout of Kiowa County. The Mustangs scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters before ending the game in the third quarter. Senior Jacob Rein led Macksville with 178 rushing yards and three scores on just 12 attempts. Rein also passed for a 54-yard touchdown. Kody Mead passed for 60 yards and two scores and added 74 rush yards and a touchdown. Kreed Parr caught three passes for 99 yards with all three going for Mustang touchdowns.
After an 0-4 start, Oberlin-Decatur Community won its second straight contest with a 34-16 win against WaKeeney-Trego. Quarterback Kole Breth rushed for three touchdowns of 13, 1 and 70 yards.
Marmaton Valley, which earned a surprise win against Sedan in Week 5, is pushing for a playoff spot out of competitive District 1 that also includes West Elk (6-0) and St. Paul (5-1). The Wildcats improved to 5-1 after a 46-6 victory against Madison. The Wildcats limited Madison to just 62 yards. Marmaton Valley led 8-0 after the first quarter and then scored 22 points in the second quarter.
Lebo, a playoff team last fall, earned its first win of the season with a 54-8 road victory versus Chetopa. Brian Reese rushed for touchdowns of 38, 54, and 34 yards in the first quarter and had a 25-yard score in the second quarter. He ran 10 times for 189 yards.
Class 8-man II
Sylvan-Lucas Unified remained perfect with a 46-6 win against Lakeside-Downs that was called with 2:44 left in the second quarter because of lightning. Beau Batchman recovered a fumble and an interception for Sylvan-Lucas. The Mustangs led 8-6 early before scoring 38 unanswered points. Up 16-6, Sylvan-Lucas quickly scored twice off a Lakeside fumble that led to a five-yard run from Owen Krueger. Then, the Mustangs blocked a punt, recovered at the three-yard line and scored again. Two more Lakeside turnovers led to scores. Overall, the Mustangs outgained Lakeside, 206-90 and forced five turnovers. Krueger and R.J. Haberer combined for three TDs.
Dighton held off Sharon Springs-Wallace County, 20-8, and set up a huge road contest with Otis-Bison this week. The Hornets remained undefeated this season. Dighton had single touchdowns in the first, second and third quarter before Wallace County tallied a score in the fourth. Blair Hoffman threw three touchdown passes, two to David Cramer and one to Isaac Torson. The game had a 45-minute weather delay.
Northern Valley scored 46 points in the first quarter and defeated Wilson, 68-0, in game that ended at halftime. Senior Caden Kinderknecht completed 2 of 3 passes for 46 yards with two scores. He rushed 10 times for 143 yards and four touchdowns. Northern Valley, which plays host to Sylvan-Lucas in a key district contest, has posted shutouts in three of its last four games. Against the same schedule last season, the Husky defense held just one team under 40 points. It is the first shutouts in a non-forfeiture for Northern Valley since a 54-0 win against Weskan in Week 6 of the 2008 season.
Altoona-Midway won its second game of the season with a 40-36 victory over Marais des Cygnes Valley. Jet quarterback Dawson Ashmore passed for 130 yards and two touchdowns to Caden Carter and Dayton Marsh. Clement Huffman added 80 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns. Trailing by four, MdCV drove deep into Altoona territory late in the game, but could not score. Altoona-Midway has won two games in a season for the first time since 2007.
6-Man
Cheylin improved to 4-2 with a 40-0 win over Western Plains. The Cougars kept things on the ground in running just six offensive plays and scoring four touchdowns. Mannual Castillo carried four times for 113 yards and three scores, while freshman Colton McCarty added two carries for 20 yards and a score.
Pawnee Heights clinched the 6-Man regular season title with a 47-0 victory over Wheatland-Grinnell. The Tigers have a two-game lead in the standings on Cheylin, Golden Plains, and Weskan with only one game left in the regular season. Pawnee Heights will host Fowler this week.
