Around the Classes - Week 5 recap
Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Olathe North improved to 2-3 and ended a three-game skid by nipping Lawrence 33-28. The Eagles won the game on the ground as they ran for 394 yards as a team. Freshman Arland Bruce IV rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Daymonn Sanchez ran for 106 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
Garden City improved to 5-0 by holding off Liberal 28-27. But it wasn’t easy. The game was tied 21-21 at halftime, and Garden City sophomore Carlos Acosta had to block Liberal’s extra-point kick with 5:23 left to get the victory. Buffaloes quarterback Garret Doll passed for 226 yards and three touchdowns. David Arteaga caught four passes for 103 yards, including TD receptions of 52 and 25 yards.
Olathe East junior quarterback Hunter Thomas was extremely efficient, completing 15 of 18 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns during a 42-14 win over Shawnee Mission South. Thomas has passed for 834 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. In the win over Shawnee Mission South, senior Will Scofield was the big-play threat with three catches for 167 yards. Trevon Kearney added 98 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Dodge City snapped a two-game losing streak with a 61-6 win over Wichita South. The Red Demons jumped out to a 32-0 halftime and then continued to cruise. Sophomore quarterback Beau Foster ran for three touchdowns.
Topeka High topped previously unbeaten Shawnee Heights 48-14 in a Centennial League battle. A week earlier, Topeka High dropped its first game of the season in a 21-14 loss to Manhattan. In the win over the T-Birds, the Trojans produced 502 yards of offense. Sophomore running back Ky Thomas ran for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Less than two full seasons into his career, Thomas has already surpassed 2,000 yards rushing.
Class 5A:
Blue Valley Southwest quarterback Will Eldridge put on a show during a 52-27 win over Blue Valley Northwest. The junior completed 30 of 40 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He added 42 yards and two touchdowns on nine rushing attempts. Billy Bartlett caught 14 passes for 162 yards. Nik Tanner rushed for 100 yards on 17 carries.
Great Bend improved to 3-2 with a 42-18 victory over Wichita West. A dual threat, Panthers junior quarterback Koy Brack completed 10 of 17 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown, while he rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Dalton Bieker caught four passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Bonner Springs not only handed Basehor-Linwood its first loss of the season, the Braves forced the Bobcats to surrender their first points of a season. Led by junior Noah Villarreal with 135 rushing yards, Bonner Springs topped Basehor-Linwood 33-21. Senior Jackson Poe caught eight passes for 141 yards.
Emporia crushed Centennial League foe Topeka West 54-13. The Spartans ran for 336 yards as junior Jace Stewart led the way with 117 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Senior Sawyer Slayden added 91 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.
Class 4A-I:
Labette County picked up a huge win in the Southeast Kansas League, topping Fort Scott 34-7. The Grizzlies improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SEK, while the Tigers dropped to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the league. Grizzlies junior quarterback Easton Dean passed for 168 yards and a touchdown, and he rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns. The Labette County defense picked off three Fort Scott passes. Dean is nearing 1,000 passing yards on the season.
Tonganoxie improved to 5-0 with a 37-3 win over Lansing. Chieftains senior Dalton Bock rushed for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Korbin Riedel added 91 yards and a touchdown. It was the third game this season that Tonganoxie has allowed seven points or fewer.
Rose Hill earned its first win of the season with a 21-14 victory over El Dorado. The Rockets snapped an eight-game losing streak. Its previous win was also over El Dorado. Senior Dylan Sapp caught four passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Wamego nipped Chapman 14-12 as senior quarterback Justin Ebert passed for 112 yards and rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown. Chapman junior Dalton Harvey ran for 105 yards in the loss.
Class 4A-II:
Wichita Collegiate snapped an unusual two-game skid with a 28-13 victory over Wellington. It had been the first time the Spartans had lost two games in a row since the first two games of the 2013 season. Collegiate bounced back as senior Cody McNerney passed for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
Burlington improved to 3-2 with an easy 52-8 win over Osawatomie. The win kept Burlington in the mix near the top of the Pioneer League standings as Santa Fe Trail and Wellsville have 4-1 records. Burlington quarterback Connor Jeffers rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns. He also passed for a touchdown.
Two seasons after finishing with a 2-7 record, Smoky Valley improved to 4-1 with a 49-20 win over Hesston. Coach Tim Lambert has led the Vikings to a 12-4 record since the start of the 2016 season. Senior Kyle Anderson ran for 117 yards and four touchdowns against Hesston.
Kingman junior John Molitor ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns during a 45-6 rout of Wichita Independent. Hayden Albright and William Milford also added rushing touchdowns.
Class 3A:
Fredonia held off Leon-Bluestem, 55-49, in a wild two-overtime road game. The game was tied at 21 at halftime. Bluestem outscored Fredonia, 13-8, in the third quarter, but Fredonia outscored Bluestem, 12-7, in the fourth. Then, both teams scored eight points in the first overtime, and Fredonia delivered the final six points in the second. Even in the loss, Coy Moran had a big game with 20 of 25 passing for 306 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed 25 times for 113 yards and a pair of scores.
Russell lost its Homecoming game, 36-14, to Beloit in a NCAA contest. The Trojans moved to 4-1, 3-1 in league play, while Russell dropped to 3-2, 3-2 NCAA. Beloit led 18-0 at halftime. Russell scored twice in the third quarter on a 75-yard drive that ended on a five-yard touchdown run by Austin Price, and a 25-yard scoring pass from Price to Travis Tammen. However, Beloit’s ground game eventually churned out 363 rushing yards and outgained Russell 543-116. Trojan running back Zach Meier led Beloit with 25 carries for 201 yards and two scores. Hudson Gray had 180 passing yards and four scores on eight completions.
At Lewis Field Stadium in Hays, host Thomas More Prep trailed Cimarron 30-7 at point and fought back in the second half for a 44-35 loss. The Monarchs had some opportunities in the first half but threw a red-zone interception and had another opportunity from the Cimarron 1-yard line but mismanaged the clock just before the half and didn’t score. In the second half, TMP’s David McFarland found Creighton Renz for a 39-yard touchdown pass, one of three second-half throwing scores. Gavin Schumacher rushed for two touchdowns for the Monarchs. Cimarron had a 91-53 advantage in plays. Senior Josh Seabolt delivered 30 carries for 204 yards and a touchdown, and senior Jaylen Pickle rushed 16 times for 62 yards and five scores. The Bluejays rushed 83 times for 456 yards.
Norton led 56-0 and rolled over Southwestern Heights in a 56-14 home victory. Senior Jace Ruder completed 5 of 7 passes for 101 yards. He rushed six times for 91 yards and a pair of scores. Senior Tevin Petrie tallied 12 carries for 178 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Norton ran 39 plays and rolled up 391 yards of total offense.
Lakin moved to 5-0 and matched last season’s win total after a 5-5 season following a 53-0 road win against Stanton County.
Class 2-1A:
St. Mary’s Colgan defeated Girard, 28-12, in a home contest. Colgan grabbed a 7-0 on a Jeremiah Buche 34-yard run before Girard took advantage of a short field to drive 28 yards to pull within 7-6. Colgan extended its lead early in the second quarter as a Jake Dellasega interception set up an eventual 23-yard touchdown pass from Cade Simmons to Jeremiah Buche. Buche had two more touchdowns called back due to penalty. A Colgan fumble recovery led to another touchdown when Simmons found Cal Marquardt on a 12-yard scoring pass just before halftime.
After a 0-3 start versus MCL powers Smith Center, Norton and Phillipsburg, Plainville has captured two straight victories with a 50-6 win against Republic County on Homecoming. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Finnesy rushed 17 times for 189 yards and a touchdown. He completed all four of his passes for 69 yards and a TD. Hayden Gillum, formerly an all-state lineman now moved to fullback, had 39 rushing yards and a touchdown.
La Crosse defeated Sublette, 67-8, to win its Homecoming game. The Leopards have won three straight after an 0-2 start. Senior Zak Brown had 11 carries for 97 yards and three scores. Hunter Morgan passed for 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Elkhart led 55-0 at halftime and defeated Clayton, New Mexico in a 61-7 home win. Junior quarterback Lane Whisennand completed five of seven passes for 89 yards and a score. He had 15 carries for 233 yards and four scores. Senior Joshua Salazar tallied 10 rushes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Meade held off Syracuse in a 27-7 road victory. Senior Tristan Haynes completed 4 of 8 passes for 34 yards with two touchdowns against two interceptions. He rushed 30 times for 134 yards. Seniors Devon Waters and Lander Martin tallied a rushing touchdown.
Class 8-man I
Hill City defeated WaKeeney-Trego, 35-14, in District 8 and Mid-Continent League action. Ethan Hamel quarterbacked the win with 14 of 25 passing for 241 yards and three touchdowns versus one interception. Hamel tallied 12 rushes for 68 yards and a score. Hill City led 14-8 at halftime. For WaKeeney, Keagan Shubert finished 8 of 21 for 121 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Price delivered 23 carries for 196 yards and a score.
Ness City defeated Kinsley, 53-0. Brennan Chacon tallied 18 carries for 176 yards and six touchdowns. John Pfannenstiel rushed three times for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Central Plains beat Canton-Galva, 60-0, in a road contest that ended at halftime. Oiler quarterback Myles Menges completed 3 of 3 passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns. His lone rush went for a 61-yard score. Five players tallied a rushing touchdown. CP has won four straight since the season-opening loss to Victoria.
West Elk defeated Southern Coffey County, 54-8. Senior Cade Miller completed 2 of 4 passes for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He rushed three times for 75 yards and a score, part of four Patriots to have a rushing touchdown. Junior William Silvey completed 3 of 5 passes for 28 yards. He had 11 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Class 8-man II
Northern Valley earned a 46-0 home win against Lakeside-Downs to open District 5 action. Northern Valley led 8-0 after the first quarter and then tallied 30 unanswered in the second quarter. The Huskies scored the game’s final touchdown in the third. Northern Valley had a 48-27 play advantage. Senior Caden Kinderknecht finished 4 of 8 passing for 73 yards and a touchdown. He rushed 21 times for 168 yards and a pair of scores. Junior Nick Stutsman delivered 12 carries for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Northern Valley had 40 carries for 314 yards and five touchdowns. Kinderknecht led the Huskies with nine tackles and an interception. Junior Caden Bach picked off two passes.
Hartford defeated South Haven, 78-54, in a road win. Justice Kemmerer ran for 219 yards and four touchdowns. All of his rushing scores came in the second half on runs of 33, 23, 27 and 56 yards. He also added a 67-yard kickoff return for a score and completed one pass for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Dighton remained undefeated and moved to 17-1 in its last 18 contests with a 49-0 road win against Triplains-Brewster. Junior Blair Hoffman tallied 17 carries for 101 yards and five rushing scores. He completed five of seven passes for 135 yards. Junior Dalton Hoffman had 12 carries for 105 yards and one touchdown. The Hornets’ defense limited Dighton to 38 plays for 97 yards. Junior Dalton Hoffman had 13 tackles, three for loss, to lead the Hornets.
KCAA
The Wichita Homeschool Warriors put up 687 yards of total offense in a 64-42 shootout win over Pleasanton. Junior quarterback Marshal Masterson passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns and added 45 yards on the ground. Elliott Langhofer and Luke Johnson each rushed for three touchdowns. Langhofer led the Warriors with 179 yards, while Johnson added 164 yards on the ground. Langhofer also caught two passes for 126 yards and two scores.
6-Man
The Natoma Tigers picked up their first win since the 2014 season with a 51-0 shutout of Western Plains. Senior Bon Pongsuwan rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown and caught a 47-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore Shayne Engling added 47 yards and two scores.
Pawnee Heights remained unbeaten with a 52-26 win over Cheylin. The Tigers led 26-13 at halftime and won the second half by that exact same margin. Cheylin was led by freshman quarterback Colton McCarty who rushed for 151 yards and passed for 114 yards and two scores.
