Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Garden City continued their winning ways with a 45-26 win over rival Liberal. Quarterback Jesse Nunez led the way for the Buffaloes with 160 passing yards and one touchdown while rushing for 152 yards and five touchdowns. Garden City built a 30-0 lead before Liberal got on the scoreboard and turned the blowout into a grind out win for the Buffaloes.
Hutchinson cruised to a 56-16 win over Goddard-Eisenhower to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Salthawks turned seven first half possessions into six touchdowns and one kneel down to end the half. Hutchinson’s offense finished with 458 yards of offense and seven touchdowns while forcing three first half turnovers and eventually turning them into touchdowns.
Lawrence used a second half surge to beat Olathe North 28-7 on Friday night. Deadlocked at 7-7, the Lions responded with three unanswered second half touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Trey Moore rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lawrence in the win.
Shawnee Mission West improved to 3-2 on the year with a 39-20 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest on Thursday night. Kirby Grigsby, Zach Witters, and Dre Mccallop combined for 283 rushing yards and five touchdowns to lead the offenseive attack for the Vikings. Witters led the way with 136 yards and one score, while Grigsby tallied 75 yards and three touchdowns and Mccallop rushed for 72 yards and one trip to pay dirt.
Class 5A:
Goddard did all of their scoring in the two middle quarters to rout Salina South 42-7. Quarterback Blake Sullivan threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns, while Kody Gonzalez rushed for 133 yards and a score in the win. Sullivan found three different receivers for his three touchdown passes. Owen Beason, Jordan Cooke, and Gonzalez were on the receiving end of those touchdown throws.
Pittsburg earned their third shutout of the season with a 52-0 win over Andover Central. It didn’t take long for the Purple Dragons to take command of the game as running back Jhalani Long took the first carry from scrimmage for a 67 yard touchdown. Long finished the game with four total touchdowns to lead the offensive onslaught for Pittsburg.
Valley Center earned their fifth victory of the season with a 20-6 road win over Hays. Wyatt Lange rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown and threw for another to lead the Valley Center offense. Kicker Aaron Coash made two field goals to close out the scoring for Valley Center.
Emporia ran over Topeka West 40-7 to improve to 3-2 on the season. The Spartans jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Sawyer Slayden led the offense with 117 yards while Anthony Delgado rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns.
Class 4A-I:
Atchison continued their dominance with a 58-6 stomping of KC Washington. Dylon Leblue and Adam Smith led the rushing attack for the Redmen with 110 yards and 102 yards respectively with each finding the end zone twice. Smith also connected with Cole Batemon for two touchdowns through the air.
Buhler cruised to a 48-7 win over Winfield on Friday night. Dalton Brown rushed for two touchdowns and threw another as the Crusaders built a 35-0 halftime lead to take total control of the game.
De Soto dominated all facets of the game in their 35-0 shutout win over Nevada (Mo). The Wildcats put up five touchdowns and forced four turnovers in the game. Quarterback Bryce Mohl highlighted the De Soto offense with 115 rushing yards and 188 passing yards and two touchdowns. Trevor Watts caught both Mohl touchdown throws in the win.
McPherson extended their winning streak to three games with a 35-6 rout of Towanda-Circle. Casen Hoover threw for 192 yards and four touchdowns in the Bullpups win. Jeff Reed found himself on the receiving end of two of Hoover’s four touchdown tosses.
Class 4A-II:
Hugoton escaped with a 42-28 win over Goodland. Despite trailing 8-7 at the half, the Eagles offense woke up in the third quarter by scoring four touchdowns. Valentino Degollado threw for 315 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for another 135 yards and two more scores to lead Hugoton to the road win.
Nickerson improved to 4-1 on the years after a 36-14 win over Larned. Peyton Kuhns rushed 21 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers. Austin O’toole also found the end zone once while rushing for 81 yards on eight carries.
Scott City won its third game in a row with a 53-7 stomping of rival Ulysses. The Beavers offensive continues to soar after amassing 414 total yards and eight touchdowns. Wyatt Hayes led Scott City with 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Parsons outscored Iola 48-42 to earn their first win of the season. The Vikings road the legs of T.J. Mayhue who finished with 176 yards and three touchdowns including a 53-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown that put the game out of reach.
Class 3A:
Beloit remained undefeated with a 66-33 victory against Russell in a game that featured more than 1,100 yards of total offense. Beloit led 20-7 after the first quarter. Alex Windholz rushed 28 times for 271 yards and two scores for Russell. A major difference came in conversions; Beloit held a 14-3 scoring advantage on those plays. Russell finished with 619 yards of offense, and Beloit tallied 500. Russell held an 86-47 edge in plays.
Ellsworth rolled over Sacred Heart, 55-7, in the Knights’ Homecoming game as the Bearcats won their third straight contest. Zac Schneider threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half. He also had 13 rushes for 50 yards and two TDs. Ellsworth led 36-0 at halftime as two of the receiving TDs of 83 and 66 yards went to Kaden Davis. Fullback Luke Oberle tallied 12 carries for 140 yards and two scores. Sacred Heart had five turnovers. Sacred Heart’s standout backfield of Jacob Faerber and Abel Alvarez were injured; Faerber didn’t play and Alvarez was hurt early in the contest.
Riley County scored six points in each quarter and defeated winless Rock Creek, 24-7, in Mid-East League play. Riley County (3-2) had three touchdown runs from Garrett Staten of three, one and four yards. Riley County has won seven in a row versus Rock Creek.
Norton defeated Southwestern Heights, 60-16, in a road victory. The Bluejays led 28-0 after the first quarter and 51-0 at halftime. The Bluejays’ defense limited the Mustangs to 34 plays for 86 yards and forced three turnovers. Norton led 35-0 with 8:55 left in the first half.
Mission Valley earned a 38-36 overtime victory against Osage City. The Vikings moved to 4-1, while Osage City dropped to 3-2. Osage City scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Clay Phillips scored on runs of six, 44, 90 and three yards to lead Mission Valley.
Class 2-1A:
St. Mary’s Colgan won 35-13 at Girard in CNC play. Girard led 7-0 early before Colgan scored twice for a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Colgan eventually tacked on 21 more unanswered points to move to 2-3. Quarterback Billy Dickey tied the game with a one-yard run, and he threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Buche to take the lead. Max Wilson had a punt return for a score for a 21-7 lead. Dickey passed for 144 yards and three touchdowns; all three to Jeremiah Buche who caught seven for 118 yards.
Jefferson County North remained unbeaten with a 42-6 victory against Horton in District 1 play. JCN led 22-0 after the first quarter and 34-0 at halftime. Ridge Robertson scored three times with a 38-yard run, a 53-yard scoring pass from Boston Lane and a three-yard run. Additionally, Lane threw a 32-yard TD pass. The Chargers are one of three undefeated teams left in 2-1A, along with Lyndon and Troy. Through five weeks last season, the Chargers were 2-3.
La Crosse earned its first victory with a 70-0 win against Sublette in a matchup of two squads that entered Week 5 without a win. The Leopards had 463 rushing yards and nine rushing scores. Senior Brad Collins finished with 153 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Olpe moved to 2-3 after a 48-6 victory against Uniontown. The Eagles had three touchdowns of one, three, and one yard from Blaine Hinrichs, while Garrett Pimple scored on a 33-yard pass and a 30-yard fumble recovery. Olpe led 48-0 at the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Damon Schmidt finished 7 of 10 passing for 160 yards.
Chase County moved to 3-2 and remained 3-0 on the road with a 66-12 victory at Central Heights. Senior running back Kraig Hatcher finished with 21 carries for 201 yards and two scores. Fullback Doyle Conley tacked on 14 carries for 103 yards and two scores. Senior wide receiver Quintin Lee finished with three carries for 101 yards and a pair of rushing TDs and also caught an 11-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Colton Potts.
Class 8-man I
Hill City moved to 3-2 and 2-1 in District 8 play, while WaKeeney-Trego dropped to 3-2, 1-1. The Ringnecks won, 37-12, on the road. Aaron McDowell returned two 75-yard kickoffs for scores, including the game’s first points. Greg Hamel also threw a 24-yard scoring pass and rushed for a 10-yard touchdown. Hill City has three kick return scores and one pick-six through five games. Hill City will travel to Rural Vista this week.
Rural Vista bounced back from the double-overtime 74-72 home loss to Clifton-Clyde in Week 4 with a 56-6 victory against Valley Falls. Cade Stilwell scored on runs of 37, six, 46 and a 75-yard interception. Eli Fleming had scoring runs of 29 and 66 yards.
St. Paul stayed undefeated with a 54-6 win against Madison. Chandler Struthers rushed for five scores of 15, 12, 79, four and 44 yards. St. Paul ranks No. 1 in the classification with just 30 points permitted and have tallied 272 points. The Indians have a key road district game against West Elk this week.
West Elk rolled over Southern Coffey County, 64-8, and stayed perfect. The Patriots, who have outscored opponents, 286-36, received another big game from junior Cade Miller. He has 42 carries for 479 yards and 11 scores, including rushing TDs of 52, 44 and 13. As well, he scored on a 72-yard kickoff return and a 40-yard punt return. Miller had another punt return for a score earlier this season. He also recorded one punt and one kick return touchdown last season.
Class 8-man II
Sylvan-Lucas Unified won its district opener with a 58-28 victory versus winless Stockton. Stockton scored first and then Sylvan-Lucas responded with three straight scores and six of the next seven. The Mustangs moved to 4-1, 1-0 with the home victory, while Stockton dropped to 0-5, 0-1 in District 5.
Frankfort opened District 3 play with a 70-20 win against Axtell. Adam Kenworthy had another big game as Frankfort scored 24 points in the first quarter and 40 in the second. Kenworthy rushed for scores of 39, eight, 44 and 76 yards. He also threw touchdown passes of 26 and 55 yards. As well, Frankfort tallied two safeties and a pick-six for a score. It marked the Wildcats (3-2) highest scoring output since Oct. 17, 2014. It marked Frankfort’s first win versus Axtell since a 46-16 victory on Oct. 14, 2011.
Lakeside-Downs ended its 19-game losing streak in defeating Northern Valley, 86-50, at home to start District 5 play. The Knights led 32-14 after the first quarter and 52-30 at halftime. The Knights outscored Northern Valley, 14-12, in the third quarter and 20-8 in the fourth. The Huskies ran 88 total plays, 25 more than Lakeside. As well, Northern Valley held a 19-12 edge in first downs and had 29 fewer penalty yards. But the Knights had a massive yardage edge with 609 yards. Northern Valley finished with 420 yards. Senior Dawson Johnson led Lakeside in passing for 215 yards and rushing for 98 with three passing and four rushing scores. Junior Drew Cunningham finished with 16 carries for 231 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Austin Stroede collected four receptions for 134 yards and two scores and also scored off a fumble, interception and punt return.
Wilson moved to 4-1 with a 42-20 district-opening victory against Thunder Ridge in District 5 play. The Dragons are 10-4 in the last two seasons after the program won just nine games from 2011-14.
KCAA
Wichita Homeschool stepped outside of KCAA league play and outscored Wichita Life Prep, 82-74. The Warriors used a 32-8 second quarter to provide separation in building a 54-32 lead at halftime. The Life Prep Fire outscored the Warriors 42-28 in the second half. Luke Johnson led Homeschool with 177 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Quarterback T.J. Masterson passed for 160 yards and three scores. Regan Messner caught seven passes for 101 and two touchdowns. Life Prep’s Taj Munnings passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns while adding 99 yards and four scores on the ground.
The Manhattan-Flint Hills Christian Eagles used a big game on the ground by Derek Bowman to hold off Sunrise Christian Academy, 52-30. Bowman rushed for 174 yards and five touchdowns in the game. John Dunn led Sunrise with 113 yards and a score, while Alex Wyatt added two touchdown runs. Wyatt also passed for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Veritas Christian scored 20 points in the first and third quarters in beating St. John’s Military 48-20 on Friday. Michael Rask rushed for 245 yards and three touchdowns in the win for the Eagles. Trey Huslig added 188 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and passed for 157 yards and another touchdown to Rask. Jonathan Terry threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Muleskinners.
6-Man
Weskan scored 30 points in the first quarter in routing Wheatland-Grinnell, 50-6. Greg Kuykendall passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores to lead the Coyotes. The Thunderhawks’ touchdown came on a pass from Zach Gillespie to Austin Petersen.
Pawnee Heights held off Cheylin 32-19 despite a huge game from the Cougars’ Manuel Castillo. Castillo rushed 42 times for 255 yards and two touchdowns to lead Cheylin. Pawnee Heights improves to 3-2 with the win, while Cheylin falls to 1-4.
