Weather dominated the Kansas high school football theme for Week 2. The threat of severe weather forced administrators to move several games up to early evening on Friday, but unfortunately there were still multiple delays and postponements. On this week’s Subway Friday Fresh Take, we’ll take a look at a few key games that were able to reach a conclusion, and organize a list of postponements in order for you to enjoy some Kansas high school football throughout the weekend.

Spearville handles Hodgeman County again
After an intensely close vote that saw Spearville and Hodgeman County match-up edge the Burlingame and Hartford showdown to be named the Kpreps Fan’s Choice for Game of the Week, the defending champion Lancers left much less doubt in the outcome of the game on Friday night. Spearville scored 20 points in the first quarter and the game’s first 30 points in dispatching of Hodgeman County, 38-6.
Lancer returning All-State running back Luke Heskamp started the scoring with a 31-yard run, and Kolby Stein added a pair of touchdowns for the 20-0 first quarter lead. The Lancers then added a safety by Wyatt Hessman to lead 22-0 at halftime.
Heskamp’s third-quarter touchdown put the Lancers up 30-0 before the Longhorns got on the board on Jacob Salman’s short touchdown run.
Spearville’s Waylon Strecker added a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
Hoisington tops Collegiate in battle of ranked teams
Hoisington scored 23 unanswered points in the second half to top Wichita Collegiate, 31-22. The Cardinals came into the game ranked fourth in Class 3A, while the Spartans were No. 3 in Class 4A-II.
After the two teams traded touchdown runs in the first quarter, Collegiate took a 15-8 lead in the second quarter on a Cody McNerney touchdown pass to Jed Hourani. The score remained 15-8 in favor of the Spartans until the third quarter when McNerney hit Hourani again, this time from midfield, for a 22-8 lead.
The Cardinals would come right back and score on a 20-yard touchdown run by Cam Davis to pull within 22-16. Hoisington threatened again in the third quarter only to be stopped on downs in a goal-to-go situation by the Collegiate defense. The Spartans offense, however, couldn’t move and a poor punt gave Hoisington the ball back inside the Collegiate 15-yard line. The Cardinals took the lead for good on a Rudy Gearhart 11-yard touchdown run and PAT.
Hoisington all-state running back Hunter Hanzlick finished off an incredible night with a fourth-quarter touchdown, and Tyler Specht’s conversion pushed the lead to 31-22. Hanzlick rushed for more than 250 yards in the game on 35 attempts.
Junction City holds off Topeka High, 26-21
Junction City built an early 14-0 lead and used its defense to hold off Topeka High 26-21.
Quarterback Ryan Henington began a huge night by throwing a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes to Jovon Baldwin as the Blue Jays grabbed a 14-0 lead. After Topeka pulled within a touchdown at halftime, Henington broke a 70-yard touchdown run to give Junction City a 20-7 lead. Henington finished with more than 230 rushing yards and 135 passing yards with three total touchdowns.
Topeka High’s Corey Thomas added a 1-yard run to pull the Trojans to within 20-14 in the third quarter, but the Blue Jays extended that lead to 26-14 in the fourth. Thomas then hit freshman Miekyah Thomas on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 remaining to pull within 26-21.
Junction City recovered the Trojans’ onside kick attempt, but the Blue Jays gave the Trojans new life when they fumbled the Center-QB exchange while trying to kneel out the clock. Topeka took over with under 30 seconds remaining, but Thomas was intercepted by Tim Bell on the Trojans’ first play.
Tonganoxie escapes Eudora in OT, 46-40
Mason Beach threw four touchdown passes, including a 10-yarder to Caden Searcy in overtime to lead Tonganoxie over Eudora, 46-40.
Eudora, behind a big night from Khalil Thrasher, scored 20 points in the second quarter to grab a 20-12 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Zac Morgan broke free at midfield for a long touchdown run to bring Tonganoxie back even at 20 after the two-point conversion.
The Chieftains would extend their lead to 34-20 after a pair of touchdown runs, before Eudora would rally behind Gavin Elston and Thrasher. Elston’s short touchdown run pulled the Cardinals to within 34-26. Thrasher then scored twice to give Eudora a 40-34 lead. He finished with more than 150 yards rushing and three scores.
Trailing late, Tonganoxie scored on a touchdown pass from Beach to Brett George, but the two-point conversion failed leaving the game tied at 40. In overtime, Eudora got the ball first but lost a fumble on a pitch setting up Tonganoxie for Beach’s winning touchdown toss to Searcy.
Sabetha takes advantage of late gift, beats Holton 25-22
Sabetha recovered a Holton fumble at the Wildcat 11-yard line with nine seconds left in the game to set up the winning 28-yard field goal in the Blue Jays’ 25-22 win. It marked the first time Sabetha has defeated the Wildcats in nine years.
Holton seemed to be in control early after long touchdown runs by Miles McClintock touchdown and Spencer Baum put the Wildcats up 16-0. Sabetha would get on the board late in the first quarter on a Trey Snyder short touchdown run to pull within 16-8.
Holton’s Parker Zeller added a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first half for a 22-8 Wildcat lead. The Blue Jays would score out of the locker room in the third quarter to get within 22-16, and tie the game at 22 later in the third quarter setting up the dramatic finish.
Phillipsburg bests Smith Center again, 29-16
Mid-Continent League rivals Phillipsburg and Smith Center have met three times since late October of last season and all three games resulted in Panthers wins.
On Friday, Phillipsburg built a two-score lead late in the third quarter and again early in the fourth to hold off the Redmen, 29-16.
A Smith Center touchdown late in the third quarter pulled the Redmen within 22-16, but the Panthers would answer right back early in the fourth to settle on the final margin of 29-16.
Hugoton scores late to top Ulysses
Hugoton quarterback Valentino Degollado found Colby Korf for a short touchdown pass with under a minute to go and the Eagles converted the two-point conversion to win 15-14 over Ulysses.
The Eagles led 7-6 for much of the game after Degollado’s first touchdown pass to big tight end Zach Leininger.
But Ulysses would respond with the gound game as A.B. Romero scored his second touchdown with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 14-7 Tigers lead.
Degollado then led the Eagles on the game-winning drive late and Todd Fulton’s group decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win.
Holcomb finally solves Scott City
Defending Class 4A-II champion Holcomb outscored Scott City 26-7 in the second half to pull away for a 32-13 victory. Holcomb’s struggles with the Beavers had been well documented as the Longhorns had only won one of the past 13 meetings with Scott City entering Friday night’s game.
The two GWAC rivals were tied at 6-6 at halftime before Holton took control on a Trey Gilbert touchdown pass and a short run by Brandon Stegman in the third quarter.
Scott City quarterback Bo Hess ran for a nine-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to pull the Beavers to within 18-13, but Holcomb’s Dillon Williams provided the separation with a 75-yard touchdown run less than a minute later.
Holcomb would add a late touchdown run to cap the 19-point win.
Williams led the Longhorns with more than 100 yards rushing, while Gilbert passed for 145 yards and a touchdown. Wyatt Hayes rushed for 108 yards to lead the Beavers.
Scott City defeated Holcomb 15-7 last season.
Great Bend uses big second half to beat Hays
Great Bend shut out Hays in the second half en route to a 35-14 victory in Western Athletic Conference play.
After Great Bend built a 13-0 lead after the first quarter, Hays responded with a touchdown run from Keaton Markley and a touchdown pass from Hunter Brown to Collyn Kreutzer to take a 14-13 lead into halftime.
The Panthers took the lead for good early in the third quarter on a 35-yard touchdown run from Cal Barshall. Great Bend quarterback Jacob Murray also added a short touchdown run before Marshall broke free for a long scoring run to put the game away.
Marshall rushed for more than 150 yards on the night with his two touchdowns, while Murray combined for more than 200 yards of total offense.
