ATHLETIC STRENGTH INSTITUTE is a strength & conditioning facility that specializes in individualized strength and performance training along with nutritional coaching for athletes based in Lawrence, KS.

The trainers at ASI have athletic backgrounds in collegiate rugby, football, and track & field. Our strength & conditioning experience includes working with professional athletes from the NFL and PGA, collegiate athletes from Division 1 & 2 schools, and high school and amateur athletes.

Our training process starts with a series of strength and flexibility assessments in order to identify weak muscles, flexibility limitations, and faulty movement patterns. Many injuries are a direct result of one or more of these limitations.

The physical and violent nature of football leaves certain areas of the body more susceptible to injury, such as the:

  • Head (weak neck muscles lead to a higher rate of concussions)
  • Shoulder
  • Low back
  • Knee
  • Ankle

Starting the training process with strength and flexibility assessments exposes these weaknesses and allows us to catch a potential injury before it occurs.

We then use the results of the strength and flexibility assessments and, considering the physical demands of the athlete’s sport, develop an individualized training program.

The goal of the initial training phase is to increase single-limb strength and flexibility. This approach ensures the athlete is as balanced as possible from left to right and front to back, providing the foundation that additional strength and power can then be built upon. This approach also better prepares athletes for long-term progress and fewer injuries.

We also prioritize nutrition when working with athletes because training and nutrition should always be viewed as one entity. Different sports - even different positions within the same sport - have different nutritional needs to fuel performance and recovery.

While no diet directly increases strength, power, or endurance, an adequate diet enables an athlete to train and compete to the best of their ability. We provide nutritional guidelines to athletes based on their body size, sex, genetics, sport, environmental training conditions, as well as on duration, frequency, and intensity of training. Requirements, therefore, vary greatly between and within athletic groups.

We make sure that each athlete is prepared to meet the demands of their sport through intelligently designed training and nutrition programs that provide continued and sustainable progress.

We do not believe in a “one-size-fits-all” approach to training or nutrition. The best training and nutrition programs are ones that are individualized to the athlete.
