We are through two weeks of the Kansas high school football season and several good storylines emerged on Friday night. On the Subway Friday Fresh Take we’ll look at some great team accomplishments and some unbelievable individual efforts. Long losing streaks come to an end
In the first two weeks of the season, five teams have broken long losing streaks in the hope of turning their programs around.Â
Last week we saw a pair of 32-game streaks stopped when Marysville beat St. Marys 35-19, and Burrton top Fairfield-Cunningham, 41-12.
Three more teams ended long skids on Friday night.
Harmon edges Highland Park for elusive win
We start in Kansas City where the JC Harmon Hawks snapped a 31-game losing skid with a 30-26 win over Topeka Highland Park.
Prior to Friday night, Harmon’s last win came on October 7, 2011 when the Hawks topped KC Wyandotte, 14-6.
Parsons dominant in ending 29-game skid
The Parsons Vikings emphatically halted their 29-game streak with a 40-0 shutout at Coffeyville.
Marc Svaty’s Vikings scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and by the end of the game a running clock was initiated.
Parsons came into Friday night having lost 29 consecutive games since a 41-40 win over Independence on October 27, 2011. That win qualified the Vikings for the 2011 state playoffs where they fell 41-13 to Columbus the following Tuesday.
Erie bests Oswego
Finally, less than 20 miles north of Parsons, the Erie Red Devils got on track with a 34-20 win over Oswego. The Red Devils snapped a 24-game losing streak having last won 17-8 over Baxter Springs on September 21, 2012.

Kpreps Fans vote for two Games of the Week
The final vote in this week’s Kpreps Game of the Week poll ended so close that we decided to feature two games.
SM West rallies on Day 2 to top Olathe Northwest
On Thursday night, Sunflower League rivals Olathe Northwest and Shawnee Mission West were able to finish the first half before storms postponed the conclusion of the game until Friday afternoon. When the game was suspended, Olathe Northwest led 12-0.Â
On Friday, SM West Vikings rallied for a 20-12 win. The Viking defense held the Ravens to approximately 25 yards of total offense in Friday’s second half.    Â
Burlingame throttles Marais des Cygnes Valley
The second of the two Games of the Week took place at the eight-man level where Burlingame hosted Marais des Cygnes Valley in a Lyon County League battle.
Burlingame scored 28 points in the first quarter and dominated the MdCV Trojans 62-14. Bearcat running back Robert Hutchins rushed for five touchdowns and returned an interception 42 yards for a sixth score.
Quarterback Dalton Sporing tossed a pair of touchdown passes and scored one of his own on a 15-yard run.

Wichita Northwest backs up Week 1 win by outscoring Kapaun
A week after pulling off a 31-24 upset over Bishop Carroll, Wichita Northwest faced the challenge of beating Kapaun Mount Carmel at Cessna Stadium.
Challenge accepted and passed.
Northwest rushed for 380 yards and beat the Crusaders 49-33.
Grizzly quarterback Kevin Folsom completed all 11 of his pass attempts for 149 yards and two touchdowns, and added 123 rush yards and two more scores.
Jahlyl Rounds rushed for 122 yards and two scores, while Antonio Joyner contributed 91 rush yards and a touchdown each rushing and receiving.
Northwest led 27-21 at halftime, but extended that lead to 49-27 in the fourth quarter.
Kapaun quarterback Brock Monty passed for 373 yards and three touchdowns, but the Crusaders were held to just 58 yards rushing. Colter Hullings caught eight passes for 118 yards and two scores. Â
Jaguars dominate in the battle of Andover
Andover Central topped Andover 37-13 on Friday to win the latest edition of the rivalry and city bragging rights.
Jaguar quarterback Peyton Huslig tossed a pair of early touchdown passes as Central essentially put the game away with a 23-0 first half. Huslig passed for 160 yards and connected with Isaac Anthemides on two touchdown strikes and Darraja Parnell for another. Anthemides caught five passes for nearly 100 yards on the night.
Parnell only caught two passes on the night, but also contributed a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown that put the Jaguars up 23-0.
Andover Central back Jordan Birch rushed for 105 yards and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Andover was led by Robert Bundy’s 140 rushing yards.
Maize South uses goal line stand, tops Holton 20-13
Holton jumped out to a 13-0 lead on the road at Maize South before the Mavericks rallied behind senior quarterback Korie Frausto.
Frausto threw a touchdown passes and ran for a score to send the game into halftime tied at 13.
Holton went on one of its patented long drives spanning 85 yards and nearly eight minutes of game time. The Wildacats found themselves with a fourth-and-goal at the three yard line.
The Maverick defense came up with the stop at the 1-yard line and Maize South quickly drove the field.Â
Jacob Perez scored a 4-yard touchdown with 5:45 remaining which proved to be the winning points for Maize South.
Holton won last year’s meeting 40-21.
Halstead grinds out win over Hesston
Halstead used a relentless rushing attack to top Hesston for only the second time in the past eight meetings.
The Dragons rushed for more than 325 yards in the 18-6 victory over the Swathers. Blake Beckett rushed for more than 120 yards and two touchdowns for Halstead.
Silver Lake survives in overtime again
A week ago, Silver Lake held off Holton 23-22 in overtime when the Wildcats missed a PAT attempt to tie the game. On Friday night, Silver Lake once again survived overtime by beating Perry-Lecompton, 39-38.
After trailing Silver Lake 21-6 at halftime, the Kaws rallied to within 24-14 after three quarters and scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Perry-Lecompton scored first in overtime to lead 38-32. The Kaws burned a timeout and set up for the two-point conversion, but failed to connect on a slant pattern in the end zone.
Silver Lake responded with a touchdown pass from Dalton Dultmeier to Ryan Wagner on the first play of their overtime possession. The Eagles added the PAT with no problem to win 39-38.

Ranked teams lose by the pair in Class 4A-I, 2-1A, and 8M-I
Two teams each fell from the Top 5 Rankings in Class 4A-I, 2-1A, and 8M-I on Friday night.
Rural uses turnovers to upset Hayden
Washburn Rural (6A) took advantage of five turnovers to upset 4A-I No. 3 Topeka Hayden, 26-14. Rural’s Matthew Williams rushed for 185 yards, including two long touchdown runs that totaled 131 yards.
The Junior Blues also returned a Hayden interception for a touchdown.
De Soto uses turnovers to pounce on Paola
The De Soto Wildcats converted a pair of Paola turnovers into two scores in the final  :25 seconds of the second quarter to pull away from the Panthers. Leading 7-0, the De Soto defense returned an interception for a touchdown with 25 seconds remaining until halftime to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.  Shortly after, De Soto recovered a Panther fumble and converted on a field goal to lead 17-0 at halftime.Â
Nathan Staats scored his eight touchdown of the season late in the third quarter to pull Paola within 17-7. But De Soto would tack on another score and hold on for the 23-7 upset over No. 5 Paola.

No. 2 Phillipsburg, No. 4 La Crosse fall in 2-1A
In Class 2-1A, Mid-Continent League rivals Norton (3A) and No. 2 Phillipsburg squared off in a sloppy game.Â
Norton held on for a 7-6 win in a game that featured nine total turnovers. Norton turned the ball over six times and appears to have lost standout Gavin Lively to an injury late in the second quarter.
After knocking off defending 2-1A champion Olpe last week, No. 4 La Crosse fell on the road at Larned, 40-12.
Solomon bombs Wakefield in battle of 8M-I ranked teams
In 8-Man, Division I, No. 5 Solomon dominated No. 3 Wakefield 42-6. Quarterback Jake Tiernan completed 9 of 10 passes for 124 yards and threw four touchdown passes for the Gorillas. Tiernan connected with former Solomon quarterback Cain Fowles five times for 66 yards and two scores.
Zach Neilson led seven different Gorilla ball carriers with 78 rushing yards and a touchdown. Senior Kord Hilbert added 67 yards rushing.
Solomon avenged last season’s 96-46 loss to Wakefield in which the Bombers’ Zack Melius rushed for 325 yards and scored 11 total touchdowns.
Caldwell upsets No. 4 Udall
During Udall’s 9-0 regular season in 2014, the Eagles closest game came in a 14-12 victory over Caldwell in Week 2.
For a half on Friday night, it appeared as if history might repeat itself. The Eagles led Caldwell 12-6 at halftime, but fell victim to multiple turnovers in the second half as Caldwell ran away with a 52-24 win.

Southwell drills long field goal for Fort Scott
Fort Scott dominated Spring Hill 50-14 on Friday to move to 2-0 on the season. But Tiger senior kicker Brody Southwell stole the show connecting on a 52-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
Southwell was named to the Kpreps 4A, Division I All-State Team as a kicker in 2014 after connecting on all seven of his field goal attempts on the season.

Pennsylvania player rushes for 722 yards, 10 touchdowns in 107-90 win
Admittedly it’s not Kansas high school football, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention Meadville’s (Pa.) Journey Brown. Brown rushed for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns on 30 carries in Meadville’s 107-90 win over Dubois (Pa.).  Meadville trailed 56-51 at halftime, but took an 85-82 lead at the end of the third quarter.
