Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Tied 14-14 with six seconds left in the first half, Hutchinson quarterback Canyon Maldonado scrambled right and connected with Trey Richards for a 22-yard touchdown pass that gave the Salthawks a 21-14 lead at the half. Hutch did not look back as they broke the game open in the second half and cruised to a 48-14 win over Olathe South to open their 2015 season.
Shawnee Mission West running back Rahjee Byers rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Vikings over Lawrence Free State, 34-26. Senior quarterback Adam Rellihan rushed for another pair of touchdowns and completed eight passed for 133 yards in the win.
Wichita Northwest opened their season with an upset victory over Wichita City League powerhouse Bishop Carroll on Friday night, 31-24. Northwest quarterback Kevin Folsom posted a solid stat line completing 20-of-28 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown and rushing for 116 yards and another score.
Manhattan posted its first victory and shutout of the season with a 47-0 win over Shawnee Heights. Keadrian McDonald and Ian Trapp combined to score the first six touchdowns for the Indians, the longest came on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Trapp to McDonald.
Shawnee Mission North used a balanced attack to beat Shawnee Mission South 22-8 on Friday night. Sophomore Reese Sila rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown for the Indians, while quarterback Will Schneider ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass to Tyler Burnett. The Indians begin the season 1-0 for the first time since 2011.
Class 5A:
The Wichita Heights rushing attack combined for 482 yards and six touchdowns en route to a 53-14 win over Wichita Southeast. Heights quarterback Garrett Haskins led the Falcons to scoring drives on seven of eight opportunities. Haskins also scored three rushing touchdowns in the win.
St. James Academy scored 14 points in the first quarter and held off Pleasant Hill (Mo.) 28-8. The Thunder increased their lead to 21-8 by halftime, and the defense held the Roosters scoreless in the second half.
Great Bend trailed 14-7 at halftime against the Leavenworth Pioneers but used a third quarter rally as the defense held strong for the entire fourth quarter to escape with a 19-17 win. Jacob Murray led the Panthers in the win with 108 yards on the ground and one trip to pay dirt.
The Braves from Bonner Springs went on the road and earned their first victory of the season with a 28-14 win over Eudora on Friday night. Bonner Springs jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead as quarterback Connor Byers was credited with three total touchdowns in the win.
Class 4A-I:
Baldwin’s defense made a big fourth-down stop at midfield with 42 seconds remaining, preserving a season-opening 21-19 victory against visiting Basehor-Linwood. Baldwin got on the scoreboard first on just its second play from scrimmage when Justin Howard broke free for a 58-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs scored again when senior Joel Katzer turned Basehor's mishandled punt snap into a 60-yard touchdown.
Fort Scott finally put the game away midway through the fourth quarter when quarterback Kaleb DeLaTorre punched the ball in from a yard out as the Tigers extended Parsons’ losing streak to 29 games with a 24-7 win. The Tigers and Vikings were tied 7-7 before a 37-yard field goal from Brody Southwell that gave Fort Scott a 10-7 advantage.
De Soto shut out KC Harmon 56-0 on Friday night to earn its first win of the season. De Soto scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter and tacked on four more scores before halftime to put the game out of reach.
Peyton Huslig passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns as Andover Central outscored Valley Center, 54-31. Running back Jordan Birch added 125 yards rushing and two scores, and caught one of Huslig's touchdown passes.
Class 4A-II:
Girard used a balanced offensive attack to earn a 20-6 win over Riverton on Friday night. The Trojans got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Trey Eaton in the first half and Eaton was on the receiving end of another from quarterback Eric Wilson.
Baxter Springs went on the road to Southeast-Cherokee and came away with a 32-7 victory. The Lions scored the first 32 points of the game highlighted by a 62-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jarret Dotson to receiver Mason Hartley.
The Pratt Greenbacks did not have to punt all game as they crushed the Lyons Lions 35-7 in their home opener. Junior Hunter Kaufman ended the game with seven carries and 67 yards and quarterback Landon Studer also had an impressive game, ending the night completing five of six passes for 88 yards.
Josh Osborne scored three touchdowns and was one of six Wichita Trinity players to score touchdowns in the Knights’ 55-0 victory over Douglass on Friday night.
Class 3A:
Despite losing the opening kickoff on an onside kick, the Chaparral Roadrunners cruised to a 43-27 season-opening victory over Wichita Independent. Jacob Jenkins led the way with 109 rushing yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.
Fredonia routed the Erie Red Devils 35-6 to open their 2015 campaign. The Yellow Jackets put things away before halftime scoring the first 35 points of the game. Kaden Unruh scored from one-yard out to open the scoring and threw another touchdown pass before the first half ended.
Kingman trailed Nickerson by 13 points in the fourth quarter but used a late rally to come away with a 26-20 win. The Eagles scored 19 unanswered points in the fourth including the go-ahead touchdown from sophomore quarterback Chris Ontiveros on a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line.
Both Galena and St. Mary’s Colgan were held scoreless in the first half and it wasn’t until the last minute of the third quarter that proved to be the difference in the game. Galena elected to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line to break the tie and eventually decide the outcome of the game. Junior quarterback P.J. Sarwinski went over the top of the pile for the score that gave the Bulldogs the 7-0 win over the Panthers on Thusday night.
Class 2-1A:
The Lyndon Tigers scored in the first and fourth quarters and the defense shut out Herington to preserve a 14-0 season-opening win. The Tiger rushing attack combined for 193 yards and one score in the win. Junior quarterback Rylan Burns completed 10-of-13 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown pass.
Doniphan West found themselves down 6-0 after the first quarter but scored 32 unanswered points as the Mustangs beat Onaga 32-6 on Friday night. A 20 -point second quarter gave Doniphan West the lead headed into the half as the defense held strong and posted a shutout for the last three quarters of play.
Chase County shut out West Franklin 29-0 to earn their first win of the 2015 season. Kraig Hatcher paced the Bulldogs’ offense with 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
Medicine Lodge put up 59 points and earned a shutout as well as the Indians crushed Belle Plaine on Friday night. Medicine Lodge will travel to Conway Springs next Friday while Belle Plaine will host Garden Plain.
Class 8-man I
Central Burden won a shootout with Caldwell to open the 2015 season last Friday night. The Raiders and Blue Jays combined for a total of 108 points with Central Burden coming out on top 66-42.
Ellinwood shut out St. John 50-0 to open the season in Central Prairie League action. The Eagles racked up 258 yards on the ground led by senior running back Jordan Duvall who rushed for 123 yards on 10 carries. Duvall, Kaleb Schartz, and Tyson Martinez each had two rushing touchdowns.
WaKeeney-Trego put up 52 points in their win over Stockton, 52-22. The Golden Eagles scored 24 points in the third quarter to break the game wide open. Seniors Cedric Flax and Corbin Schoenthaler rushed for over 100 yards and combined for six rushing touchdowns.
Uniontown was able to enforce the 45-point rule in their 58-0 win over Altoona-Midway. The Eagles rushed for five touchdowns and returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown.
8-man II
The Chase Kats began the season on the right foot with a 52-6 thrashing of Wheatland-Grinnell. The Kats scored 30 points in the first quarter and led 36-0 at halftime. Brendon Clark rushed for four touchdowns in the win.
Minneola’s Landon Walker had a huge night in a season-opening 56-6 win over Fowler. Walker rushed for 102 yards and four touchdowns on only five carries on offense. On defense, the returning all-state selection returned an interception for a touchdown and logged four tackles. Walker also returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and a punt 40 yards for another score.
South Barber scored in each quarter of a 26-0 shutout of Pratt-Skyline. Junior quarterback Grant Cantrell completed 10 of 17 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, and led the Chieftains with 81 yards rushing. Cantrell also returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.
St. Francis used a strong defensive effort to shutout Triplains-Brewster 24-0 to open the season. The Indian defense intercepted three passes as part of four forced turnovers on the night. St. Francis held Triplains-Brewster to only 48 rushing yards on 31 attempts.
