Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.

Class 6A

Wichita Northwest cruised to a 49-6 win over Wichita South on Friday. The Grizzlies gained 209 yards on the ground with four touchdowns led by senior KeShaun McGaugh with 75 yards and two scores.

Lawrence Free State battled through the rain and the wet conditions to come away with a 21-6 win over Shawnee Mission South. The Firebirds defense forced three turnovers in the first half to lead 14-0 at the break. Free State controlled the time of possession in the second half by snapping the ball nearly every play with three seconds or less left on the play clock.

 Washburn Rural scored touchdowns in four different ways in the first quarter en route to its 52-7 stomping of Topeka Highland Park. Junior Blues running back Matthew Williams scored twice in the opening frame with a seven-yard rush and a 66-yard punt return. Rural only finished with 238 yards of total offense mainly due to the field position advantage they had throughout the course of the game.

 

Class 5A

Down 41-35 in overtime and faced with a fourth-and-goal from the 25 yard line did not prevent Maize from doing the impossible against Newton on Friday night. Maize quarterback Connor Lungwitz darted a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Stewart to tie the game and eventually escape with a 42-41 victory after the PAT was good.

Topeka Seaman scored 28 unanswered points after trailing 7-0 early to spoil the Emporia Spartans homecoming 35-20. Seaman running back Tanner Taylor rushed for 102 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns in the win.

Great Bend earned its second win of the season with a 28-14 victory over Liberal on Friday night. The Panthers took advantage of good field position all night to score four touchdowns. Senior running back Trent Uselton led the way for the Panthers with 91 yards rushing.

 

Class 4A-I

The Baldwin Bulldogs have now won four straight after a thrilling 20-14 double-overtime win over the Paola Panthers. Senior running back Mario Garcia scored from 10 yards out on the first play of the second overtime to give the Bulldogs its fourth win of the season. Baldwin has won its last three games in the last 10 seconds of the game or in overtime.

Rose Hill blocked what would be the game-tying PAT to escape with a thrilling 27-26 overtime win against Augusta on Friday night. Rose Hill held a 20-3 lead in the fourth quarter but Augusta came storming back and forced overtime after a Michael Albright 22-yard field goal with 12 seconds left.  Brett Bonar scored the overtime touchdown for the Rockets in the win. 

De Soto came away with a 13-12 victory over Louisburg on Friday night. The Wildcats went up 7-0 in the first quarter after a 47-yard rushing touchdown, but Louisburg would score the next 12 points in the fourth quarter to take its first lead of the game. De Soto’s Josh Miller rushed for the eventual 24-yard, game-winning touchdown with just under two minutes to play in regulation.

 

Class 4A-II

Wamego High School came away with a nail-biting 20-14 win over Concordia Friday night. The game came down to a final drive. Wamego scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute of game to preserve the win. Wamego and Concordia were deadlocked at 14-14 at the half.  Wamego senior quarterback Kyler Alderson completed 15 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Osawatomie posted its second straight shutout with a 45-0 win over Central Heights on Friday. Trojan quarterback Brody Russell threw for 141 yards and three touchdowns, two of those went to Chaseton Wylie. The Osawatomie rushing attack combined for 215 yards in the win.

The Larned Indians came away with an 18-13 road win over Haven for its third straight victory. Haven returned two kick-offs for touchdowns for quick strike scores in the first half. Larned’s defense prevented the Haven offense to put any more points on the board in the second half as Evan Skelton plowed his way to two rushing touchdowns to lead the Indians to a comeback win.

 

Class 3A

Southeast-Cherokee improved to 3-3 on the season with a 27-20 win over Northeast-Arma. The Lancers rushed for a game high 332 yards and two touchdowns, while the Vikings gained 209 yards on the ground. Southeast senior running back Ryan Rakestraw led the way with 145 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Cody Schlesener rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Kayden Besher rushed for 112 yards and another two touchdowns to lead Southeast of Saline to a 41-0 blowout win over Ellsworth.

The Riverside Cyclones collected its fourth win of the season with a 36-12 win over Doniphan West. Quarterback Andrae McGaughy rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns, while Mason McCall rushed for 105 yards and another touchdown to lead the Cyclones in the win.

 

Class 2-1A

Whitewater-Remington outscored Yates Center 22-8 in the second half to claim a 34-14 district win. Wyatt Lear rushed for 231 yards and a touchdown to lead the Broncos. Todd Ensz and Blake Thunberg each rushed for two touchdowns for Remington. Mikey Bruner compiled 114 yards of total offense to lead Yates Center.

Ell-Saline took advantage of a 78-yard kickoff return and an 80-yard fumble return to beat Smith Center 14-13 in the District 6 opener. Louie Arceo returned the opening kickoff of the second half 78 yards to set up the Cardinals first touchdown and Luke Sheridan scooped up a fumble in the final seconds of the third quarter and took all the way back for a touchdown.

The Oakley Plainsmen picked off Thomas More Prep four times and recovered another fumble in the end zone in its 33-0 shutout win. Plainsmen running back Colter Stoll rushed for three touchdowns in the win.

 

Class 8-Man-I

Peabody-Burns improved to 6-0 on the season with a 48-0 thumping of Madison on Friday. The Warriors gained 315 total yards, 244 of them came from the ground game. Braxton Kyle led the way for the Warriors with three rushing touchdowns.

It was a battle between both ground games between Pratt-Skyline and Kiowa County on Friday night. Dustin Weber ran for 166 yards on 30 carries with four touchdowns to lead Pratt-Skyline to a 52-38 shootout win over Kiowa County. Kiowa County’s Dylan Jacks rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort. 

Udall scored 54 first half points to cruise to a 60-14 win over the Sedan Blue Devils. Udall’s Dalton Loos and Hunter Kistler combined to rush for 248 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Eagles to their sixth win of the season.

 

Class 8-Man-II

Argonia-Attica remained undefeated on the season with a 53-6 thumping of South Haven. Devon Newberry led the Titans with 84 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Doss Grigsby added two more rushing touchdowns in the blowout win.

Caldwell scored 38 of its 46 points in the first quarter to route Pretty Prairie 46-0. Blue Jays quarterback Darin Ward threw for 146 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 76 yards and another three touchdowns to carry the load for the Blue Jays.

The Stafford Trojans squeaked out a 40-38 win over Ashland on Friday night. Trojan sophomore quarterback Parker Patterson threw for 209 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 64 yards and two more touchdowns in Stafford’s win. Senior running back Ethan Johnson ran for two touchdowns as well for Stafford. Ashland quarterback Corey McCann threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort.
