The Kansas high school football season is flying by as the small classifications have began district play and all other classes will start the “second season” after next week. Action from Week 5 resulted in only minor changes in this week’s polls. Visit our Rankings page to view a complete list of the top five teams in each classification and how they performed last week.
The Class 6A rankings remain unchanged for another week as No. 5 Olathe South’s 31-21 win over Shawnee Mission West was the closest game among ranked teams. Top-ranked Shawnee Mission East continues to play consistently as the Lancers picked up an impressive 49-14 win at Lawrence Free State. Olathe North struggled for a while, but eventually the No. 2 Eagles topped Leavenworth 38-22. Topeka High used a 21-0 second half to rout Topeka Seaman 49-14, and No. 4 Blue Valley topped Blue Valley North 35-7 on Thursday night.
Class 5A’s top-ranked team, Bishop Carroll, cruised to a 49-0 win over Wichita North on Thursday night. Golden Eagle Denzel Goolsby returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns in addition to rushing for a score. Salina South remains at No. 2 this week after a 42-10 road win over previously-unbeaten Andover. Pittsburg sits in the three spot after dominating Parsons 56-0 for a quarter and a half. A running clock was initiated early in the second quarter after the Purple Dragons scored their 56th point. Parsons decided for forfeit the game mid-way through the second quarter due to multiple injuries. St. Thomas Aquinas moves up a spot to No. 4 this week after a 34-21 win over Gardner-Edgerton, while Blue Valley West drops a spot to No. 5 after falling to Bishop Miege.
Bishop Miege remains atop the 4A, Division I poll after pulling away from Blue Valley West in the second half to win 35-7. The Stags and Jaguars were tied at 7 at halftime before Miege scored a touchdown and turned a blocked punt in to another short touchdown drive to gain separation. Hays remains in the No. 2 spot after another big night from quarterback Alex Delton. Delton passed for about 160 yards and three touchdowns and added 98 yards and another score on the ground as the Indians beat Wichita South 57-8. Topeka Hayden stays at No. 3 after a comfortable 55-6 win over Topeka Highland Park, while defending champion Buhler moves up a spot to No. 4 after rolling past Rose Hill, 48-3. KC Piper falls one spot to No. 5 this week after a 31-24, overtime loss to Bonner Springs. The Pirates trailed by 11 points twice in the game before rallying to force overtime, but could not complete a fourth-and-goal pass in overtime to match Bonner Springs’ score.
Class 4A Division II is yet another classification without a change this week. Top-ranked Andale had little trouble with previously-unbeaten Wellington, 63-21. The Indians rushed for more than 430 yards in beating the Crusaders. Columbus handled Riverton 33-14 and Holton beat Nemaha Central 28-6 to remain at Nos. 2 and 3 in the poll, respectively. In their first week in the rankings, the Frontenac Raiders responded with a 14-7 win over rival St. Mary’s Colgan. The Raiders broke a scoreless tie with a desperation 29-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Seward to Ryan Long on the final play of the first half. Holcomb remains in the No. 5 spot this week after shutting out Colby, 27-0.
Silver Lake and Rossville continued path towards a showdown of undefeated teams in district play. The top-ranked Eagles had little trouble in beating Winfield 56-0, while Rossville took care of St. Marys 56-12. Scott City remains at No. 3 this week thanks to a 42-0 shutout of Hugoton, while Conway Springs is ranked fourth after a 56-21 win over Wichita Independent. The Spartans of Wichita Collegiate are once again in the fifth spot after a 26-7 win over Clearwater.
After all the shake-up in the Class 2-1A top five a week ago, the top five remains unchanged this week as all ranked squads posted comfortable wins. Top-ranked Phillipsburg beat Bennington 36-6, while No. 2 La Crosse beat Ellis 42-22 behind fill-in quarterback Andrew Jay. Jay switched positions with Jack Garcia this week to try and help Garcia recover from a broken finger. Garcia responded by compiling more than 100 yards of total offense in his first game at running back. Olpe handled Whitewater-Remington 41-22 to open district play, while Meade blasted Syracuse 59-16 to remain at No. 4. Fifth-ranked Sedgwick topped Sacred Heart 35-7 on Saturday to complete the week’s action.
In Eight-Man, Division I, all five teams picked up wins with No. 4 Spearville outlasting a strong Ness City team 50-38. Elsewhere, No. 5 Madison handled Rural Vista to open district play, while the top three teams in the poll Hanover, Osborne, and Central Plains all posted big district wins.
The Eight-Man, Division II poll also remains unchanged for another week. Top-ranked Chetopa rolled to a 72-0 half over Altoona-Midway, and No. 2 Beloit St. John’s-Tipton handled Natoma. After Otis-Bison scored 104 points a week ago, the Cougars could muster only eight points in a 60-8 loss to No. 3 Thunder Ridge this week. Victoria was impressive in shutting out previously-unbeaten Northern Valley 48-0. Sharon Springs-Wallace County rounds out the top five again this week. The Wildcats posted a convincing 50-16 district win over Triplains-Brewster.
