On Monday, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) released sub-state assignments for girls and boys basketball and regional assignments for wrestling.

6A Girls

The top two teams in Class 6A have been placed in the same sub-state as the No. 2 ranked Maize Eagles will host a strong field that includes defending champion and preseason No. 1 Wichita South as well as No. 6 Garden City.

On paper, No. 4 Blue Valley North appears have the most friendly draw as the only ranked team in the Blue Valley West Sub-State.

5A Girls

Class 5A's 2013 third-place finisher Newton will host a loaded bracket with five teams in the KBCA preseason top ten. Last year's Class 6A runner-up and preseason 5A No. 2 Wichita Heights headlines a field that also includes No. 3 Kapaun Mt. Carmel, No. 4 Salina Central, No. 6 Andover, and No. 7 Salina South. All of the above mentioned teams, with the exception of Salina Central, competed in a state tournament a year ago but only two will punch tickets to Topeka this March.

4A-D1 Girls

The split of Class 4A into two division results in eight, four-team Sub-State tournaments in each division. Defending champion Wamego will have to get by No. 7 Topeka Hayden in the Baldwin Sub-State tournament. Spring Hill will host a stacked foursome that includes No. 2 Fort Scott, No. 3 Paola, and No. 10 Louisburg. Fort Scott and Paola met in last year's 4A third-place game with the Tigers claiming a 51-40 victory.

4A-D2 Girls

Only two sites in Class 4A Division II have more than one team in the KBCA preseason top ten. No. 6 Andale will host a field that includes No. 5 Wichita Trinity while No. 7 Colby and No. 9 Hugoton will travel to Goodland for Sub-State.

Class 3A Girls

A new champion will be crowned in Class 3A as Burlington has moved up to 4A Division II. On paper, No. 4 Cimarron will host the most top-heavy field with No. 7 Garden Plain and No. 8 Holcomb assigned to their Sub-State. Preseason No. 1 Hesston will travel to Marion for sub-state play while No. 2 Riley County will have to travel to No. 6 Silver Lake's home court for a chance to play in Hutchinson.

2A Girls

On the girls side in 2A, the Berean Academy Sub-State includes top-ranked Hillsboro, No. 4 Sterling, and No. 6 Moundridge. Hillsboro drops down to 2A after finishing third in the 3A state tournament last season. Sterling finished third in the 2A tournament last season by defeating Moundridge 57-35.

Defending champion Smith Center opens the season ranked No. 2 and is the only team in the Oberlin Sub-State ranked in the KBCA preseason poll.

1A-D1 Girls

Three of the preseason top ten teams as listed by the KBCA will be located in the Valley Heights Sub-State including the fourth-ranked, host Mustangs.  Also vying to advance to state in that sub-state will be No. 5 Linn and No. 10 Centralia. Last season’s state-qualifier Hanover also will play in this sub-state after falling in the first round of the 2013 tournament to eventual runner-up Olpe.

1A-D2 Girls

In Division II, only two of the eight Sub-State sites will feature multiple teams ranked in the KBCA preseason top ten. Norwich, ranked fourth in the preseason poll, will host a Sub-State that includes No. 9-ranked South Barber. In addition, defending champion and top-ranked Ingalls will play at the Rolla Sub-State along with No. 8 Fowler.
