On Monday, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) released sub-state assignments for girls and boys basketball and regional assignments for wrestling.

6A Boys

Of the four Sub-State sites, the Blue Valley West Sub-State appears to be the strongest. Four of the top ten teams ranked in the KBCA preseason top 10 will be a part of this Sub-State; including defending 6A champion and No. 1 Blue Valley Northwest and the reigning 5A champs, second-ranked Shawnee Mission South. This Sub-State site also includes the host Blue Valley West Jaguars ranked No. 4 to start the season and No. 8 Blue Valley North. Blue Valley West finished second in the 2013 6A state tournament.

The Junction City Sub-State also includes four teams ranked in the KBCA top 10; No. 5 Lawrence Free State, No. 7 Wichita East, No. 9 Topeka High, and No. 10 Washburn Rural. This site also features a deep and talented Wichita Southeast team.

Only the Maize Sub-State does not include a team ranked in the KBCA preseason top 10.

5A Boys

In Class 5A, No. 1 Topeka Highland Park as well as No. 2 Lansing have been placed in the Topeka Seaman Sub-State. Highland Park finished as the Class 4A runner-up to Ottawa a season ago, while Lansing was the 5A runner-up to Shawnee Mission South. Mill Valley (No. 5) and Shawnee Heights (No. 8) round out the teams ranked in the preseason poll that will complete at Topeka Seaman.

4A-D1 Boys

The split of Class 4A into two division results in eight, four-team Sub-State tournaments in each division. The Basehor-Linwood Sub-State should immediately grab attention as preseason top-ranked KC Piper and the No. 3 host Bobcats will battle for the state tournament berth. Two other Sub-State tournaments will include two teams ranked in the KBCA preseason rankings. At De Soto, No. 2 KC Sumner Academy will have to get past new 4A member No. 5 Bishop Miege, and at El Dorado the No. 8 host Wildcats will complete with No. 6 Andover Central.

4A-D2 Boys

In Class 4A Division II, last year’s state third-place finisher Andale will host a Sub-State that also includes No. 5 Wichita Trinity and No. 7 Clearwater. The Andale Indians are ranked second to begin the season behind three-time defending 3A champion Scott City.

Class 3A Boys

There will be a new champion in Class 3A as Scott City has moved up to 4A Division II. The Beavers have won the past three 3A titles. The favorite may be Wichita Collegiate as the Spartans sit atop the KBCA preseason rankings. Collegiate will compete in the Eureka Sub-State along with Wichita Independent a 3A state qualifier from a season ago. The Marion Sub-State includes three teams listed in the preseason top 10 including No. 2 Hesston, No. 6 Sacred Heart, and No. 10 Southeast of Saline.

2A Boys

In Class 2A, both the Berean Academy and Yates Center Sub-States will each feature three teams ranked in the KBCA preseason top 10. At Berean, the host Warriors are ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll and will compete against last season’s third place finisher No. 7 Moundridge and No. 10 Hillsboro.

At Yates Center, No. 2 St. Mary’s Colgan makes the move down a class after reaching the 3A tournament in each of the past two seasons.  Also slotted to play at Yates Center are No. 5 Oswego and No. 6 West Elk. Oswego reached the 2A state tournament last season before falling to eventual runner-up Meade.

1A-D1 Boys

With defending champion St. John moving up to Class 2A, the Centralia Panthers are the preseason favorite in Class 1A Division I. The Panthers will play in a Sub-State at Blue Rapids that also includes the host No. 5 ranked Valley Heights Mustangs and No. 6 Hanover.

The other Sub-State to watch in Division I will be located at Quinter where No. 3 Stockton, No. 4 Hoxie, and No. 10  Thunder Ridge will compete for the state tournament spot.

1A-D2 Boys

In Division II, defending champion and top-ranked Axtell will play Sub-State at Blue Valley Randolph. The Eagles will compete in a Sub-State that also features No. 4 Baileyville B&B. Elsewhere, No. 2 Wallace County and No. 6 Dighton have both been assigned to the Tribune Sub-State, while last season’s state-runner-up No. 5 Fowler will compete in the Rolla Sub-State with No. 7 Ashland.
