We have reached the state semifinals in the 11-Man classes of Kansas high school football, and the championship games of the 8-Man classes will be played at Fischer Field in Newton this Saturday. Kpreps will continue to post state rankings throughout the playoffs culminating in our final poll after the state champions are crowned. Derby advanced to the state semifinals for the fifth time in the past six seasons with a 55-20 win at Manhattan. The top-ranked Panthers have come up short in those prior four sub-state appearances, but will look change that on Friday against No. 5 Garden City. Shawnee Mission East moves up a spot to No. 2 this week after a 20-13 win over Olathe East. The Lancers will host new No. 3 Olathe North which beat Lawrence Free State for the second time this season. Free State drops to No. 4 this week after finishing their season with a 9-2 mark.
Salina South is the new No. 1 in Class 5A as the Cougars slipped by Bishop Carroll 21-19 to stop the Golden Eagles’ win streak at 23 games. Carroll’s attempt at the tying two-point conversion was caught out-of-bounds by Tory Smith. Blue Valley West moves up to No.3 after taking advantage of six Bishop Miege turnovers in knocking off the previously No. 2 ranked Stags, 38-24. Miege drops to No. 5 this week with the loss, one spot behind Blue Valley which shutout Mill Valley 38-0.
Despite trailing at halftime, Holton won the No. 1 versus No. 2 match-up by beating Andale 24-14. The Wildcats and Indians remain in those respective spots this week after their quarterfinal showdown. Buhler moves into the No. 3 spot this week after beating Topeka Hayden 27-18. The Crusaders host top-ranked Holton in the west semifinal this week. Paola is up one spot to No. 4 after beating KC Piper 27-21. The Panthers will host new No. 5 Coffeyville-Field Kindley, which enters the poll after surprising last week’s No. 3 Baldwin, 35-27.
Beloit trailed Sedgwick 28-14 in the second quarter before rallying for a 66-41 shootout win. The Trojans remain at No. 1 in Class 3A and will travel to defending champion Scott City for a semifinal showdown this week. The Beavers beat then No. 2 Conway Springs 20-7 and are ranked fourth this week. Conway Springs drops to No. 5 in the poll this week after finishing their season at 11-1. On the east side of the bracket, No. 2 Rossville and No. 3 Silver Lake will meet in the state semifinals for the seventh time since 2002. Silver Lake has won each of those prior semifinal meetings.
In Class 2-1A, Centralia remains on top of the poll with a 36-0 shutout of Olpe. The only change in this week poll comes at No. 2 as Meade switches places with No. 3 La Crosse. The Buffaloes shut out traditional power Smith Center 28-0, while La Crosse won a wild 12-7 showdown with No. 4 Oakley. Lyndon remains at No. 5 this week after winning at Troy, 37-8.
The championship match-ups are set for each of the eight-man divisions as No. 1 Osborne will take on No. 2 Hodgeman County in the Division I final. In the Division II final, it will be the top two teams in our poll all season squaring off in Newton as No. 1 Baileyville B&B will take on No. 2 Sharon Springs-Wallace County.
