The Kpreps fans got this one correct. Their choice for the Kpreps Game of the Week featured Maize South (6-1) at Hesston (7-0).
It pitted a stingy Maverick defense that came in surrendering less than ten points per game against a Hesston offense that averaged 49 points per game and featured one of the state’s best backs in Ryan Schadler.
The teams played a scoreless first half with Maize South driving deep into Hesston territory several times only to be stopped on downs. On the night, the Mavericks were denied points on six drives inside the Swather 20-yard line.
Finally late in the third quarter, Chase Bell came in and scored on a 33-yard touchdown run to put the Mavericks up 7-0.
Hesston responded with Schadler who quickly broke a 69-yard touchdown run to pull within 7-6.
Bell would tack on another touchdown in the fourth quarter to lift the Mavericks to a 14-6 win. He finished with more than 150 yards rushing on the night.

In Class 6A, No. 4 Gardner-Edgerton scored on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jared Hobby to Jaylon Radel with just under two minutes remaining to give the Blazers a 29-26 win over No. 5 Olathe North.
The thing is, the ball wasn't even intended for Radel, but another receiver in an attempt to convert a fourth-and-8.
Olathe North led for much of the game and took a 26-14 lead after a third quarter interception return for a score by Jesse Kendricks.
While the Eagle defense bottled up Traevohn Wrench to just 75 yards rushing, Hobby passed for more than 320 yards and four touchdowns, but he was intercepted five times.
Gardner-Edgerton clinched the district championship with the win, while Olathe North will have to beat rival Olathe South next week to reach the playoffs.

In the final scheduled showdown between 8-Man powers, Baileyville B&B defeated rival Hanover 34-22 to sew up the District 1 championship.
Hanover led 8-0 after the first quarter and 14-6 mid-way through the second quarter. But the Falcons tied the game at 14 at halftime and took control in the second half.
Baileyville B&B rode the right arm of senior quarterback Dustin Rottinghaus who completed 23 of 43 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Cameron Haug five times for 123 yards and a touchdown, Blake Deters ten times for 147 yards.
Rottinghaus upped his season total to 1,573 yards passing and 24 touchdowns. Deters extended his team lead in receiving yards to 674 and 13 touchdowns on 37 receptions, while Haug has 27 receptions for 554 yards and six scores.
Rottinghaus also led the Falcon ground game with 33 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Baileyville B&B’s only loss came in the season-opener to the top-ranked team in Eight-Man, Division I, Madison.
The Bulldogs were on the road on Friday at Peabody-Burns, and at least early it looked as if Madison was going to roll to another win. The Bulldogs led 28-0 after one quarter before the Warrior offense began to climb back in it.
Peabody-Burns cut the lead to 28-16 at halftime and then took a 32-28 lead after outscoring Madison 16-0 again in the third quarter.
Madison regained the lead 34-32 early in the fourth quarter on an Owen Reed touchdown run. But the Warriors would respond with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Braxton Kyle to Kevin Baatrup with just over two minutes remaining and hold on for a 40-34 upset victory.
Kyle, the Warrior junior quarterback, passed for 129 yards and four scores and Fred Winsor added 93 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore Clayton Philpott caught four passes for 78 yards and two scores. He also registered ten tackles, a sack, recovered two fumbles, and returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown.
Peabody-Burns took advantage of five Madison turnovers, but turned the ball over four times of its own.
Madison, Peabody-Burns, Lebo, and Centre-Lost Springs each carry a 4-1 district record into Week 9 action. Peabody-Burns will travel to Lebo, while Madison will host Centre with the respective winners earning playoff spots.

Liberal scored with a second remaining on the clock to top Goddard-Eisenhower 36-31.
The Redskins faced a second-and-10 from the Tiger 13-yard line with nine seconds remaining in the game and down 31-30.
Liberal quarterback Britton Abbott hit Trenton Hammond on a 13-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining on the clock to give the Redskins the lead. The two-point try failed, but Liberal escaped to host Bishop Carroll for the 5A District 8 championship next week.

Central Plains defeated Solomon for the third consecutive season 86-40 to win the District 5 title. The Oilers outscored the Gorillas 46-28 in the first half and pulled away with a 40-12 second half.
Central Plains’ sophomore quarterback Braeden Crites passed for more than 350 yards and seven touchdowns on the night. He also added more than 100 yards on the ground rushing.
Layne Bieberle caught 12 passes for more than 320 yards and the seven touchdowns.
Solomon, which entered Week 8 averaging 60 points per game, was led by Mason Demars who rushed for 212 yards and three scores.

Top-ranked Holton built a 21-7 halftime lead on Topeka Hayden and scored ten late points to secure a 31-14 win.
Hayden pulled within 21-14 on a touchdown pass from Jacob Head to Marcus Meier late in the third quarter.
Holton threatened mid-way through the final period, but had to settle for a Brenden Hampton 19-yard field goal and a 24-14 lead.
Ethan Holaday intercepted a Hayden pass on the ensuing possession giving Holton the ball inside the Hayden 15-yard line.
Hampton would eventually cash in from a yard out as Holton won 31-14.

Andover rallied from down 21-7 to beat Emporia and remain unbeaten.
Emporia scored late in the third quarter on a Tanner Taylor touchdown run that gave the Spartans a 21-7 lead.
The Trojans responded immediately as Miles Starks returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a score. Andover threatened again in the fourth quarter, but a bad snap caused the Trojans to face a fourth-and-17 from the Spartan 26-yard line.
Mike Lee decided his Trojans would go for it and Coen Rasmussen hit Eli Renoux on a 26-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.
Andover would complete their 21-point barrage with a short touchdown run by Steven Young with just over a minute remaining.
The Trojans will travel to Newton next week with the winner claiming the district championship.

Tonganoxie rallied from a 20-0 first-half deficit and held on for a dramatic 34-33 win over Jefferson West.
The Chieftain offense got on track in the second half as Tyler Ford tossed a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another to give Tonganoxie a 34-27 lead with just over three minutes remaining.
Jefferson West quarterback Ian Mullins tossed a short touchdown pass to Alex Brores with 40 seconds remaining to pull the Tigers within 34-33.
Instead of kicking the tying PAT, Jefferson West elected to go for the two-point conversion and the win, but Wyatt Miller was stopped short of the goal line giving Tonganoxie the win.
Ford passed for 160 yards and three touchdowns for the Chieftains.
