Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Garden City improved to 2-0 with a 77-6 blowout of Wichita North. The Buffaloes scored 28 points in the first quarter and 35 more in the second quarter to take command. The Buff defense scored on a pick-6 by Ryan Heiman and a fumble return for a touchdown by Jesus Rodriguez. Garden City forced seven North turnovers. North scored on an 80-yard run by Jacob Wassall.

Sophomore Zahmere Jackson passed for 104 yards and a touchdown as Wichita West defeated Wichita Southeast, 30-12. The Pioneers forced the Golden Buffaloes into five turnovers on the night, including a pick-6 by junior Robert Echols. Ronelle Slaughter led Southeast with 118 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Lawrence came up with a late stop of Olathe West quarterback Mason McGavran at the 8-yard line to hold on and defeat the Owls, 28-21. Olathe West drove the length of the field in the final three minutes after stopping the Lions on fourth-and-goal. Tyson Grammer passed for 176 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Lawrence. Topeka Highland Park transfer Tyrell Reed led Lawrence with 103 yards rushing on nine attempts.


Class 5A:

After losing 65 consecutive games, Topeka Highland Park is finding its way in the newly formed Meadowlark Conference. The Scots won its second straight game with a 48-29 decision over KC Schlagle. Highland Park led 18-15 at halftime before outscoring the Stallions 18-8 in the third quarter. Tre Richardson rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns, had five receptions for 252 yards and four scores, and returned a kickoff 65 yards for another score. Kei’Juan Johnson passed for 272 yards and four scores for Highland Park. Cameron Campbell rushed for 183 yards and two scores and Kameron Daboe added 151 yards and a touchdown for Schlagle.

Shawnee Heights picked up its first win of the season by doubling-up Lansing, 46-23. Junior Allen Baughman rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries to lead the T-Birds. Shawnee Heights rushed for more than 330 yards in the game.

Brooks Kappelmann passed for 436 yards and five touchdowns as Liberal blasted Emporia, 53-0. Kappelmann connected with Zayden Martinez five times for 210 yards and four touchdowns, and hit Israel Garcia-Rotolo eight times for 189 yards and another score. Trystian Juarez added 135 yards rushing as the Redskins put up 684 yards of total offense.

Goddard improved to 2-0 with a 30-7 win over Valley Center. The Lions scored 30 unanswered points after falling behind 7-0 after the first quarter. Junior quarterback Ashton Sell passed for 93 yards and threw touchdown passes to Jaden Cohens, Jake Jasnoski, and Mason Healy. Devin Mathes added 67 yards and a score on the ground, while Micah Johnson rushed for a team-high 70 yards.


Class 4A:

Basehor-Linwood held on to defeat KC Piper, 17-16, in a game that was voted by the fans as the Kpreps Game of the Week. Piper drove to inside the Bobcat 2-yard line at the end of the game but time expired on the Pirates. Brady VanDonge passed for 94 yards and rushed for a touchdown, while Jekai Harris led Basehor-Linwood with 82 yards rushing and a score. Piper quarterback Logan Ladish rushed for a game-high 109 yards and passed for 205 yards and two scores.   

Independence scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to over take Mulvane for a 35-25 road victory. Junior Camdon Julian stepped in a quarterback and passed for 119 yards and two scores and added 150 yards rushing and three scores. Julian connected on touchdown passes to Hayden Smith and Jamason Jarnagin.

Tonganoxie evened its record at 1-1 with a 27-24 victory over Spring Hill. The Chieftains outscored the Broncos 21-14 in the second half to pull out the win. Colton Brusven rushed for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Tonganoxie. Sophomore quarterback Talon Langford passed for 194 yards and two scores for the Chieftains. Colton McKanna paced Spring Hill with 132 yards on the ground and two scores, while Draven Pipkin added 118 yards rushing.

Coffeyville-Field Kindley improved to 2-0 with a 32-27 win over Winfield. The Golden Tornado were once again led by sophomore Aaron Tunstall who rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Tunstall also returned an interception for a touchdown. Quarterback Axel Erne threw a touchdown pass to Amanie Luten to complete the scoring for Coffeyville.


Class 3A:

Holcomb scored in each quarter in rolling past Cimarron, 54-6. The Longhorns improved to 2-0 thanks to a consistent ground game that produced 412 rushing yards on Friday night. Damon Mesa led the team with 218 yards and three scores, while Khai Cosner added 100 yards and a touchdown. Mesa also added 77 pass yards and two scores – one of which went to Cosner.

Wellsville scored 34 points in the second and third quarters combined to pull away from Iola, 48-7. Senior Nash Money led the Eagles with 166 yards rushing and two scores. William Dorsey passed for 153 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Brody Lee who caught three passes for 68 yards. Dorsey and Dezmond Winton each added a touchdown run and Winton also caught a touchdown pass from Dorsey.

Parsons topped rival Labette County 39-28 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Junior quarterback Tra Mack passed for 308 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. All three of Jessie Jones’ receptions went for touchdowns totaling 149 yards. JJ Kendrick added eight catches for 136 yards and a score and Cam Kendrick added a short touchdown reception. Labette County’s Kendall Holtzman tossed a pair of touchdowns passes, while Matthew Boyle caught six passes for 93 yards and two scores.  

Pratt build a 21-0 halftime lead and finished off Hesston, 28-14. Six Greenback ball carriers combined for 218 rushing yards on the night with Ke’Rel Thompson and Carson Hoeme scoring touchdowns. Hoeme also passed for 88 yards and threw touchdown passes to Noah Riley and John Martinez.

Smoky Valley scored in each quarter as part of a 42-13 win over Haven. Karson Pihl passed for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Kade Blanchat caught one of Pihl’s scoring passes, while Vincent Pickering added the second. Justice Autry led the Viking ground game with 114 yards and a score, while Trystan Stambaugh added 84 yards and two touchdowns.


Class 2A:

Humboldt scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and used a strong defensive effort to shut out Caney Valley, 24-0. Trey Sommer led the Cubs with 151 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Blake Ellis added 55 yards. Sam Hull also picked up a Bullpup fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Sommer led the Cub defense with 11 stops. Friday marked just the second time Caney Valley had been shut out in the past 10 seasons.

In the Ellis County “Battle of Big Creek” rivalry, Thomas More Prep-Marian rolled over rival Ellis at Lewis Field Stadium, 35-0. TMP has shutout Ellis in back-to-back years and won six straight in the series. The Monarchs have outscored its opponents. 74-7. TMP is 10-3 since the start of ’21 with five shutout wins. The Monarchs are 2-0 for the first time since 2011. TMP’s Carson Liles had an interception on the game’s first play. TMP scored all its points in the first half. Kade Harris, a four-year starter, has exceeded 120 rushing yards in both contests after he moved from quarterback to running back this year.

Russell defeated Plainville, 27-7, in a Mid-Continent League game. Russell has outscored opponents, 66-14, with new coach Christien Ozores, last season’s defensive coordinator. Russell is 2-0 for the second straight season and third time in the last five years. Russell continues to move closer to its first winning season since 2003. Jacob Ney rushed for more than 100 yards, while quarterback Wyatt Middleton exceeded 200 total yards of offense. The first TD was a 44-yard pass from Middleton to Jace Peerman, per KRSL radio. This marked the first-ever matchup between Russell and Plainville in school annals, per Kansas Football History.

Council Grove has already doubled its win total from last season after a 23-0 victory against Mission Valley. Council Grove allowed the most points per game in 3A last year, though was a 2A Kpreps Potential Breakout Team this preseason. The Braves have enjoyed marked improvement and has its first back-to-back shutouts since 1992. CG has its first 2-0 start since 2017. Senior defensive end Brad Eldridge had a strip sack and safety in the end zone. He finished with nine tackles, two for loss and a sack. The Braves forced three turnovers. Ace Monihen finished 11 of 23 for 167 yards. Ethan Burton delivered six offensive touches for 70 yards. Kicker Loup Charlier, a foreign exchange student, continued to play well with three extra points and two touchbacks. The offensive line played well and paced Council Grove to 306 yards of total offense. Holden Ziegler finished with four pancake blocks and four tackles for loss. Key lineman Jaxon Buchman was not able to play.

Osage City defeated Burlington, 44-20, and improved to 2-0. Osage City and Council Grove are part of District 2 that is a combined 10-0. Senior Landon Boss completed 7 of 13 passes for 61 yards and a score. He delivered 15 carries for 212 yards and a pair of TDs. Junior Cooper Parsons finished with 17 carries for 93 yards. Burlington junior quarterback Hunter Reiling finished 11 of 15 for 163 yards with two scores versus zero interceptions.

Ellsworth has allowed just six points in two games en route to a 2-0 start. The Bearcats held Republic County’s single wing offense scoreless in a 32-0 victory. Junior Will Cravens delivered another big performance with 19 of 26 passing for 210 yards with three scores against no interceptions. Junior Layton Leiker finished with 10 catches for 110 yards. Cole Webber hauled in three catches for 46 yards and two TDs. Ellsworth was 4-16 in its last 20 games before the 2-0 start this year.

Chaparral is 2-0 with a pair of wildly different games. The Roadrunners, which delivered a big turnaround under coach JC Zahradnik last season, opened with a 12-6 overtime win against Medicine Lodge. In Week 2, the Roadrunners beat Wichita Trinity Academy, 54-41. Senior Austin Clark completed 11 of 20 passes for 189 yards with three scores against one interception. He delivered 10 carries for 181 yards and two TDs. Senior Aiden Guy finished with 15 carries for 117 yards and two scores. Trinity junior quarterback Harvey Zimmerman completed 32 of 49 passes for 314 yards with five scores against zero interceptions. Chaparral’s two well-known senior standouts of Jackson Swartz and Jack Francis each had solid games. The 6-foot-5 Swartz finished with three catches for 70 yards and a TD, along with two tackles for loss, a pass defended and 110 punt return yards. Francis paced with a team-high nine solo tackles, 12 overall, two TFLs and a pass defended.

Lakin improved to 2-0 with a 38-8 win against Syracuse. All of Lakin’s offensive yards came from non-seniors. Sophomore Armando Salcido delivered seven rushes for 151 yards and three scores. Junior Maddux Beltran finished with 11 carries for 92 yards and a TD. Sophomore Colter Oldham delivered nine rushes for 80 yards and a TD. Oldham paced the defense with nine tackles, three TFLS and a sack.


Class 1A:

Wabaunsee rolled over Northern Heights, 74-6. Freshman Cole Frank finished with 13 carries for 132 yards and a score. Junior Zach Frank rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Junior Miguel Hernandez finished with 116 punt return yards, including a pair of punt returns for touchdowns.

Jackson Heights ran 44 plays for 485 yards in a 50-21 win against Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The Cobras’ run-heavy offense delivered 426 rushing yards. Heights led 14-0 after the first quarter and 24-7 at halftime. Jackson Heights recorded two safeties and an interception return for a score from Devin Mock. Senior Alex Browning is 5-7, 155 and can squat 335. He delivered 16 carries for 196 yards and two scores. Jude Williams finished with five carries for 110 yards and a pair of TDs. Williams led the defense with 13 tackles.

Hutchinson Trinity bested Whitewater-Remington, 48-16, and improved to 2-0 in its move to 1A. Trinity led 7-0 after the first quarter and 28-8 at halftime. Eric Armour continued his big early season with 12 of 14 passing for 296 yards and four scores against zero interceptions. Trinity ran 37 plays for 403 yards. Blake Hammeke hauled in five catches for 132 yards and a 74-yard score. Aidan Armour finished with three catches for 84 yards and two TDs.

Oakley ended a nine-game losing streak against Phillipsburg with a 35-20 victory. Plainsmen senior quarterback Will Schmidt had a huge game with 4 of 5 passing for 35 yards, along with 28 carries for 240 yards and three scores. Junior Ace Plummer delivered 20 rushes for 96 yards. Sophomore Mason Jackson finished with eight tackles. Senior Landyn Plummer, Ace Plummer and senior Josiah Annis all delivered six. Per Kansas Football History, it is believed this is the first time Oakley has ever defeated Phillipsburg.


Class 8-man I

Argonia-Attica improved to 2-0 with a 45-0 win against Cedar Vale-Dexter. A&A scored 21 points in the first quarter and 24 in the second. Junior Dalton Morrison led with nine carries for 56 yards and three scores. Junior Thomas DeViney intercepted a pass. Sophomore Brody Bernsten made all five of his extra points. Senior Conner Harnden returned a punt for a score.

Hill City defeated WaKeeney-Trego, 62-14, and continued a strong start ahead of a key Week 3 game at Thunder Ridge. HC has averaged 60 points a game and is just outside the top-5 in Eight-Man, Division I. Junior Aiden Amrein completed 3 of 5 passes for 65 yards and a score. He delivered three carries for 82 yards and a TD. Four players had a rushing score, including junior Jaden Nuss, senior Trent Long and senior Kaleb Atkins. Overall, Atkins, known for his multi-faceted role, finished with 283 all-purpose yards, including 88 from a pick-six. Nuss and Amrein picked up player of the game honors.

Hoxie rolled Wheatland-Grinnell, 55-0, and set up a huge matchup against No. 1 Wichita County. Senior quarterback Brady Jones delivered 5 of 6 passing for 90 yards for two scores against no interceptions. Four players recorded a rushing TD. Senior Miles Baalman had three receptions for 73 yards and two scores. Junior Jonathan Mader picked off two passes, including a pick-six, and sophomore Trent Fenner was seven of eight on extra points.

Ness City, a three-win team the last two seasons, improved to 2-0 with a 12-8 victory against St. John. The Eagles trailed 8-6 in the fourth quarter before Danny Guzman had an eight-yard touchdown run. Guzman finished with 24 carries for 138 yards and a score. St. John had a slight 147-145 yardage edge. Guzman led with 14 tackles.

West Elk defeated Oxford, 64-16, behind huge performances from sophomore quarterback Trent Haag and sophomore quarterback Creyo Koop. Haag completed 7 of 9 passes for 212 yards and five scores against no interceptions. Koop rushed 13 times for 194 yards and a pair of TDs. Koop caught three passes for 96 yards and three TDs.

Madison has won 38 straight regular season/Week 9 bracket games, easily Kansas’ longest current run. The Bulldogs rolled over Marais des Cygnes Valley, 52-0. Hayden Helm completed 10 of 11 passes for 174 yards and a score. Bryson Turner delivered four carries for 30 yards, all for TDs. Turner also caught four passes for 88 yards and a score.


Class 8-man II

Kinsley defeated Otis-Bison, 46-0, and got two key players back from injury: quarterback Peyton Schmidt and running back Conner Chamberlain. Both missed the Week 1 loss to Victoria. Schmidt completed his only pass for a 49-yard touchdown to Cason Lemuz. Chamberlain, an all-league wide receiver/hybrid player last season, will likely be the main running back. He delivered 13 carries for 82 yards and two scores. Kinsley held Otis-Bison to 12 offensive yards.

Bucklin rolled over Kiowa County, 62-0. The Red Aces completed four passes, three for scores – one by sophomore Kolson Cook and two from sophomore Lucas Kirk. Cook, junior Andrew Bowman and sophomore Lucas Kirk all delivered rushing scores. Sophomore Kaden Tilley had two receiving TDs, while senior Garin Stimpert recorded one. All but three of the team’s 35 tackles came from non-seniors.

Osborne defeated Stockton, 54-0. Junior Doak Guttery completed 3 of 4 passes for 31 yards and two scores. Guttery, sophomore Clay Guttery, senior Connor Schurr, and sophomore Hunter Howell all had a rushing touchdown.


6-Man

Peabody-Burns earned its first ever six-man victory with a 54-6 victory against Chetopa. The Warriors scored 20 points in the first quarter and held a 28-6 margin in the second quarter. Junior Tanner Parks finished seven of nine passing for 123 yards with three scores against zero interceptions. Senior Colton Gossen delivered 10 rushes for 158 yards and three scores. Sophomore Cade Gossen and senior Kael Hutchison each tallied a rushing score.

Burrton continues to be one of Kansas’ early season surprises. The Chargers have tallied more than 70 points in its first two games. That includes a 74-50 win against Southern Cloud. Burrton had five football wins in the previous 10 seasons before this year.

In a matchup of Ingalls’ speed against Triplains-Brewster’s size, the Bulldogs improved to 2-0. Ingalls entered this year with 12 straight losses in Eight-Man, Division II. Ingalls won, 41-28.
