Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Olathe North rolled to a 26-6 victory over Sunflower League rival Olathe East. The Eagles were led by junior T.J. Porter’s 230 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Olathe North rushed for 342 yars in the game. Michael Canseco added 78 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. Quarterback Jason Scoma passed for 103 yards, including a touchdown to Joshua Parrish.

Blue Valley scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to top Eastern Kansas League rival Blue Valley Southwest, 28-21. Senior quarterback Trevor Brush passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Kansas State commit Andre Davis. Davis caught five balls for 135 yards. Junior running back John “JB” Price rushed for 187 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Price rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 22 touchdowns last season at Lincoln Prep (Mo.).

Dodge City opened the season with a 34-6 weather-shortened victory over Wichita West. Senior quarterback Kaden Garvelena accounted for four touchdowns for the Red Demons. Garvelena rushed for 67 yards and two scores and threw touchdown passes to Isaiah Taylor and Vincent Ortiz. The game was called in the third quarter due to weather.

Wichita Southeast scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters a part of a 24-7 victory over Wichita North. Sophomore Ronelle Slaughter rushed for 54 yards on eight attempts to lead the Golden Buffaloes. Slaughter’s classmate, Micah Fiscus, completed 11 of 15 passes for 81 yards. North scored on a touchdown pass from D.J. Fowler to Jacob Wassall.


Class 5A:

Goddard outscored Haysville Campus 14-0 in the third quarter to turn a 28-21 lead into a 42-21 advantage. The Lions went on to defeat the Colts, 56-35. Micah Johnson rushed for 125 yards and added a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Ashton Sell scored three rushing touchdowns for the Lions as part of his 47-yard night. Sell also passed for 45 yards including a touchdown to Devin Mathes. Sandler Bowyer also returned an interception for a score for Goddard. Campus rushed for 366 yards in the loss with Drake McPherson (153 yards, TD) and Remey Buckles (119 yards, 2 TD) leading the way.   

KC Sumner Academy scored twice in the second half as part of a 21-0 shutout of KC Washington. Senior Antonio Harrison rushed for 208 yards and all three Sabre touchdowns. The win was the first for Sumner over KC Washington since 2017.

Salina Central put up 357 yards of total offense in a 52-28 win over Salina South in the Mayor’s Cup. Senior Kenyon McMillan rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown to lead the Mustangs. Junior quarterback Gunnar Gross passed for 123 yards and two scores and added 64 rushing yards and three scores. Dez Gibson and Talan Gary each caught touchdown passes from Gross, who connected with six different receivers.

Valley Center held on to win at Newton, 21-17. Hornet junior quarterback Hank Welu only completed five passes, but two of them went for touchdowns. Daimont Mucker and Sam Eldridge each caught touchdown passes as Welu passed for 110 yards. Mucker also added 61 yards rushing and a score.


Class 4A:

Basehor-Linwood running back Jakai Harris scored two of his three rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to propel the Bobcats to a 47-42 win over Tonganoxie. The game went back-and-forth with Basehor-Linwood leading 21-13 at halftime. Brant Wilson returned the second half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and a 28-13 Bobcat lead. Tonganoxie scored twice in the third quarter to tie the game – the second on a Colton Brusven touchdown run. Basehor-Linwood responded with a Brady VanDonge touchdown run for a 34-28 lead. Tonganoxie got an Isaiah Holthaus interception for a touchdown for a 35-34 lead early in the fourth quarter. Harris then scored his second touchdown from midfield for a 40-35 lead, then followed that up with a short scoring run to lead 47-35. Harris rushed for 192 yards to go along with his three scores. VanDonge passed for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Brusven led Tonganoxie with 287 yards rushing and a score on 41 carries. Tyler Pankey added 52 yards on the ground and three touchdowns for the Chieftains.  

Aaron Tunstall scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in overtime to lift Coffeyville to an 8-0 victory over Mulvane. The Golden Tornado then held Mulvane out of the end zone on the Wildcats’ overtime series to preserve the win. Tunstall led the ‘Nado with 130 yards rushing on 19 carries.

KC Schlagle scored in each quarter in rolling past KC Harmon, 55-0. The Stallions rushed for 277 yards led by Cameron Campbell’s 104 yards and two scores. Kameron Daboe added 91 yards and two scores and pulled in a touchdown reception for Schlagle. Harmon was shutout for the seventh consecutive game. The Hawks haven’t scored in a game since November 1, 2019.


Class 3A:

Bishop Ward held Independence scoreless for three quarters and topped the Bulldogs, 36-14. Sophomore quarterback Aiden Milliren passed for 216 yards and two touchdowns. The Cyclones also rushed for 205 yards, led by Brice Johnson, Jr. (78 yards) and Rodereick Strong (70 yards). Camdon Julian led Independence with 149 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Iola rolled to a 35-7 victory over Osawatomie. Junior quarterback Landon Weide passed for 124 yards and two touchdowns – both going to Mac Leonard who had 46 receiving yards. Weide also added a rushing touchdown. Eleven Mustangs combined for 141 rushing yards.  

Halstead trailed Smoky Valley 24-20 entering the fourth quarter before the Dragons outscored the Vikings 22-16 in the fourth quarter for a 42-40 win. Halstead’s Skyler Greer rushed for 177 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Quarterback Tucker Divine passed for 169 yards and two scores – one to Owen Farmer and the other to Zain Maknojia. Justice Autry rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown to lead Smoky Valley.

Pratt scored 44 points in the second quarter in a 67-0 blowout of Larned. The Greenbacks rushed for 218 yards with John Martinez rushing for two touchdowns and J’air Johnson and Carson Hoeme each rushing for scores. Lineman Drake Van Scoyoc also rushed for a short touchdown. Hoeme and Noah Riley each returned interceptions for touchdowns for the Greenback defense.


Class 2A:

Council Grove, a one-win team in Class 3A last season, returned nearly its entire roster. The Braves opened with a 41-0 home victory against Central Heights. The victory ended a six-game losing streak and represented the Braves’ second victory in its last 16 contests. Junior outside linebacker/hybrid player Jay Johnson broke the school single-game record with three forced fumbles. This marked the team’s second-largest margin of victory since 2014. Sophomore Holden Ziegler had three fumble recoveries, which tied for the most in school annals, and had a pancake block on offense.

Sophomore quarterback Ace Monihan recorded 5 of 12 passing for 129 yards and two scores. Senior Jace Goodman rushed for a touchdown. Senior Ethan Burton, who has committed to D2 Arkansas Tech and is one of Kansas’ fastest players, delivered two catches for 85 yards and two scores, including a 56-yarder. Burton also delivered 23 passing and 18 rushing yards. Foreign exchange student Loup Charlier had a big game in his first football contest with five of six on extra points, averaged 52 yards a kick and an excellent 43 yards per punt on a pair of kicks.

Humboldt’s Blake Ellis rushed for 170 yards and his teammate, Trey Sommer, delivered 143 on the ground. The Cubs defeated Fredonia, 54-18. Humboldt has won six straight in the series.

Lakin rolled over Stanton County, 36-0. Standout sophomore Colter Oldham rushed for 86 yards, and Armando Salcido rushed for 77. Lakin has won six consecutive season openers under coach Chris Bamberger. Lakin received 246 total yards, all from non-seniors. Overall, Oldham finished with 163 all-purpose yards. Defensively, he led Lakin with eight tackles, a tackle for loss, and delivered a pick-six.

Sabetha had a top-10 3A defense last fall and dropped down a classification this year. The Bluejays opened with a quality 28-14 win against Perry-Lecompton. Jonathan Renyer rushed for 65 yards and two scores. This marked the second straight meeting between the squads. Sabetha lost 28-21 to the Kaws in the playoffs last year.

Holcomb stepped up two classes and defeated Liberal (5A), 34-20. Keegan Johnson threw touchdown passes to Damon Mesa and Manny Reyes for the Longhorns. Mesa rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown, while Khai Cosner rushed for two scores for Holcomb. Brooks Kappelmann passed for 262 yards and a touchdown for Liberal, while Trystian Juarez led the Redskins with 144 yards rushing and two scores.


Class 1A:

In a key Heart of America contest, Hutchinson Trinity defeated Sedgwick, 24-18. Trinity led 7-0 after the first quarter and 17-6 at halftime. Trinity actually ran eight fewer plays, was minus-1 in turnover margin, and had a lower third/fourth down efficiency than Sedgwick. Blake Hammeke opened with a 22-yard TD reception from Eric Armour. Moises Segoviano kicked a 31-yard field goal. Then, Hammeke caught a 25-yard pass from Armour. In the fourth quarter, Hammeke hauled in a 61-yard TD pass from Armour. Corey Crumrine, in his first start as Sedgwick’s varsity quarterback, completed 12 of 18 passes for 111 yards and a score.

Trinity moved down from Class 2A. Sedgwick graduated multiple key players, including Shrine Bowl quarterback Lance Hoffsommer, from a one-loss semifinalist team, the best in school history. Sedgwick led 1A in scoring offense with 48.9 points a contest last season.

Jefferson Co. North rolled to a 50-8 win over Pleasant Ridge in Northeast Kansas League action. The Chargers rushed for more than 400 yards on the night, led by Grady Noll’s 286 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries. Noll also returned an interception for a touchdown. Conner Keirns added 94 yards and a touchdown. JCN forced four Pleasant Ridge turnovers.  

Centralia defeated Valley Heights, 34-14, in an 11-man Twin Valley League contest. Drew Gibbs rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Trenton Talley rushed for a score and passed for another score. Valley Heights received 107 rushing yards from Jayden DeWalt.

Sacred Heart slipped by Wichita Trinity Academy, 20-19. Evan Bogart rushed for two touchdowns and Cameron Cleveland added another score. Harvey Zimmerman passed for 391 yards and two touchdowns for Wichita Trinity. Zimmerman connected with Donald Collier eight times for 187 yards and a score.


Class 8-man I

Lyndon moves into the rankings for the first time after a 20-14 win against Lebo in its inaugural eight-man game. Lebo was ranked No. 5 in Eight-Man, Division II. The game was tied at six heading into the final quarter. Lebo took a 14-6 lead on a TD pass from Landon Grimmett to Corey Reese. But Lyndon’s Evan Feuerborn returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a TD to tie the game at 14. Feuerborn broke the tie with a short TD run midway through the fourth quarter. He finished with 75 rushing yards and scored all three Tiger touchdowns.

Hoxie, expected to be a strong team in Eight-Man, Division I West, defeated WaKeeney-Trego, 64-22. Ryan Shaw rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns for Hoxie. Drew Bretz also delivered 105 yards on the ground. Senior Brady Jones, a first team all-state wide receiver last season, moved to quarterback. He finished seven of 11 for 113 yards with three touchdowns against no interceptions. Hoxie recorded 474 total yards.

Argonia-Attica defeated Norwich, 41-12, in a Heart of a Plains League rivalry game. Conner Harnden delivered 20 carries for 128 rushing yards and a pair of scores for Argonia-Attica. He also completed 3 of 5 passes for 92 yards with a score. After a scoreless first quarter, A&A took a 20-6 halftime lead and 28-12 after three quarters. A&A has won three straight Week 1 games, all against Norwich. The Titans have won all three contests by at least 29 points.

West Elk defeated Udall, 50-0. West Elk’s Creyo Koop picked up after a huge freshman season in football and wrestling. He rushed 10 times for 103 yards and three scores. Maddex Moreno rushed for 60 yards. WE scored 24 points in the first quarter and 20 in the second. All of West Elk’s positive rushing yards (167 total) came from sophomores. In 11 career games, Koop has 27 rushing scores and 1,385 yards.

Goessel, a back-to-back Division I quarterfinalist, started with another impressive game in a 42-14 win versus Bennington. Goessel scored the game’s first 20 points and opened with a 42-6 lead. Goessel had 352 total yards, 19 more than Bennington. Jake Wiens had 16 carries for 139 yards and two scores. Grant Bryant had six carries for 101 yards and two TDs.

In Elkhart’s first-ever eight-man game, the Wildcats opened with a 56-6 win. Kage Ralstin rushed for 116 yards. He completed 12 of 23 passes for 163 yards and a score. Elkhart passed for 173 yards and rushed for 198. Elkhart won in Week 1 in 2018.

After a scoreless first quarter, Ness City defeated Central Plains, 26-8. Ness City led 6-0 at halftime and 14-0 after three. The Eagles had a 222-135 yardage edge. Kaleb Pavlu caught a 10-yard pass from Diego Guzman in the first quarter. For the second, Diego Guzman delivered a one-yard scoring run. In the third, Pavlu caught a 14-yard pass from Guzman. Ness City pushed the lead to 26-0 on a 40-yard punt return from Danny Guzman. Danny Guzman picked off two passes. The Eagles have won four straight season openers.

In a game played Thursday night before an official shortage, Hill City defeated Osborne, 58-12. Junior Aiden Amrein completed 5 of 11 passes for 162 yards and two scores. Hill City’s outstanding three-man backfield trio of Amrein, senior Kaleb Atkins and junior Jaden Nuss rushed for five total touchdowns. Hill City went to the Division I state semifinals last year.


Class 8-man II

For the second straight year, Bucklin defeated Spearville, 24-20, in a close Southern Plains Iroquois Week 1 contest. Sophomore Lucas Kirk completed 13 of 15 passes for 84 yards and a TD. Andrew Bowman picked up 14 carries for 89 rushing yards for the Red Aces. Overall, Bowman delivered 163 all-purpose yards. Junior Drew Ellis blocked a punt and picked up a safety.

Beloit St. John’s-Tipton’s Chance Jermark finished with 121 rushing yards in a 40-8 victory versus Mankato-Rock Hills. Sophomore Tyson Gates stepped in at quarterback with 5 of 12 passing for 96 yards. BSJT led 16-0 after the first quarter. The Blujays rushed 48 times for 276 yards and five scores.

Stafford opened the Mitchell Engelken era with a 50-0 victory against Fairfield. He has coached at a variety of places as an assistant, including Osborne. Engelken was a former first team all-state player at Baileyville B&B. Stafford senior quarterback Dylan Gantz completed 11 of 23 passes for 243 yards with five scores against one interception. Senior Colson Minks caught seven passes for 159 yards and four TDs.

Sylvan-Lucas opened with a comeback 42-28 victory versus Lincoln in Northern Plains League action. Lane Homewood threw for two TD passes and rushed for two more. Sylvan-Lucas delivered 355 yards of total offense, per Russell Radio. The Mustangs have posted six straight winning seasons.

Logan-Palco opened with a 60-14 win against Stockton. Sophomore Rhett Kats completed nine of 19 passes for 157 yards with three touchdowns against no interceptions. Senior Austin Stohs caught four passes for 55 yards.


6-Man

In a highly surprising result against two new six-man teams, Tescott defeated No. 5 Peabody-Burns, 43-6. Tescott’s Carter Peters rushed for 115 yards. His teammate, quarterback Nate Ehlers, delivered 97 rushing yards. Senior Blake Green completed eight of 19 passes for 81 yards with two scores against no interceptions.

Wetmore won its inaugural 6-Man game by shutting out Southern Cloud, 58-0. Dierk Hanzlicek passed for 79 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 44 yards and two scores, and caught a 35-yard touchdown pass. Kyler Wommack added two rushing scores and a passing touchdown.
