The Kpreps Friday First Look provides our impressions of some of the game’s most notable games and performance from Friday night’s action!

Class 6A

Blue Valley rallies to top Bishop Miege, 31-28

Michael Solomon scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with :23 seconds remaining to lift Blue Valley to a 31-28 victory over Bishop Miege.

The Tigers entered the game ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, while Miege is the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

Bishop Miege scored the only points of the third quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Burch to build a 28-17 lead.

But the Tigers would claw back in the fourth.

Quarterback Greyson Holbert scored from 1-yard out midway through the final quarter to pull Blue Valley to within 28-23.

Solomon later added the go-ahead touchdown with :23 seconds left.

Miege attempted a 47-yard field goal on the final play, but it was blocked.

Solomon rushed for 127 yards to go along with his game-winning score. Holbert added 107 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He also passed for 116 yards and a score to Andre Davis. Davis caught six balls for 95 yards.

Bishop Miege quarterback Mac Armstrong completed 28 of 36 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown. Burch led the Stag offense with 180 rushing yards and three scores.

Blue Valley Northwest holds off Blue Valley North

Blue Valley Northwest improved to 6-0 with a 35-21 win over Blue Valley North.

The Huskies led 14-0 at halftime and the two teams traded scores in the second half.

Quarterback Mikey Pauley threw four touchdown passes – two to Nick Cusick – to lead the Northwest offense. Pauley also threw touchdown passes to Max Muehlberger and Stephen Witter.

Pauley also rushed for a score in the game.

Blue Valley North quarterback reportedly established a new state record for career completions with 636, surpassing former Shawnee Mission North quarterback Will Schneider (635).

Martin threw two touchdown passes to Mekhi Miller and one to Lucas Bullock during Friday’s game.

The Mustangs have now dropped three straight games since a 3-0 start.

Wichita East blows out Garden City, 50-7

Wichita East won for the second consecutive week in impressive fashion. The Blue Aces routed Garden City, 50-7, on Friday night.

It was reportedly Wichita East’s first-ever win over Garden City.

Sophomore quarterback DaeOnte Mitchell had a big night in accounting for four touchdowns for the Blue Aces’ offense. Mitchell passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing score.

East evened its record at 3-3 with the victory, while Garden City fell to 4-2.

Washburn Rural hands No. 4 Manhattan first loss

Washburn Rural traveled to Manhattan and knocked off the fourth-ranked Indians, 21-14.

Rural scored on a short touchdown run by quarterback Branton DeWeese in the fourth quarter to take a 21-14.

The Junior Blues defense then intercepted Manhattan on three consecutive possessions to secure the victory.

DeWeese also threw a touchdown pass to Robby Bolin and Ma’Kentis Adams added a score run. The Junior Blues improved to 5-1 with the victory and Manhattan fell to 5-1.

Class 5A

Bishop Carroll holds of Kapaun in the Holy War

Not only is it a rivalry game, but this year’s Holy War took on added significance with Bishop Carroll entering No. 1 in Class 5A and Kapaun Mt. Carmel No. 2.

The game itself lived up to the billing, but in the end the result was the same as it had been the previous 24 meetings – a Bishop Carroll victory.

Final score: Bishop Carroll 27, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 21.

The Golden Eagles and Crusaders were tied at 14-14 at halftime and 21-21 down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

With Bishop Carroll driving, Kapaun’s Isaac Schmitz intercepted a Chase Smarsh pass at the 13-yard line thwarting a Golden Eagle scoring attempt and keeping the game tied at 21 with 4:38 remaining.

But Kapaun was unable to move the ball on the ensuing possession and had to punt.

Bishop Carroll got the ball and turned to running back Jadonn Williams who burst up the middle for along run down to the Kapaun 7-yard line. One play later, Williams scored to put Bishop Carroll up 27-21 with 2:41 remaining.

Kapaun mounted a drive to midfield, then Hamilton his Schmitz over the middle on a long pass to the Carroll 30-yard line with under a minute to go.  

Shortly after, Hamilton lofted a pass into the end zone where he had a receiver, but the was deflected off of his receivers’ hands into the air where it was intercepted by Bishop Carroll.

Kapaun held the advantage in the first half as Omari Elias scored two of this three touchdowns with powerful running.

Bishop Carroll tied the game just before halftime as Smarsh lofted a ball into the end zone where Matt Holthusen made an incredible one-handed sliding catch to knot the game at 14.

Carroll took control right out of the locker room as Smarsh sprinted 64 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half.

Elias added a bruising 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to culminate a drive in which Kapaun converted three fourth-down plays.

Carroll improves to 5-1 on the season, while Kapaun falls to 5-1.

The game was moved from Stryker Sports Complex to Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium in anticipation of the added significance.

Maize shuts down Maize South, 49-27

Maize won its second in a row and improved to 5-1 with a dominant 49-27 victory versus rival Maize South.

Both teams have been ranked in the top-5 in 5A, and Maize South is currently fifth in 5A. Maize has won five in a row and all but one of the meetings have come by at least 22 points. Maize dominated the contest and led 21-0 after the first quarter.

Avery Johnson finished 5 of 7 for 129 yards with a score. Daeshaun Carter delivered 24 carries for 206 yards and three scores. Justin Stephens had four catches for 124 yards and a TD. Maize South’s Evan Cantu, the state’s top 11-man rusher, has 40 carries for 232 yards and two scores. Maize South ran 72 plays, 31 more than Maize.

There are currently zero undefeated and six 5-1 teams in 5A West: Hays High, Andover, Kapaun, Maize South, Maize and Bishop Carroll. Plus, there are three 4-2 teams.

Hays handles Dodge City, 39-17

Hays High earned a critical, 39-17, comeback win against Dodge City in a Western Athletic Conference game at Memorial Stadium.

Dodge City led 10-7 after a 50-yard field goal from Emmanuel Aguilar before Hays High scored points on its next six possessions.

Hays High senior quarterback Jaren Kanak, a Clemson commit, cleared 140 rushing yards and rushed for three TDs.

Senior linebacker Gavin Meyers, the school’s all-time leading tackler, had a big game on defense.

Hays improved to 5-1, while Dodge City dropped to 4-2.

The Indians likely controls its own destiny for the No. 1 seed in 5A West with two titanic games the following two weeks: home versus Maize South (5-1) and at Wichita Northwest (4-2, defending three-time 5A runners-up).

Salina Central upsets Andover Central

Salina Central delivered a 21-14 upset victory versus Andover Central, ranked No. 2 in 4A.

Parker Kavanaugh also delivered a three-yard touchdown run that broke a 14-14 tie with 6:42 left in the third quarter, per The Salina Journal.

Logan Losey had four catches, two for scores. One of them was a great outstretched catch down the middle.

The Mustangs improved to 4-2 with three straight wins, including 51-14 at Arkansas City in Week 5.

Salina Central finished 1-8 last fall, including a 20-point defeat to Andover Central.

Mill Valley outscores Olathe West, 47-32

Mill Valley raced out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and then held off 6A No. 5 Olathe West, 47-32.

Olathe West pulled to within 26-18 at halftime on an Anthony Favrow touchdown run, but Reice Kennedy would answer for Mill Valley in the third quarter to put the Jaguars up 33-18.

Once again, the Owls would pull within a score as Mason McGavran rushed for one of his two touchdowns to cut the Jaguar lead to 33-25.

Mill Valley regained a two-score advantage about a minute later as Hayden Jay connected with Aidan Jacobs for a long touchdown pass and a 40-25 lead.

Jay passed for 295 yards and four touchdowns on the night. He connected with Sean Allerheiligen three times for 93 yards and two scores. Jay also found Kendrick Jones six times for 87 yards and a touchdown, and Jacobs had 79 receiving yards and a score.

Kennedy led the Mill Valley ground game with 215 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

McGavran rushed for 110 yards and two scores and added 196 yards passing and a touchdown.

Class 4A

Buhler outruns McPherson, 42-30

Fifth-ranked Buhler outscored No. 3 McPherson 21-6 in the second half en route to a 42-30 victory on Friday night.

The Crusaders were led on the ground by another huge night from senior Sam Elliott. Elliott rushed 30 times for 260 yards and three touchdowns. His 52-yard sprint with 2:28 remaining in the game gave the Crusaders a 42-24 lead and essentially put the game out of reach.

Buhler scored first in the game on a 60-yard run by Elliott for a 7-0 lead.

McPherson would then score the game’s next 17 points to grab a 10-point lead after the first quarter. The Bullpup scoring started with Jayden Dukes returning the ensuing kickoff following Elliott’s touchdown 81-yards for a score of his own.

Blaise Hoover kicked a field goal and Aiden Hoover rushed for a short touchdown to put the Bullpups up 17-7 after the first quarter.

Elliott pulled Buhler close with a 9-yard run in the second quarter. Then the Buhler defense would come up with a huge play as Bo Van Bruggen forced a McPherson fumble and Tanner Tustian returned it for a touchdown and a 21-17 lead.

McPherson scored before half as Hunter Alvord hit Dukes for a long touchdown and a 24-21 lead at the break.

Buhler quarterback Bradley Neill’s touchdown run was the only score of the third quarter and put the Crusaders up 28-24. Neill added another short score midway through the fourth as Buhler pushed the lead to 35-24.

Class 3A

Cheney holds off Holcomb 25-14

Cheney remained unbeaten with a key district win, 25-14 over Holcomb.

The Cardinals led 12-0 at halftime on a Harrison Voth touchdown run and a Voth touchdown pass to Luke Grace. Quincy Thomas scored on a short touchdown run in the third quarter to push the Cardinal lead to 19-0.

After a Holcomb score trimmed the lead to 19-6, Thomas answered again with an 18-yard run to put the Cardinals up 25-6 in the fourth quarter.

Cheney moves to 6-0 with the win and has games against Larned (3-3) and Nickerson (0-6) remaining.

Prairie View escapes Iola on late FG

Prairie View’s Peyton Doty kicked a 25-yard field goal with seven seconds left to cap a fourth quarter comeback for a 23-20 win versus Iola.

The Buffaloes trailed 20-6 entering the fourth quarter, but got some help when an errant snap set up the Buff offense deep in Iola territory. Dakota Stogsdill’s touchdown run pulled Prairie View to within 20-12 midway through the fourth quarter.

Prairie View then tied the game on a long halfback pass for a touchdown.

Doty then kicked the winning field goal to send the Buffs to 5-1 on the season.

Andale nearly hangs 100 on Trinity

Andale won its 31st consecutive game in dominating fashion, 96-6, over Wichita Trinity Academy.

The Indians scored 43 points in the first quarter, 31 more in the second, and 14 in the third.

Andale rushed for 362 yards and nine rushing touchdowns on the night. The Indians only completed 2 of their 4 pass attempts.

Riley Marx, Gage Prosser, and Owen Eck each rushed for two touchdowns in the victory.

Class 2A

No. 5 Wellsville rolls to a dominant 35-12 at No. 3 Osage City

Fifth-ranked Wellsville traveled to No. 3 Osage City and ran away with a 35-12 victory in the Kpreps Fan’s Choice for statewide Game of the Week.

Nash Money rushed for 200 yards on 30 carries and score three touchdowns as the Eagles used a physical ground game to run through the host Indians. Wellsville rushed for 391 yards on the night.

The Eagles scored first on the game’s opening possession as Money broke free up the middle for an 18-yard score. By the middle of the second quarter, the Eagles pushed the lead to 13-0 as William Dorsey connected with Brody Lee on a reverse pass for a 26-yard touchdown.

Osage City got on the board in the third quarter on a Landon Boss short touchdown run to pull within 13-6.

Money then responded with a 7-yard run for a 21-6 lead. Dylan Schnoor and Money would later add scoring runs in the fourth quarter as the lead swelled to 35-6.

Osage City scored with :31 seconds remaining as Tyler Sage threw a touchdown pass to Kaden Kirkpatrick. Sage came on at quarterback for Boss who left the game in the third quarter.

The Wellsville defense held Osage City to 23 rush yards on 17 attempts.

Wellsville improves to 6-0 with the victory, while Osage City falls to 5-1.

TMP posts fourth consecutive shutout with win over SW Heights

Thomas More Prep-Marian junior quarterback Kade Harris entered Friday with 339 passing yards, 532 rushing yards and 57 tackles, all team highs by a significant margin. Harris, in his third year as the Monarch starting quarterback, hurt his ankle in Week 5 against Ellis.

At the beginning of the week, TMP planned to not have Harris for its home contest versus Southwestern Heights. Harris didn’t practice Monday through Wednesday, though improved his health. Plus, Harris said he wanted to play.

Harris didn’t play defense or run the ball, but he delivered a big game passing in a 41-0 home district victory at Lewis Field Stadium.

TMP continued its school record with its fourth straight shutout.

“They just want it bad,” coach Jay Harris said. “They are just going after it. They are locked in right now, want this season bad, and they are just shutting things down.”

Before this year, the Monarchs had never even delivered three consecutive shutouts in at least 50 seasons.

TMP won its fourth straight contest and improved to 5-1, 3-0 in District 7 play. The Monarchs will travel to Cimarron (5-1, 3-0) in a contest that should decide the district title.

“We just want to keep it rolling,” senior running back Bryce Seib said. “We’ve got a tough game next week.”

Harris completed 10 of 12 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns. He threw for the second-most passing yards in his career. Plus, Seib took the majority of the carries without Harris and finished with 16 carries for 79 yards and three TDs. Seib set or tied career highs in all three categories.

“He showed that he can throw too,” Seib said. “He is not just a runner.”

The game was scoreless after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Seib scored on a four-yard run, then Harris threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to senior Jace Wentling. Harris found senior Andrew Schwartz on an impressive 54-yard TD pass. In the third quarter, Seib tallied three- and 12-yard runs. SW Heights had two scoring chances in the first half, though missed a 26-yard field goal. SWH reached TMP’s red zone just before intermission, though ran out of time.

“Their guys up front do a good job of getting a push, and their backs run hard,” SWH coach Matt Bell said. “They have got a couple fast kids on the outside they can throw the ball to.”

Sophomore linemen Kendall Walker and Kolton Hagans delivered a big game, especially in run stuffing. They both finished with multiple tackles for loss.

“They just love it in there, and it’s fun to have those guys that want to be in there battling in the trenches,” coach Harris said.

Class 1A

Inman continues its dominance

Second-ranked Inman improved to 6-0, 5-0 in District 3 with a 60-0 blanking of Ell-Saline.

The Teutons continue to be the lone Kansas team to not allow a touchdown this season.

On Senior Night, the Teutons had its fifth shutout this year by dominating the Cardinals.

Inman’s only points allowed came in a field goal in a 48-3 road win versus Plainville in Week 5. Inman has outscored teams, 354-3.

Smith Center escapes Plainville, 28-25

Third-ranked Smith Center, which will play host to Inman at Hubbard Stadium in Week 8, improved to 6-0, 4-0, by holding off Mid-Continent League rival Plainville, 28-25.

Smith Center has won 14 straight regular season/Week 9 bracket games. The Redmen have won eight straight in the series, though the last three meetings are decided by a combined 16 points. Plainville is 3-3.

Smith Center’s game with Inman will very likely decide the top-two spots in the district.

8-Man Football

Marmaton Valley tops Oswego 106-98 in record-setting shootout

The Marmaton Valley Wildcats and Oswego Indians combined to set a new state record for combined points in a single 8-Man game on Friday night.

Marmaton Valley’s Quincy Adams scored on a 33-yard touchdown with :06 seconds left to break a 98-98 tie and the Wildcats held on for the 106-98 win.

The 204 combined points broke the previous single-game record for combined points of 184 set in Onaga’s 114-68 win over Valley Falls in 2016. Oswego’s 98 points by a losing team also sets a state mark previously held by Logan which scored 82 in an 84-82 loss to Natoma back in 2007.

The Iola Register’s Reece Becker reports that Adams rushed for 209 yards and scored five touchdowns in the win for Marmaton Valley. Senior quarterback Garrett Henderson completed 21 of 28 passes for 249 yards and three scores.

Freshman Jaedon Granere had 11 receptions for 128 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 135 yards and five scores.

Marmaton Valley improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in District 1 under first-year coach Max Mickunas.

Behind Tuner, Madison outruns Chase County

After falling behind early, No. 2 Madison scored 36 points in the second quarter and eventually held off Chase County, 66-50.

Bryson Turner rushed for a game-high 365 yards and eight touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Bulldogs.

Chase County got off to a good start and led Madison by 16 twice in the first half. That’s when Turner got going.

Turner rushed for five touchdowns in the second quarter alone to help Madison rally to a 44-36 halftime lead.

Casey Helm’s touchdown run in the third quarter put Madison up 52-36. From there on out, when ever Chase County would pull within one score, Madison would answer.

Helm added 69 yards and the rushing touchdown for Madison and Drew Stutesman rushed for 88 yards and a score.

Mitch Budke continues to put up incredible stats week after week. Budke rushed for 164 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 73 yards and another score.

Both teams entered Friday’s showdown with identical 5-0 records.

Sedan proves too much for Yates Center

The Sedan Blue Devils won the battle of unbeaten teams in Eight-Man, Division I, District 1 by handling Yates Center, 56-8.

Brec Long and Dameion Hatten had big nights as Sedan jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Blue Devils extended their lead to 34-0 before Yates Center scored in the final minute before halftime.

Sedan led 42-8 at the break, then added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to end the contest.

Long rushed for 170 yards and two scores and added 188 yards passing and five touchdowns. Hatten added three catches for 106 yards and two scores.

No. 2 Thunder Ridge rallies to top No. 4 Osborne

In a key Eight-Man, Division II game in District 4, second-ranked Thunder Ridge pulled off a close 44-34 home win versus No. 4 Osborne.

Osborne led this game 34-20 after three quarters before the Longhorns outscored the Bulldogs, 24-0, in the fourth. Osborne also held a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and 26-20 at halftime.

In the previous two years, Osborne won both games by six points apiece.

Thunder Ridge is 6-0, 5-0, and Osborne is 4-2, 3-1.

Frankfort sends Hanover to a third-straight loss

Frankfort defeated Hanover for the first time since 2011 with a 48-8 win on Friday night.

The Frankfort defense was the story holding Hanover to 92 yards of total offense and forcing two turnovers. The Wildcats played without starting quarterback Braelen Stallbaumer.

Meanwhile, Frankfort got a huge night from Ty Smith. Smith rushed 31 times for 223 yards and four touchdowns. Ethan Armstrong, Jett Keller, and Brock Armstrong also rushed for scores.

Hanover has now lost three consecutive games for the first time since 2011.

Meade picks up impressive win at Wichita County

Meade won its eighth straight game and improved to 6-0 with a 49-24 road win versus No. 5-ranked Leoti-Wichita County.

The Buffs are 6-0, 3-0 in District 7.

Meade has scored at least 40 points in every contest. Last year, Meade was 4-3, 1-3 in district play in its first season of eight-man football.

Budklin rolls to district win over Minneola

In Eight-Man, Division II, Bucklin continued its historic year and improved to 6-0, 3-0 in District 7 play with a 68-22 home win versus Minneola.

The Red Aces led 24-6 after the first quarter and 54-22 after three quarters. Bucklin, which has already won games against several challenging teams, will travel to winless Ingalls next week. A victory gives Bucklin its most victories in a season since 1996.

La Crosse races past Kinsley

La Crosse took a major step to winning District 6 with a 54-20 road win versus Kinsley.

Against Kinsley, La Crosse led 14-0 after the first quarter and 20-6 at halftime. Leopard standout running back Colby Stull finished with 21 carries for 292 yards and six TDs. La Crosse outrushed, Kinsley, 334-166. Stull scored on runs from 70, 15, 30, 30, 18 and 33. La Crosse scored the game’s first 20 points.

La Crosse has won 15 consecutive games in the series.

The Leopards won their fourth straight game, improved to 4-2, 3-0 in district play. Kinsley dropped to 4-2, 2-1. La Crosse can clinch the district with a home win against Pratt-Skyline next week.

6-Man Football

No. 1 Cunningham rolls past Moscow

Top-ranked Cunningham continued to roll through its schedule with a 46-0 road-win at Moscow. The Wildcats can wrap up the 6-Man South Division title and top seed with a win against Pawnee Heights (3-3) next week.

Natoma edges Cheylin, 40-32

Natoma remained unbeaten with a 40-32 victory over defending 6-Man champion Cheylin.

The Tigers were coming off an open week, but managed to get by the Cougars and improve their record to 5-0. Natoma sits atop the 6-Man North Division standings with a home game against Tribune-Greeley County (2-4) next week.
