HUTCHINSON -- Andale delivered a stellar defensive performance in forcing four turnovers and shutting out Perry-Lecompton, 20-0, to win the Class 3A state championship for the second consecutive season.
The Indians held the Kaws to 215 yards of total offense in the contest, well below their 388-yard average this season.
The first quarter only consisted of two drives. The Kaws reached the Andale 24-yard line on its opening possession, when Cody Parthemer grabbed the first of four interceptions of Perry-Lecompton quarterback Thad Metcalfe on the day.
Andale would consume seven minutes on its first drive, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown run from Noah Meyer.
“The difference was the turnovers, we had four, and that was huge because it shortened the field for us,” Andale head Coach Dylan Schmidt commented to Gallagher Martin of the Hutchinson News.
Perry-Lecompton’s second drive would also end in an interception, with Jacob Englebrecht doing the honors for the Indians.
Andale would only take three minutes to score as Eli Rowland broke free for a 7-yard touchdown run.
After a Perry-Lecompton punt, both teams would trade interceptions and go to the halftime break with Andale leading, 12-0.
Andale would start the third quarter with a 15-play, 60-yard drive that took up 7:30 off the clock and resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run from Rowland – his second of the game.
Neither team could muster any points the remainder of the game.
The Andale defense stood up again and stopped the ensuing Perry-Lecompton drive on a turnover on down. Jacob Englebrecht later grabbed his second interception of the game.
Rowland led the Andale offense with 147 rushing yards and two scores on 29 carries. Meyer, 91 yards on 18 carries to go along with the game’s first score.
As they did much of the year, the Indians stuck to the ground game, with Wyatt Spexarth completing 1 of 3 pass attempts for 12 yards and an interception.
Metcalfe led Perry-Lecompton with 83 yards rushing and passed for 86 yards, but was intercepted four times.
The title was Andale’s fifth overall, including state titles in 2006, ’07, ’14, and ’19.
