Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A
Olathe South scored two touchdowns in the second half to top Shawnee Mission South 21-7. Kyhiem Matthews rushed for 174 yards on 20 carries including an 82-yard touchdown. Quarterback Jake Seuer completed 3 of 5 passes for 50 yards and a score. Ra’Keim Abdual led the SM South Raiders with 142 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.
The Garden City Buffaloes shut out 5A’s Hays Indians 35-0 in a Western Athletic Conference game that was called at halftime due to weather. Garden City quarterback Greyson Tempel completed 4 of 6 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 101 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries. Garden City scored 21 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second quarter.
Olathe East cruised to a 61-12 win over Shawnee Mission North. Hawks senior quarterback Connor Leach completed 10 of 12 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another touchdown. Olathe East junior running back Jalen Branson ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Wichita Northwest senior running back Deron Thompson rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-20 win over Wichita Southeast. Grizzlies running back Christian Sanders added 125 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Wichita Southeast’s Tre Griffin rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Class 5A
KC Washington rushed for 312 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-6 victory over KC Harmon. Wildcats junior running back Jaevon Williams ran for 174 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Kalem Harrison ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns on eight attempts.
Call it a trifecta for Liberal senior quarterback Britton Abbott. He scored at least one touchdown as a passer, rusher and receiver as the Redskins defeated Dodge City 40-27. Abbott completed 14 of 25 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 97 yards and a touchdown and catching a 7-yard touchdown reception from Lorenzo Pando. Trenton Hammond caught five balls for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
Salina South junior Eric McCullough ran for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in a 56-28 win over Haysville Campus. Senior running back Mike Jones added 82 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Cougars senior Zach Nachbar caught three balls for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Lansing junior quarterback Krystian Abbott passed for 255 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-8 win over Basehor-Linwood. Abbott connected with Khalil Bailey four times for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Lions junior Colin McQuillan ran for 128 yards and a touchdown, while catching two balls for 58 yards and a touchdown. Alex Jackson led Basehor-Linwood with 98 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Class 4A
Hesston’s Ryan Schadler continues to torch Central Kansas League defenses. The senior rushed for 420 yards and six touchdowns on 18 carries in the Swathers’ 56-28 win over Hillsboro. Schadler has now rushed for 1,056 yards and 16 touchdowns on 55 carries. That’s an average of 19.2 yards per carry and 264 yards per game. He also caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt McKinney in the win.
Paola knocked of previously unbeaten Eudora 28-14 in a key Frontier League game. The Panthers built a 14-7 lead at halftime behind a strong rushing effort from ExZavier Miller who had more than 100 yards and two scores at the break. The Panthers expanded their lead to 21-7 after a Drew Henn touchdown pass. Eudora pulled within a touchdown again before a pick-six put the game away for the Panthers.
Ulysses ended defending 3A champion Scott City’s 17-game win streak with a 25-6 win on Friday night. Tiger sophomore running back Ian Rudzik (6-2, 220) rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Ulysses scored in each quarter and racked up 280 yards on the ground. After an early touchdown run by Martin Gough, the Beavers couldn’t overcome three turnovers the rest of the way.
Wichita Collegiate scored 21 points in the fourth quarter against Wellington to break open a game was tied at 21 in the second half. Seth Carder rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans. Quarterback Landon Root passed for 180 yards and a score and rushed for a touchdown. Austin Dunn broke free for two long touchdown runs for the Crusaders.
Class 3A
St. Mary’s Colgan used two long Aaron Twarog field goals and a defensive touchdown to top arch-rival Frontenac 26-7. Twarog drilled a 45-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to give the Panthers a 9-7 lead. Tully Yoakam returned an interception for a touchdown early in the third quarter and Twarog connected on a 38-yard field goal to extend the Colgan lead. Drew Dawson led the Panthers with 105 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Sophomore Ryan Haskins passed for 118 yards and three touchdowns as Osage City topped Northern Heights 26-14. J.T. Lincoln caught two of those touchdown passes as part of his 90-yard night. Haskins also led the Indians in rushing with 129 yards on 26 carries. Mitchell Wecker led the Wildcats with 111 yards rushing on 27 carries.
Sedgwick scored 21 points in the second quarter in rolling to a 42-6 win over Ell-Saline. Brylie Ware completed 13 of 19 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns and added 96 yards and two scores rushing for Sedgwick. Dalton Brandt led the winning Cardinals with 121 yards and two touchdowns. Green Chandler caught six passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. Ell-Saline was led by Justin Schmutz who rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Galena built a 30-8 halftime lead as the Bulldogs beat former CNC League rival Northeast-Arma, 43-14. Gabe Helton rushed 20 times for 223 yards and three scores to lead the unbeaten Bulldogs. Kyler Cook passed for 110 yards and connected on a 32-yard touchdown pass with Zach Bankson. J.T. Richardson led the Vikings with 151 yards rushing and a score.
Nolan McCurry rushed for 333 yards and five scores as Hoisington blasted Ellinwood 55-6. The Cardinals showed no signs of rust after an off week as they scored 27 points in the first quarter. Hoisington also got scoring contributions Taylor Richter and Avery Urban. Richter also hit McCurry on a touchdown pass. Ellinwood managed very little on offense, finishing with under 50 yards of total offense and just seven rushing yards on 20 attempts.
Class 2-1A
Washington County outscored Valley Heights 20-14 in the second half to beat the Mustangs 27-20. Sophomore quarterback Konner Penning passed for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tigers. Cole Thompson led Washington County with 96 receiving yards and a touchdown on nine receptions. Derek Trimble rushed for 113 yards to lead Valley Heights. Cole Maddox added 87 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the Mustangs.
Jayhawk-Linn evened their record at 2-2 under first-year coach Spencer Brown with a 36-17 win at Jefferson Co. North. The Jayhawks led 24-17 at halftime and outscored the Chargers 12-0 in the second half. Jayhawk-Linn rushed for five touchdowns in the game; four by Tommy Avery. Jefferson Co. North was led by James Pisachubbee who broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run.
Jackson Heights scored in every quarter in beating Maur Hill 48-8. Tim Rupnicki rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cobras. Jackson Heights improved to 4-0 on the season. It marks just the fourth time the Cobras have posted four wins in a season in the past 10 years.
Olpe held a slim 21-20 halftime lead over McLouth and extended it to 35-20 in the second half before holding on for a 35-28 win. Bo Krueger threw two touchdown passes and broke a long touchdown run to lead the Eagles. Nick McAferty, a 2012 Kpreps 2-1A all-state selection, caught 10 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns for McLouth.
Class 8M-I
Peabody-Burns trailed Canton-Galva 14-0 after one quarter on Friday night, but then outscored the Eagles 50-6 the rest of the way for a 50-20 win. Fred Winsor rushed 19 times for 254 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Warriors. Winsor has now rushed for 580 yards and 12 scores this season. Peabody-Burns is 4-0 and averaging 52 points per game.
Hoxie outscored Dighton 22-6 in the second half to break a 12-12 tie and win 34-18. Quarterback Chase Kennedy lead the Indians with 208 rushing yards and a pair of scores. Kennedy also threw for 73 yards and a touchdown. Dighton freshman Tyler Lingg passed for 126 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score in the loss. Issac Alinor caught five balls for 92 yards and a score for the Hornets.
Macksville outscored St. John 22-0 in the middle quarters which proved to be the difference in a 58-36 Mustangs’ win. Tanner Tranbarger produced 367 yards of total offense; rushing for 234 yards and five touchdowns and passing for 133 yards and a score. Simon Miller caught six passes for 130 yards and a score for the Mustangs. Schuyler Brown carried 35 times for 275 yards and four scores to lead the Tigers.
West Elk took a 36-14 lead into the fourth quarter of their district showdown with South Haven, but the Cardinals would rally for 22 points to force overtime. South Haven got the ball first in overtime and J.T. Yunker scored to give the Cardinals a 42-36 lead. West Elk answered to tie the game and avoided a near sack to complete the two-point conversion attempt for the dramatic 44-42 win. Tristen Wilson passed for 123 yards and three scores for the Patriots. He also added 68 yards rushing and a score. Armando Gomez rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown for West Elk. Yunker finished with 265 yards rushing and four scores. It was the first regular season loss for South Haven in 23 games.
Class 8M-II
Derrick Cassell rushed for 232 yards and five touchdowns on 28 carries as Chetopa outscored Uniontown 72-54. Quarterback Phillips Moses passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns for the Green Hornets. Austen Sanders caught eight passes for 133 yards and three scores. Chetopa led 44-36 at halftime. Cassell also logged 22 tackles on the night.
South Barber doubled-up Stafford 48-24 to halt a two-game losing streak and pick up an important district win. Quarterback Peyton Yandel passed and rushed for three touchdowns each in producing 240 yards of total offense. Dylan Allison added 115 yards and a score on the ground and caught four balls for 45 yards and a touchdown. Ethan Johnson rushed for 126 yards and three scores for Stafford.
Kyler Telford carried 20 times for 259 yards and three scores as Rolla beat South Gray, 38-6. Telford also had 14 tackles and an interception on defense. He is a big reason for the Pirates (4-0) turn around the past couple of seasons. Telford is averaging 11.5 yards per carry and has totaled 736 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Prior to Rolla’s 7-3 season a year ago, the Pirates had won just five games the previous eight seasons.
