As we’ve come to expect, there is little change to this week’s rankings resulting from the opening round of bracket play. Many of the top teams cruised to first-round victories, but the competition will stiffen this week as we get further into the playoffs. Let’s take a look at this week’s Kpreps rankings.

Class 6A

No. 1 Lawrence rolled to a 66-6 win over 16-seed Wichita North. The Chesty Lions held North to 50 yards of total offense in the game. Lawrence will host 9-seed Dodge City this week.

No. 2 Olathe North received a bye into the second round as the top seed on the eastern half of Class 6A. The Eagles will now face 8-seed Olathe Northwest, 42-0 winners over Shawnee Mission West last week. Olathe North defeated Olathe Northwest 37-0 to close out the regular season.

No. 3 Derby cruised to a 62-0 victory over Wichita Southeast. The Panthers scored 48 points in the first half tin rolling into the next round where they will host 5-seed Gardner-Edgerton.  

No. 4 Junction City got a good challenge from Lawrence Free State for more than a half before pulling away for a 42-21 win. Andrew Khoury connected with Marcello Bussey on three touchdown passes to help propel the Blue Jays into the second round.

No. 5 Shawnee Mission Northwest received a bye into the second round as the 2-seed on the eastern half of Class 6A. The Cougars will now host the 7-seed Olathe West in the second round. The Owls defeated Shawnee Mission South, 41-6.


Class 5A

No. 1 Wichita Northwest rushed for more than 530 yards in a 68-12 win over 16-seed Salina Central. The Grizzlies had a pair of backs go over 140 rushing yards in Julius Bolden and Geremiah Moore. Wichita Northwest will take on 8-seed Wichita Heights in the second round. The Grizzlies defeated Heights 56-21 back on October 9th.

No. 2 Mill Valley received a bye into the second round as the 3-seed on the eastern half of Class 5A. The Jaguars will take on 6-seed Spring Hill in the second round.

No. 3 Bishop Carroll did not play. The Golden Eagles advanced via forfeit given the COVID situation at Valley Center.

No. 4 Topeka Seaman received a bye into the second round as the top seed on the eastern half of Class 5A. The Vikings will host 9-seed Blue Valley Southwest in the second round.

No. 5 Hutchinson received a challenge from 15-seed Newton for a second time this season. Ultimately, the Salthawks prevailed 46-41 behind a 240-yard, three-touchdown effort from Alec McCuan. Hutchinson will host 7-seed and third-ranked Bishop Carroll this week.


Class 4A

The five Class 4A teams remained unchanged again this week.

No. 1 Paola did not play but advanced via forfeit given the COVID situation at Ottawa. The Panthers will host 9-seed St. James Academy this week.

No. 2 Tonganoxie exploded for 35 points in the first quarter then cruised to a 48-28 victory over Labette County. Tyler Bowden once again rushed for more than 200 yards and added three touchdowns to his season total. The Chieftains will host 6-seed Lansing in the next round.

No. 3 Bishop Miege rolled to a 64-17 win at 7-seed Chanute. The Stags scored all 64 points in the first half of Friday’s victory. Bishop Miege will now travel to 2-seed and unbeaten Fort Scott this week.

No. 4 McPherson cruised to a 78-14 victory over 16-seed Abilene on Thursday night. The Bullpups led 70-0 at halftime. McPherson will host 8-seed Augusta in the next round. McPherson defeated Augusta 32-14 on October 23rd.

No. 5 Andover Central rolled to a 49-7 win over Great Bend on Friday. The Jaguars will host 10-seed Arkansas City who won at Wellington 27-6. Andover Central defeated Ark City 37-6 back on October 23rd.


Class 3A

Class 3A also had no changes in the rankings in a deep classification.

No. 1 Andale scored 30 points in each of the first two quarters in routing Larned, 74-7. Eli Rowland had a huge game for the Indians in rushing for five touchdowns and catching two more touchdown passes. Andale will host Clearwater in the next round. The two teams met in district play with Andale claiming a 40-21 victory.

No. 2 Topeka Hayden advanced to the second round with a 42-6 win over Sabetha behind a big night from Desmond Purnell. Purnell rushed for 90 yards and a score and caught two touchdown passes totaling 87 yards. Hayden now will have a huge rematch with No. 3 Perry-Lecompton in the second round. The Wildcats edged the Kaws 10-0 in district play a couple of weeks ago.

No. 3 Perry-Lecompton scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to build a 29-14 halftime lead and held off a challenge from Rock Creek to advance, 35-22. Rock Creek advanced deep inside Perry-Lecompton territory a couple of times and came up empty due to a fumble and turnover on downs. Perry-Lecompton will now travel to No. 2 Topeka Hayden for a second-round showdown.

No. 4 Southeast of Saline had little trouble in a 46-8 first-round victory over Clay Center. The Trojans got four touchdowns from senior back Bryant Banks. Southeast of Saline will host Marysville in the second round.

No. 5 Cheney scored on a touchdown pass from Harrison Voth to Dayton Higgs in the final :30 seconds to defeat Halstead, 40-34. Cheney will host Wichita Collegiate this week in one of the better second-round games on the Class 3A schedule.

 

Class 2A

No. 1 Rossville cruised to a 53-6 victory over Riverside and into the second round. The Bulldawgs will host Maur Hill-Mount Academy which sets just outside of the top five this week. Nemaha Central edged out the Raves for the fifth spot in this week’s poll.

No. 2 Hoisington blanked Ellis 47-0 to advance to a second-round game with Cimarron. The two teams last met in the second round in 2018 with Hoisington advancing with a 41-18 victory.

No. 3 Silver Lake led Republic County 7-6 after one quarter, then exploded for seven consecutive touchdowns to blow the game open. Daigan Kruger threw five touchdown passes and rushed for two more scores. Silver Lake will travel to No. 5 Nemaha Central this week in the top Class 2A game on the schedule.

No. 4 Garden Plain rolled to a 52-6 win over Marion on Thursday night. The Owls will advance to host Hillsboro and their dynamic quarterback Matthew Potucek in the second round.

No. 5 Nemaha Central garners enough votes to edge out Maur Hill-Mount Academy this week for the fifth spot in the Class 2A poll. The Thunder rolled to a 50-6 win over Pleasant Ridge to open the playoffs and will host No. 3 Silver Lake this week.

 

Class 1A

No. 1 Olpe received a bye into the second round as the champion out of District 1. The Eagles will host Jackson Heights who they defeated earlier this season, 35-0.

No. 2 Centralia received a bye into the second round as the champion out of District 2. Centralia will take on Wabaunsee for the second time in three weeks. The Panthers won the earlier meeting 60-20 on October 23rd.

No. 3 Smith Center received a bye into the second round as the champion out of District 3. Smith Center will take on Ell-Saline for the second time this season. The Redmen defeated the Cardinals 46-13 back on October 16th.

No. 4 Conway Springs received a bye into the second round as the champion out of District 4. Conway Springs will host Plainville this week.

No. 5 Inman enters the poll after a 61-0 win over Stanton County coupled with last week’s No. 5 Valley Heights having to forfeit the remainder of their season due to COVID-19. Inman will take on Whitewater-Remington for the second time this season. The Teutons won the earlier meeting, 54-13 back on October 16th.

 

Eight-Man Division I

Eight-Man, Division I has seen no changes for weeks in the top five poll.

No. 1 Canton-Galva rolled to a 46-0 first-round win over Valley Falls. The Eagles will now host Burlingame (7-2) in the second round.

No. 2 Leoti-Wichita County defeated Hill City for a second time this season. The Indians beat the Ringnecks 68-22 after beating Hill City 48-0 back in Week 3. Wichita County will host Atwood-Rawlins County in the second round.

No. 3 Madison rolled to a 59-6 win over West Elk to earn a second-round home game against Oswego. Quarterback Casey Helm completed all five of his passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns.

No. 4 Clifton-Clyde rolled to a 46-0 first-round win over Bennington. The Eagles will host No. 5 Little River in a rematch of one of the better regular-season games this season. Clifton-Clyde beat Little River 42-36 in overtime back in Week 2.

No. 5 Little River cruised to a 56-0 win over Washington County to advance to a rematch with Clifton-Clyde. The Redskins lost to Clifton-Clyde 42-36 in overtime back in Week 2.


Eight-Man, Division II

Two of the top-five Division II teams did not play this week.

No. 1 Saint Francis rolled to a 54-0 win over Ingalls in a game that ended at halftime. The Indians will host Bucklin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7th.

No. 2 Hanover eliminated defending champion Osborne 56-6 for the Wildcats’ second victory over the Bulldogs this season. Hanover will now get another rematch – against district rival Axtell. Hanover beat Axtell 62-12 back in Week 4.

No. 3 Victoria cruised to a 54-6 win over Norwich to advance to the second round. The Knights will now get a rematch with Sylvan-Lucas Unified in the second round. Victoria defeated Sylvan-Lucas 54-22 back in district play in Week 4.

No. 4 Lebo rolled to a 58-0 win over Chetopa. The Wolves will now get a rematch with school-district rival Waverly. Lebo defeated Waverly 52-6 back in Week 3.

No. 5 Frankfort cruised to a 60-14 win over Lakeside-Downs behind a strong performance from quarterback Gavin Cornelison. Cornelison rushed for 117 yards and two scores and passed for 159 yards and two more touchdowns. Frankfort will travel to Beloit St. John’s-Tipton in the second round.

Six-Man

No. 1 Cheylin captured the fifth annual 6-Man Wild West Bowl Championship with a 46-0 victory over Moscow on Saturday in Dodge City. The Cougars completed a perfect 9-0 season with a dominating performance in the title game. Freshman quarterback Logan McCarty completed 21 of 26 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns and added 47 yards rushing and three more scores. Colton McCarty had five receptions for 102 yards and two scores. This was Cheylin’s first-ever state championship in athletics.

No. 2 Moscow finished as the 6-Man runner-up this fall after winning the title in 2019. The Wildcats finished with a 6-2 record.

No. 3 Golden Plains defeated Cunningham 58-31 in the consolation game to claim third place for a second consecutive season. Rojelio Loya scored five touchdowns to help the Bulldogs pull away from the Wildcats. Trailing 25-24, Rojelio’s touchdown run in the final :30 seconds of the first half gave Golden Plains the lead for good. Wade Rush scored a pair of touchdowns and Roberto Loya added a score for Golden Plains. The Bulldogs finished the season with an 5-3 record.
