For the first time in 49 weeks we have a new No. 1 team in 8-Man, Division II. What other changes occurred after last week’s action? Find out with the Kpreps Week 7 Rankings.

Class 6A

Top-ranked Derby rolled past Hutchinson, 56-7, despite missing quarterback Grant Adler. Adler is expected to miss multiple games after suffering an ankle injury. Adler had his sophomore and junior seasons cut short due to injuries. Lem Wash filled in for Adler against Hutchinson and produced five touchdowns in the victory.   

Olathe North remains in the No. 2 spot after outscoring Shawnee Mission East 35-7 in the second half to claim a 77-49 win in a wild game on Friday night. The Eagles and Lancers traded blows in the first half that saw the game tied at 42. In the second half, Olathe North took control behind junior running back Arland Bruce, IV who rushed for 318 yards and six touchdowns to push his season total to 1,234 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Lawrence High fell behind 14-0 to Shawnee Mission South and trailed 21-14 at halftime before rallying to beat the Raiders, 40-21. The third-ranked Chesty Lions got a big game from quarterback Jackson Dooley who passed for nearly 350 yards – 200 of those going to Chris McGee who reached the end zone twice. Lawrence will travel to No. 2 Olathe North this week in a game that will go a long way in deciding the Sunflower League title.

Gardner-Edgerton remains at No. 4 this week after cruising to a 54-14 win over Shawnee Mission North. The Blazers will host high-scoring Shawnee Mission Northwest (5-1) this week.

Finally, Blue Valley’s loss to Bishop Miege drop the Tigers out of this week’s poll and allows Topeka High to move back in at No. 5. The Trojans topped Washburn Rural, 42-28, on Friday behind another big performance from Minnesota-commit Ky Thomas. Thomas became the Centennial League’s all-time career rushing leader with a 271-yard, three touchdown performance against the Junior Blues. Thomas now has 6,082 rushing yards in his high school career.

Class 5A

Top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas survived a battle with St. James Academy before prevailing, 28-21. The Saints led 21-14 in the second half before Tyron “Tank” Young put Aquinas up two scores with a 69-yard touchdown sprint. Young finished with 199 yards and two scores to lead the Saints. Aquinas has a huge showdown at Class 4A No. 1 Bishop Miege this week.  

Second-ranked Wichita Northwest continues to use a solid defense to shut opponents down. The Grizzlies throttled Garden City, 52-2, on Friday to remain unbeaten. Northwest has surrendered only 41 points all season after allowing nearly 30 points per game last season.

While Aquinas and Wichita Northwest have been the unanimous choices at the top of the poll, the voting at No. 3 through No. 5 spots has been extremely close all season. Maize remains in the No. 3 spot this week after a 51-7 victory over Salina South. Caden Cox followed his offensive line to rush for 288 yards in the victory over the Cougars. The Eagles will travel to Salina this week to take on Salina Central (4-2).

Bishop Carroll and De Soto switch places in this week’s poll. The Golden Eagles barely pass De Soto in the voting to claim the No. 4 spot this week. Carroll won the Holy War over rival Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 23-13. It was the Golden Eagles’ 21st consecutive victory over Kapaun.

Meanwhile, De Soto went on the road and got a quality 28-16 win over Basehor-Linwood. The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to erase a 9-0 deficit. The Wildcat defense returned an interception for a touchdown, then Jackson Miller rushed for two scores and passed for another in the win.

Mill Valley sits just outside the poll this week. The Jaguars are 3-3, but their losses have come by seven points each to Blue Valley West (4-2), Bishop Miege (5-1), and St. Thomas Aquinas (6-0).


Class 4A

Bishop Miege pulled away from then 6A No. 5 Blue Valley for a 41-23 win. Brison Cobbins made up for missing the Blue Valley game a season ago by rushing for 118 yards and five touchdowns on Friday. He scored five consecutive times in the game after Blue Valley took an early lead. Bishop Miege lead was 14-7 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter. Miege will host 5A No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas this week.  

Second-ranked McPherson pulled away in the second half to beat Augusta, 56-14. The Bullpups got a kick return and a punt return for touchdowns in the first half to lead 28-14 at the break. McPherson won despite giving up nearly 300 rushing yards to the Orioles.  

Paola remains ranked No. 3 this week after grinding out a 43-26 win over KC Piper. Garrett Williams rushed for three touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass in the game. Connor Hasz also added a pair of touchdowns on the ground for the Panthers.  

Tonganoxie remains in the No. 4 spot after an impressive 41-0 shutout of Spring Hill. The Chieftains went to the air as junior quarterback Blake Poje passed for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns. Cooper Cunningham again contributed over 200 yards rushing and now has 1,260 yards and ten scores on the season.  

Finally, Andover Central delivered a complete performance in a 41-7 win over Great Bend. The Jaguars led 34-0 at halftime. Shomari Parnell passed for nearly 200 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Jaguar offense.  


Class 3A

Top-ranked Andale rolled to a 47-7 victory over a turnover-riddled Wichita Collegiate squad. The Indian defense scored the first two touchdowns of the game on a pick-six and a fumble return for a score. Andale intercepted five Collegiate passes on the night and recovered two Spartan fumbles.  Andale hosts Clearwater (5-1) this week with a victory giving the Indians the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail – IV title.

Marysville stays in the No. 2 spot this week after rolling to a 60-28 win over Royal Valley. The Bulldogs can essentially wrap up the District 4 title this week with a win over Holton (4-2). Marysville defeated Holton 6-0 last season.  

Topeka Hayden remains ranked third after rolling to a 57-6 win over struggling Bishop Ward. The Wildcats will travel to Perry-Lecompton (3-3) this week. Meanwhile, Bishop Ward has now dropped 53 consecutive games.    

Fourth-ranked Sabetha picked up an impressive 35-13 victory over Holton. Gabe Garber passed for more than 265 yards and four touchdowns in the contest. Sabetha has a huge district match-up this week against Wamego.

Finally, Scott City drops out of the poll after a 28-13 home loss to Beloit. The Beavers are replaced in the No. 5 spot by unbeaten Halstead. The Dragons rolled to a 45-20 victory at Clay Center on Friday. The Dragons actually trailed Clay Center 12-0 until the later parts of the third quarter before exploding for 45 points.

Class 2A

Hoisington cruised to a 55-19 victory over Minneapolis to stay unbeaten. The Cardinals got nearly 200 yards and five touchdowns on the ground from Wyatt Pedigo who went over 1,000 yards on the season. Hoisington will host defending 2A champion Phillipsburg (2-4) this week. Phillipsburg has defeated Hoisington three times in the past two seasons.   

Second-ranked Silver Lake cruised to another dominating district win, 62-0 over West Franklin. Friday marked the Eagles fourth consecutive shutout.

Garden Plain remains in the No. 3 spot this week after a 57-21 win over Chaparral. Matt Pauly passed for 177 yards and three touchdowns – all to Trey Smith. Garden Plain also rushed for 340 yards in the game.

Garden Plain’s rival Conway Springs moves up a spot No. 4 after a 42-7 win at Whitewater-Remington. The Cardinals got more than 200 yards of total offense from Collin Koester in the victory. Conway Springs will host Chaparral this week before the Week 8 showdown with Garden Plain.

Finally, Humboldt slips one spot to No. 5 this week following the Cubs’ 20-14 win over Riverton. Conor Haviland continues to impress with 236 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Haviland also threw a touchdown pass to account for all of the Cubs’ scoring.


Class 1A

Top-ranked Smith Center rolled to a 60-0 shutout of Sacred Heart in Salina. The Redmen will travel to winless Republic County (0-6) this week. Republic County’s last five opponents are all currently 5-1 on the season and the Buffaloes lost three of those contests by single digits.  

Second-ranked Olpe had little trouble in cruising past Leon-Bluestem, 55-0. The Eagles continue district play this week with a trip to Marion (1-5).   

Third-ranked Plainville got all-stater Jared Casey back from injury and handled previously-unbeaten La Crosse, 40-6. Casey rushed for 139 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Plainville will travel to Ellis (3-3) this week.   

Centralia stays at No. 4 this week after a 58-19 blowout of Northern Heights. The Panthers scored 44 points in the first half and led by as much as 58-6. Kamble Haverkamp rushed for 174 yards and three scores, while Devon Feldkamp added 127 yards and two touchdowns.  

Sedgwick remains in the poll this week slightly ahead of Jackson Heights (4-2) for the No. 5 spot. The Cardinals opened district play with a 42-0 shutout of Meade. Lance Hoffsommer passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Class 8M-I

Top-ranked Canton-Galva picked up its fourth shutout of the season with a 60-0 decision over Goessel. The Bluebirds entered this contest 4-1 on the season, but Canton-Galva overwhelmed them with 38 points in the opening quarter.  

Second-ranked Saint Francis dominated previously-undefeated Leoti-Wichita County 46-0 on Friday night. The Indians scored 40 points in the first half on their way to their fourth shutout of the season. Saint Francis will host WaKeeney-Trego (4-2) this week.  

Third-ranked South Central rolled to a 52-6 win over Caldwell. The Timberwolves shut down a Caldwell offense that entered averaging nearly 44 points per game. South Central will host Oxford (2-4; 0-3) this week before a Week 8 game with Argonia-Attica (4-2; 3-0) that will decide the district title.

Fourth-ranked Madison remains the only unbeaten team in District 3 after a 74-12 rout of Valley Falls. The Bulldogs can wrap up the district title with a win over Burlingame this week.

Clifton-Clyde stays at No. 5 after a 50-0 blanking of Stockton for their fourth shutout this season. The Eagles can clinch the District 7 championship with a win over Washington County this week.  


Class 8M-II

After 48 consecutive weeks being ranked No. 1 in the Kpreps polls, Hanover drops to the No. 2 spot this week after Axtell knocked off the Wildcats, 28-26, on Friday night. The loss snapped Hanover’s eight-man state-record 43-game win streak.

Axtell freshman quarterback Isaac Detweiler tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to George Volle to tie the game at 26 with :48 seconds remaining. Axtell then took the lead on a two-point conversion that saw Detweiler pitch the ball to Mitchell Buessing who then passed to Clark Werner in the end zone. Detweiler replaced Axtell all-state quarterback Quinn Buessing who was hit hard in the first quarter and did not return.

Hanover drove deep into Axtell territory, but Detweiler intercepted Wildcat quarterback Jacob Jueneman near the goal line to effectively end the game. The Eagles have another big district challenge when they take on undefeated Frankfort (6-0) this week.

Osborne remains in the No. 3 spot after a 60-6 win over Wilson in a game called at halftime, while No. 4 St. Paul rolled to a 62-16 victory over Marmaton Valley.

Fifth-ranked Thunder Ridge stayed perfect with a 56-6 victory over Logan-Palco. The Longhorns have a tune up this week against Wilson before closing the regular season with a game against No. 3 Osborne.
