Around the Classes - Week 4 recap

Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings. 

Class 6A:

Dodge City defeated Great Bend 24-21, on a game winning field goal. Dodge City led 21-0 at half off of an Alden Knedler run and a pair of Beau Foster touchdown runs.  Great Bend came roaring back and tied the game late in the fourth quarter. The Panthers would fumble the ball late in the fourth, which was recovered by Knedler. Jose Valverde would nail a 20-yd FG to win the game for the Red Demons.

The Junction City Blue Jays outlasted the Topeka High Trojans in a shootout, 48-41. Blue Jay quarterback Andrew Khoury went 14/21 for 157 yards and three scores. Topeka and Junction City traded touchdowns in third and fourth quarters until Khoury would connect to Ethan Alcorn from 21 yards out with less than a second remaining. Junction City and Topeka combined for a total 1,075 yards in the contest.

Blue Valley West beat Blue Valley North, 25-18 in two overtimes, in a Thursday night contest. The Jaguars got three touchdowns from Senior RB Riley Cummings. Cummings ran 141 yards on 30 carries. Defensively, the Jags forced six sacks on Blue Valley North, resulting in 33 yards lost for the Mustangs. The West defense also recovered two fumbles.

Manhattan had a big four-touchdown, 193-yd performance from senior running back B.J. Young.  The Indians easily defeated Washburn Rural, 34-14. Young averaged 11.4 yds/carry on 17 rushes. Jacob Hirschey picked off the Junior Blues twice, and Rural was sacked seven times by the Indian defense.

In Western Athletic Conference play, Garden City defeated Hays High, 35-32, at Lewis Field Stadium. HHS scored on the game’s second play with a 73-yard touchdown run by Roy Maroni, according to Hays High broadcaster Dustin Armbruster. However, GC tied the game with it recovered a bad snap in the end zone. Hays High quarterback Dylan Dreiling rushed for 65 yards and put Hays High up 13-6. Maroni again delivered a 33-yard rushing touchdown and gave HHS a 20-12 lead.

Then, GC tied the game at 20 with an 86-yard scoring drive. The game went back-and-forth again with Garden City taking a 27-26 lead, but Hays High took a 32-27 average when running back Hayden Brown threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Ruder. However, Garden City went 70 yards for a 35-32 lead. GC quarterback Carlos Acosta was lost due to injury.

Then, Josh Janas, who joined the football team this year and has had a nice season, scored his second rushing touchdown of the game for the final points. Janas rushed for nearly 200 yards as GC improved to 1-3. Sophomore Zane Burns replaced Acosta at quarterback.

Hays High had the ball, but its last two passes to the end zone fell incomplete. Dreiling rushed for 125 yards and a score, and Maroni delivered seven carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Class 5A:

Salina South picked up its first win of the season with a 49-19 decision over Haysville Campus in game finished on Saturday due to weather. The Cougars led 21-12 at halftime when the game was postponed. South finished off the Colts with a 28-7 second half on Saturday. Quarterback Terran Galloway passed for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while sophomore Brandt Cox rushed for 127 yards and three scores. Cox also caught a touchdown pass from Galloway. Ty Garrett had a big game receiving for South with nine catches for 120 yards and a score.

Blue Valley Southwest scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to overtake Blue Valley Northwest, 28-27. The Timberwolves raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter behind three Tanner Curry touchdown passes. But the Huskies responded with three consecutive scores in the second quarter, capped with a pick-six from Isaiah Smith to pull within 21-19 at halftime. Northwest took the lead on an Edward Thomas touchdown run and Mikey Pauley’s two-point conversion to Evan Ranallo made it 27-21 Huskies in the third quarter. But Curry would throw his fourth touchdown pass of the game – his second to Tristen Everard – with 1:28 remaining to tie the game. Dominik Stadlman was good on the PAT to give Blue Valley Southwest its first win of the season. Curry completed 25 of 39 pass attempts for 408 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Everard had ten catches for 141 yards and two scores, while Tommy Zimmerman caught five for 145 and a touchdown. Southwest rushed for negative 9 yards in the game.

KC Washington rebounded from its lone loss of the season with a 45-12 victory over KC Sumner Academy. Junior quarterback Cory Macon passed for 137 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Macon threw a touchdown pass to Malachi Kennon and two scoring strikes to Tywan Muturi. Muturi also returned an interception for a touchdown – his third pick-six of the season and his seventh overall interception in the Wildcats’ four games. Washington got it done on the ground too as six different Wildcats combined to rush for 227 yards.
 

Olathe West broke into the win column for the first time this season with a 35-12 victory over Shawnee Mission North. The Owls scored in each quarter and primarily kept things on the ground in rushing for 303 yards on the night. Sophomore Anthony Favrow led Olathe West with 210 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Alex Birge added 79 yards and two scores on the ground.

Goddard-Eisenhower rallied from 13 points down to overtake rival Goddard, 21-20.

The Tigers scored the winning points on a touchdown pass from Collin Mackey to Mason Turney with a little over a minute to go. Mackey passed for 160 yards and a pair of scores on the night. Goddard has now lost back-to-back games after being ranked No. 2 in the Class 4A poll.

Arkansas City led Maize South 15-7 at halftime before the Mavericks got things going and pulled away for a 33-15 victory. Hunter Niemann rushed for 247 yards and four touchdowns on 30 attempts to led the Mavericks. Ark City freshman quarterback Gabe Welch passed for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Class 4A:

Basehor-Linwood blasted Shawnee Heights, 57-19, to even its record at 2-2. The Bobcats led 21-19 at halftime before exploding for 36 points in the second half. Senior quarterback Chase Torkelson passed for 252 yards and a pair of touchdowns and added a pair of rushing scores. Connor Younger caught seven passes for 122 yards, while Curtis Ingham rushed for 133 yards for Basehor-Linwood.

Winfield outscored Labette County 22-0 in the second half to claim a 28-7 victory on Friday night. KC Crandall rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass in the second half to put the Vikings in control. Nolan Foust also rushed for a pair of touchdowns as part of his 115-yard night. Kooper Peak passed for 185 yards and a touchdown for Labette County with Nathan Smith catching six passes for 114 yards.  

Rose Hill picked up its first win of the season, 39-20 over Towanda-Circle. The Rockets got off to a 20-6 halftime lead on the T-Birds and led by as much as 39-13 until Circle scored a late touchdown. Circle’s Luke Myers passed for 156 yards and two scores in the losing effort. The Rocket defense held the T-Birds to 22 rush yards on 21 attempts.

Pittsburg got back on track with a 28-0 win at Fort Scott. The lead was only 7-0 at halftime on a Sam Roark touchdown run, but the Purple Dragons scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to take control. Pittsburg will host Ulysses this week.

Class 3A

Holcomb defeated Nickerson, 22-21, in overtime. The game was scoreless after the first quarter, and Holcomb led 7-0 at halftime and 7-6 after three quarters. However, Nickerson outscored Holcomb, 9-8, in the fourth quarter. Holcomb held a 7-6 edge in overtime. Sophomore Kaden Johnson completed eight of 12 passes for 79 yards with two touchdowns. Holcomb had 23 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. Senior Trey Cox had 16 carries and three touchdowns.

Anderson County defeated Iola, 35-6, in a game that changed because of severe weather. Bo Dilliner tallied four touchdowns and finished two of six passing for 26 yards. Dilliner picked off a pass, Bronson Sparks and Jayden Jarrett had fumble recoveries, and Justin Stifter had a 15-yard scoop-and-score for a touchdown. The game had a running clock late. AC improved to 2-2 under first-year coach Logan Pegram. AC has already matched last year’s win total after a 2-7 season that featured a 1-4 start.

Halstead held off Rock Creek in a 44-38 victory. The Dragons led 18-0 after the first quarter and 30-12 at halftime. However, Rock Creek outscored the Dragons, 13-0, in the third quarter. Halstead had a 14-13 advantage in the fourth quarter. Halstead has a big matchup versus Hesston in a battle of 4-0 teams. Junior Lakin Farmer has 17 carries for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Scott Grider has 17 carries for 97 yards and two scores. Senior Kaden Kraus has 16 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown. Farmer also completed 2 of 5 passes for 45 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Concordia defeated Russell, 44-18, and improved to 2-2. Russell dropped to 0-4. The Broncos led 6-0 early, though Concordia had a 20-12 halftime lead and kept the same margin entering the fourth quarter. Concordia’s defense limited Russell to 79 rushing and 41 passing yards, according to Russell Radio. Concordia first-year coach Jordan Echer led Russell last year. Concordia had 371 rushing yards, led by 160 from Keyan Miller and 145 by Hunter Schroeder.

Class 2A

Norton defeated Mid-Continent League rival Phillipsburg, 39-14. The Bluejays led 7-0 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime. Norton outscored the Panthers, 18-0, in the second half. Senior Kade Melvin completed six of 18 passes for 82 yards. He rushed 24 times for 129 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Luke Wahlmeier delivered 14 carries for 125 yards and a score. Phillipsburg is 1-3 with three straight losses after a 13-0 season in ’18. Norton is 2-2 and ended a three-game losing streak to the rival Panthers.

Lakin remained undefeated with a 60-21 victory versus Ellinwood with a 46-7 first quarter. Lakin led 60-7 at halftime. The Broncs have outscored teams, 190-42. Kayden Christiansen scored on the first play from scrimmage with a 69-yard run. Ellinwood closed to 8-7 before Lakin tallied 52 points. After the Eagles’ touchdown, William Gilleland returned the kickoff 97 yards for a score. Christiansen tallied three touchdowns in the game.

Cimarron also improved to 4-0 with a 50-8 victory against Southwestern Heights. SW senior Demetrio Flores rushed 27 times for 131 yards and a score.

Riverside upset Maur Hill, 28-27, on a 37-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds from Kobe Davis to Connor Hayes. Riverside’s Yegor Dittemore kicked the game-winning extra point. Both teams are 3-1. Maur Hill had won three straight in the series.

Class 1A

In a game that finished Monday, Sedgwick defeated Ell-Saline, 35-13, in a key Heart of America League contest. Both teams entered 3-0. Nolan Crumrine had eight tackles and a pass defended. Sedgwick delivered 455 yards of total offense. Senior Mason Lacey enjoyed a big game with 10 tackles and two scores off trick plays that turned the contest. Linebacker Gannon Resnik finished with 15 tackles, and Henry Burns also recorded 15 tackles with an interception. Sophomore quarterback Lance Hoffsommer finished 16 of 25 passing for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Kale Schroeder delivered 22 carries for 118 yards , along with four receptions for 45 yards.

La Crosse improved to 4-0 with a 42-28 victory against Ellis. The Leopards led 7-0 after the first quarter and 20-0 at halftime. La Crosse was up 34-14 after three quarters. Senior Hunter Morgan, a three-year starter at quarterback, continued his fine season with seven of 10 passing for 163 yards with two scores against zero interceptions. Morgan had 14 carries for 151 yards and two scores. Senior Michael Showalter delivered 10 tackles, three for loss. Sophomore Colby Stull delivered 18 carries for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Ellis sophomore quarterback Tegan Cain went 20 of 36 for 317 yards with a touchdown. Railroader junior Konnor Pfeifer recorded 19 tackles. The Leopards have already exceeded last year’s 3-6 record. This is again the first of two matchups between La Crosse and Ellis, which will meet up in district play. Ellis won both contests last year.

Elkhart captured its third straight victory with a 42-8 home win versus Clayton (N.M.). The Wildcats led 22-0 after the first quarter and 42-0 at halftime. Elkhart held a 53-32 edge in total plays, and 13-2 in first downs. Elkhart quarterback Emmanuel Moreno didn’t play, and senior Chace O’Hair enjoyed another big game with 20 carries for 234 yards and five touchdowns. Elkhart rushed 47 times for 437 yards and six scores. He led with eight tackles, twice as many as any of his teammates.

Sublette defeated Syracuse, 15-14, and had its first victory since a 13-12 win against Lakin on Sept. 25, 2015. Sublette tallied a late touchdown in the fourth quarter for the win and ended its 35-game losing streak. Syracuse led 14-0 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Eight-Man, Division I

Sedan defeated previously unbeaten Oswego, 56-22. Oswego led 16-6 after the first quarter, but Sedan outscored the Indians 14-0 in the second, 14-6 in the third and 22-0 in the fourth. Oswego senior Jace Wilson did enjoy a big game with 25 carries for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 1 of 2 passes for 11 yards, and caught a six-yard pass. Oswego committed four turnovers.

WaKeeney-Trego improved to 3-1 with a 52-12 victory against Rawlins County. Trego outscored Atwood, 24-6, in the first quarter, and 16-6 in the second quarter. This marks the second straight year the Golden Eagles have opened 3-1. Junior Kobi Shubert completed 13 of 19 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Hunter Price went over 100 yards again with 16 carries for 120 yards and two scores. Price led the team with 16 tackles. Senior Cooper Desormiers had five catches for 128 yards and two scores.

Goessel improved to 3-1 with a 36-26 victory against Solomon in District 4 play. The game started Friday and completed Saturday because of weather. Goessel trailed 20-8 in the second quarter. Goessel’s Luke Wiens had eight carries for 108 yards and three scores. Alex Herbel had another big game with 129 rushing yards and two scores. Solomon held a 253-250 rushing edge against Goessel, but the Bluebirds held a 62-7 edge in passing yards.

Spearville defeated Kinsley, 54-8, in a game called in the third quarter. The Lancers led 16-0 after the first quarter and 46-8 at halftime. The Lancers played without star Carson Rich. Junior Trace Tasset finished with 13 carries for 136 yards and three scores. Spearville delivered 23 rushes for 283 yards and six touchdowns. Tasset also had 96 yards in special teams returns.

Eight-Man, Division II

Wheatland-Grinnell improved to 3-1 with a 44-0 victory against Wallace County. W-G will move to 4-1 this week as Tribune-Greeley County has already forfeited this week’s contest. Sophomore Trey Vincent completed eight of 16 passes for 160 yards with five touchdowns against zero interceptions. Sophomore Tyrell Chapin delivered 13 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Logan-Palco pulled away from Wilson in the second quarter with a 54-14 road victory. L-P led 20-14 in the second quarter before 18 straight points for a 38-14 halftime lead. Josh Uhland tallied six total touchdowns, including all three scores to push the margin to 24 points at halftime. He caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Van Laeys, had a one-yard run and a five-yard interception return. Zach Jansonius had a 75-yard pick-six. Overall, Uhland finished with 17 times for 190 yards and four rushing scores. L-P outgained Wilson, 345-151.

South Barber led 30-0 after the first quarter and defeated South Haven, 52-0, in a game called at halftime. Senior Trevor Rooks completed six of six passes for 152 yards with two scores. As well, sophomore Gatlin Jewell completed one of two passes for 25 yards with a touchdown. Rooks completed six passes for 119 yards and three scores. Three players caught  scoring passes, including senior Gage Cantrell, which had  three catches for 86 yards with a long of 70 yards.

Central Christian defeated Burrton, 30-0, in a game that was called at the 4 minute, 30 second mark of the first quarter. The game was postponed because of lightning, and Burrton eventually called it a game. CC had three rushes for 90 yards with three touchdowns. Caleb Lambert had a 25-yard pick-six. Burrton finished with minus-11 yards of total offense.

Otis-Bison improved to 3-1 with its third straight victory with a 46-0 win against Satanta. Houston Friend, Satanta’s quarterback, delivered 10 of 21 passes for 174 yards with an interception. However, O-B’s defense limited Satanta to 15 carries for 50 yards.

Six-man

In a wild contest, Cheylin defeated Golden Plains, 71-61. Junior Colton McCarty continued his huge season with 20 of 31 for 269 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He had 41 carries for 442 yards and six scores. McCarty also recorded 60 special teams yards. The Cougars had 49 carries for 476 yards and seven scores. All four ball carriers are juniors. Golden Plains senior Harley Weese finished with 25 carries for 378 yards and six touchdowns.
