A pair of top-ranked teams suffered Week 4 losses. How did their losses impact the top five? Find out with the Kpreps Week 5 Rankings.
Class 6A
Top-ranked Derby passed its biggest test of the season to date with a 21-0 shutout of Bishop Carroll. Quarterback Grant Adler rushed for a score and threw a touchdown pass as the Panthers led 14-0 at halftime. Derby’s next three opponents have combined for just two wins.
Olathe North remains at No. 2 this week despite a 24-21 loss to Columbine - the top-ranked team in Colorado’s largest classification. The Eagles rallied from a 10-point deficit to take a 21-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Columbine broke a long touchdown run for the eventual game-winning points.
Lawrence High continues to climb the Class 6A rankings. The Chesty Lions are up to No. 3 this week after a 52-21 blowout of Olathe Northwest, and by virtue of Topeka High’s last-second loss to Junction City, 48-41. As a result, Topeka drops out of this week’s poll after being ranked No. 3 last week. The Trojans sit just outside of the top five with Junction City.
Gardner-Edgerton moves up a spot to No. 4 this week after a solid 34-6 victory over Olathe East. The Blazers will host Olathe Northwest this week.
After a one-week absence, Blue Valley is back in the top five this week after a 21-14 win over Missouri-power Rockhurst. Tiger quarterback Jake Wolff threw three long touchdowns passes – two to Dorian Stephens – to allow the Tigers to defeat the Hawklets. Rockhurst entered the contest ranked No. 7 in Missouri Class 6.
Class 5A
We have some shake up in the Class 5A poll for the first time in a few weeks. Top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas survived a talented Mill Valley team, 28-21. Tank Young scored on a 6-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to break a 21-21 tie. Despite their record, Mill Valley (1-3) remains just outside the top five in Class 5A. The Jaguars have lost by a touchdown in consecutive weeks to Aquinas and Bishop Miege. Mill Valley’s other loss came 28-21 to Blue Valley West (3-1) in the season opener.
Second-ranked Wichita Northwest routed Wichita West, 63-14 on Friday night. The Grizzlies have showed a marked improvement on the defensive side of the ball, allowing only 39 points through their first four games compared to 88 a season ago.
The No. 3 through No. 5 spots are where we find the changes in this week’s poll.
De Soto inches up to No. 3 this week after their 56-7 win over Lansing and Bishop Carroll’s 21-0 loss at 6A No. 1 Derby. As a result, De Soto inches up a spot to No. 3 followed by No. 4 Maize, and No. 5 Bishop Carroll. Maize rolled to a 44-7 win over Newton on Friday.
Class 4A
One of the storylines from Week 4 was St. James Academy upsetting 4A No. 1 Bishop Miege on Thursday night. The Thunder scored in the fourth quarter and grinded out a 28-27 win over the Stags. Despite the loss, Miege remains the top ranked team in our Class 4A poll – although the voting margin has certainly narrowed. The Stags are about to enter a difficult portion of their schedule when they travel to Rockhurst (Mo.) this week, followed by home games against Blue Valley and St. Thomas Aquinas.
McPherson stays in the No. 2 spot this week after blasting Abilene, 48-3, in a contest that ended at halftime due to weather. The Bullpups will host unbeaten Buhler this week.
Paola remains ranked No. 3 this week after jumping on Spring Hill early and cruising to a 35-7 win. The Panthers scored 21 points in the first five minutes of the game with Connor Hasz contributing a pair of touchdown runs. The Panthers will travel to winless Baldwin this week.
Andover Central remains in the fourth spot this week after holding off Valley Center, 17-14. The Jaguars will get another test this week when they travel to unbeaten Maize South.
Tonganoxie enters the poll at No. 5 this week replacing Goddard since the Lions dropped their second straight game. Tongy has rolled to an unbeaten start behind a strong offensive line and solid running game. The Chieftains topped Bonner Springs 40-21 on Friday and are averaging 43.5 points per game so far this season. Tonganoxie will travel to KC Piper (3-1) this week.
Class 3A
The biggest shake up in this week’s rankings comes in Class 3A where No. 3 Marysville outlasted top-ranked Sabetha 40-32 to snap the Blue Jays’ 23-game win streak.
As a result, Andale is the new No. 1 team in Class 3A. The Indians cruised to 52-6 win over Haven with a 38-point second quarter. Andale will travel to winless Wichita Trinity this week.
Marysville climbs to No. 2 after their win at Sabetha. Atreyau Hornbeak led the Bulldogs with five touchdowns in the victory. The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to unbeaten Wamego in another key district game this week. Sabetha falls three spots to No. 4 this week.
Topeka Hayden moves up a spot to No. 3 this week after winning at Santa Fe Trail 36-6 in a game that was called at halftime due to weather. The Wildcats scored four touchdowns in the first quarter – three of which were scored by Desmond Purnell. Purnell rushed for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass in the opening quarter. Hayden will host undefeated Jefferson West this week.
Finally, Scott City remains at No. 5 with a 27-7 victory at Ulysses. The Beavers will complete a three-game road trip this week when they travel to winless Russell.
Class 2A
Hoisington remains in the top spot after a 30-point win over Thomas More Prep. The Cardinals will travel to unbeaten Ellsworth this week to continue district play.
Second-ranked Silver Lake began district play with a 69-0 shutout of McLouth. The Eagles will be heavily favored in their district as only one other team, Osage City, had a victory before last week.
Garden Plain climbs another spot this week to No. 3. The Owls hammered Whitewater-Remington, 61-14, and will travel to Hutchinson Trinity (2-2) this week.
Southeast of Saline also moves up a spot this week to No. 4. The Trojans captured a 30-point win at St. Marys to begin district play. Southeast of Saline will host Rossville this week. Rossville fell from No. 3 to out of the poll after a 34-15 loss to Riley County.
Finally, Humboldt wins a close vote to enter to the poll at No. 5 this week. The Cubs shut out Jayhawk-Linn 44-0 on Friday. Humboldt will again be heavily favored at Erie (1-3) this week.
Class 1A
Top-ranked Smith Center won the battle of No. 1 versus No. 2 by besting Plainville, 40-14. The Redmen got rushing touchdowns from four different backs in the game. Plainville, which played without all-state running back and linebacker Jared Casey due to an injury, falls one spot to No. 3 this week.
Olpe moves up one spot to No. 2 this week after doubling up Jackson Heights 28-14. The Eagles also defeated the Cobras 20-18 last season. Olpe will be favored in each game from here on out with their remaining four opponents combining for a 4-11 record thus far this season.
Valley Heights rushed for 330 yards and converted all eight of its third-down attempts as part of a 34-14 victory over Republic County. The Mustangs will get a big test this week when they travel to Jackson Heights.
Finally, Centralia remains at No. 5 after posting a 30-0 shut out at St. Mary’s Colgan. The Panthers led 8-0 at halftime and late in the third quarter before closing the game with three more scores. Centralia will travel to Troy (2-2) this week.
Class 8M-I
Top-ranked Canton-Galva rolled to another big victory – 56-8 at Bennington. The Eagles will continue district play at Peabody-Burns this week.
Second-ranked Saint Francis surrendered their first points of the season – a safety as part of a 48-2 win over previously-unbeaten Oberlin-Decatur Community. The Indians continues what looks like on paper to be a tough stretch of district games. Saint Francis will travel to Hoxie (2-2) this week before returning home to take on Leoti-Wichita County (4-0) and WaKeeney-Trego (3-1).
Third-ranked South Central rolled to a 49-0 shutout of Udall. The Timberwolves led 17-0 after the first quarter and 37-0 at halftime. South Central has absolutely looked the part of a state title contender on the east side. The T-Wolves will host Medicine Lodge (2-2) this week.
Madison won the district showdown with Maranatha Christian Academy 68-58 in the Kpreps Fan’s Choice for Game of the Week. The Bulldogs fell behind by 16 points in the third quarter before reeling off 22 consecutive points. Madison will host Lyon County League rival Lebo (3-1) this week after the Wolves were upset by winless Valley Falls on Friday night.
Finally, Victoria rolled to a big victory over Lincoln, 70-18. The Knights will now host unbeaten Clifton-Clyde in a key District 7 showdown this week. Clifton-Clyde defeated the Knights, 54-30, last season.
Class 8M-II
Hanover won an eight-man state record 42nd consecutive game on Friday with a 46-0 blanking of Blue Valley Randolph. The Wildcats have one more tune-up at Onaga before their district showdown with No. 2 Axtell in Week 6.
Speaking of Axtell, the second-ranked Eagles rolled to a 58-10 win at Pike Valley. Quinn Buessing passed for 283 yards and five touchdowns in the victory and added a pair of rushing scores. Axtell is in the midst of a four-game road swing and will travel to Wetmore (1-3) this week.
Osborne remains at No. 3 in the poll this week. The Bulldogs blanked Sylvan-Lucas Unified, 48-0, to improve to 4-0. Osborne travels to Logan-Palco (3-1) this week.
Saint Paul cruised to a 48-0 victory over Colony-Crest. The Indians will host Altoona-Midway this week. The Jets are coming off of their first win of the season, 48-0, over Chetopa.
Finally, Thunder Ridge stays at No. 5 this week after a 62-12 victory over Northern Valley. The Longhorns will travel to Sylvan-Lucas Unified to complete a three-game road stretch.
