Kpreps Friday First Look provides our initial reaction to some most notable games and performances in the state from Week 2.
CLASS 6A
Topeka High tops Manhattan, 32-27
This time, Ky Thomas got in. For sure.
A year after being ruled down on an overtime, two-point conversion attempt to beat Manhattan, Thomas leaped into the end zone from four yards out with 1:21 remaining to propel Topeka High to a 32-27 victory.
The play capped a huge night from Thomas who finished with 294 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Manhattan jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Dayne Aschenbrenner to B.J. Young and an Aschenbrenner run.
Thomas scored a pair of short touchdown runs in the second quarter to pull the Trojans even at 14.
Then Manhattan regained a 20-14 lead as Young broke a long touchdown run.
Topeka responded with a Thomas touchdown run before halftime, but the score was waived off as Thomas was flagged for taunting. The Trojans settled for a field goal leaving Manhattan ahead, 20-17 at the break.
Topeka added another field goal in the third quarter to tie the game at 20.
Aschenbrenner’s long touchdown run put Manhattan back in front 27-20 in the fourth quarter.
That’s when Thomas took over. First with a 75-yard touchdown run that left Topeka trailing 27-26, then with the final leap into the end zone for the 32-27 win.

Blue Valley finishes off No. 3 Blue Valley North in continuation from Thursday
The Blue Valley Tigers finished what they started on Thursday night, polishing off an impressive 34-7 win over 6A No. 3 Blue Valley North.
The game was postponed from Thursday night when Blue Valley led 14-7 at halftime.
When things resumed on Friday afternoon, the Tigers wasted little time extending their lead. Chase Jans returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to put Blue Valley up 21-7.
Tiger quarterback Jake Wolff added a touchdown run later in the third quarter, and a touchdown pass to Sterling Lockett in the fourth quarter to complete the 34-7 win.
Wolff passed for 230 yards and two scores while rushing for two touchdowns as well.
Blue Valley North’s only points came on a Kahlil Allen touchdown run early in the first quarter. Allen finished with 73 yards on the ground.
Mustang quarterback Henry Martin passed for 181 yards on 20 of 33 passing.
Blue Valley has beaten Blue Valley North in eight of the past ten meetings.

Dodge City rolls past Salina South
Dodge City improved to 2-0 for the first time in three years after a 45-7 win over Salina South.
The Red Demons built a 28-7 lead by halftime thanks to three Beau Foster touchdown passes in the second quarter. Foster connected with Matt Friess on a pair of scores and De’Jon Delgado on another.
Delgado then returned an interception for a long touchdown in the third quarter.
Alden Knedler added a pair of touchdown runs for Dodge City.

Lawrence moves to 2-0 with win at SM East
Lawrence High has already eclipsed its win total from a season ago after a 30-7 victory over Shawnee Mission East.
Steve Rampy’s Lions led 7-0 on Thursday evening when the game was postponed until Friday afternoon. Once resumed, Jackson Dooley tossed a short touchdown pass to Bryce Smith for a 14-0 lead.
The Lion defense would expand that lead after halftime when Austin Hollins returned an interception for a score.
Shawnee Mission East would return the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to pull within 21-7, but the Lions added a touchdown run from Devin Neal and later forced a safety for the final margin.

SM West beats rival South to end long losing streak
Shawnee Mission West defeated rival Shawnee Mission South, 21-7 on Friday.
The Vikings, which also call Shawnee Mission South Stadium their home, ended a 20-game losing streak that dates back to the 2016 season.

Blue Valley Northwest wins at Harrisonville
Blue Valley Northwest halted a 13-game losing streak with a 34-28, overtime win at Harrisonville, Missouri.
The Huskies rallied from down 14 points in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Northwest drove to the 1-yard line with 4:30 remaining only to come up empty on 4th-and-goal at the 1.
After forcing a short Harrisonville punt out their end zone, the Huskies took over with great field position at the Wildcat 25. Northwest scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Mikey Pauley to Evan Ranallo with 2:14 remaining, but the PAT was blocked keeping the deficit at 28-20.
Blue Valley Northwest got the onside kick and took over at the Harrisonville 48-yard line with 2:12 remaining. A few plays later, Edward Thomas scored from 3 yards out with 1:06 left in the game to pull within 28-26.
The Huskies then tied the game with a successful two-point conversion on a reverse pass to force overtime.
Harrisonville only gained 1-yard on four downs in their overtime possession.
Beginning at the 25-yard line, Pauley tossed an 11-yard gain to Markell Hood. On the next play, Pauley hit Ranallo on the game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass to Ranallo in the right corner of the end zone to spoil Harrisonville’s homecoming.
The Huskies overcame an incredible performance from Harrisonville sophomore Jace Reynolds, who reportedly had 53 carries for 346 yards and 4 touchdowns.

CLASS 5A
Maize South continues regular season winning streak
Last season, Maize South opened 0-3 with losses to Wichita Heights and Andover in the first two games.
Since, the Mavericks have won eight straight regular season contests, including a win against Heights last week, and 14-7 versus Andover on Friday.
Maize South led 14-0 at halftime and after three quarters. Colin Shields threw TD passes of five and six yards to Justice Morris.
Andover has now lost two games by a combined 10 points.

Great Bend rolls over Hays High
The Panthers defeated Hays High, 46-30, in the longtime Western Athletic Conference rivalry.
The game was not as close as the final score as Great Bend, a week after the “Miracle at Morton” 13-10 overtime win against Andover, led 39-0 midway through the third quarter.
Dalton Miller had a huge game as Great Bend’s quarterback with 148 rushing yards, and 7 of 9 passing for 61 yards.

CLASS 4A
Paola dominates Fort Scott again, 58-0
A year after dismantling Fort Scott, Paola did it again on Friday night.
The Panthers traveled to Frary Field and came away with a 58-0 win on Friday night
After opening the scoring with a safety thanks to an errant Fort Scott snap, Paola scored six touchdowns, three in each quarter, in taking a 44-0 lead into halftime.
Fletcher Aude scored his first of three touchdowns to get the scoring started by the Panther offense.
Evan Phillips rushed for a pair of scores and caught a touchdown pass from Garrett Williams.
Connor Hasz and Kaden Shay also added touchdown runs for the Panthers.

Bishop Miege cruises past Blue Valley West
Bishop Miege, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, put up more than 460 yards of total offense in defeating Blue Valley West, 48-21.
Miege quarterback Timothy Dorsey passed for 296 yards and five touchdowns as the Stags won their eighth consecutive game.
Dorsey threw touchdown passes to four different receivers in the first half as the Stags built a 27-14 lead.
Brison Cobbins rushed for a score, and Dorsey connected with Phillippe Wesley for a second time in the end zone to build the Miege lead to 41-14 after three quarters.
Cobbins finished with 119 yards rushing and two touchdowns in addition to his touchdown catch.
Mack Moeller caught five passes for 116 yards and a score, while Wesley had 97 receiving yards, and Daniel Jackson caught six balls for 76 yards and a score.
Riley Cummings, Dejean Price, and David Brown all scored touchdowns for Blue Valley West.

Andover Central routs Eisenhower
Andover Central traveled to Goddard and came away with a convincing 33-2 win over Eisenhower.
The game started like a pitcher’s dual – with each team exchanging safeties for a 2-2 score.
Andover Central then took the lead for good on a touchdown run by Shomari Purnell.
The Jaguar defense then got on the board again as Trey DeGarmo returned a fumble for a score and a 15-2 lead. The Jaguar defense forced yet another safety, and Xavier Bell took the pitch on a reverse and launched a long touchdown pass to Matthew Macy for a 24-2 lead.

CLASS 3A
Hayden blasts Topeka Seaman, 54-7
A year after being shutout in a 13-0 loss to rival Topeka Seaman, the Hayden Wildcats scored eight touchdowns in a 54-7 rout of the Vikings.
Hayden did most of its damage after halftime; scoring 40 points to blow the game open.
The Wildcats led 14-0 at the break after touchdown runs by Will DeVader and Jack Konrade. DeVader would score twice more in the third quarter, and Desmond Purnell returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown to add to the lead.
Purnell would later add a touchdown run.

Scott City holds off Holcomb
In one of the week’s marquee matchups, Scott City defeated rival Holcomb, 14-3, in a Greater West Activities Conference game.
Scott City has not allowed a touchdown yet this year.
Parker Gooden, who switched from quarterback to running back this year, gave the final separation with a three-yard run with 2:12 left in the contest.
Scott City is ranked No. 5 in Class 3A.

Rock Creek’s streak ends at 10
Rock Creek ended a 10-game losing streak with a dominating 44-6 win over St. Marys.
Skyler Forge had a big night in rushing for four touchdowns, and the Mustang defense held the Bears to less than 15 yards rushing.
Rock Creek’s victory was also the first for new head coach Shane Sieben.

CLASS 2A
Plainville 21, Phillipsburg 14 in Kpreps Game of the Week
In the Kpreps Game of the Week, Plainville had its second straight comeback and defeated Phillipsburg, 21-14. The Cardinals did not lead the game until 1:08 remained in the contest when senior quarterback Jordan Finnesy scored on a 15-yard run.
Phillipsburg is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, and Plainville is No. 2 in Class 1A. The Cardinals ended Phillipsburg’s 14-game winning streak, and defeated the Panthers for the first time since 2011. Phillipsburg had its first regular season loss since 2015.
The game was scoreless after the first quarter, and Phillipsburg took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ty Sides to Kagan Keeten. Then, Plainville tied the score on a 25-yard pass from Jordan Finnesy to Jared Casey.
Phillipsburg took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter on a one-yard run from Sides. Then, Plainville tied the score on a 12-yard pass from Finnesy to Casey.
Casey recorded more than 90 yards rushing and receiving, and Sides exceeded 100 rushing yards. Plainville also had a highly successful sno cone fundraiser for an 11-year-old Phillipsburg girl who recently went into a coma and had a brain aneurism.

Hoisington races past Nickerson on a milestone night
Hoisington coach Zach Baird picked up his 50th career win as the Cardinals flew past Nickerson, 40-13.
All three of Mason Haxton’s pass attempts in the first half went for touchdowns as the Cardinals built a 34-13 lead. Haxton ended with four touchdown passes on the night.
Senior back Wyatt Pedigo eclipsed the 3,000-yard career rushing mark during the game.
Hoisington will likely move up to No. 1 in Class 2A after top-ranked Phillipsburg and third-ranked Conway Springs were both beaten on Friday night.

Cheney pulls upset against Conway Springs
Class 2A had another big upset on Friday when No. 3 Conway Springs lost, 49-19, at Cheney.
Cheney’s Riley Petz scored six total touchdowns in the victory. Petz rushed for three scores, caught a pair of touchdown passes, and returned an interception 95-yards for another score.
Cheney is 1-1 after a 35-19 loss to Garden Plain last week. The Cardinals were just 2-7 a season ago, including a 28-7 loss to Conway Springs.

TMP wins Ellis County rivalry
Thomas More Prep defeated Ellis, 19-16, and won in the series for the third straight season.
TMP led 6-0 early before Ellis took a 7-6 lead. However, the Monarchs took a 12-7 lead, before Ellis took a 14-12 lead and extended the lead to 16-12 late in the third quarter.
TMP scored the winning touchdown with 1:56 left on a touchdown run by Bryce Seib.

Ellinwood defeats Sublette 50-20 on a scoreboard-less homecoming night
Fans attending Ellinwood’s 50-20 victory over the Sublette Larks will appreciate a scoreboard much more now. During the week, school officials noticed that the scoreboard at Ellinwood’s football field wasn’t working properly. After looking inside, they found fried components, which was determined to be caused by a lightning strike. The game still went on, with the time and score of the game being announced periodically over the loudspeakers.
The scoring started out when Ellinwood’s Christoffer Nielson nailed a 35-yd field goal. The Swedish foreign exchange student would later make four of six extra point attempts.
Sublette would answer quickly with a touchdown pass from Brice Williamson to Dylan Watson. The completed 2-point conversion would put the Larks up 8-3, but that was the only time Sublette led.
Homecoming King David Hammeke returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to the house.
Quarterback Kyler Doll then connected with Hammeke on two consecutive touchdown passes of 15 and 39 yards. Hammeke would then add a rushing touchdown and another receiving score from 45 yards out before suffering an injury in the fourth quarter.
Sublette back on the board when Ace Martinez threw a 65-yd touchdown pass to Miguel Hernandez.
Doll found a new target in Cody Zink and sent a 55-yd touchdown his way for Zink’s first varsity touchdown.
Sublette got another big boost as Albie Perez took a kickoff return 80 yards to the house on the ensuing play. Ellinwood settled the score as Eli Hernandez ran 47 yards for the final score of the game.
Ellinwood snaps a five-game losing streak, and will face Ellis next week at home.

Northeast blanks Yates Center, 36-0
Northeast-Arma picked up its first win on the field in a long time on Friday as the Vikings topped Yates Center, 36-0
Northeast picked up a forfeit win over Oskaloosa in the Week 9 non-bracket game a year ago, but prior to that hadn’t been victorious on the field since beating Southeast-Cherokee 34-24 on October 9, 2015.

CLASS 1A
La Crosse opens 2-0 without key lineman
In fall camp, coach Jon Webster was highly complementary of senior lineman Kalen Thielenhaus.
However, Thielenhaus is out with a season-ending injury, but the Leopards defeated Ellinwood, 63-19, in Week 1, and beat Russell, 14-12, on Friday. La Crosse was 3-6 last season, including a 50-12 loss at Russell.

8-Man, Division I
Victoria defeats Central Plains
Victoria sophomore quarterback Grant Schoenrock rushed for more than 200 yards as the Knights defeated Central Plains, 50-14, at home.
Central Plains went 13-0 last season, but is 0-2 this year after significant graduation losses. Victoria improved to 2-0.
The Knights led 22-0 midway through the second quarter, and 30-8 at halftime.

Hodgeman County defeats Medicine Lodge
Hodgeman County produced nearly 300 yards rushing in a 48-28 win over Medicine Lodge.
Senior Eli Salmans led the Longhorns on the ground with 185 yards and three scores on 26 carries.
Isaac Salmans added 82 rushing yards and three scores, but also passed for 103 yards and a touchdown.

South Central shuts down Spearville
South Central blanked Spearville, 45-0, in a matchup of two projected playoff teams.
The fourth-ranked T-Wolves pulled away thanks to 31 points in the second quarter.
Quarterback Chayde Snyder rushed for 111 yards and three scores and added 74 yards passing and three touchdowns – all to Jonny Robles.
The Timberwolves picked up a key win as the begin a difficult portion of their schedule that includes a showdown with No. 3 Hodgeman County next week.
South Central’s Gage Girk connected on a 47-yard field goal in this game.

8-Man, Division II
Osborne out runs Hoxie
Osborne built a 40-6 halftime lead in rolling past Hoxie, 54-26
The Bulldogs rushed for more than 310 yards in the game including seven rushing touchdowns.
Darrien Holloway led Osborne with 157 yards and three scores on the ground, while sophomore Mason Schurr added 57 yards and three scores.
Steele Wolters added 87 yards rushing and a touchdown.

6-MAN FOOTBALL
Deerfield ends long losing streak
Congratulations to the Deerfield Spartans for snapping a 27-game losing streak with a 39-24 victory over Cunningham.
Deerfield’s last official victory came by virtue of a forfeit by Fowler on October 16, 2015; however, the Spartans last on-field win came a couple of weeks earlier when they defeated Rolla, 76-40, on October 2, 2015.
