Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Olathe North topped Olathe Northwest 21-0. Jevon Parrish ran for all three touchdowns. The Eagles improved to 4-3.
Garden City got back on the winning track with a 40-9 victory over Dodge City. Quinton LaPointe rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Garret Doll passed for about 190 yards and a touchdown. The Buffaloes improved to 6-1 after falling 36-23 to Wichita Northwest last week.
Haysville Campus improved to 4-3 with a convincing 35-7 win over Hutchinson. Colts senior quarterback Federico Harvey passed for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. It was Haysville Campus’ first win over Hutchinson since 1999. Hutchinson’s record fell to 5-2 on the season.
Washburn Rural capitalized on six turnovers to defeat Topeka Seaman 35-21. Sophomore Jaylen Carter rushed for 131 yards and returned an interception for a touchdown. Quarterback Michael Schurig passed for 119 yards.
The Blue Valley West Jaguars picked up their first win of the season with a 31-26 victory over Gardner-Edgerton. Senior quarterback Keaton Goodale rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Jaguars. Gardner-Edgerton got the ball back with just over a minute to go, but an interception sealed the game for Blue Valley West.
Class 5A:
Kapaun Mount Carmel scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime, then defeated St. James Academy 28-27. St. James led 13-0 entering the fourth quarter before Kapaun started their big come back. In overtime, the Crusaders scored first to take a 7-point lead. The Thunder scored on its overtime possession as well, but the PAT was low and blocked. Nick Channel rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown for Kapaun, while Jack Petz rushed for 101 yards and two scores for St. James.
Ceasar Burciaga kicked a 23-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining to lift Liberal to a 23-21 victory at Great Bend. The Redskins led for only the final nine seconds of the game as Great Bend controlled the first half producing a 14-0 lead. Liberal’s Cyris Dunlap broke an 82-yard run to pull within 14-7 in the third quarter, but Dalton Mill answered to put the Panthers back up 21-7. Dunlap and Burciaga each scored fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Burciaga’s PAT missed leaving the Panthers in front 21-20 until the final field goal. Dunlap rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Maize quietly improved to 6-1 with a 39-14 victory over winless Salina Central. Dalyn Johnson rushed for 113 yards and three scores on 22 carries to lead the Eagles. Quarterback Caleb Grill passed for 192 yards and a touchdown, including 82 yards to Deriq Doty. Salina Central has now lost 16 consecutive games.
Mill Valley held off Blue Valley North 35-30 on Thursday night to improve to 3-4 on the season. The Jaguars built a 21-10 halftime lead on the strength of two Brody Flaming touchdown runs. Mill Valley then pushed the lead to 28-10 before the Mustangs pulled within 28-23. Logan Talley then scored to put the Jaguars up 35-23 in the fourth quarter.
Class 4A-I:
Wamego executed a two-point conversion in overtime to defeat Abilene 28-27. The Red Raiders tied the game in the fourth quarter with an 88-yard touchdown drive, but they failed to take the lead by missing the extra point. In overtime, Wamego went for two points and Adler Pierson scored to secure the win.
Jacob Adams made a 32-yard field goal with 3:30 remaining, and Chanute defeated Coffeyville 30-28. The Blue Comets held a 27-6 halftime lead, but Coffeyville scored the game’s next 22 points. Corbett Kimberlin led Chanute with two touchdown runs.
Fort Scott scored 21 points in the third quarter and defeated Louisburg 42-20. It was Fort Scott’s first win over Louisburg since the 2005 postseason. The Tigers were led by Zarek Fewell with 214 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries.
Paola opened district play with a 24-0 win over Ottawa. The Panthers led only 3-0 at halftime, but they broke the game open in the second half. Senior running back Colton Gleghorn scored on a 63-yard touchdown run, and senior quarterback Kurt Golubski rushed for a pair of touchdowns.
Class 4A-II:
Burlington rolled to a 50-14 district-opening victory over Iola. The Wildcats were led by senior quarterback Connor Jeffers who rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns and added 62 pass yards and two more scores. Cael Johnson and Jacob Hawkins each caught touchdown passes from Jeffers.
Clay Center scored 35 points in the first half in taking a commanding 35-8 lead over Chapman. The Tigers went on to win 48-8 to pick up their first district win. Clay Center rushed for 361 yards in the game and scored all seven touchdowns on the ground. Peyton Lane led Clay Center with 145 yards and four scores while Caleb Mendum and Levi Pfizenmaier added 88 and 82 yards, respectively.
Nickerson doubled-up Wichita Trinity 70-35 on Friday night. Trinity quarterback Sam Hardin passed for 408 yards and five touchdowns, but the Knights could not slow down the Nickerson rushing attack. Caden Williams caught 14 passes for 239 yards and all five scores for the Knights. The Panthers host Wichita Collegiate this week before closing the season at Clearwater.
Concordia scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter and converted a two-point conversion to beat Goodland, 20-19. Goodland had a chance on the final play but missed a field goal. The Panthers and Cowboys were tied at 6 at halftime, but Goodland took a 19-12 lead after three quarters.
Class 3A:
Riley County bounced back from its Silver Lake loss to upend Minneapolis, 53-0, to open district action. Ty Nelson had 10 carries for 97 yards and three scores. He had a 38-yard pick-six in the second quarter. Riley County scored 26 points in the second quarter to lead 33-0 at halftime. Riley County forced six turnovers. The 6-1 Falcons rushed for 312 yards and five scores.
Norton moved to 6-1 with a 31-7 victory at Russell to start District 14. The Bluejays led 12-0 at halftime. Russell recovered the second half kickoff off a Norton fumble and scored on a 10-yard pass from Austin Price to Travis Tammen. The Bluejays responded with three scores in the third quarter. Norton held a 393-131 yardage edge. Tevin Petrie had 25 carries for 154 yards and two scores. Jace Ruder accounted for three scores and 235 total yards, 135 rushing.
Caney Valley rebounded from last week’s loss to Cherryvale by beating Eureka, 54-0. The shutout was Caney’s third of the season as the Bullpups give up less than nine points per game. The Bullpups, now 5-2 on the season, are looking for their eighth consecutive playoff appearance.
Class 2-1A:
Ell-Saline defeated winless Republic County, 27-8, to stay perfect this year. Ell-Saline trailed 8-7 at halftime but received three rushing scores from Nick Davenport. The quarterback put the Cardinals ahead with a one-yard run with 42 seconds left in the third quarter. He tallied runs for 57 and 87 yards for scores. Davenport finished with 179 rushing yards.
In District 7, La Crosse held off Ellis for a 19-6 victory and its fifth straight victory. Ellis lost its fourth consecutive contest, though the four teams have a combined four losses. The Leopards led 13-0 in the first quarter. Hunter Morgan rushed in from a yard out for the first score after he completed a long pass to Brett Herrman. La Crosse completed a 50-yard pass on third-and-long to the Ellis 10-yard line. Christian Suppes later scored for the second TD. Ellis closed to 13-6 late in the third quarter but the Leopards capped a 72-yard drive with a 17-yard run by Zak Brown. Morgan picked off Ellis inside the last minute to secure the victory.
Plainville beat Oakley, 39-0, to start District 7 play. Sophomore Jared Casey, another standout lineman, replaced all-state lineman Hayden Gillum at fullback. Gillum had moved back to fullback earlier in the year. He rushed for scores from 37 and one yard and had a pick-six. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Finnesy threw for 88 yards and a score and rushed for 96 yards and a TD.
Class 8-man I
Hill City still remains alive in District 8 that also includes No. 4 St. Francis, No. 5 Hoxie and Atwood-Rawlins County. Those three teams went 1-1 against each other for their only losses of the year. Hill City moved to 5-2, 3-1 in district play with a 53-50 win against Oberlin. The Ringnecks close with Hoxie and Atwood the next two weeks. Ethan Hamel completed 18 of 22 passes for 270 yards and three TDs. Dalton Stephen tallied 178 rushing yards and three scores.
West Elk continued to roll with a 48-8 win against Sedan. The Patriots have defeated St. Paul and Sedan the last two weeks. Senior Cade Miller completed 5 of 10 passes for 201 yards with two scores against two interceptions. He rushed 12 times for 107 yards and two TDs. Junior William Silvey finished with 16 carries for 114 yards and a TD. Silvey also caught three passes for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Madison led 28-8 before Southern Coffey County closed the gap. The Bulldogs delivered a 28-24 victory. For Madison, Nassun Wasson opened the game for a 70-yard kickoff for a score. Following a SCC fumble, Wasson caught a 50-yard pass from Stephen Stutesman. Wasson tallied a 10-yard run for a 20-8 lead. Stutesman bumped the lead to 28-8 in the third quarter off a one-yard run. Madison and No. 1-ranked Burlingame, which did not play each other, shared the Lyon County League title. Madison went 4-0 and Burlingame is 3-0.
Class 8-man II
Lebo defeated an improved Altoona-Midway team, 72-8, in a game that ended at halftime. Lebo had more than 300 yards overall and put up 44 points in the first quarter. Brian Reese threw for a score and rushed for three touchdowns on runs of six, four and 48 yards. Lebo had a scoop-and-score off a fumble and a pick-six.
Stockton, a district champion in 2016, earned its first victory of the year with a 60-6 home win against Wilson and set up a critical contest versus district front runner Northern Valley this week. The Tigers had 30 points in each of the first two quarters. Junior quarterback Brady Beougher rushed 14 times for 220 yards and two scores. Junior Jalen Basart had 10 carries for 68 yards and four touchdowns.
Ingalls defeated Rolla, 52-0, in a game that ended at halftime. The 5-2 Bulldogs tallied 30 points in the first quarter and 22 in the second. Freshman Tate Davis completed 3 of 5 passes for 110 yards with two scores against no interceptions. Senior Mikel Osborne had 15 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown.
South Barber raced to 30 points in the first quarter in beating Stafford, 52-6. Quarterback Trevor Rooks accounted for six touchdowns to lead the Chieftains. Rooks threw four touchdowns passes and rushed for two more scores.
KCAA
Veritas Christian rolled to a 52-6 win over Cair Paravel by scoring 30 points in the third quarter. Quinton Donohoe led the Eagles with a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown. Jaylon Hitsman added two scores on the ground for Veritas. The Eagles improved to 5-2 overall with the victory.
6-Man
Pawnee Heights finished off an unbeaten 6-Man regular season with a 63-0 win over Fowler. The Tigers are now 7-0 with three shutouts and a forfeit victory. Pawnee Heights has only given up points in three games with 26 of their 38 points allowed coming in a win over Cheylin.
