Kpreps.com, the most comprehensive high school football website in Kansas, is about to kick off its 10th season.
Readers can expect the same reliable and entertaining coverage they have become accustomed to as teams across Kansas prepare to begin the 2017-18 school year.
The website was the brainchild of Kpreps Co-founders Matt Gilmore and Andy Wachter, who noticed that schools from various parts of the state received little or no media coverage from newspapers, radio, or television.
“We set out with a goal to develop a site that would approach high school sports from a statewide perspective,” Gilmore said. “We wanted to create a community for Kansas high school sports where players, coaches, parents, fans, and media across the state could visit and access as much information as they wanted.
“I’m not sure we ever anticipated that it would become such a popular resource.”
Kpreps started during the 2008 football season, offering schedules and results for every team in Kansas. Even though the publication planned to maintain a low profile that season to ensure a high level of quality, the news about the fledgling website quickly spread to high school football fans throughout the state.
“We initially tried to keep a low profile and ensure we had a well-designed and accurate product to promote,” Co-founder Andy Wachter said. “About midway through that first season someone discovered the site, and the traffic really took off from nowhere overnight.”
Since that inaugural season, Kpreps’ audience and coverage has continued to grow.
In addition to schedules and results for every team, Kpreps now provides news, features, photos, district and league standings, and rankings coverage for every classification. Kpreps has also increased its digital offering over the years with podcasts and video.
Postseason coverage includes All-State teams for each class, as well as the annual Kpreps.com Dylan Meier Player of the Year award.
Kpreps’ archives provide readers access to stories from past seasons, as well as season-by-season results for each team all the way back to the 2008 season. In recent years, Kpreps has entertained expanding its coverage to other sports.
For the 2017 football season, Kpreps will publish state rankings on Mondays; Around the Classes on Tuesdays; a statewide feature on Wednesdays; a list of game and player predictions on Thursdays; a Game of the Week preview, the Kpreps Kansas Pregame Radio Show, and the announcement of the Friday Night Photo Contest winner on Fridays; the Subway Friday Fresh Take on Saturdays; and the Kpreps Helmet Stickers awards on Sundays.
