Not one, but two No. 1 teams lost in Week 5 action. We also had the state’s longest current win streak come to an end. What all does it mean? Here’s a look at the Kpreps Top 5 for Week 6.
There were no changes to the top five in Class 6A this week. Top-ranked Derby blasted traditional 5A power Bishop Carroll 49-13. The Panthers shut out Carroll 21-0 in the second half on the way to their 15th consecutive victory. Second-ranked Blue Valley shut out new Eastern Kansas League member St. James Academy 45-0, while No. 3 Shawnee Mission East blasted Shawnee Mission North, 77-26. Junction City remains at No. 4 this week after a 42-12 win over Topeka Highland Park. The Blue Jays host their rival No. 5 Manhattan this week. Manhattan handed previously unbeaten Topeka Seaman a 42-21 loss on Friday.
In Class 5A, Mill Valley lost for the second consecutive week. This time the Jaguars fell 40-33 to St. Thomas Aquinas on a late touchdown pass. Mill Valley drops to No. 4 in this week’s poll, while Aquinas jumps from No. 5 to No. 2 this week. The Jaguars loss means Wichita Heights ascends to the top spot in Class 5A after beginning the season unranked. The Falcons rolled to a 60-7 win over winless Wichita North on Friday. Great Bend remains in the No. 3 spot this week after a 42-21 win over Wichita West. The Panthers travel to Wichita again this week to take on the East Blue Aces. Meanwhile, Bishop Carroll remains in the rankings at No. 5 despite the Eagles’ 36-point loss to Derby.
Bishop Miege remains atop the 4A-I poll for a 34th consecutive week. The Stags rolled to a 54-7 victory over Blue Valley West last week, and host 5A defending champion Mill Valley in Week 6. Andale remains ranked second this week after a 61-20 win over Clearwater. Third-ranked Louisburg cruised to a fifth straight victory by beating Baldwin 36-8. Basehor-Linwood remained unbeaten with an impressive 45-16 win at Bonner Springs. Maize South replaces Mulvane in the poll at No. 5 spot after defeating the Wildcats 38-35 on Friday. The Mavericks will host winless Winfield in Week 6.
Defending champion Holcomb trailed Colby entering the fourth quarter only to score three times and beat the Eagles, 27-13. Frontenac remains ranked second in 4A-II. The Raiders beat Southeast-Cherokee 70-0 on Friday in a game they led 49-0 after the first quarter. Columbus remains ranked third this week after the Titans pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 35-14 at Prairie View. Fourth-ranked Wichita Collegiate cruised to a 52-0 win against Wellington. The Spartans travel to 4A-I No. 2 Andale in Week 6. Finally, Santa Fe Trail scored with 16 seconds left to top Wellsville 26-21. Peyton Newton led the Chargers with 222 rushing yards and two scores.
In the War on 24, Silver Lake held off Rossville 36-28 to end theH Bulldawgs’ 32-game winning streak. Silver Lake takes over the top spot this week, while Rossville drops to No. 3 in the poll behind the Hoisington Cardinals. Hoisington ran away from Pratt (then No. 5 in 4A-II), 32-14. Phillipsburg remains ranked No. 4 in Class 3A. The Panthers ended an emotional week with a 56-14 victory over Ellis. Garden Plain is No. 5 for a second consecutive week. The Owls built a 42-0 lead against Belle Plaine before trading touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 56-20 win.
Troy opened district play with a 62-28 win over rival Doniphan West. The top-ranked Trojans remain in district play this week against McLouth. Plainville remains No. 2 this week after the Cardinals outscored Republic County 58-28. Lyndon stays in the No. 3 spot after beating Council Grove 26-8 in a battle of previously unbeaten teams in the Flint Hills League. Meanwhile, fourth-ranked Smith Center rolled to a 43-14 win over Oakley. Washington County jumps back into the poll at No. 5 after the Tigers beat last week’s No. 5, Jackson Heights, 22-14 in district play.
In 8M-I, St. Francis and Spearville remain neck-and-neck for the top two spots. St. Francis again gets the slight nod, but the Indians have a challenge this week against rival Atwood-Rawlins County. Spearville rolled to an easy victory over pass-happy South Gray, while Burlingame had little trouble with Onaga. Osborne, ranked fourth, throttled Solomon 58-8, and No. 5 Central Plains shut out Canton-Galva 50-0.
Hanover remains on top in 8M-II with a 50-0 blanking of Wetmore. Hodgeman County opened district play with a 56-8 win over Tribune-Greeley County. Pike Valley moves up one spot to No. 3 this week after a 68-6 win over Southern Cloud. The Panthers are able to move up because of Otis-Bison’s loss to Sharon Springs-Wallace County. The Wildcats beat Otis-Bison 28-20 to open district play, and return to the rankings at No. 4 this week. Caldwell retains the No. 5 spot in this week’s poll after a 74-0 blowout of Burrton.
