The regular season is complete. District champions have been crowned. It’s time for the playoffs.
As in previous years, we’ll continue with our Kpreps Rankings each Monday throughout the playoffs. Here’s a look at the Kpreps Rankings for November 2nd. As always, check out the Rankings tab for complete recaps of each ranked team.
In Class 6A, Lawrence completed a perfect regular season by rushing for nearly 500 yards in a 47-8 win over Olathe East. Shawnee Mission East remains at No. 2 this week after winning a surprising shootout with Shawnee Mission North, 56-34. Wichita Northwest completed a 9-0 regular season with a 28-21 win over Hutchinson. Kevin Folsom passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns to help the third-ranked Grizzlies capture the District 8 championship. Derby remains at No. 4 this week after a 56-28 win over Wichita West. Finally, Olathe North enters the poll this week after beating Olathe Northwest 19-13. Eagle running back Vinnie Shabazz carried 42 times for 270 yards and a touchdown in the win. Olathe North replaces Topeka High at No. 5 after the Trojans were shut out 21-0 at Lawrence Free State.
In Class 5A, Mill Valley and Bishop Carroll remain No. 1 and No. 2 in the poll. St. Thomas Aquinas remains ranked-third in this week’s poll after a dominating 35-3 win over Pittsburg. The Purple Dragons drop one spot in this week’s poll after the loss to Aquinas. St. James Academy comes in at No. 4 in the poll this week after the Thunder beat Bonner Springs 26-7 to advance to the playoffs.
Bishop Miege remains atop the Class 4A-I poll after a 75-0 blowout over KC Sumner Academy. Second-ranked Buhler rushed for more than 360 yards in a 21-7 win over previously-unbeaten Abilene. With the loss, Abilene barely falls out of this week’s poll. They are replaced with the team they’ll play in the first round of the playoffs; the Ulysses Tigers. Ulysses went on the road and beat Wellington 36-6 to win a district championship. Topeka Hayden and Paola remain ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in the poll, respectively.
The top four teams remain unchanged in the Class 4A-II poll this week. The only change in the top five comes in the No. 5 spot where Osawatomie drops out of the poll after a 40-21 loss to Santa Fe Trail. Frontenac obtains just enough votes to slip into the No. 5 spot in this week’s poll. The Raiders beat Baxter Springs 33-0 and will travel to Girard in the first round of the 4A-II playoffs.
The “War on 24” turned into a shootout as No. 1 Rossville beat No. 5 Silver Lake 56-35 behind an unbelievable performance from Tucker Horak. The Rossville senior quarterback rushed for 384 yards and seven touchdowns in the win and threw for more than 130 yards and another score. Silver Lake pulled to within 35-29 in the third quarter before Horak scored three consecutive times. Despite the loss, our voters kept Silver Lake in this week’s top five, but the gap is close to teams like Nemaha Central and Hoisington sitting just outside the top five.
A pair of teams trading placed account for the only change in this week’s Class 2-1A poll. Phillipsburg rallied for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Smith Center 14-7. The Panthers and Redmen trade places in the poll this week with Phillipsburg moving up to No. 3, and Smith Center dropping to No. 4.
All five teams posted big victories as the 8M-I poll remains unchanged this week. Top-ranked Spearville blasted South Gray, while No. 2 Central Plains shut out Goessel. Hanover scored 72 points behind a 366-yard, 7-touchdown performance from Will Bruna. Burlingame remains at No. 4 and St. Francis at No. 5 this week.
The 8M-II poll also remains the same this week despite a top five match-up. Top-ranked Victoria and No. 5 Otis-Bison were tied at 22 before the Knights scored 46 consecutive points to win 68-22. Second-ranked Sharon Springs-Wallace County and third-ranked Argonia-Attica each rolled to blowout wins, while No. 4 Axtell beat Linn by 50 points.
