Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Topeka High cruised to a 37-7 win at Shawnee Heights on Friday. Mike McCoy rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the Trojans. Corey Thomas passed for 89 yards and two touchdowns and added 144 yards rushing with one score.
Wayne Shirley connected on a 27-yard field goal in overtime to lift Junction City to a 17-14 win at Manhattan. Manhattan got the first possession in overtime and appeared to score on a fourth-and-1 sneak, but quarterback Ian Trapp was ruled down and the Indians came away without points setting up Shirley’s winning kick. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten on the season and reclaim the Silver Trophy back from the Indians. Friday’s final marks the seventh consecutive time the game has been decided by fewer than 10 points.
Blue Valley North clinched at least a share of the Eastern Kansas League title with a 42-7 win over Gardner-Edgerton. A week after rallying late to upset Blue Valley 28-27, the Mustangs jumped out to a 28-0 lead in rolling past the Trailblazers. Quarterback Joey Dolan was nearly perfect in completing 15 of 16 passes for 246 yards and five touchdowns. Josh Pederson caught five passes for 99 yards and two scores, while Alex Blake’s four receptions covered 65 yards and reached the end zone twice.
Hutchinson jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in beating Salina Central, 26-7. The Salthawks held the Mustangs’ standout running back Dalton Peters to 91 rushing yards on 19 carries. Hutch rushed for 288 yards in the game, and quarterback Canyon Maldonado passed for 115 yards and two scores.
Dodge City raced out to a 35-0 lead in beating Hays, 37-3. Quarterback Caden Walters completed 14 of 24 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns for the Red Demons. Walters connected with Eric Reid for touchdown passes of 71, 61, and 52 yards on Dodge City’s first three plays from scrimmage.
Class 5A:
Goddard-Eisenhower rallied from a 12-0 deficit to tie the game at halftime then outscored Valley Center 13-7 the rest of the way for a 25-19 win. Joseph Weibel rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers. Isziah Hurtt led Valley Center with 129 rush yards with one score.
Bonner Springs improved to 6-0 with a 55-6 rout of Tonganoxie. The Braves scored 21 points in the first quarter and led 35-0 at halftime. Quarterback Connor Byers passed for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Byers also rushed for 108 yards and three more scores. Michael Amayo caught three passes for 119 yards and all three scores from Byers.
Kapaun Mount Carmel scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters en route to a 28-7 win over Wichita North. Brock Monty completed 17 of 36 passes for 294 yards and three scores for the Crusaders. Monty added 34 rush yards and a touchdown.
Emporia doubled up Topeka Seaman 40-20 to improve to 3-3 on the season. The Spartans and Vikings were tied at 13 at halftime before Emporia outscored Seaman 27-7 in the second half. Tanner Taylor rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 71 more yards for the Spartans.
Blue Valley West held off EKL rival Blue Valley Northwest 38-35 to claim their second win of the season. Jake Kidd led the Jaguars with 150 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Nathan Wiles rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown, and passed for 74 yards and another score.
Class 4A-I:
After falling behind 10-0 early, Augusta scored the next 58 points in beating Rose Hill 58-10. Chance Whitehead completed 12 of 16 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown for the Orioles. Luke Dockers led Augusta with 91 yards and two touchdowns. Four other Orioles rushed for touchdowns in the game.
Kaleb Shaffer passed for 110 yards and three touchdowns as Ottawa edged Santa Fe Trail, 19-16. Shaffer connected with Blaine Ray three times for 64 yards and two scores. Brock Reed also caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Shaffer.
Abilene clinched the North Central Kansas League championship with a 35-14 victory over Clay Center. Quarterback Harley Hazlett produced more than 325 yards of total offense in the Cowboy’s win. Hazlett passed for 144 yards and rushed for 182 more yards for Abilene. The Cowboys lead was just 21-14 after three quarters.
Labette County put away Riverton with a 21-point third quarter to secure a 41-7 win. Quarterback Logan Dean passed for 286 yards, including touchdown passes to Klein Ryan and Dominic Johnson. Ryan had six receptions for 117 yards and the score. Isiah McPherson rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies.
Basehor-Linwood scored 33 points in the first quarter in a 59-0 rout of Bishop Ward. Justin Phillips passed for 134 yards and three scores for the Bobcats. He threw touchdown passes to Chas Rollo, Jahron McPherson, and Eric Scott. Ten different Bobcats combined for 247 rush yards on just 24 carries.
Class 4A-II:
Wichita Trinity beat Conway Springs for the first time ever with a 47-22 victory on Friday night. Trinity scored in each quarter and put up 411 yards of total offense. Josh Osborne passed for 155 yards and two scores and rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Schroeder chipped in 101 yards and a touchdown for the Knights.
Frontenac rebounded from a Week 5 loss with a 33-6 win over Girard. The Raiders took a 21-6 lead into halftime and shut out the Trojans in the second half. Brandon Mlekus completed 14 of 18 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Mlekus also rushed for 84 yards and a score on seven carries.
Colby picked up its first win of the season by beating Norton, 20-7. Matthew Pieper rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. Brady Holzmeister connected with freshman Jordan Schippers on a touchdown pass to complete the Colby scoring.
Concordia shut out Wamego 27-0 to win its fourth game of the season. The Panthers led just 7-0 at the half before scoring 20 points in the third quarter. Concordia held Wamego to 16 rush yards on 16 carries
Parsons edged Chanute 27-20 in double overtime on Friday night. The Vikings switched to Donte Gress in the second half and Gress rushed for 124 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. Gress scored both touchdowns in the overtimes for the Vikings. Chanute faced a fourth-and-21 on the last play and could not connect on a pass near the goal line.
Class 3A:
Neodesha rebounded from a loss to Cherryvale last week with a 27-11 win over Burlington. The Blue Streaks got an early touchdown run from Colton Cunningham and took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Cunningham later hooked up with Kyle Savage on a halfback pass for a touchdown and a 21-3 lead. This was the last game for Burlington in the Tri-Valley League as the Wildcats will join the Pioneer League next season.
Cimarron rolled past Elkhart 52-14 in Hi-Plains League action. Blake Neuschafer rushed for four touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass from Nick Ast. Ast threw three touchdown passes on the night. Tyler Sklenar threw two touchdown passes to count for Elkhart’s scoring.
Riley County scored 16 points in the first quarter and held off Mid-East League rival St. Marys, 31-14. The Falcons rushed for 250 yards on the night including single touchdown runs by Garrett Staten, Wes March, and Tyler Halstead. Staten and March rushed for 97 and 95 yards, respectively.
Cherryvale clinched the Tri-Valley League title with a 37-6 win over Caney Valley. Lane Raida rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Charger ground attack which totaled 257 yards rushing. Raida also passed for 46 yards and two scores.
Northeast-Arma got a late turnover and a touchdown to hold off Southeast-Cherokee, 34-24. The Vikings led 27-12 before a pair of Chandler Jackson touchdown runs pulled the Lancers to within 27-24. Southeast had the ball driving for the lead when Northeast’s Clayton Bammer intercepted Lancer quarterback Caleb Fenimore. Shortly after, Drew Mills put the game away for the Vikings with a 42-yard touchdown run and a 34-24 lead.
Pleasant Ridge dominated Oskaloosa 38-6 to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Rams remain unbeaten in the Northeast Kansas League along with Maur Hill-Mount Academy. Brandon Broddle and Nick Homes each scored two touchdowns for Pleasant Ridge.
Class 2-1A:
Northern Heights upset then No. 5 Marion 34-24 on Friday night. The Wildcats trailed Marion 24-14 at halftime, but held the Warriors scoreless in the second half. Northern Heights quarterback Tucker Litke threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter to allow the Wildcats to take the lead. Trent Burd then put the game away with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Burd rushed for 158 yards and Litke passed for 147 yards and those two scores.
Bennington outscored Republic County 19-14 in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 32-26 win. The Bulldogs led 13-12 at halftime before the scoring barrage in the fourth quarter. T.J. Ragnoni rushed for 116 yards and three scores for the Bulldogs. Kyler Mick caught 143 of Jacob Stanley’s 146 passing yards including both touchdowns.
Plainville dropped traditional 2-1A power La Crosse to 2-4 on the season with a 38-20 district win. The Cardinals led 22-20 after three quarters then scored 16 points in the final quarter to put the game away. Junior quarterback Hayden Friend passed for 196 yards and two touchdowns for Plainville. Friend also rushed for two scores. Gabe Wilkens rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown for the Cardinals. La Crosse quarterback Clayton Herdman passed for 121 yards and rushed for 100 more yards totaling two touchdowns.
Jacob Faerber rushed for 246 yards and three touchdowns as Sacred Heart picked up a 47-14 district win over Inman. Freshman quarterback David Anderson passed for 92 yards and two scores for the Knights. Sacred Heart led 34-8 at halftime.
Syracuse outscored Sublette 30-0 in the second half to get its first win of the season, 44-6. Jason Ramos rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs. Syracuse hopes to duplicate 2014’s late season success where the Bulldogs won three of their last four games.
Class 8-Man I
After starting the season 0-4, the Kinsley Coyotes have won their first two district games. On Friday, Kinsley outscored Macksville 60-32. The Coyotes led the Mustangs 28-6 at halftime, and outscored Macksville 32-26 in the second half to hold on for the win.
St. Francis moved to 6-0 with a 50-0 blanking of Hill City on Friday night. The Indians held Hill City to 39 yards of total offense and shut down the Ringneck rushing attack to 31 yards on 25 carries. St. Francis scored 20 points in the first quarter and 30 more in the second quarter for the win.
Uniontown improved to 6-0 with a 56-8 homecoming win over Marmaton Valley. The Eagles clinched the Three Rivers League championship for the Eight-Man division with the win. Uniontown averages 54 points per game and has a district showdown at Marais des Cygnes Valley this week.
A 34-point second quarter proved to be the difference in Ellinwood’s 64-38 win over Goessel. Eagle quarterback Tyson Martinez passed for 248 yards and six touchdowns on the night. He connected with Jordan Duvall three times for three touchdowns. Duvall also rushed for 203 yards and three more scores. Kaleb Schartz added 110 yards rushing for Ellinwood.
Atwood-Rawlins County built a 40-12 lead at halftime and held on to beat Stockton 68-40. The Buffaloes and Tigers each scored 28 points in the second half. Cole Sramek rushed for 280 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries for Rawlins County. Sophomore Braden Leitner added 194 yards rushing and four touchdown on 19 carries for the Buffaloes, while classmate Will Crouse added 104 yards rushing and a touchdown. Stockton returned three kickoff returns for touchdowns to stay close. Brayden Winters returned to kicks for scores, while Joel Green brought back the other.
Class 8-Man II
Ashland improved to 5-1 with a 54-6 district win over Stafford. The Blue Jays built a 32-6 led at halftime and extended that lead to 48-6 at the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Reece Kay completed 7 of 12 passes for 266 yards and six touchdowns. All three of Kole Konrade’s receptions went for touchdowns covering 177 total yards. Konrade also rushed for 36 yards and a score. Josh Berryman added a pair of touchdown receptions totaling 68 yards.
Axtell won its fifth straight game with a 46-0 shutout of Southern Cloud. Sophomore quarterback Kaleb Buessing completed 4 of 5 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. Buessing also added a pair of touchdown runs. Junior Burke Deters and freshman Nate Buessing also rushed for touchdowns in the win.
Triplains-Brewster picked up a key victory in District 8 by beating Hoxie 12-6. Quarterback Ryan Gfeller passed for 104 yards and a touchdown and added 129 yards and a score on 21 carries. The win may be enough to propel the Titans into the second playoff spot.
South Barber outscored Norwich 32-12 in the second half to pull away for a 54-18 win. Grant Cantrell completed 7 of 8 passes for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Chieftains. Cantrell also rushed for 150 yards and a score on 27 carries. Freshman Neal Gugelmeyer added 110 rushing yards and three scores for South Barber.
Northern Valley broke open a close game with a big second half to defeat Thunder Ridge 52-20. The Huskies led 22-14 at halftime, but outscored the Longhorns 30-6 in the second half. Sophomore Caden Kinderknecht rushed for 207 yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries to lead Northern Valley. Kinderknecht also passed for 108 yards and two scores on 9 of 11 completions.
