Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Wichita South defeated Wichita East 32-16 on Friday night to remain unbeaten on the season. T.J. Turner caught two touchdowns passes and had over 100 yards receiving, and TreVaunte Hunt rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the Titans in the win.
Haysville Campus improved to 2-2 on the season with a 35-14 win over Maize. The Colts forced six Maize turnovers on the night. Noah Moody returned two interceptions for touchdowns for Campus.
Garden City took advantage of their size and ran to a 38-14 win over Hays in Western Athletic Conference play. Running back Jared Koster had three rushing touchdowns on the night, including two touchdown runs of more than 80 yards.
Junction City continued their winning ways and remained undefeated after a 40-0 shutout of Topeka Seaman. Raye Wilson and Jovon Baldwin combined to rush for five touchdowns and 259 yards in the win. It was the Blue Jays second consecutive shutout.
Dodge City quarterback Caden Walters scored by rushed for four touchdowns and passed for four more in a 69-0 shutout of Liberal. Walters rushed for three touchdowns in the first half as the Red Demons built a 41-0 lead. After halftime, Walters tossed two touchdown passes and rushed for another. He tossed touchdown passes to four different receives.
Class 5A:
The Valley Center Hornets picked up their third win of the season with a 20-14 victory over Andover. The Hornets’ three-win total matches their most wins in a single season in the past 12 seasons. Sophomore quarterback Wyatt Lange rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown, while junior Isziah Hurtt led Valley Center with 138 rushing yards and another score.
Maize South improved to 3-1 on the season after a 51-41 win in a shootout with Andover Central. Korie Frausto carried the Mavericks to victory, rushing for 347 yards and six touchdowns and throwing for 158 yards and another touchdown.
Kapaun Mount Carmel got back to its winning ways with a 31-21 win over Wichita West on a rainy Friday night. The Crusaders built a 28-0 lead but Wichita West took control of the game and the time of possession and battled back to within 28-21 before kicker Preston Williams nailed a 47-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Salina Central cruised to a 42-25 win over Goddard-Eisenhower and improved their record to 2-2 on the season. Salina Central’s Dalton Peters had six touchdowns, including a 92-yard kickoff return.
Salina South escaped with a 27-24 road win at Goddard on Friday. South’s Jacob Marcotte hauled in an interception at the Cougars’ 14 with 24 seconds remaining to end any chance of a last second win for the Lions.
Class 4A-I:
McPherson defeated Rose Hill 33-14 on Friday night. The Bullpups were led in rushing by Noah Jirgens with 98 yards, while teammate Austen Hunt added two rushing touchdowns.
Wellington has now won three games in a row after a 34-12 rout of Clearwater. Connor Phelps scored five touchdowns, four rushing, and had a game-high 217 rushing yards in the Crusader win.
Spring Hill earned its first win of the season 23-18 over Baldwin on Friday night. The Broncos took the lead early in the fourth quarter after a Roiel Swift 28-yard touchdown run. Spring Hill would put the game away after tackling Baldwin quarterback Garrett Burkhart in the end zone for a safety and the 23-18 win.
De Soto beat up Tonganoxie 26-6 on Friday to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Wildcat defense held Tonganoxie to just 23 yards rushing, while De Soto rushed for 180 yards. De Soto scored in each quarter to top the Chieftains.
Atchison improved to 4-0 with a 73-14 win over KC Harmon. The Redmen scored 20 points in the first quarter and 33 more in the second quarter. Wykeen Gill rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns and passed for two more scores to lead Atchison.
Class 4A-II:
Frontenac overcame an 11-point deficit to beat Galena 19-14. Caden Bollinger’s 73-yard touchdown run with 8:36 remaining proved to be the difference in the game as the Raiders took their first lead of the game at 17-14. Frontenac would add a safety later to secure the five-point win.
Goodland overcame a 19-12 deficit in the fourth quarter to post a 35-27 win over Hugoton. The Cowboys scored 23 points in the fourth quarter as Levi Archer threw three touchdown passes. Archer connected with Darian Kent, Luke Avila, and Nolan Deeds on the fourth quarter touchdown passes. Hugoton’s Valentino Degollado rushed for 169 yards and three scores. He also passed for 137 yards, but threw three interceptions.
Pratt held on for a 23-19 win over Kingman for their third win of the season. The Greenbacks led 20-6 going into the fourth quarter and had to hang on for the win. Freshman quarterback Travis Theis threw for 121 yards and one touchdown on just three completions. Theis also led the Greenbacks in rushing with 89 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
Wichita Trinity cruised to a 55-14 win over Belle Plaine to improve 3-1 on the season. The Knights were led by senior Joshua Osborne who rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns.
Perry-Lecompton got a big night from Mitchell Bond as the Kaws shutout Riverside, 33-0. Bond completed 14 of 22 pass attempts for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Cole Kellum rushed for 126 yards and a pair of scores for the Kaws.
Class 3A:
St. Mary’s Colgan won their third straight game and posted their second shutout in a row with a 44-0 rout of Southeast-Cherokee. Quarterback Ryan Cedeno accounted for four touchdowns as the Panthers scored five first-half touchdowns in the win. Kyle Steinmiller connected on a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter to finish off the scoring for the Panthers.
Conway Springs rolled Douglass on Friday night, 60-14. The Cardinals had four touchdowns of 30 yards or longer. Jacob Winter and Colton Terhune each had two touchdowns for the Cardinals.
Northeast-Arma rolled Oswego Indians 38-6 during their homecoming game. The Vikings were led by senior quarterback Drew Mills who rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Mills also passed for 88 yards. Troy Howard chipped in 92 rush yards and a score on six carries.
Riverton won their first game of the season on homecoming night with a 29-13 win over Baxter Springs. Grant North caught nine balls for 200 yards and two touchdowns in the win for the Rams. Quarterback Dylan Weaver completed 10 of 18 passes for 211 yards for the Rams.
West Franklin scored in each quarter as part of a 33-13 win over Herington. Nick Streeter rushed 27 times for 294 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Falcons. Streeter broke a 98-yard touchdown run that helped boost the box score on his big night. The Falcons and Railers were tied at 13 at halftime.
Class 2-1A:
Sublette squeaked out a 13-12 win over Lakin for the Larks second win of the season. Both teams scored a pair of touchdowns but the difference proved to be in the kicking game. Sublette successfully made one-of-two PAT’s whereas Lakin missed both of their attempts. Sabastian Morales led the Larks with 122 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Elkhart took control early against Leoti-Wichita County in their 33-6 win on Friday. Brady Lewis and Shon Villa scored a pair of touchdowns for the Wildcats. Villa rushed for 102 yards on 19 attempts, while Lewis added 56 yards on the ground.
Olpe improved to 2-2 on the season after a 44-0 shutout win over Central Heights. The Eagles totaled more than 400 yards of offense as Dylan Redeker and Andrew Burenheide rushed for a combined 206 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Jackson Heights outscored Oskaloosa 32-8 in the second half to post a 40-24 win. Oskaloosa led 16-8 at halftime before the Cobras scored 24 points in the third quarter. Despite the loss, Oskaloosa rushed for 270 yards in the game.
Troy built a 20-0 halftime lead and held off Onaga, 34-12. Quarterback Reid Greaser completed 11 of 17 attempts for 184 yards and three scores for the Trojans. Brody Winder added 114 yards rushing on four carries.
Class 8-Man I
Little River outscored Udall 24-14 in the fourth quarter en route to a 54-36 win over the Eagles. Clay Zeller rushed for 120 yards and three touchdowns and Levi Swenson added 87 yards rushing and three more scores for the Redskins. Nolan Williams led Udall with 174 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also passed for 187 yards and another score.
Mankato-Rock Hills outscored Wakefield on Friday for a 38-20 win. The Grizzlies were led by running back Spencer Callaway who rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Callaway also passed for 79 yards and two more scores.
South Central crushed Deerfield 52-6 to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Timberwolves rushed for a total of 318 yards and six touchdowns on the night. Gerald Morehead led the team in rushing with 127 yards, while Cole Lohrding found the end zone three times to lead South Central in the win.
Uniontown rolled past Chetopa 50-0 to remain undefeated on the season. The Eagles were led by their rushing attack as John Reed scored three touchdowns and Gavin Miller and Josh Wisely each added two score of their own. The Eagles held Chetopa to 45 rush yards on 19 attempts.
West Elk remained undefeated with a 46-0 shutout win over Lebo in Friday night. The Patriots were led by running back Armondo Gomez who rushed for 256 yards and five touchdowns on just 15 carries. Cade Miller added 44 yards on the ground and a score.
Class 8-Man II
Ashland outscored Ingalls 22-0 in the third quarter to turn around 26-22 halftime deficit into 56-42 upset of then 8M-II No. 4 Bulldogs. Kole Konrade rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns and added 127 receiving yards and another score to pace Ashland. Konrade’s 70-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter increased his team’s lead to two scores after Ingalls had pulled to within 50-42.
Pike Valley grabbed a 24-12 lead over then No. 5 Beloit St. John’s-Tipton and then held on for a 30-18 victory. Sophomore Lane Peters rushed for 98 yards and a score for the Panthers, while his classmate Davante Hammer passed for two touchdowns. Jacob Field and Dustin Branaugh caught touchdown passes for Pike Valley. St. John’s-Tipton was led by Davis Dubbert who passed for 215 yards and two scores.
Wheatland-Grinnell scored 22 points in each of the first two quarters in building a 44-22 lead on Cheylin. The Thunderhawks held off the Cougars 50-36 to pick up the win on Friday night. Wheatland-Grinnell quarterback Clay Schwarz passed for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Kaleb Holaday caught eight balls for 138 yards and two scores, including one touchdown pass from Chandler Ostmeyer. Holaday also rushed for 33 yards and a score.
Dighton scored 24 points in the first quarter and 28 in the second as part of a 52-6 win over Tribune-Greeley County. Tyler Lingg passed for 139 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hornets. Lingg connected with Dylan Foos four times for 113 yards and three touchdowns. Marcos Cruz added 79 yards rushing and a score and caught a short touchdown pass.
Axtell moved to 3-1 with a 34-22 win over St. Joseph (Mo.) Christian. The Eagles led 26-22 at halftime and added a touchdown in the third quarter for the final scoring of the game. Sophomore Kaleb Buessing completed 8 of 11 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 85 more yards and two scores. Burke Deters also added a pair of touchdown runs for Axtell.
