Action from Week 4 resulted in changes in at least six of the eight polls. Only the Class 3A and Eight-Man, Division I polls remain the same this week. As we enter Week 5, district play gets fully underway for both eight-man classifications and Class 2-1A. Here’s a look at the Kpreps Top 5 for Week 5.
The only change to the Class 6A poll this week is the return of the Derby Panthers to the poll after a 49-14 rout of Hutchinson. Derby moves back in to the No. 4 spot this week, just ahead of Wichita Northwest. Top-ranked Shawnee Mission East defeated previously unbeaten Shawnee Mission West 42-21, while No. 2 Blue Valley and No.3 Lawrence each won handily. Wichita Northwest remains in the No. 5 spot this week after a 73-12 win over Wichita Southeast on Thursday night.
In Class 5A, Mill Valley remains at No. 1 after cruising to a win over KC Southwest (Mo.). Things get significantly tougher for the Jaguars this week as they host Staley (Mo.), ranked No. 3 in Missouri Class 5. Bishop Carroll moves up one spot to No. 2 this week following a blowout win over Wichita Heights on Thursday night. St. Thomas Aquinas falls one spot to No. 3 this week after the Saints fell at Bishop Miege, the top-ranked team in Class 4A, Division I. The Saints had success rushing the ball against Miege, but turnovers and mistakes led directly to points for the Stags. Pittsburg and St. James Academy remain in their respective No. 4 and No. 5 spots this week. The Purple Dragons routed Chanute behind six total touchdowns by Sherrick Rogers, while St. James scored with 2:30 remaining to top Jefferson City (Mo.) Helias Catholic, 28-24 on Saturday.
The top three teams remain unchanged in Class 4A, Division I this week. Top-ranked Bishop Miege welcomed Dawson Downing back from injury and he rushed for 114 yards and three scores in the Stags’ 41-21 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Second-ranked Buhler received a huge first half from Dillon Engelland who rushed for 173 yards and four scores before halftime while battling illness. It proved to be enough as the Crusaders beat previously unbeaten Augusta, 47-21. Topeka Hayden remains in the No. 3 spot after beating Shawnee Heights, 56-25. Ulysses moves up to No. 4 this week despite struggling in a 27-16 win over Colby. The Tigers got 239 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Ian Rudzik in the win. Andover Central drops one spot to No.5 this week after the Jaguars fell 51-41 to Maize South. Andover Central played without starting quarterback Peyton Huslig, but backup Cole Taylor passed for 334 yards and six touchdowns. Darraja Parnell caught six passes for 271 yards and five touchdowns for the Jaguars.
In Class 4A, Division II, Columbus remains atop the poll after a 61-21 win over Girard. Senior running back Jace McDown rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns and caught two passes for 85 yards and another score. Andale remains at No. 2 this week after scoring 51 points in the first half of a 59-0 blowout of Towanda-Circle. Holton moves up to No. 3 this week with a 34-6 win at Hiawatha, while Holcomb drops one spot to No. 4 after a 15-7 loss to Class 3A No.2 Scott City. Finally, the Osawatomie Trojans return to the No. 5 spot as Riley England rushes for 467 yards and six touchdowns in a 47-19 win over Iola.
The Class 3A poll once again remains unchanged this week. Top-ranked Rossville rolled to a big win over Riley County, while No. 2 Scott City picked up a hard-fought 15-7 win at a 4A-II ranked team in Holcomb. Wichita Collegiate pulled away from Mulvane in the second half, while No. 4 Halstead and No. 5 Silver Lake posted shutout victories.
There is some slight movement in the Class 2-1A poll this week as Smith Center rises to No. 3 this week after an impressive 27-14 win over Norton. The Redmen got four Chase Ryan touchdowns in beating the Bluejays and flip places with fellow Mid-Continent League rival Phillipsburg. The Panthers drop one spot to No. 4 this week following a 20-12 win at Oakley. Smith Center defeated Oakley 35-0 in Week 2. Meade remains atop the 2-1A poll after a solid win over Cimarron. Sedgwick edged Bennington 16-9 to keep the No. 2 ranking, while Marion remains ranked fifth after defeating Ell-Saline.
There are no changes in the Eight-Man, Division I top five this week. The top four teams in the poll posted shutout wins by at least 50 points. Burlingame, ranked fifth, outscored Waverly 60-32 behind five total touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Dalton Sporing.
In Class 8-Man II, top-ranked Victoria posted a big win over Central Prairie League rival Ness City. Quarterback Joe Dortland accounted for five total touchdowns in the win for the Knights. Sharon Springs-Wallace County picked up a key district win over Hoxie, 48-18. Eric Gfeller passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two more to lead the Wildcats. Argonia-Attica, ranked third, made quick work of Pratt-Skyline in a 56-0 halftime win. Two new teams enter the poll this week as Otis-Bison and Pretty Prairie check in at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. The Cougars and Bulldogs replace Ingalls and Beloit St. John’s-Tipton which each lost last week. Ingalls fell 56-42 to Ashland, while St. John’s-Tipton fell 30-18 to Pike Valley.
