Kpreps.com takes you Around the Classes as we look at a handful of games in each classification from teams outside our top five rankings.
Class 6A:
Washburn Rural fought off a Topeka Seaman comeback attempt to remain undefeated after a 31-14 win. Rural scored the first 25 points of the game before Seaman cut the deficit to 25-14 with the entire fourth quarter still to play. The Junior Blues’ responded with a 19-play drive to open the fourth quarter that ate up nearly 10 minutes off the clock. Senior Matthew Williams scored from a yard out with just 2:16 to play to cap a 68-yard drive and clinch the win.
Junction City dominated Shawnee Heights in their 64-0 win on Friday night. Running back Raye Wilson carried the load for the Blue Jays as he finished with 186 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on the ground to go with a 40-yard touchdown catch.
Garden City used a 14-play 6-minute drive to eat up a majority of the fourth quarter clock to come away with a 42-28 win over Great Bend. The Buffaloes ran their quarterback isolation play 13 times during their game clinching 14-play drive. Jesse Nunez finished with 130 yards and two scores on 24 carries.
Brendan Watkins rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown as Olathe Northwest beat Leavenworth 30-6. Darius Henderson added a pair of touchdown runs as the Ravens improved to 2-1 with the win. Wade Jackson scored on a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Pioneers’ only points.
Class 5A:
Wichita Heights and Dodge City put on an entertaining show on Friday. The two teams combined to score 101 total points, but it was the Falcons that came out on top 53-48. Senior quarterback Garrett Haskins powered the Heights offense, rushing for 179 yards and two touchdowns.
Goddard-Eisenhower’s defense came up big multiple times in their 29-20 win over Maize South. The Tigers defense forced five Maverick turnovers inside the red-zone to preserve the win. The biggest play came from Tanner Orand when he jumped a curl route and returned the interception 87 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 16-0 lead in the first half.
Emporia stepped on the gas early and didn’t let up as the Spartans earned their first win of the season with a 72-14 win over Topeka West. Spartan quarterback Tanner Taylor ran for 184 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries and passed for 182 yards and two more scores.
Andover outlasted a lightning delay and Ark City, 27-13. The Trojans got 139 yards rushing and a touchdown from Robert Bundy. Quarterback Eli Renoux rushed and passed for a touchdown in the win. The Trojans recovered an errant Ark City punt snap in the end zone for another score.
Valley Center pulled away from Newton in the second half for a 35-14 win. The Hornets were deadlocked at 7-7 with the Railers before puting up 21 points in the third quarter to break the game open. Valley Center improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
Class 4A-I:
Augusta went on the road and stole a win from McPherson on Friday night with a late touchdown run for a 19-13 win. Augusta trailed 13-6 at the half but quarterback Zach Barclay helped lift the Orioles past the Bullpups with a nine-yard touchdown run with 1:01 left in the game which provided the winning points.
Abilene improved to 3-0 on the season with a 27-6 win over Concordia. Abilene quarterback Harley Hazlett carried the Cowboys in the win with three rushing touchdowns.
Hays earned their first win of the season with a 29-0 shutout over Liberal on Friday night. Kohlon Meyers threw and ran for a touchdown in the win and running back Hunter Brown broke away for two rushing touchdowns of his own.
Paola came away with a 28-21 win over Eudora on Friday night. The Panthers scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth to escape with the win. Dalton Rankin had three rushing touchdowns including a 63-yard run and an 81-yard run that was the eventual game winning score.
Class 4A-II:
Royal Valley was looking for a statement win on Friday night and got it with a 40-14 pounding over Santa Fe Trail. The Panthers piled up 21 first downs and ran for 400 yards as a team, highlighted by 194 yards from fullback Derrick Barger and 99 from quarterback Zack Lux.
The Wamego Red Raiders earned their first win of the season on Friday night with a 28-0 shutout victory over Marysville. Quarterback Dillon Blain threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in the win. Ethan Thomas caught six passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns.
Girard routed Baxter Springs 42-6 to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Trojans returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in the win and quarterback Eric Wilson threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. The game ended in the third quarter due to severe weather.
Mitchell Bond scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds remaining to lift Perry-Lecompton over Baldwin, 26-20. Bond rushed for 151 yards and two scores and passed for 175 yards and another touchdown. Joel Katzer rushed for more than 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Baldwin.
Although Frontenac only got to play a half of football, the Raiders still put up 40 points in a 40-0 shutout win over Southeast-Cherokee in a weather shortened football game. Quarterback Brandon Mlekus threw for 188 yards and three scores for the Raiders.
Class 3A:
Garden Plain used a balanced rushing attack and a suffocating defense to top rival Conway Springs, 27-12. Six different ball carriers combined for 192 rushing yards for the Owls including quarterback Alec Becker who rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Garden Plain’s defense held Conway Springs to just 88 rushing yards on the night. The victory was the Owls’ first over the Cardinals since 2012.
Ryan Jackson hit Colson Reames on a 7-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to lift Beloit to a 20-17 win over Sacred Heart. The Knights took a 17-14 lead into halftime after a Jacob Faerber touchdown catch. The sophomore led Sacred Heart with 194 yards rushing. Reames also rushed for a touchdown for Beloit.
Oskaloosa moved to 3-0 with a 36-28 win at Maranatha Academy on Saturday. The Bears scored 22 points in the first quarter and led 30-20 at halftime. Oskaloosa increased its lead to 16 in the third quarter before the Eagles pulled to within eight with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Hutchinson Trinity’s goal line stand in the final seconds preserved the Celtics’ first win of the season, 19-14 over the Inman Teutons. Trinity running back Greg Bird rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown while also returning the opening kickoff for another score.
Class 2-1A:
Lyndon’s offense was held in check for most of the game but scored when they needed to as the Tigers stunned Northern Heights 14-7 on Friday night. Down 7-0 in the fourth quarter, Tigers Dexter Swinehart took the handoff for a 10-yard touchdown and converted the two-point conversion on a tipped ball to go up 8-7. A short pick-six later ended any hope for Northern Heights.
Bennington cruised to a 46-6 victory over Moundridge for their third win of the season. Bulldog senior quarterback Jacob Stanley threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns and classmate Kyler Mick added two more scores to lead the offensive onslaught for Bennington.
Defending champion Olpe earned their first win of the season with a 40-6 victory over Eureka. The Eagles had a balanced offensive attack with quarterback Ryker Schmidt completing 13 of 24 passes through 188 yards, and Andrew Burenheide rushing for 127 yards.
Troy earned a 27-0 shutout win over Valley Heights on Friday night. Taylor Scherer scored on a 10-yard run and caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Reid Greaser to lead the way for Troy.
Class 8-Man I
Atwood Rawlins-County blanked Northern Valley to earn its first shutout win of the season 50-0. The Buffaloes rushed for 363 yards and six touchdown including 111 yards and three scores from Cole Sramek.
Udall outscored Oxford 56-26 on Friday night for the Eagles second win of the season. Senior quarterback Nolan Williams threw for 305 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 116 more yards. Brayden Wilkey, Luke Wiley, and Ryon Filtingberger combined for 305 receiving yards and the six touchdowns. The Eagles and Wildcats will meet for a second time in district play in Week 9.
Sedan and Marmaton Valley traded touchdowns throughout the entire game, but the Blue Devils got the only score of the fourth quarter to win 44-36 win. Huntur Cummings caught four passes for 116 yards and two scores and rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns to lead Sedan. Austin Deer led the Wildcats with 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Lincoln remained undefeated with a 64-38 win over Clifton-Clyde on Friday night. Leopards quarterback Zac Walter rushed for four touchdowns to lead the offensive attack for Lincoln.
South Central rebounded from their loss to top-ranked Spearville with a solid 48-14 win over Satanta. The Timberwolves led 28-8 at halftime and iced the game with 14 points in the fourth quarter. Gerald Morehead passed for 128 yards and two scores, but did his damage on the ground with 223 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Class 8-Man II
Hoxie posted their second consecutive 46-0 victory on Friday night only this time their opponent was the Jack Rabbits from Tribune Greeley-County. Indian sophomore running back Lathan Schwarz rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns in the win.
Stafford completed their comeback over Hutchinson Central Christian with a thrilling 48-46 overtime win. The Trojans rattled off three straight touchdowns in the second half to overcome a 26-point deficit to capture a thrilling win in overtime on the road against the Cougars. Logan Shocklee rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for Stafford.
The Deerfield Spartans picked up their first win of the season with a 66-36 victory over Wichita Life Prep Academy. The Spartans led 41-25 at halftime, and pulled away by outscoring the Fire 19-6 in the fourth quarter. Malich Barry rushed for 126 yards and four touchdowns for Life Prep.
South Haven held off Cedar Vale-Dexter 60-52 behind senior quarterback Trent Short. Short passed for 238 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 44 yards and another scores. The Cardinals and Spartans were tied at 30 at halftime before South Haven built a 52-38 lead after three quarters.
